RM Ground team (mostly)

Hey All,

So I am in with a group that basically does an online Gym system. I am applying to be a backup leader for the ground Gym. Our rules are Smogon OU. The Gym teams must have 5 pokemon of their type. We are allowed 1 "rounder" to counteract some of our weaknesses. Challengers are not limited by typing.

This is my first rough draft which is currently being tested on Pokemon showdown. Couple notes: 1) if you recommend a mon be replaceds it's gotta be another ground mon (except for the rounder) 2) This is a cartridge based group and I have pretty much no access to pokebank. So things like Landorus or Iron head Excadrill are basically outside the realm of possibility. Thanks in advance for any input! On to the team!

Torterra @ Big Root
Ability: Overgrow
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef
Calm Nature
  • Giga Drain
  • Leech Seed
  • Synthesis
  • Light Screen
I lucked into a Torterra through wonder trade so I have one to Start breeding. Torterra will be the main lead in most cases. Star by setting up a leech seed, proceed to light screen. Ground is lacking special defense pretty hard so I feel like this is a good choice. I had a more sandy team, but decided against it because I like mold breaker too much on excadrill. Sandstorm also diminishes synthesis. Sdef EVs and calm to bulk him up against grass/ice/most fire users. He is the best special tank staller I can think of.

Excadrill @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Jolly Nature
  • Brick Break
  • Shadow Claw
  • Earthquake
  • Rock Slide
Speedy mole! choice scarf outspeeds a lot of stuff. ESPECIALLY charizard Y. he drops a rock on his head and OHKOs him. Earthquake staple. Brick Break wrecks bisharp/other steels/darks. Shadow claw is so so, but does hurt psychics and ghosts pretty well. Steel typing makes him neutral to ice damage.

Quagsire @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Bold Nature
  • Scald
  • Infestation
  • Recover
  • Protect
Infestation might take longer than toxic to kill, but preventing a switch out is awesome. Also it stacks with Gliscor's toxic and can slowly wittle things away. as you are familiar it also makes switch outs easy to predict. Furthermore, it stacks with scald burns. protect and recover to stall out. It was a hard choice to switch unaware to water absorb, but the ground team needs it more for water protection.

Gliscor @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Relaxed Nature
  • Toxic
  • Roost
  • Facade
  • U-turn
Batscorp! super physically defensive. Should be a great staller, especially with the poison heal set, just gotta watch out for ice attacks. Facade should provide some very powerful neutral damage if needed. I am going to breed him specifically slow. This way he can take a hit, then U-turn into one of the sweepers without the sweeper taking damage.

Garchomp @ Assault Vest
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature
  • Dragon Claw
  • Earthquake
  • Stone Edge
  • Poison Jab
Ditching Mega. The speed reduction seems too much for me. Also without a sand caster regular chomp should be plenty powerful. Assault Vest gives him some additional bulk against special defensive super effective attacks. Dragon Claw and Earthquake Stab. Stone edge for flyers who might try to take advantage of his earth bound friends. Poison Jab for fairy threats.

Rotom-Heat @ Chesto Berry
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SDef
Calm Nature
  • Overheat
  • Volt Switch
  • Will-O-Wisp
  • Rest
Here's the rounder. I felt Rotom - H should counteract all three ground weaknesses - Water/Ice/Grass. He is Specially defensive again. Now we have two physical tanks, 1 special tank and 1 mixed tank in Torterra. The team ended up pretty stall heavy and Rotom is no exception. Overheat should hit grass types hard even with no attack investment. And Volt switch will hit waters hard. Will-o for more stalling/lowering attack. I did a chesto/rest set for a little more staying power.

That's the first draft! let me know your thoughts. Again, it is a lot more defensive than I originally intended, but that tends to be one of my strong suits.
