Project ORAS OU Core Building Competition V2 (Round 30: Stalkers) Results

EDIT: I was voting 2 its more standard but think it's just damn effective and comprises some extra threat control over core 4 with Meta. Although both cores are absurdly weak to offensive grounds, I like both

Also, please stop running non max speed Specs Volc. You are just asking Breloom to Spore you when there's no reason for that especially when most run Adamant. What is the extra HP saving you from anyway idk I rather outspeed the Lando-Ts that run more than 8 speed. Like I see the argument for Modest Nature but the speed creep on the 180 Spe set is to speed creep speed creepers and this usually won't result in a spread that will maintain traction in a metagame. Lando-T's normal speed creep is maybe the only one (ironic that I'm saying not to creep this) but plenty of people have risen above the conception that 8 speed is the given for all defensive Landos. I think the statistical frequency of needing to outspeed/speed tie things up to the 262 (or even 239) range is gonna come into play a lot more than having to live a Banded Azu Superpower which is probably accounting for about 30% of all Azu sets.

Ok I'm changing my vote based on further looking into EV spreads. Like I think the premise of core 2 is strongest but max HP 4 Spe Specs Volcanion is simply not good. Also to amend something from that post I think Tyranitar does benefit a lot from having Volcanion as a partner. It discourages Keldeo to an extent, checks Azu (ok run that spread here lol it tanks CB Azu Superpower after rocks right? makes more sense here than on the Mega Meta core), hard checks Scizor and gives you a secondary Talon switchin if you think they're a wisp set. Plus just dumping on Lando etc is nice

Voting core 3, since it has a proper Volcanion spread (imo) and looks fun

OK voting's over! The result was a tie between BrandonBeast and starry blanket so congrats! I'll add you to the hall of fame later because I'm running late for something, but I thought I'd do this before I went out.

Week 12: False Alarm
Building condition: At least one Pokémon must be holding a type resist berry

These things are legitimately my favorite items in the game because of how much they alleviate pressure when teambuilding by allowing things to lure and KO Pokémon that otherwise beat them. Lets see how well you utilise them in this week's cores!

Manaphy @ Wacan Berry
Ability: Hydration
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Tail Glow
- Rain Dance
- Scald
- Psychic

Tornadus-Therian @ Life Orb
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 76 Atk / 180 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Hurricane
- Superpower
- Knock Off
- Taunt

I think this is a really good core vs. stall and they compliment each other well. Manaphy is able to lure in threats to Tornadus such as Manectric, Raikou, and Thundurus while also being able to power through things like Ferrothorn and Rotom-W. Tornadus is there to check things like Serperior and takes advantage of rain with 100% accuracy from hurricanes.

Wacan Berry, fren.

Reserving Passho Volcarona + Mega Mane.

Yeah, this pretty much the best offensive core in existence & one of my favourite cores in ORAS. Passho Volcarona can get free set-ups on Water type attacks from Pokemon such as Specs Keldeo, Manaphy, Rotom-Wash, non CM Slowbro, Suicune, and so many more all day long & proceed to sweep through a large portion of the meta with its fantastic coverage. Meanwhile, Mega Manectric has no troubles taking on Volcarona's common checks and counters, such as CB Azumarill, Volcanion, Chary-Y & Talonflame with its STAB Thunderbolt.

Volcarona @ Passho Berry
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 72 HP / 252 SpA / 184 Spe
Timid Nature
- Quiver Dance
- Fire Blast
- Giga Drain
- Bug Buzz / Hidden Power Ground

Manectric @ Manectite
Ability: Lightning Rod
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Volt Switch
- Thunderbolt
- Flamethrower
- Hidden Power Ice

Landorus-T @ Yache Berry
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Swords Dance
- Rock Polish

Garchomp @ Life Orb
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 8 HP / 248 Atk / 252 Spe (Life Orb)
Naive Nature
- Earthquake
- Dragon Claw / Dragon Rush / Outrage
- Swords Dance
- Fire Blast
Groundspam ahoy! Basically this is a pretty bog-standard typespam where they aim to help weaken each-other's checks for each-other. DD Lando-T is insane but really hates PhysDef Counter Skarmory, so what better than to lure it with LO+Fire Blast Garchomp 'cause LO Chomp is powerful. I chose SD because I like SD chomper but TankChomp also works here for more oomph on its Fire Blasts and to provide SR support for Lando. Yache Berry is immensely good on DD Lando because it means that Mamoswine and Weavile don't take a shit on it and prematurely end its sweep, and it is particularly good with this core because it also stops Manectric from ruining your day and allows you to get whichever of SD or RP you didn't get off before on it before you KO it in case anything else faster or annoyingly fat is on the opposing team. All in all, I like this core a lot :)

Keldeo @ Coba Berry
Ability: Justified
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Scald
- Secret Sword
- Hydro Pump
- Icy Wind

Serperior @ Life Orb
Ability: Contrary
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Leaf Storm
- Dragon Pulse
- Hidden Power Fire
- Glare
Serperior's main checks on offense are flying types, mainly Talonflame and Tornt. Coba Berry Keldeo lures in said flying types quite easily and can eliminate them for Serperior. Talonflame is pretty obvious since keld can just click scald or hydro vs the thing and kill it while tornt needs some cheeky prediction with icy wind to beat, but it can go a great job luring them and putting Serp in a position to sweep. Not only that, but serp can also eliminate normal keld counters like the lati twins, starmie, slowbro, etc. which is really nice.

Landorus-Therian @ Yache Berry
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 56 HP / 220 Atk / 232 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Rock Polish
- Swords Dance

Raikou @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Calm Mind
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power Ice
- Volt Switch

Yache Berry double dance Landorus-T is already really awesome. People expect Earth Plate or Leftovers and can rely on the likes of Weavile or Mamoswine to revenge kill a Rock Polish boosted Landorus-T, and, thanks to Yache Berry, it can live a hit and easily KO both of them in return (Mamoswine does need a bit of prior damage sadly). It also lets it defeat Mega Manectric by tanking a Hidden Power Ice and KOing back with Earthquake, even at -1. Other than that, it's able to take other random Hidden Power Ices / Icy Winds from other Landorus-T, Raikou, Tornadus-T, Thundurus-T, and Jirachi.
Calm Mind Raikou is an awesome Pokemon and an awesome partner, as it can break down bulky Water-types such as Manaphy, Suicune, and Azumarill. It sets up against physcial walls such as Skarmory and the aforementioned Suicune, while Landorus-T can wear down Hippowdon. It also provides Volt Switch support to help get Landorus-T in safer, possibly giving it more opportunities to set up.

Latias-Mega @ Latiasite
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 8 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature

- Psyshock
- Roost

Jelli has been receiving more attention lately given its ability to wall Volcanion and other popular threats like Keld. While Mega Latias does perform well versus both of these Pokemon, it doesn't like being burned by Scald and Steam Eruption because being inflicted with said status cuts its longevity. As such, it's appreciative of Jelli's ability to serve as the main switch in to these attacks, allowing Mega Latias to be used more conservatively to avoid potential unwanted burns in several situations.

The above aside, these two work together in several other ways. For example, Mega Latias dislikes running into trappers like Tar and Weavile. Jelli has a tendency to invite these Pokemon in, and thanks to Colbur Berry, it's able to live their Dark STABs and retaliate back with a Will-O-Wisp. With Tar and Weavile burned, Mega Latias has an easier time sweeping with CM. Jelli also does a nice job dealing with other trappers standing in the way of a CM Mega Latias sweep, such as Mega Sciz. Being able to burn more defensively oriented obstacles to CM Mega Latias, like Ferro, is another plus. In exchange for this help, Mega Latias helps Jelli by handling several annoying Electric- and Grass-types. Examples include Breloom, Mega Venu, Mega Manec, and Thund-I. Being able to take care of other Pokemon capable of overpowering Jelli, such as Zard-Y, is also nice.

CM Mega Latias has been getting more love over BoltBeam sets and Jelli's viability has recently jumped, so the core represents some modern day trends. They work pretty nicely together and have some nice defensive synergy between them. Mega Latias and Jelli also fit nicely on the balanced teams they tend to end up on. They pair well with many other balanced staples like Ferro too, who appreciates Jelli to stop spinners like Starmie from removing the Spikes that do a nice job of wearing down Mega Latias' checks. Other classic balanced staples like Clefable, Heatran, and so on, also pair nicely here. This gives you a few options to choose from when building/picking partners to cover this core's weaknesses.

your manaphy has lefties instead of a berry

<-- mfw I realise that I've used literally every single one of these cores (right down to the EV spreads and choices of moveset) before and can confirm that they're all solid

I had fun giving them shitty names last week, so I did it again. You can vote for up to two cores, so best of luck to all entrants and may the best core win :]

Core 2 because Volcanion is really fun to use and Manectric although dropping in viability is able to support it well.

Core 3 because I really like the ground spam idea and how they lure in things for each other

loving the nicknames, Martin.
