Pawniard

QC: boltsandbombers / astroboy / Raseri
GP: The Dutch Plumberjack / P Squared

[OVERVIEW]

Thanks to its great offensive typing that grants it opportunities to use Swords Dance as well as its strong STAB attacks in Knock Off, Sucker Punch, and Iron Head, Pawniard is able to carve out a niche as a strong physical sweeper in the NU metagame. Furthermore, it has a decent ability in Defiant that can discourage the use of Defog from the opposing team, although it's very situational and Pawniard loses to most Defoggers. On the downside, Pawniard has very low Speed and Special Defense, and its typing leaves it vulnerable to a multitude of special attackers such as Pyroar and Samurott and common types in general such as Fire, Ground, and Fighting. In an offensive metagame full of Pokemon such as Sawk, Magmortar, and Lilligant, Pawniard struggles to find setup opportunities, as it's often 2HKOed by even resisted attacks such as Swellow's Boomburst. Pawniard is also very weak before it gains the boost from Swords Dance, so it struggles to get past physically defensive Pokemon such as Steelix and Torterra.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Swords Dance boosts Pawniard's Attack, allowing it to break through bulkier Pokemon and making it a threatening sweeper. Knock Off is Pawniard's most spammable move, as it hits hardest if the foe has an item and it can cripple Pokemon such as Gurdurr by removing its Eviolite. Sucker Punch allows Pawniard to pick off faster foes such as Floatzel, especially at +2 Attack. Iron Head also gains the STAB boost, and it is important in taking on Fairy-types such as Mega Audino and Rock-types such as Regirock as well as hitting Fighting-types such as Hariyama for neutral damage.

Set Details
========

Maximum Attack and Speed investment along with an Adamant nature makes Pawniard as strong and as fast as possible while still being able to outspeed Pokemon such as Golurk and Aurorus. Eviolite improves Pawniard's overall bulk, which allows it to take hits better and find more setup opportunities. Defiant discourages Defog from Pokemon such as Prinplup and Archeops and deters Pokemon with Intimidate such as Mawile from switching in.

Usage Tips
========

Knock Off should be Pawniard's main move of choice, especially early in battles, as it can be helpful to weaken its checks and counters upon switching in while also crippling them by removing their item. Once Pawniard is in against a Pokemon that doesn't threaten it such as defensive Mawile or Musharna, it should use Swords Dance for a possible late-game sweep once its checks are weakened. On a predicted Defog from Pokemon such as Prinplup and Archeops, Pawniard can be switched in to gain a +2 Attack boost, although it should be wary of Scald and Earthquake, respectively. Don't switch Pawniard directly into strong special attacks, as it has trouble taking even resisted hits from Pokemon such as Aurorus.

Team Options
========

Pawniard works best on hazard stacking teams thanks to its ability Defiant, so Pokemon such as Rhydon and Garbodor make for great partners for their ability to set up Stealth Rock, Spikes, and Toxic Spikes, respectively. Physical wallbreakers such as Tauros are helpful for breaking down physical walls so that Pawniard can sweep. On the contrary, other physical setup sweepers such as Samurott and Combusken appreciate Pawniard's ability to cripple and break down walls with Knock Off. Pawniard appreciates Pokemon such as Pelipper and Mesprit that can take on opposing Fighting-types, which Pawniard struggles with greatly. Pokemon that can check Ground-types, such as Ludicolo and Gourgeist-XL, are very helpful in providing switches into Pokemon such as Rhydon and Torterra, which Pawniard struggles with.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Low Kick allows Pawniard to better take on Steel- and Dark-types such as Steelix and opposing Pawniard more effectively. X-Scissor lets Pawniard hit Malamar for big damage before it is knocked out; additionally, it OHKOes Shiftry. Stealth Rock is an option over Swords Dance that provides Pawniard with more utility for teams as well as an effective way to beat Xatu in the process, although it takes away from Pawniard's main niche, which is being able to set up and sweep. Pursuit allows Pawniard to trap Pokemon on a predicted switch and get off chip damage, although it's often better to just use Knock Off on an incoming switch.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fighting-types**: Poliwrath, Gurdurr, Sawk, and Hariyama can all take advantage of Pawniard's quadruple weakness to Fighting-type moves and KO it with their respective STAB moves. Gurdurr can also use Pawniard as setup fodder, as Pawniard can't deal much damage to it and it can boost its Attack and Defense stats with Bulk Up.

**Ground-types**: Torterra, Steelix, and Quagsire all have no trouble taking Pawniard's attacks, and the former two can take advantage of Pawniard to set up Stealth Rock, while the latter can use Pawniard as setup fodder for Curse. Torterra and Quagsire also both have reliable recovery, making them almost surefire checks to Pawniard, and additionally, Quagsire has Unaware, so Attack boosts from Swords Dance don't affect it.

**Fire-types**: Pyroar, Magmortar, and Combusken are all able to exploit Pawniard's weakness to Fire-type moves and OHKO it, but if Pawniard is at +2 Attack, it can easily KO both Pyroar and Magmortar with Sucker Punch, although Pyroar can predict this and use Will-O-Wisp instead of attacking.

**Special Attackers**: Strong special attackers such as Floatzel and Lilligant have no trouble KOing Pawniard thanks to its low Special Defense stat.

  • Thanks to its great offensive typing that grants Pawniard opportunities to use Swords Dance as well as its strong STABs in Knock Off, Sucker Punch, and Iron Head, Pawniard is able to carve out a niche as a threatening physical sweeper in the NU metagame. tone down the language here, it portrays pawniard much better than it is
  • Furthermore, it has a great ability in Defiant that discourages the use of Defog from the opposing team as well as the switching in of Pokemon with Intimidate. defiant isnt a great ability because we have like 2 or 3 relevant defoggers and one relevant mon with intimidate

**Status**: A burn from moves such as Will-O-Wisp or Scald not only wears Pawniard down, but it also halves its Attack, making it much less effective in battle. Paralysis from moves such as Thunder Wave and Discharge halve Pawniard's Speed and can possibly make it unable to move on any given turn.

**Fire-types**: Pyroar, Magmortar, and Combusken are all able to exploit Pawniard's weakness to Fire-type moves and OHKO it, but if Pawniard is at +2 Attack, it can KO both Pyroar and Magmortar with Sucker Punch with ease, although Pyroar can use Will-O-Wisp instead of attacking to predict this.

**Special Attackers**: Strong special attackers such as Floatzel and Lilligant have no trouble KOing Pawniard thanks to its low Special Defense stat.

mention in the overview how pawniards really weak without a boost and generally struggles to get past physically defensive mons like steelix or torterra, as well as how its typing+poor defenses leave it vulnerable to common attacking types in ground, fire, and fighting.

in team options, give mesprit its own specific mention under hazard setters because it checks fighting types, is immune to ground, can set hazards and provide healing wish support.

make low kick the first point in other options b/c its pawns best option to hit steelix and has way more practical use than rocks or pursuit.

mention steelix under ground-types in checks & counters

implement this and qc 2/3, good job

mention steelix as a target for low kick, its the main one rn

also mention x-scissor in OO, you can outpace and damage malamar a bit before dying in a pinch, and it hits shiftry too

remove status from c&c it effects almost everything so its kind of a given

otherwise 3/3 Dundies
