Reffing 202 - The Almighty Battle of ZhengTann (Tutor) vs SubwayJ (Tutee) ft. a grotle

A startled looking trainer runs into the arena and begins to look around at the mostly empty seats.

2ykzy1f.gif

"Oh dear I hope I'm not late, that would be a very poor start to this whole ordeal."

The trainer proceeds to fix his bow tie and wipe some dust off of his pants before he takes out his five pokéballs for the upcoming battle. Just then, a voice booms out from the previously unoccupied opposing platform.

Spr_B2W2_Nate_2.png

"Hmmmm late are we SubwayJ? I hope this doesn't put a damper on your skills, cause I intend to test your knowledge of this game to the fullest!"

trevenant.gif

<"Hmmmmmm, insulting my trainer are we...??? It appears you don't value your life all that much.....">

2ykzy1f.gif

"Calm Obsidian, he's just doing his job, and as for us we have a job ourselves to do! Speaking of which, let's get going on that!"

Haxorus(*) Natsu (M)
612.png

Just like his namesake, Natsu is an orphan, having no recollection of his parents’ fate. As such, Natsu loneliness made him grew to be very independent, to the point where he will erupt in great battle fury whenever his freedom is threatened. However, he is very much attached to his trainer, Zt, looking up to him as a partner as they search the wilds for Natsu’s direct lineage. Natsu doesn’t sharpen his tusks on a regular basis – unlike some Axews, he prefers a thicker tusk, even though they break off at pretty much the same intervals due to his affinity for intense fights. Natsu is always in a fierce competition with Gray, often challenging the other into mock spars, but the rivalry comes with respect and loyalty towards each other too. Natsu fights with the ferocity that comes with every Dragon – by fang and claw, for the very survival of his world and existence.

Beaten down at every turn never shakes Natsu's confidence - to him, a loss is just another step towards being stronger. Having new members to the team suddenly wrought certain changes to his fighting spirit. Willing to forsake his own safety for that of his friends, Natsu's newfound family is his main source of strength to improve himself and keep going.

Learning to fight with a clear mind, even in the midst of battle rage, is not easy - but Natsu is now one of the few that did it. Through rigorous training, he bridged the gap between instinct and thought, acting on cues his opponent didn't even realise to counter and parry at precisely the same time they make their move. Broadening his mind's eye also allows Natsu to make use of the environment more efficiently, as well as track his opponents battle habits - something only Gajeel can match, which became a newfound reason they keep coming to blows.

Nature: Jolly (+15% Speed, -1 SpA, +14% Acc)

Type:
Dragon Type: Dragon STAB; Thrash or Outrage will not be disrupted by oncoming damage.

Abilities:
Ability 1: Mold Breaker
Type: Passive
Whenever this Pokemon attacks, it emits an invisible, blindingly quick pulse preceding the attack that disables the opponents natural abilities (e.g. Levitators plummet towards the ground before Earthquake hits, Volt Absorb will not absorb electric attacks, Clear Body does not prevent stat-drops, etc.)

Ability 2: Rivalry
Type: Passive
This Pokemon has a primal response to competition and mating, increasing the Base Attack Power of all its attacks by two (2) when it attacks an opponent of the same gender, and decreasing the power of all its attacks by two (2) when it attacks an opponent of the opposite gender.

Ability 3: Unnerve (DW unlocked)
Type: Passive
The Pokemon's presence causes immense tension in the opponent, preventing them from eating a held Berry. Natural Gift may still be used.

Camerupt - Elfman (M)
323.png

"Hey mon," is probably Elfman's QOTD, all day, everyday. His easy-going attitude is reflective of his species' nature - slowly pacing on with the simple pleasures of daily life. Or so it seems. Elfman is as stubborn as they come - in fact, he got into a tussle with Natsu just because they wanted to cross the same (outer) side of the ledge. It took Gray's help to wrestle him down (a fact all but Gray is unhappy about) but Zheng's capture brought him into the family. Being slow to anger doesn't mean Elfman is slow on the uptake, but it does mean that he's slow to cooldown after he gets really riled up.

Having a family to be with changes Elfman - he is becoming more and more a stolid guardian than a laid-back jock. Steadfast to the point of tactless, he will not give way if he feels that his family is threatened. He is especially protective of Mirajane, and will often go out of his way to help her in any way perceived possible.

Being able to mega-evolve is something Elfman cherish. For one thing, he actually can take life at a slower pace because of that. For another, he punched harder, meaning he can force his opponents to dance for him, per se, but eventually they'll have to duke it out like "real mons" if they want to win.

Nature: Quiet (+1 SpAtk, -15% Speed, -10% evasion)

Type:
Fire type: Fire STAB; immune to burn status.

Ground type: Ground STAB; immune to Sandstorm. Ignores Arena restrictions on Dig and Seismic Attacks for Arenas in which any land mass exists, Evasive Digging reduced from 6 per action Energy Cost to 5 per action.

Abilities:
Ability 1: Magma Armour
Type: Passive
Elfman has a strong, heated armor that makes it incapable of being frozen. His armor also reduces the Base Attack Power of all incoming attacks by one (1).

Ability 2: Solid Rock
Type: Passive
Elfman’s solid body and durable constitution causes the Base Attack Power of incoming super-effective attacks to be reduced by two (2).

Ability 3: Anger Point (DW Unlocked)
Type: Passive
When struck with a critical hit, Elfman becomes enraged and its Attack rises to maximum (Stage 6). However, his Attack will drop up to two (2) stages at the end of each round instead of one (1) stage until it reaches the Pokemon's natural Attack stage. Critical hits from self-targeting moves do not activate Anger Point.

110px-323Camerupt-Mega.png

Ability 4: Sheer Force (Mega-Evo)
At default, Elfman energizes all his attacks with a secondary effect (These are damaging moves that either lower the target's stats, raise the user's stats, or inflict a status condition on the target). That way, the Base Attack Power of every move with a secondary effect increases by two (2), but they will never have their usual secondary effect. When toggled, no effect.

Honchkrow – Gajeel (M)
430.png

Gajeel is rather different, compared to the rest of the lot - probably his dark instincts gave him a bit of a "lone wolf" attitude. Efficient in his ways, smart in his pose, Gajeel would have a hard time fitting in - except that the girls are incredibly forgiving, and while the guys wouldn't hesitate bringing on a throwdown (save for Elfman, who repaid his indifference with barely a shrug), they never keep past grudges. Its what drove Gajeel to approach Zheng after many days of stalking them - eating, living, fighting with the affectionate way only siblings might have had. He is no slouch either - holding his own even against Erza is no small feat in the family.

Having treasure-hunted a Dusk Stone, Gajeel spent some days learning how to learn the arts native to his species, guarded by Pantherlily in the progress. The transformation itself is painful, but having endured it, something seems... both more and less in him now. When Zheng found out about his sudden bursts of suppressed emotions, it can only be attributed to Gajeel's efforts. Seeing it as only the results of his evolution, Zheng did nothing else but allow him to discover this new path, mostly on his own. What Zheng didn't know though, was that the lads have secretly form an agreement - to take turns watch over Gajeel whenever he had one of his bursts.

Nature: Mild (+1 SpA, -1 Def)

Type:
Dark type: Dark STAB; ignores Attract and Confusion status entirely when using Dark-type damaging and non-damaging attacks.

Flying type: Flying STAB; immunity to Ground attacks and the Arena Trap Ability except under the effects of Smack Down and Gravity, even for ground-based flying Pokemon. Will always hit foes with Dig (except other Flying types) and Dive. Cannot be hit by Dive unless the attacking Pokemon has a size class greater than four (4). Unaffected by Spikes or Toxic Spikes. when switching in. Able to hit Pokemon in the evasive stage of Bounce, Fly or Sky Drop with single target moves that hit Pokemon on the field regardless of position.

Abilities:
Ability 1: Insomnia
Type: Passive
This Pokemon is immune to sleep induced by other Pokemon. Its normal state of sleeplessness makes it take 1 less damage and energy/action from Ghost Curse. If it is put to sleep by a Pokemon with Mold Breaker, it will wake up the next action.

Ability 2: Super Luck
Type: Passive
This Pokemon’s natural skill increases its critical hit levels one stage above other Pokemon, making its normal moves inflict critical hits 12.5% of the time and its high critical hit moves inflict critical hits 25% of the time.

Ability 3: Moxie (DW Unlocked)
Type: Passive
This Pokemon gets psyched after it earns a KO on an opposing Pokemon, increasing its attack by one (1) stage. This boost is maintained at the end of each round.

Vali Lucifer, "White Dragon Emperor" - Aerodactyl (M)
142.png

Born to a lineage of Aerodactyl, with lineages going back as far as time immemorial, Vali was one of the few exceptional case born with great potential. But only one of them. And so he struggled to rise far and above those before it, with the competitive spirit beyond what most would even comprehend. He would use every bit of strength at his disposal just to further his training, and to beat every strong opponent that not just stood in his way, but also those he actively seek out. Currently his long-term project involves resurrecting God to Its True Forme, and challenging it to combat.

Vali's lineage and raw power means his presence fills the air with intense anxiety, and any damaging or status attack launched at him would cost the his opponents two (2) more energy to perform without sufficient will to overcome his.

Ability 3: Unnerve (Hidden)
Type: Passive
The Pokemon's presence causes immense tension in the opponent, preventing them from eating a held Berry. Natural Gift may still be used.

The Pokemon loses the typing, abilities and stats of its old form and gains those of its new form. While a Pokemon evolving outside of battle may sometimes pick up new moves for free, a Pokemon that evolves during battle doesn't gain any such moves until after the battle.

Torterra will NOT have Wood Hammer to use this battle also, Torterra will have Rank 4 Defense not Rank 3.

(Also make sure to update "Grotle" to "Torterra" in the hide tag and name post)

Does any of this impact your choice to evolve ZhengTann?

Uh, knowing my luck, this will probably not go well. Thanks for discussing stuff with me through IRC and helping me by pointing out my interpretation errors :)
[08:17:01] SubwayJ Zt
[08:17:04] Zt is sadz
[08:17:12] SubwayJ Are you cowering in fear
[08:17:23] SubwayJ OF MY SUPREME STRONGMONS
[08:17:28] Zt I was wondering why you'd Sub Electrify, actually.
[08:17:39] Zt I probably could've made Aurorus a non-factor by A2.
[08:18:18] Zt Like, I'm playing to win and you're playing to showcase - our roles kinda reveresed, heh.
[08:18:31] SubwayJ Wait what do you mean
[08:18:33] SubwayJ ??
[08:18:55] SubwayJ Electrify allows Aurorus to actually live things
...... ......
[08:19:40] Zt You're Electrifying Haxorus, trying to use non-STAB attacks.
[08:20:06] Zt Or at least trying to?
[08:20:21] SubwayJ I'm so confused what do you mean
...... ......
[08:21:25] Zt So my orders would be,
[08:21:25] Zt Superpower combo > combo cooldown > /filler/
[08:21:25] Zt Leaf Storm combo > cooldown > filler
...... ......
[08:23:29] SubwayJ Zt, Electrify doesn't change type
[08:23:36] SubwayJ It changes the next attacks type
[08:23:43] SubwayJ So Aurorus is still Ice/Rock
[08:23:45] Zt Oh.
[08:23:47] Zt Right.
[08:23:49] SubwayJ Superpower Combo becomes Electric
[08:23:54] Zt I got it wrong all the time!
[08:24:04] Zt Okay my bad.

Welcome one and all to this exciting Reffing 202 match! We start with a very exciting matchup with SubwayJ sending out his MAJESTIC rainbow dinosaur Iris the Aurorus and his extremely cunning electric lizard Twitch the Heliolisk! Zheng's pokemon already stand on the field. The wise powerful axe dino Natsu the Haxorus and his ... Grotle? The small turtle takes a few steps towards the large monitor and sees the lineup of his opposing team and obviously something about it gave him great inspiration. He begins to glow and morph shape until he finally becomes the powerful land turtle Droy the Torterra! What's this? It appears that Iris wasn't quite happy with the scenery and summons a Hailstorm to the field, causing the other pokemon to start shivering, how could this affect the tide of battle?

Once the pokemon get ready and set, the battle begins! First to move is Natsu, running to the large rock nearby and use his axe to cut some off and drop on his foes in a horrible Rock Slide with his purple orb using some of his life in order to amplify their strength! Twitch seems unfazed by this and quickly unfolds his solar panel mane to absorb whatever remaining sunlight can be seen through the hail, and clutches his Sun Stone tight to launch a beam of multicoloured light at Droy! The beam evidently disorients the large turtle and causes him to become Confused! Feeling that not enough damage has been done Iris proceeds to use the hail she summoned earlier and blow a huge Blizzard at her opponents, it seems to leave both of them quite chilled, but they live through it. A combination of the Blizzard and bright light must have caused Droy to forget his orders! He attempts to summon a screen of light, but in doing so, runs in to the screen, both smashing it and hurting himself! After the first action's commotion the pokemon all seem quite damaged, especially the non ice types as the hail pelts them, intensifying their wounds!

After recovering their breath a bit, both Twitch and Iris begin to use their intense voices at their foes, Iris' being very low and deep, and Twitch's very high and screechy. These seem to damage Droy and Natsu quite a bit, especially Iris' having seemingly been amplified by her icy composition. Natsu doesn't seem distracted whatsoever by the voices though, and proceeds to strike Iris with his tail after being dipped in water knocking the dino over. Barely giving Iris time to get up, Droy channels his inner power and strikes her while surrounded by a blue aura! The dinosaur cannot handle this last hit and is knocked out after hitting the ground!

As the hail continues to fall, striking each of the remaining battlers, Natsu is still recovering from his previous action. Not giving the other foe time to catch breath, Twitch sends another beam of light at the turtle! Because of his earlier injuries, Droy must have not had the strength to use his Focus Sash and the beam knocks him out!

The first round concludes with both sides having lost a member, but the lizard in seemingly better shape than the axe dino! They look each other in the eyes through the hail that remains from Iris, and await further orders from their trainers.

We'll have to rollback on the round :(
  • "...... Additionally, if the Pokemon takes at least 16 damage from a single attack, its confusion counter drops to 0 immediately." Which means that Signal Beam confusion A1 amounted to nothing, and Torterra gets to put up the Light Screen. Yes I know, people barely remember this silly ruling.
  • Ground resists Bug, meaning Signal Beam hits neutrally.
  • Torterra has Shell Armour, so you won't have to roll for crits.
  • I am NOT using up your DQ warning. I know you did place LoAs, and I am not going to be super-stingy with the time.
