VGC 17 Politoed

QC:Carbonific / Jio
GP:P Squared

[OVERVIEW]

* Politoed is one of the only two rain setters in VGC17, and because it has better bulk than Pelipper, it can stay in on threats for longer periods.
* Its pure Water typing gives it only two weaknesses, backing up its exceptional bulk.
* Another advantage is access to Encore and Perish Song. Encore can trap a foe into a move, making space for a teammate to set up easily, and Perish Song can guarantee wins when needed and can be useful when the opponent is on their last limb.
* Although Politoed has only two weaknesses, they are seen everywhere in the metagame, with Tapu Koko and Kartana being very common.

[SET]
name: Rain Support
move 1: Scald
move 2: Ice Beam
move 3: Encore / Perish Song
move 4: Protect
item: Sitrus Berry
ability: Drizzle
nature: Calm
evs: 220 HP / 148 Def / 84 SpA / 52 SpD / 4 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

* Scald is the main attacking move on the set, having STAB, a decent 80 Base Power, and a 30% chance to burn, which is useful in taking care of strong physical attackers.
* Ice Beam is mainly for coverage on Pokemon like Garchomp and Salamence, as well as hitting Pokemon that resist Scald.
* Encore can neutralize threats using moves like Protect, giving teammates like Dragon Dance Gyarados and Leech Seed Celesteela chances to set up.
* Perish Song can force out setup sweepers like Snorlax and works when the opponent has their last two Pokemon on the field. This guarantees a win in some situations.
* Protect can give Politoed a turn to stay safe while another teammate switches in or takes care of a threat so Politoed doesn't take any damage.

Set Details
========

* Sitrus Berry is used to keep Politoed on the field for longer and give it more bulk.
* Drizzle sets rain and thus powers up Scald, gives boosts to other Water-type moves, and aids Swift Swim users, as well as decreasing the power of Fire-type damage.
* A Calm nature complements Politoed's highest base stat, providing the greatest benefit to Politoed.
* The EVs are used to OHKO uninvested Arcanine with Scald and to survive a Jolly Garchomp's Tectonic Rage as well as Timid Tapu Koko's Thunderbolt.

Usage Tips
========

* Politoed's main role is to bring in rain to support teammates and to boost Scald's power in the rain. It should only bring in rain and switch out most of the time.
* Politoed's role should be thought about when there is a weather setter on the opposing team. Bringing Politoed in as a lead can sometimes render Drizzle useless, sacrificing a turn to switch Politoed out.
* Politoed should switch in when there is another weather setter on the field like a Drought or Sand Stream Pokemon to counter it, even if rain isn't needed, as it can interfere with the opponent's strategy. It should also switch back in when the rain has ended in order to reset it.
* Perish Song should only be used against setup sweepers or at the end of the game. This is because there is no reason to use it before, as the opponent can just switch their Pokemon out.

Team Options
========

* A Swift Swim user like Golduck pairs perfectly with Politoed, as it can take advantage of the rain being set up.
* Lightning Rod Pokemon like Alolan Marowak and Togedemaru help to cover Politoed's weakness to Electric-types.
* Grass-types like Kartana like the advantage of rain to lessen Fire-type damage and can take advantage of Politoed's Encore support to sweep the opposing team.
* Pokemon like Dragonite that use Thunder and Hurricane also pair well with Politoed, as these attacks will always hit in the rain.
* A fast Electric-type like Tapu Koko pairs well with Politoed, as it can use perfectly accurate Thunder in the rain as well as dealing with Water-types.

[SET]
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Scald
move 2: Hydro Pump
move 3: Ice Beam
move 4: Encore / Rain Dance
item: Choice Scarf
ability: Drizzle
nature: Timid
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

* Scald is the most often used move on the set, as it is easily spammable with decent power and a burn chance, which is very useful when going up against physical attackers that threaten Politoed.
* Hydro Pump is the strongest move Politoed has and can leave a dent in the opposing team. The only downside is its shaky accuracy.
* Ice Beam can hit most notably some of the most common Pokemon in the metagame like Garchomp, Mandibuzz, and Salamence, as well as giving coverage against types that Scald can't hit.
* Encore can trap foes into moves and give space for teammates to take out the Pokemon at hand. Rain Dance can also work if you are expecting a weather setter like Torkoal or Gigalith to come in; in these situations, Politoed can manually set up rain again, making the switch useless. However, then Politoed must switch out and back in to use an attacking move, as it will be locked into Rain Dance.

Set Details
========

* Drizzle can help Politoed as well as other teammates, with rain having various benefits like ensuring Hurricane and Thunder never miss, lessening Fire-type damage, and boosting Water-type damage.
* A Timid nature gives Politoed maximum Speed to outspeed most of the unboosted metagame.
* The EVs are designed to focus on the main areas Politoed must cover. Maximum Special Attack investment allows Politoed to hit as hard as possible, while the Speed investment paired with Choice Scarf lets Politoed outspeed positive-natured Pokemon with base 100 Speed.

Usage Tips
========

* Leading with Choice Scarf Politoed against a team with a weather setter is not a good idea, as it being one of the fastest weather setters in VGC17 means Drizzle will be overridden.
* Choice Scarf isn't as used as the support set, so this can get a couple of surprise KOs early-game without the opponent expecting it.
* Scald can get burns early-game, helping to wear down physical threats, while Hydro Pump can get KOs quicker.
* Encore and Rain Dance are mainly for an emergency when either a threat must be stopped temporarily or rain has been countered. Thinking one turn ahead is a good idea to keep momentum on the team.

Team Options
========

* Swift Swim users, mainly Golduck, make use of the rain being set up, increasing their Speed.
* Pokemon that can cover up for Politoed's weaknesses should be used, like a Ground-type such as Krookodile or a Flying-type like Salamence.
* Lightning Rod users like Alolan Marowak and Togedemaru are also appreciated to combat Electric-types.
* Grass-types like Tapu Bulu and Kartana appreciate Politoed, as the rain lessens Fire-type damage, and they resist Politoed's weaknesses as well as helping to break through Water-types, which Politoed has a hard time against.
* Electric-types like Magnezone and Vikavolt that use Thunder appreciate the rain boosting the attack's accuracy, and they can deal with Water-types.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

* Surf can be used in tandem with Gastrodon to give it support, though Politoed prefers the burn chance of Scald.
* A Wacan Berry can be used to combat Electric-types, but Sitrus Berry is more useful for its versatility and effectiveness against all types.
* Leftovers is a viable option, seeing as Politoed has no recovery moves, but Sitrus Berry is preferred due to its higher recovery across the first four turns.
* Haze can be used to interfere with setup sweepers like Gyarados.
* Choice Specs can be used instead of Choice Scarf if more power is needed, though Politoed prefers the Speed boost from Choice Scarf.
* Hidden Power Grass can be used to combat Gastrodon and other Water-types but outside of that has no real use.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Opposing Weather Conditions**: Politoed relies heavily on the rain to back up its stats and to help its teammates, so other weather conditions interfere with this strategy. Pokemon like Torkoal, Gigalith, and Alolan Ninetales are all examples of opposing weather setters.

**Grass-types**: Politoed has trouble taking hits from the majority of Grass-types in the tier, including hard hitters like Tapu Bulu and Kartana and other minor threats like Lilligant. Although Politoed can do some damage with Ice Beam if it survives, its subpar Special Attack means it won't likely be getting many KOs.

**Electric-types**: Politoed has trouble staying in on most Electric-types in the format, as most of them, like Tapu Koko and Togedemaru, outspeed it and can OHKO it with Thunder and Zing Zap.

**Gastrodon**: Gastrodon redirects Scald and Hydro Pump thanks to Storm Drain and interferes when Politoed is trying to hit another Pokemon. This forces Politoed out in most cases.

Remove all references to entry hazards because they're garbage in VGC and aren't used, and add a second Choice Scarf set. I'll give this a full check after that's done.

Set (1)
  • Remove Damp Rock and Bold.
  • Use this spread: Calm + 220 HP / 148 Def / 84 SpA / 52 SpD / 4 Spe. Here's what it does:
84 SpA Politoed Scald vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Arcanine in Rain: 168-198 (101.8 - 120%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Garchomp Tectonic Rage (180 BP) vs. 220 HP / 148 Def Politoed: 162-192 (83.9 - 99.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Tapu Koko Thunderbolt vs. 220 HP / 52+ SpD Politoed in Electric Terrain: 162-192 (83.9 - 99.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Moves (1)
  • The description for Protect isn't entirely accurate, as Politoed is bulky and has no 4x weaknesses, so it doesn't need to scout moves that badly. You should, for example, say that it allows Politoed to shield itself while a partner eliminates a threat or switches.
Set Details (1)
  • Talk about these in the order they're listed on the set (ie. Items(s) > Ability > Nature & EVs)
Usage Tips (1)
  • This whole section is pretty much just a repeat of the "Moves" section, which is bad. Scrap everything except the Perish Song bullet point. Talk about these points:
  • When should you bring Politoed out? Does it work well as a lead, or brung in the back? Think about opposing weather.
  • What role does Politoed serve on teams; what is it trying to accomplish?
  • If Politoed isn't currently on the field, when is a good time to switch it back in?
Team Options (both)
  • Add mentions of Grass-types such as Tapu Bulu and Kartana (who take less damage from Fire in rain, can switch into Electric attacks aimed at Politoed, and deal with opposing Water-types...), Electric-types such as Tapu Koko and Magnezone (can deal with Water-types and use STAB Thunder), and Grass-type checks such as Alolan Muk and Arcanine.
Set (2)
  • New moves:
1: Hydro Pump
2: Scald
3: Ice Beam
4: Encore / Rain Dance

Set Details (2)

  • Talk about Drizzle.
Other Options
  • Add Wacan Berry, Choice Specs, and Hidden Power Grass.
  • Remove Iron Ball, Rindo Berry, and Hidden Power Electric.
Checks and Counters
  • Remove the Water-types header.
  • Add Gastrodon.

Post when you've implemented the above and I'll give it another look.

You missed these two :toast::
Team Options (both)
  • Add Electric-types such as Tapu Koko and Magnezone (can deal with Water-types and use STAB Thunder), and Grass-type checks such as Alolan Muk and Arcanine.
Set Details (2)
  • Talk about Drizzle.
Also, you need to specifically state in Set Details that the EV spread for the first set is aimed offensively at OHKOing uninvested Arcanine, and defensively at surviving Jolly Garchomp's Tectonic Rage and Timid Tapu Koko's Thunderbolt. Just saying they're for general bulk doesn't inform the reader of what attacks their Politoed can expect to survive.

Overview
  • In the second bullet point, note that Politoed's greater overall bulk is another reason to use it over Pelipper.
Moves 1
  • You wouldn't use Ice Beam against Krookodile; Scald does more damage. Mention Salamence instead.
  • "Perish Song is the main reason Politoed is used over Pelipper. It can" - Remove the highlighted.
Set Details 1
  • "Although Politoed will have to switch in multiple times to keep the rain up." - What is this referring to?
  • "HP,Def and SpD investment is to give Politoed higher Bulk and Even out it’s Defenses, while Spe and SpA investment is to increase Politoeds damage output. These EVs can deal" - Remove the highlighted.
Usage Tips 1
  • Move the second bullet point to being the first.
Team Options 1
  • On the second bullet point, mention Dragonite, as it can use STAB Hurricane and Thunder.
Set 2
  • Move Scald up to move #1 since you stated it's the most commonly selected in Moves.
Moves 2
  • Again, you wouldn't use Ice Beam on Krookodile.
Usage Tips 2
  • The second and third bullet points contradict each other; they both state that their respective moves should be preferred. Clarify by saying that Scald is the staple move, whilst Hydro Pump is an alternative when more power is needed.
  • A lot of the points I made in my first check with regards to Usage Tips 1 also apply here.
    • I'm not learning anything about what role Choice Scarf Politoed plays on a team, when to bring it out initially, whether switching it back into attacks is ok etc...
Team Options 2
  • Need to mention Swift Swim users like Golduck, as on the first set.
  • Add Kartana alongside Tapu Bulu.
  • Add Vikavolt alongside Magnezone.
Other Options
  • Remove Hydro Pump, since it's on a main set now.
Checks and Counters
  • You're a little ambiguous as to why Gastrodon counters Politoed. Specifically mention that Storm Drain redirects Politoed's STAB moves, protecting it and its partner.

Again, post when implemented.

key: remove add note

Overview

  • "Politoeds main reason of use over Pelipper Another advantage is its access to Encore and Perish Song." - The two Pokemon are different enough that I'd be hesitant to point at any one attribute and call it the "main reason" to use one over the other. For example, if you just didn't need a Tailwind setter, and preferred Politoed's greater bulk, then Encore and Perish Song might not factor into the decision to use it.
Set Details 1
  • "The EVs can deal with common threats like are used to OHKO uninvested Arcanine with Scald and to survive..." - Making it clearer that Scald is the means by which Arcanine is dealt with.
Team Options 1
  • "Pokemon such as Dragonite that use Thunder and Hurricane also pair well with Politoed as they will always hit in the Rain. Pokemon like Dragonite can make use of the rain by using STAB Hurricane and Thunder." - Otherwise you're kind of just saying the same thing twice.
Usage Tips 2
  • Honestly, this section is still quite poor. The first bullet point is repeating the bullet point that preceded it in Set Details, the second point needs to be rephrased to be cautionary rather than reactionary, and the third bullet point is obvious.
  • Delete the aforementioned and talk about, for example, these points:
    • What role does Politoed serve on teams? Think about both its ability, and the differences between this and the Support set.
    • How early on should Politoed be brought out? Should it be used as a lead? What about against opposing weather?
    • Why is Scald the primary move over Hydro Pump? What are the benefits?
    • What are the appropriate times to use Encore or Rain Dance over an attacking move, bearing in mind that this set is more offensively oriented?
Checks and Counters
  • "**Gastrodon**: (add colon) Gastrodon doesn't really worry about what a Politoed can do as it can tank any attacks it takes redirects Scald and Hydro Pump thanks to Storm Drain. Scald and Hydro Pump can be tanked and..." - Is much more concise.

Nail the Usage Tips and this will probably be the last check, as it otherwise looks good!

Yeah
I guess it has something to do with me not liking Choice Items as much.
isn't really my cup of Tea.
Ok i'm sure i'm good this time

I was the one who changed the bullet point's dashes to asterisks if you were wondering. They need to be that way to be uploaded to the site.

Overview
  • Being a pure Water-type gives only two weaknesses making Politoed a very useful Pokemon.
    - "Useful Pokemon" is a pretty generic way of putting it. Move this to being bullet point three, and rephrase to state that a lack of weaknesses compliment the aforementioned bulk.
Moves 1
  • Perish Song can give teammates cover and works when the opponent has their last two Pokemon on the field. This guarantees a win in some situations.
    - I'm not sure what you mean by "give teammates cover"; I think you're safe to just remove that part. I'd add that Perish Song is also useful for forcing setup users like Snorlax out, which they'd otherwise be reluctant to do.
Set Details 1
  • Sitrus Berry is to keep Politoed on the field for longer and give it more bulk and keep it on the field longer.
    - Remove the highlighted; it's repetition.
  • Mention that Drizzle also reduces the damage of Fire-type attacks.
  • Calm Nature gives Politoed good defenses complementing its high SpD. Attack isn't needed.
    - I'd rephrase the first half of this to just stating that Calm is used because it boosts Politoed's highest stat, and therefore provides the greatest benefit.
Usage Tips 1
  • For point #3, I'd note that even if you don't directly benefit from resetting the rain, removing the opponent's weather is still likely to be a hindrance to their strategy.
Team Options 1
  • Move point #2 to being point #4 above the fast Electric-types mention, so we have the Thunder users together.
Set Details 2
  • Drizzle can help Politoed as well as other teammates with rain having benefits like Hurricane and Thunder never missing as well as lessening Fire-type damage while boosting Water-type damage. Drizzle heavily supports Politoed besides its flaws.
    - Remove the highlighted.
Usage Tips 2
  • Just like the Support set leading with Politoed against a team with a weather setter is not a good Idea. as Drizzle may be countered unless Rain Dance is used that turn.
    - I'd note that this is particularly the case on the Choice Scarf set, since the increased Speed all but guarantees that Politoed will be the fastest weather setter to hit the field.
  • Scald can get burns early game, helping to wear down physical threats and Hydro Pump can get KO's quicker though Scald should be used early game to wear down the opposing team as fast as possible.
    - Saying the same thing twice again.
  • Switching out after using Encore or Rain Dance is a must.
    - I'd rephrase this to make it more cautionary. For example, say that it's important to think a turn ahead before using Encore or Rain Dance to ensure you're not excessively killing momentum by doing so, as you'll likely have to switch out.
Team Options 2
  • Pokemon that can cover up for Politoed's weaknesses should be used like Ground and Flying-types.
    - You need to include examples. For example, Krookodile covers the former, while Salamence covers the latter.
  • Delete the third bullet point, as you can kind of say this about every offensive Pokemon.
  • Lightning Rod users are also appreciated to combat Electric-types.
    - Again, need examples, such as Alolan Marowak and Togedemaru.
  • can help Politoed take care of other Pokemon it has trouble dealing with.
    - This statement is kind of useless since you don't make it explicit what Pokemon Politoed has trouble dealing with. Say instead that they help to power through opposing Water-types, which Politoed deals little damage to.
Other Options
  • Wacan Berry can be used to combat Electric-types but being a one time use item isn't helpful.
    - This isn't the reason Wacan Berry is uncommon, since Sitrus Berry is also a one-time use and is the premier item. Just state that Sitrus Berry's versatility is often preferred, since it's useful against every type.
  • but Sitrus Berry is preferred with higher recovery before the first four turns.
    - Leftovers recovers the same amount by turn four, and more by turn five, so this distinction is needed.
Checks and Counters
  • Although Politoed can do some damage with Ice Beam if it survives though it is very unlikely it will OHKO the Pokemon.
    - This sentence makes Ice Beam sound retaliatory, which often wouldn't apply to the Choice Scarf set. I'd just state that despite Politoed's access to Ice Beam, its middling Special Attack means that it's unlikely to pick up many KOs.
  • Politoed has no real way to even threaten Electric-types outside Hidden Power.
    - Scald is likely to do more damage than Hidden Power Ground since it gets a STAB + rain boost, so this should be removed. Just focus on the fact that Politoed is threatened heavily by Electric-types, rather than on how much damage Politoed does back.

I was planning on making the previous check the last one, but I noticed a lot of small things while rereading this, so I guess this is the real last one. Post when done and I'll look over the implementation before giving this a stamp.

Before this gets GP'd I noticed something.

"* Encore can neutralize threats using moves like Protect, giving teammates chances to setup, like Gyarados’ Dragon Dance and Celesteela’s Leech Seed."

are gyara and celesteela examples of threats that can be encored, or examples of teammates that want to set up?
