[Monotype/Water] Empoleon

[OVERVIEW]

**Water**:

Empoleon has access to a great defensive typing, taking neutral damage from Grass-type moves and notably resisting Fairy-, Psychic-, Bug-, Flying-, and Dragon-type moves among its plethora of resistances. Its immunity to Poison-type moves is also very helpful. Empoleon's excellent natural bulk complements its typing greatly. It also has access to amazing utility moves such as Defog, Stealth Rock, and Roar. These qualities make Empoleon a very reliable entry hazard remover, that is also able to set up its own Stealth Rock. However, not having access to any sort of reliable recovery hinders it greatly. Its low Speed allows it to get outsped by common Taunt users such as Mew and Cobalion. Additionally, being weak to common offensive types like Ground, Electric, and Fighting reduces its viability.

Moves
========

Stealth Rock is one of Empoleon's main selling points, dealing chip damage to the foes. It keeps certain Pokemon like Mega Charizard Y, Mega Pinsir, and Zapdos in check, which are huge threats to Water-type teams. Defog provides reliable hazard removal. It does, however, get rid of your own hazards as well and thus should be used carefully. Scald is a decently strong STAB move with a 30% chance to burn, preventing most physical attackers from switching in freely. Roar allows Empoleon to phaze setup sweepers that it cannot beat, such as Calm Mind Mega Latias and Clefable. It also shuffles the opposing team, forcing them into the Stealth Rock that Empoleon set.

Set Details
========

Maximum Special Defense and HP investment along with a Calm nature allows Empoleon to take special hits as well as it can. The other 4 EVs are dumped into Special Attack to make use of its decently strong STAB move in Scald. Torrent is Empoleon's only useful ability, boosting Scald's power when Empoleon is below 33%. Leftovers enables Empoleon to regain HP throughout the battle.

Usage Tips
========

It is best to use Stealth Rock early-game to deal chip damage to the foes. Empoleon can be switched in on most special attacks barring those that are super effective against it in order Stealth Rock or get rid of entry hazards. However, it should not be switched in on strong physical attacks, as it does not appreciate getting worn down too quickly due to having no reliable recovery. Scald can usually be spammed freely, as it limits most physical Pokemon from switching in safely. Empoleon's plethora of resistances can be used to switch in and get rid of hazards or get Stealth Rock up. While Empoleon is a great special wall, it hates sponging damage. Due to its lack of recovery, it can find itself pressured easily, and once it has switched into attacks a few times, it is incapable of setting up Stealth Rock or Defogging away entry hazards. Empoleon should be careful of switching into some setup sweepers; for example, it has to switch into Mega Latias's Calm Mind if it wants any hope of phazing it, as +1 Mega Latias can 2HKO it with Thunderbolt easily. It is unwise to let Leftovers get Knocked Off, since Empoleon gets worn down very quickly without it. Empoleon should be kept healthy to wall special attackers and spread burns.

Team Options
========

Empoleon manages to fit on both balanced and stall team archetypes thanks to its unique typing and great utility, and it doesn't need very much support. Volcanion and Gyarados are two Pokemon that greatly appreciate Stealth Rock removal through Defog. Gyarados also takes Ground- and Fighting-type moves that threaten Empoleon while the latter takes Rock-type moves for Gyarados. Gyarados's access to Intimidate further boosts Empoleon's ability to take hits. Rotom-W is a perfect partner for Empoleon due to its Ground-type immunity, access to Will-O-Wisp, and physical bulk. Will-O-Wisp hinders physical attackers greatly, something Empoleon appreciates. Rotom-W also takes neutral damage from Electric-type attacks, which greatly benefits Empoleon. Mega Sharpedo, Azumarill, Manaphy, Mega Gyarados, and Keldeo are some amazing wallbreakers that appreciate Empoleon's ability to get up Stealth Rock. Azumarill's Fairy typing lets it take Fighting-type attacks aimed at Empoleon. Keldeo, Mega Sharpedo, and Mega Gyarados appreciate Empoleon's ability to switch into Fairy-, Fighting-, Bug-, and Psychic-type moves. Electric-immune Pokemon, such as Lanturn and Swampert, are helpful to Empoleon. Lanturn provides Heal Bell, Thunder Wave, and a slow Volt Switch, making it a great partner, but it does compound the weakness to Ground-types. Swampert, on the other hand, has good physical bulk and a great typing that synergizes well with Empoleon, but it has completely redundant utility in Scald, Roar, and Stealth Rock. Alomomola is a fantastic teammate because of its access to Wish and its ability to pivot into almost all physical attackers that threaten Empoleon. It greatly appreciates Empoleon's ability to remove entry hazards, allowing it to optimally utilize its Regenerator ability. Quagsire proves itself to be an invaluable partner, especially on stall team archetypes. Its ability Unaware lets it take on setup sweepers with ease. Slowbro helps Empoleon greatly by being able to take on most physical attacks, especially Fighting-type moves.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

**Water**:

Shuca Berry and Chople Berry are semi-decent items for Empoleon to help take Ground- and Fighting-type moves, respectively. However, these are suboptimal options, as Empoleon prefers Leftovers due to it having no other method of reliable recovery. Empoleon is also incapable of beating most Ground- and Fighting-types anyway, even offensive ones that are weak to Scald like Landorus and Excadrill. Toxic is an option over Roar to help beat Mega Latias if it does not carry a utility move, since Substitute, Reflect Type, and Refresh all stop Toxic from working. Furthermore, Toxic cripples Zapdos and Mew, which are hard to take down otherwise. Missing out on Roar, however, prevents Empoleon from beating most setup sweepers, notably Calm Mind Clefable, which it is supposed to beat, and thus it is not recommended. Ice Beam can also be used to make use of Empoleon's good Special Attack and hit Dragon-, Grass-, and Flying-type Pokemon for super effective damage, notably Hydreigon, Latios, and Dragonite. Again, though, missing out on Roar isn't a great idea, as Empoleon otherwise loses to most setup sweepers. Finally, Knock Off is very helpful, as most Pokemon hate losing their items.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Water**:

**Fighting-types**: Fighting-types, especially those that don't fear Scald, such as Keldeo, Guts Heracross, and Guts Conkeldurr, can switch in on Empoleon and threaten it.

**Electric-types**: Electric-types, such as Mega Ampharos, Thundurus, and Magnezone, are able to do massive damage with their STAB moves.

**Ground-types**: Although incapable of switching in freely, most Ground-types are able to greatly threaten Empoleon with their STAB moves, notably Excadrill, Garchomp, and Mamoswine. Furthermore, Seismitoad and Gastrodon are able to switch in freely, as they are immune to Scald.

**Faster Taunt users**: Taunt users such as Mew, Cobalion, and Gliscor can shut down Empoleon very badly, leaving it unable to set up or get rid of entry hazards.

**Passive Damage**: Lack of recovery besides Leftovers allows Empoleon to get worn down very quickly, especially if it's switched in repeatedly when it is burned or multiple layers of Spikes are up.

**Defensive Pokemon**: Most defensive Pokemon with reliable recovery, such as Chansey and Cradily, are capable of beating Empoleon, as they can wear it down while restoring any lost health.

Overview:
- The Flying resistance isn't particularly important when the only offensive threat Empoleon can actually "handle" is Togekiss. But the other utility Pokemon (Tentacruel, Lanturn, Rotom-W) don't have trouble with it either and Empoleon's idea of fighting back is its weak Scald. The other common users of Flying-type attacks (Tornadus-T and Mega Pinsir) carry Fighting coverage, which beats Empoleon anyway. And Togekiss often has Aura Sphere too.
- Empoleon has poor offensive presence, which should be mentioned. (take out the decent offensive presence thing)

Moves:
- Defog is actually pretty nice for Water teams. Both Volcanion and Gyarados hate taking the extra damage, for example. The team does a lot of switching in general too. I'd just say that Empoleon provides reliable entry hazard removal and leave it at that.
- I'd add that Roar also shuffles the opposing team, forcing them into the Stealth Rock that it sets.

Set Details:
- Torrent activates at 33% HP, not 25%.

Usage Tips:
- While Empoleon is a very good special wall, it should be noted that it really hates actually sponging damage. Due to its lack of recovery, it can find itself pressured easily, once it has switched into attacks a few times, and incapable of setting up Stealth Rock or Defogging entry hazards.
- Empoleon needs to be switched into Mega Latias's Calm Mind if it wants any hope of phazing it out, as at +1, Mega Latias can 2HKO Empoleon with Thunderbolt easily.

Team Options:
- I'd start off saying that Empoleon fits very well onto both stall and balanced team archetypes, thanks to its unique typing and great utility, and doesn't need very much support.
- Rotom-W also takes neutral damage from Electric-type attacks, which makes it even more helpful.
- Speaking of Electric-type attacks, mention both Lanturn and Swampert. Lanturn has access to Heal Bell, a slow Volt Switch, Thunder Wave, and other utility, making it a good fit. It is, however, going to compound the weakness to Ground-types. Swampert on the other hand has great typing synergy with Empoleon and has good physical bulk, but it has completely redundant utility in Scald, Roar, and Stealth Rock. You should explain this nuanced decision.
- Alomomola is a fantastic teammate because of its access to Wish and ability to pivot into almost all physical attackers that threaten Empoleon. It greatly appreciates Empoleon's ability to remove entry hazards, allowing it to optimally utilize its Regenerator ability.

Other Options:
- It's also important to note that Empoleon is pretty often incapable of beating even Ground-types, anyway. Being able to survive one Earthquake but not be able to take out even offensive threats such as Excadrill and Landorus in return makes it less useful. This is even more true for Chople Berry than for Shuca Berry.
- About Toxic, it's not really true that most setup sweepers can't be beaten by it. Anyway, it should be noted that Toxic can't beat any Calm Mind Mega Latias that carries a utility move, since Substitute, Refresh, and Reflect Type all stop Toxic from working. It also loses to Calm Mind Clefable as well, another huge threat that Empoleon is supposed to beat.

Checks and Counters:
- Give examples of Taunt users. Mew, Cobalion, and Gliscor all handle Empoleon well.
- Defensive Pokemon almost all defeat Empoleon. With recovery of their own, they can use whatever utility they want and slowly wear down Empoleon, which only has Leftovers for healing. Good examples include Chansey and Cradily. They do generally hate taking Scald burns, though.

Overview
  • Mention it having access to Scald as well under Utility moves as it can Burn
  • Add Electric to what Empoleon is weak to
  • Gives some examples of Taunt users that Empoleon is outspeed by
  • Add Flying and Bug moves as good resistances and also mention how it is immune to Poison
Moves
  • Mention how Defog gets rid of your won hazards and should be used carefully
  • Mention how Stealth Rock keeps certain Pokemon in check for water teams such as Mega Pinsir Zapdos and Mega Charizard-Y
Set details
  • Leftovers permits Empoleon to regain HP throughout the battle (Omit portion after this because I feel like it's overdone)
Usage Tips
  • Mention how Empoleon should not be Knocked of since an Empoleon without Leftovers isn't walling that much
  • Mention how Empoleon should be kept healthy to wall special attackers and spread burns
Team Options
  • Add Slowbro as it takes on Fighting types that Empoleon hates
  • Add Mega Gyarados as it likes Stealth Rocks to pick up certain kills
  • Add Quagsire as it is very important on Stall Water and it helps against setup sweepers
Checks and Counters
  • **Fighting-types**: Fighting-types, especially those that don't fear Scald, such as Keldeo, Guts Heracross, and Guts Conkeldurr can switch in and threaten Empoleon.
  • Under ground types add Pokemon such as Seismitoad and Gastrodon as they hard wall Empoleon
  • Mention burns under passive Damage
  • Add Electric types section as they all do massive damage to Empoleon,
Good Job QC 2/3

Overview:
(Talked to iVid on this) Scald isn't actually a utility move. You should take that out and put it in a separate line. Mention about it having a 30% chance to burn the foe.

Team Options:
Mention how Keldeo, Mega Gyarados, and Mega Sharpedo appreciate Empoleon's ability to switch in to Fairy-type moves. Keldeo in particular, also appreciates its resistance to Psychic- and Flying-type moves. While Mega Gyarados and Mega Sharpedo like its ability to take Bug-type moves.

Other Options:
Definitely add Knock Off. Most Pokemon hate losing their item. Choice Scarf Togekiss specifically, can be annoying for Water-type teams to deal with. Knocking Off its item will allow Empoleon or its teammates KO it easier.

Everything else seems fine. Nicely done! QC 3/3

It gets Scald as a Water-type STAB move with a very helpful 30% chance to burn the foe. Its access to Roar permits it to stop potential set up sweepers. (This seems too specific to be putting in the overview because these details are already included in the move details section) Therefore, it finds a spot on any team looking for hazard control, being one of the best Stealth Rock users on Water-type teams. Yet However, not having access to any sort of reliable recovery hinders it greatly. It has low Speed, allowing it to get outsped by common Taunt users,(RC) such as Mew and Cobalion. Toxic is an option over Roar to help beat Mega Latias,(AC) if it does not carry a utility move, since Substitute, Reflect Type, and Refresh all stop Toxic from working.(end sentence),(RC) Furthermore, Toxic cripples Zapdos,(RC) and Mew,(AC) which are hard to take down otherwise. Missing out on Roar, however, prevents does not let Empoleon from beating most setup sweepers, notably Calm Mind Clefable, which it is supposed to beat, and thus is not recommended. Ice Beam can also be used to make use of Empoleon's good Special Attack and hit Dragon-, Grass-, and Flying-type Pokemon for Super Effective super effective damage, notably Hydreigon, Latios, and Dragonite. Again, though, missing out on Roar isn't a great idea, (AC) as it Empoleon otherwise loses to most setup sweepers. Finally, Knock Off is very helpful,(AC) as most Pokemon hate losing their items,(RC) such as Choice Scarf Togekiss, which allows teammates to pick up the KO. (I would reword this to describe the uses of Knock Off outside of just one Pokemon)

Checks and Counters
===================
**Water:** (colon outside)

**Fighting-types**: Fighting-types, especially those that don't fear Scald, such as Keldeo, Guts Heracross, and Guts Conkeldurr, (AC) can switch in and threaten Empoleon. on Empoleon and threaten it. (sounds better)

**Electric-types**: Electric-types such as Mega Ampharos, Thundurus, and Magnezone are able to do massive damage with their STAB moves. (I would add something here, as this is obvious) Threats to Empoleon include Mega Ampharos, Thundurus, and Magnezone.

**Ground-types**: Although incapable of switching in freely, most Ground-types are able to greatly threaten Empoleon greatly with their STAB moves, notably Excadrill, Garchomp, and Mamoswine. Furthermore,(AC) Seismitoad and Gastrodon are able to switch in freely, as they are being immune to Scald.,(RC) and threaten Empoleon.

**Faster Taunt users**: Taunt users such as Mew, Cobalion, and Gliscor can shut down Empoleon very badly, leaving it unable to set up or get rid of hazards. Notable Taunt users are Mew, Cobalion, and Gliscor.

**Passive Damage**: Lack of recovery besides Leftovers allows Empoleon to get worn down very quickly, especially if it's switched in repeatedly when it is burnt or multiple layers of Spikes are up.(end sentence) or is burnt. (sounds clearer)

**Defensive Pokemon**: Most Defensive defensive Pokemon with reliable recovery,(AC) such as Chansey and Cradily,(AC) are capable of beating Empoleon, (AC) as they can wear it down,(RC) while restoring any lost health. Good examples are Chansey and Cradily. (You had a habit of making extra sentences to list Pokemon when you didn't need to.)

i like what i'm seeing mostly, you definitely have a solid foundation + good judgment. notes:
main "Smogon-specific" things to look out for:

setup sweepers (one word)
if as or since is being used to mean because, it has to have a comma before it. kind of silly but it's to reduce ambiguity (both can be temporal instead of causal)

other things...

Its Empoleon's large plethora amount of resistances can be used
large plethora does sound pretty bad, but amount can only be used for non-countable things. amount of food, amount of air, amount of clothing, amount of stuff. if you're talking about countable things (aka you can say "# x") you use number. number of forks, number of socks, number of cameras, number of things. so since resistances is countable, it has to be number of resistances
Rotom-W is a perfect partner for Empoleon due to its Ground-type immunity, access to Will-O-Wisp, and its physical bulk.
this is... well, it works if you're okay with "Rotom-W is a perfect partner for Empoleon due to access to Will-O-Wisp". otherwise, it's not parallel. i wrote a bit on that here
Azumarill's Fairy-typing lets it take
no dash in this case. I think this is covered in the top half of the Grammar Standards
Electric-type immunities, such as Lanturn and Swampert
immunities doesn't refer to Pokemon (neither does resistances or "resists"). "Mismagius has a lot of immunities", good. "Mismagius is a Normal immunity", not good. it's gotta be "Pokemon that resist / are immune to / are resistant to [type]" or "[type]-resistant / [type]-immune Pokemon". ex: Pokemon that resist Dark, Ground-immune foes, Flying-resistant Pokemon
Its ability Unaware ability lets it
it's okay the other way around
However,(AC) Missing missing out on Roar,(RC) however,(RC) does not
same here

[OVERVIEW]

It also gains has access to amazing utility moves such as Defog, Stealth Rock, and Roar. These qualities make Empoleon a very reliable entry hazard remover, that is also able to set up its own Stealth Rock. However, not having access to any sort of reliable recovery hinders it greatly. It has Its low Speed (RC) allowing allows it to get outsped by common Taunt users such as Mew and Cobalion. Additionally, being weak to common offensive types like Ground, Electric, and Fighting reduces its viability.

Moves
========

Stealth Rock is one of Empoleon's main selling points, dealing chip damage to the foes. It keeps certain Pokemon like Mega Charizard Y, Mega Pinsir, and Zapdos in check, which are huge threats to Water-type teams. Defog provides reliable entry hazard removal. It does, however, get rid of your own hazards as wel and thus should be used carefully. Scald is a decently strong STAB move with a 30% chance to burn, preventing most physical attackers from switching in freely. Roar allows it Empoleon to phaze setup sweepers that it cannot beat, such as Calm Mind Mega Latias and Clefable. It also shuffles the opposing team, forcing them into the Stealth Rock that Empoleon set.

Set Details
========

Maximum Special Defense and HP investment along with a Calm nature allow allows Empoleon to take special hits as best well as it can. The other 4 EVs are dumped into Special Attack to make use of its decently strong STAB move in Scald. Torrent is an obvious choice, being its Empoleon's only useful ability, (comma) Scald's boost in boosting Scald's power when Empoleon is below 33% is a lot more helpful compared to the utterly useless ability in Defiant. Leftovers enables Empoleon to regain HP throughout the battle.

Usage Tips
========

Scald can usually be spammed freely, (AC) as it limits most physical Pokemon from switching in safely.

========

Lanturn provides Heal Bell, Thunder Wave, and a slow Volt Switch, making it a great partner. It does, however, but it does compound the weakness to Ground-types.

=============

**Water**:
Shuca Berry and Chople Berry are semi-decent options items for Empoleon to help take Ground- and Fighting-type moves, respectively.
