Doubles Necrozma

[OVERVIEW]
Necrozma is a decent Trick Room setter and setup sweeper in Doubles OU due to its unique ability and movepool. Prism Armor, Necrozma's signature ability, prevents some Ghost- and Dark-type attackers from OHKOing it. This gives it a distinct niche, since strong Ghost- and Dark-types are often used as a team's primary answer to Trick Room setters. Furthermore, Necrozma is capable of becoming a major offensive threat after a couple Calm Mind boosts. However, Necrozma suffers from four-moveslot syndrome, wanting to run a STAB move, a coverage move, Trick Room, and various other status moves all at the same time. Perhaps its greatest flaw is that it struggles versus Steel-types and is completely walled by Dark-types, since it typically only runs Stored Power as its attacking move. This makes it a liability in many matchups. On top of all this, it faces intense competition from other Trick Room setters, lacking the offensive presence of setters such as Hoopa-U or the utility of setters such as Bronzong.

Due to all of its flaws, Necrozma should really only be used on full or semi-Trick Room teams that need a reliable check to special attackers. In the vast majority of cases, Necrozma's role as a Trick Room setter can be better fulfilled by either Bronzong or Hoopa-U.

[SET]
name: Trick Room Setter
move 1: Stored Power
move 2: Calm Mind
move 3: Moonlight
move 4: Trick Room
item: Leftovers
ability: Prism Armor
nature: Relaxed
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
Stored Power is Necrozma's sole attacking move, allowing it to hit harder with every stat boost from Calm Mind. Calm Mind lets Necrozma hit harder and set up freely versus opposing special attackers. Moonlight gives Necrozma extended longevity, which is especially useful after it has acquired some Special Defense boosts. Trick Room lets Necrozma and its team go first against faster foes.

Set Details
========
Leftovers gives Necrozma a means of passive recovery, which is quite useful after it has acquired some Calm Mind boosts. An EV spread of 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD with a Relaxed nature maximizes Defense, since Calm Mind lets it boost its other stats. 0 Speed IVs should be used so Necrozma is as fast as possible under Trick Room.

Usage Tips
========
Necrozma works well as a lead alongside a Fake Out user or redirector in order to get up Trick Room straight away. You should try to keep Necrozma healthy throughout the match so it can be used as a late-game wincon. The combination of Calm Mind and Moonlight allows it to clean up once opposing Dark- and Steel-types have been removed. Once Necrozma has set Trick Room, it is often best to switch it out for a strong Trick Room attacker so it can make the most of the limited Trick Room turns. Generally, avoid setting up if your opponent still has Dark- or Steel-types in the back, since they can freely switch in and then set up or threaten Necrozma out.

Team Options
========
Strong, slow attackers such as Araquanid and Eruption Heatran are great partners, since they appreciate Necrozma's Trick Room support. Necrozma needs allies that can KO Steel-types, so strong Fire- and Ground-types are appreciated. Mega Charizard Y is a particularly good partner because it allows Necrozma to heal additional HP while Drought is up. Dark-types make for good partners because they can switch in on opposing Dark- and Ghost-type attacks, while Necrozma can KO Fighting-types in return. Scrafty is a good option, since it can aid Necrozma in setting Trick Room with its Fake Out, while Hoopa-U can also set Trick Room and reliably checks Steel-types. Redirection support from the likes of Amoonguss is appreciated, since it allows Necrozma to set Trick Room without having to be worried about getting KOed or Taunted.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
Psyshock can be run over Stored Power if you want more immediate offensive power, since Stored Power is rather weak without multiple prior stat boosts. For example, Psyshock allows Necrozma to 2HKO Mega Gengar and Terrakion straight away, while Stored Power does not. Hidden Power Ground can be run to hit Steel-types such as Heatran and Aegislash, and it also hits Tyranitar. Necrozma can utilize Iron Defense well, which boosts its Defense and the strength of Stored Power. Similarly, Grassy Seed can be used over Leftovers if you pair Necrozma with Tapu Bulu. Necrozma can use Safety Goggles to effectively check Amoonguss, which otherwise shuts down many Trick Room teams.

Checks and Counters
===================
**Dark-types**: Dark-type Pokemon such as Hoopa-U and Tyranitar are immensely threatening because they entirely wall Necrozma's typical set. They can then proceed to 2HKO it with their strong Dark-type attacks.

**Steel-types**: Steel-type Pokemon such as Heatran, Aegislash, and Celesteela can set up Substitutes versus Necrozma and easily take Calm Mind-boosted Stored Power. They can then proceed to whittle it down with Heat Wave, Shadow Ball, or Leech Seed, respectively.

**Taunt and Substitute**: Taunt users such as Mega Gengar and Tapu Koko completely shut down Necrozma, preventing it from setting Trick Room or using Calm Mind. At that point, it will most likely be forced to switch out. Substitute attackers such as Heatran and Aegislash are also super threatening because they can soak up Psychic-type attacks, set Substitute, and continue to fire off attacks behind the safety of a Substitute.

**Opposing Weather**: Rain, sand, and hail prevent Necrozma from healing as much HP with Moonlight, making it much harder to stay healthy. Tyranitar is particularly threatening because its Dark typing also lets it wall Necrozma.
[OVERVIEW]
  • Necrozma is one of the tier's best Trick Room setters and a fearsome set up sweepers due to its unique ability and movepool.
  • Prism Armor, Necrozma's signature ability, allows it to not be OHKOed by the Ghost- and Dark-type attackers that are commonly used to check Trick Room setters.
  • After some Calm Mind boosts, Necrozma becomes a major offensive threat, capable of dishing out big damage while recovering HP with Moonlight.
  • However, it suffers from four moveslot syndrome, wanting to run a STAB, coverage move, a means of speed control, and multiple other status moves, all on the same set.
  • It is completely walled by Steel- and Dark-types since it typically only runs a STAB for its attacking moves.
  • It is incredibly weak before any Calm Mind boosts.
  • It also faces competition from other Trick Room setters such as Hoopa-U and Jirachi.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
  • Stored Power is Necrozma's preferred STAB move, since its base power increases with every stat boost provided by Calm Mind.
  • Calm Mind allows Necrozma to hit harder and also turn opposing Special attackers into set up bait.
  • Moonlight is used to give Necrozma extended longevity.
  • Trick Room lets Necrozma and its team go first against faster opponents.
Set Details
========
  • Leftovers gives Necrozma a means of passive recovery which is quite useful after it has acquired a few Special Defense boosts from Calm Mind.
  • A simple EV spread of 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD and a Relaxed Nature maximizes physical defense since Calm Mind lets you boost its other stats.
  • You should use 0 Speed IVs so Necrozma is as fast as possible under Trick Room.
Usage Tips
========
  • Necrozma works well as a lead alongside a Fake Out user or redirector in order to get up Trick Room straight away.
  • Calm Mind and Moonlight make Necrozma incredibly tanky, allowing it to single handedly beat opposing teams if Steel- and Dark-types have been removed.
  • You should try to keep Necrozma healthy so you can use it as a win condition in the late game.
  • Once Necrozma has set Trick Room, it is sometimes best to switch it out for a strong Trick Room attacker so you can make the most of your limited Trick Room turns.
Team Options

  • Strong, slow attackers such as Araquanid and Eruption Heatran are great partners because they appreciate Necrozma's Trick Room support.

  • Fake Out users like Kangaskhan and Scrafty are good partners since they facilitate setting up Trick Room.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============
  • Safety Goggles can be run to let Necrozma effectively check Amoonguss, a common answer to Trick Room teams.
  • Grassy Seed provides an extra boost for Stored Power boosting and pairs well with Bulu anyway for the added recovery.
  • Psyshock can be run over Stored Power if you want more immediate power, since Stored Power is rather weak without multiple prior stat boosts.
    • For example, Psyshock allows you to 2HKO Keldeo and Terrakion straight away, while Stored Power does not.
  • Hidden Power Ground can be run to hit Steel-types such as Heatran and Aegislash, and it also hits Alolan Muk.
  • Thunder Wave can be used instead of Trick Room if Necrozma fits on your team, but you don't want to put your fast attackers at a disadvantage.
  • Iron Defense (will elaborate)
Checks and Counters
===================

**Dark-type Pokemon**: Dark-types such as Hoopa-U and Alolan Muk are immensely threatening because they hit Necrozma for super effective damage and don't take any damage from Psychic-type attacks.

**Steel-type Pokemon**: Steel-type Pokemon can easily take Calm Mind boosted Psyshock, and then set up a Subsitute in the case of Heatran or Aegislash, or continue to recover HP with Leech Seed in the case of Celesteela.

**Taunt and Substitute**: Taunt users such as Mega Gengar and Tapu Koko completely shut down Necrozma, preventing it from setting Trick Room or using Calm Mind. At that point it will mostly likely be forced to switch out.

Tyranitar is particularly threatening, because its Dark typing also lets it wall Necrozma.

Since Evo Boost is now banned there is really no reason to mention it. It requires you to use Calm Mind at least 3 times or more, at which point you could probably have 2HKOd with Psyshock or something. Stored Power also hits like a limp dick w/o any boosts.

Stored Power definitely deserve its own set - it's the most popular set rn. It doesn't need help racking up boosts, as with Iron Defense + Calm Mind + Prism Armor, it can set up in the face of strong super-effective hits. all it takes is 1 AA and 2 CMs to have Stored Power with the same bp as Psycho Boost powered by +2 SpA, which is all it really needs to start sweeping.

  • [Overview] Needs a Calm Mind boost to do even somewhat passable damage
  • [Overview] When discussing 4MSS, also mention Protect and Iron Defense
  • [Set] De-slash Safety Goggles, sleep is super uncommon and if you're worried about it I'd rather run Fini/Koko as a partner
  • [Moves] Moonlight on all non-Sun teams, Morning Sun on Zard Y builds for the aesthetic
  • [Set Details] Leave Safety Goggles here, it is still a decent option, just not worthy of the slash
  • [Team Options] Instead of just saying Fire- and Ground-types, change to strong TR attackers to take advantage of Trick Room, and add a mention for Fairy-types like Sylv for Dark-types
  • [Other Options] HP Ground also hits Alolan Muk
  • [Other Options] Grassy Seed, provides an extra boost for Stored Power boosting and pairs well with Bulu anyway for the added recovery
  • [Checks and Counters] Taunt users should include Mega Gengar - even though it's hit super effectively by Stored Power, an unboosted Stored Power won't even 2HKO and Shadow Ball does a ton to +0 Necrozma
  • [Checks and Counters] **Opposing Weather** tag, anything other than sun makes it difficult for Necrozma to stay healthy, and hail/sand also deal chip damage. Ttar is a fantastic check and deserves to be here.
I think that's it for now, QC 1/2 and write this up!
