[DONE] KANTO CLASSIC: Post your results!

It depends on your team composition as well. I'm running Ice Beam Starmie and Clefable on my team as well as my own Dragonite, so I felt that using T-bolt over Ice Beam on Nidoking to help with my Slowbro weakness was an ok idea.

Definitely. Since Nidoking is very susceptible to Surf especially. So having T-bolt on him might help.

I tried coming up with some stuff last night... might mess with it a bit more.

Team ideas

Chansey -- Ice Beam, Soft Boiled, Thunder Wave, Thunderbolt
Muk/Gengar? Sludge, Body Slam, Explosion; Explosion, Thunderbolt, Mega Drain
Nidoking? Earthquake, Blizzard/Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, Body Slam
Porygon? Thunder Wave, Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, Double-Edge; Hyper Beam, Psychic, Recover
Alakazam? Psychic, Recover, Thunder Wave, Reflect
Arbok? Earthquake, Wrap, Glare, Hyper Beam/Crunch

Might switch out some moves though... mainly just checking out the Pokemon right now.

You're kidding w/ those team ideas right? Chansey can't attack, Sludge<<<<Sludge Bomb, Nidoking needs a poison STAB, Porygon and Arbok suck, and Alakazam is too frail to be using T-Wave(screens are also questionable.)

Actually not. I'm not into competitive to be honest. Figured Alakazam wouldn't be worth much. What would you go with?

So I guess I'll probably go with Snorlax in place of Chansey.

And the attacks themselves are ones I just checked on via a competitive calculator. Not ones I'd probably go with. Just getting an idea of a team to put together.

I see. Alakazam is gonna be big here-no darks, and Psychic doesn't have that many resists. Plus there are a number of good poison and fighting types in Kanto.

Snorlax>Chansey if you want attacking, but no special attacks. Don't be fooled by its good special movepool-most normals have those, and most suck at special attacking(Chansey, Snorlax, Tauros, Miltank-not Kanto, but just for example, Furret, Zangoose, etc.)

Ah. Good point. Only thing we have to fear (unless they've banned newer types of attacks) is any Pokemon that have dark type attacks.

Might take a look tonight to see what I have in OR/AS and check my older games too to see if there's anything good I can trade over. If not, might try to breed something. Experiment. It couldn't hurt.

I don't have time to go through it now, but I highlighted som things:

This colour means that I think it is bad and should be replaced, but could work sometimes.
This colour means that I think it is outright useless, or just completely outclassed (Like Giga drain over mega drain)

=)

EDIT: Maybe this wasn't very constructive lol, but it's a start I guess. I can give you some advice over PM tomoroow.

So I need a Haze/ Clear Smog Poke, but that means I have to get rid of something. Primeape or Nidoking? I really like them both, but they've been the two least useful Pokes, and compound a Psychoc weakness.

Also, is Alakazam ok w/ only Psychic and Psyshock for coverage? There are still things that resist Psychic like Slowbro and Starmie(defensive Starmie could mess up mono Psychic Alakazam.)

Omastar is the only Poke in Kanto that can set rocks and wipe away boosts(it has Haze, something w/ Clear Smog would be even better but nope.) Is there a good set for it w/ Haze and Stealth Rock? If so I can replace Aerodactyl instead, though that guy has been great. Beats Zam, Gengar, Dugtrio, hurts DNite a lot, etc.

So I have an anti-lead that also helps with the Alakazam issue.

Persian
Jolly Nature
Technician
252 Atk/ 252 Spe/ 4 HP
Fake Out
Bite
U-turn
Taunt

I wanted a fake out user which left me with Blastoise, Kanga, Raichu, Persian. Base 115 speed makes Persian the fastest fake out user in this competition. Adding STAB+ Technician boost to that fake out is also very nice.

Technician boosted Bite is an Alakazam killer. I think we can agree most Zams are going to be either timid or modest with max special attack and speed. Let the calculator do the math for me:
252 Atk Technician Persian Bite vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Alakazam: 128-152 (97.7 - 116%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO
Also that 30% chance to flinch can be critical.

If Zam is running a timid nature then it outspeeds Persian; however it cannot OHKO Persian:
252 SpA Alakazam Psychic vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Persian: 112-133 (79.4 - 94.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Alakazam Psyshock vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Persian: 106-126 (75.1 - 89.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

If ZAM is running modest then there is potential to OHKO Persian but now Persian outspeeds:
252+ SpA Alakazam Psychic vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Persian: 123-145 (87.2 - 102.8%) -- 25% chance to OHKO
252+ SpA Alakazam Psyshock vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Persian: 117-138 (82.9 - 97.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Taunt is there for those pesky rocks/ spikes/ set-up moves blah blah blah. And I wanted a Volt-Turn core so it gives Persian an out in hairy situations. So far so good. Thoughts?

Not sure if making a thread for this is allowed here, so I'll make a Role Compendium for Kanto Classic :]

I can add on to the lists as we go on. I'm trying to avoid adding on Pokemon that simply are unviable and outclassed in certain roles such as "Agility Parasect" or w/e, so not all the users in Gen 1 will be listed.

Not a bad start! Definitely add Minimize users to the set-uppers (so ofc Clef, but also Starmie and maybe Muk since it can Stockpile too). Also Shell Smashers (Cloyster and Omastar) need to be there too. Dragon Dance Lapras isn't super viable so that's probably why you left it out, but I've seen a couple people use it. Charizard is def a viable user of it though.

There are way more phasers than Zapdos... So many things get Roar: the starters, Nidos, Arcanine, Golem (who can tank a move from something with Sturdy and phase), Gyara, and Eeveelutions. Snorlax gets Whirlwind which is huge.

Magneton is a pretty huge Thunder Wave user coz Sturdy is good.

I like it how Clefable Checks is its own list, lol (and Clef is listed in it too). I think Snorlax should be moved closer to the front (if you've based the order off viability) as Body Slam, Fissure and Whirlwind are all really good.

Nidoking/ Primeape/ Alakazam/ Chansey/ Clefable/ Aerodactyl.

Does Dactyl have to run Taunt? I'm doing SR and three attacks since my team has two rock resists, and no weaknesses bar Dactyl itself, whichll often be a lead so it doesn't matter, so stopping SR setters don't seem too important, and coverage is super important.

Taunt aerodactyl is amazing in this format especially as a stealth rock setting lead. It is also great for clefable as well as chansey.

Thanks for your input :)

I'm curious as to what niche Charizard has as a DDancer besides being the fastest one. I'll add Minimize users as well. Yeah, I know my phaser list was small, just didn't see many other users of the move on my time with the ladder so far. I'll add those and input some of the other changes as well.

It's actually a singles competition!

I can see the Minimize Clefable and Chansey stall already though.
Haze tentacruel, wheezing shut that down. Plus tenta alright counters clefable. even if it's using the store power set.

Dragonite is an amazing mid, late game sweeper, as well as the best cleaner in the meta thinks to "Extreme Speed". Thanks to multi-scale, He will always set up DD, unless taunted, or locked in encore.

Aerodactyl is by far one of the best "Taunt" and "Stealth Rock" user in the meta. It is guaranteed to set rocks, as well as able to shut down other setters, and support mons. it even has a decent offensive presence with great coverage in EdgeQuake. it's even able to outspeed, and OHKO Alakazam with "Stone Edge"' The only Pokemon that can speed tie with Aerodactyl is Jolteon, and the only Pokemon that can out speed it is Electrode, both which are capable of OHKOing Aerodactyl. Both have to be wary of earthquake, which will OHKO Then. really the only con Aerodactyl has is that it's frail. meaning it can't take a hit for shit. It

^Golem KOs standard dactyl with any rock move, or 80-85 with iron head, so Taunting (or even SRing) Golem is pretty risky. Speaking of, what speed should adamant Golem be running? It's already so slow and I don't want to waste any if it could go on bulk instead.

you're better off running an offensive tank set. Golem is not going to outspeed anything.

Stealth Rock
Earthquake
Stone Edge
Sucker Punch

HP-156 Atk-252 Def-100
Adamant.

This is just a sample I thought up that that will give you power, and physical bulk. Of course you can put the evs how ever you want. I didn't bother investing in SDef because he won't be switching in on special attacks anyways.

Not entirely true. You can surely speed creep Chansey.

Golem
Ability: Sturdy
Level: 50
EVs: 212 HP / 252 Atk / 44 Spe
Adamant Nature

Earthquake has a good chance to 2HKO as well. Nifty.

Also, I watched one of my friends use this:

Rhydon
Ability: Lightning Rod
Level: 50
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Rock Polish
- Swords Dance

This thing's a monster. With the second-highest Attack stat in the meta which is boosted by SD and max speed Jolly helping it outpace the base 130 crowd such as Jolteon and Aerodactyl after a single Rock Polish, Double Dance Rhydon is more than capable of breaking offensive and defensive teams alike and can serve as a potent win condition. Even without the Eviolite and defensive investment, its 105/120 physical bulk is very good for a sweeper and helps you set up on physical attackers such as Snorlax, non willowisp Arcanine, Scyther and Aerodactyl as well as fat mons such as Chansey.

I was gonna lead with it most of the time actually, but most of that still applies: Stealth Rock/Sucker Punch/Explosion/**rock coverage**. Haven't decided on Rock Slide or Stone Edge yet; both KO Aerodactyl but Edge gets the 2HKO on bulky Dragonite. ((Unless I've miscalced Multiscale.)) It's all kinda up in the air ATM though, might swap out Explosion for Earthquake if the momentum gain doesn't end up being worth it. (Not too much is gonna want to switch into Explosion in this meta afaik, except maybe Gengar if it was also predicting Earthquake. But, then, Sucker Punch?) Gonna try an offensive Psychic Spam team for all the good it does.

Taunt aerodactyl is amazing in this format especially as a stealth rock setting lead. It is also great for clefable as well as chansey.

I run Stealth Rock/ Ice Fang/ Rock Slide/ Crunch, and I just don't see where I can fit Taunt. Aerodactyl is one of the few things that actually outspeeds Zam, so it makes sense to have a Crunch to OHKO, plus it hits Starmie, Gengar, and some odd Pokes like Exeggutor hard.

Ice Fang OHKOs Dugtrio(apparently that joke of a Poke can survive something-namely Dactyl's Crunch,) and is also good for all those grass types you may see(Vileplume, Venusaur, Victreebell, etc.) and anything else weak to ice and not dark or rock, such as the rock/ground crew, tho they all take pitiful damage from a weak physical attack.

Rock Slide is the main move, ofc. Probably don't need to defend it except to say it's better than Stone Edge. More accuracy, and a 30% chance to flinch, which Dactyl can easily abuse.

I don't come across too many grass types. Grass aren't an issue in my team. But I might experiment with crunch. being able to KO Alakazam is something critical.

Is it best to run Timid 252 Spe on Gengar? Or can it afford to run less Spe, or even a Modest Nature?

All Max Spe gets is speed tying other max speed base 110s(Other Gengar, Tauros, and Raichu,) and the next thing after those is Scyther. After that Primeape, so maybe enough speed for that, though I don't think Acrobatics is an OHKO. So just enough speed for max 85s?

For moves Clear Smog/ Shadow Ball/ T-Bolt/WoW...? Or maybe Psychic. Stupid thing doesn't get Ice Beam, and I don't think Icy Wind is worth it. Energy Ball/Giga Drain(the healing doesn't help much, but it's only a five point drop in BP,) could also be good for Rhydon, Omastar, and Golem, among other things.

If you're gonna participate in this competition, you'll definitely want to search around for some more Pokes. Wi-Fi is a good place, I don't think giveaways will help much for this competition(though there are the legendary birds,) but the Simple Trade thread is good, and if you're not asking for a whole lot(sometimes even if you are,) some people may be willing to help you for free.

Specifically, you want HA on Zam(you can DexNav for it in Granite Cave, you can also DexNav for a Clefairy on route 115, since you definitely want Clefable in this competition.)

Yea. Just haven't had as much time to play lately. I'll check that out.

I still have B, W and B and W 2 to check through tonight. Hopefully I can find some more, and I'll do some random hunting.

OK so judging by that you unfortunately have next to nothing that would be useful. I would say that you need to get to your Friend Safari and do some catching. Then get a 6 IV Ditto from one of the Wifi section giveaways and get breeding.

That's not meant to be harsh but assume that everyone that you face in these competitions have perfect Pokemon so you should to get on an even keel.

what do you guys think of Sun teams? I'm literally at the very top of the ladder with my current team, and now I just want to try something else. Sun seems interesting. But I just don't know if it's valuable when does meta.
