Overview
########

· Gets literally every move in the game

· Stats are atrocious, speed is usable

· Fairly predictable

Hazard Lead
########
name: Hazard Lead
move 1: Dark Void / Spore
move 2: Stealth Rock
move 3: Sticky Web / Spikes
move 4: Explosion / Magic Coat
ability: Own Tempo
item: Focus Sash
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
nature: Jolly

Moves
========

· Dark Void - Necessary to get free turns to set up hazards. Dark Void is preferred due to the ability to hit grass-types and Forry

· Spore - 100% accurate sleep move, but grass-types and Overcoat Forry are immune so Dark Void is usually a better option

· Stealth Rock - Most important hazard, a priority to get up early game

· Sticky Web - Allows Smeargle to support the team by lowering the speed of any grounded mon on the opponents side, useful for bulky offense

· Spikes - Stacks up additional damage on grounded switchins, on top of SR, better for HO

· Explosion - Prevents spinning

· Magic Coat - Stops faster taunt mons, prevents status

Set Details
========

· Speed is really the only important stat

· HP investment lets Smeargle survive some hits from weaker mons

· Focus Sash guarantees getting off a move

Usage Tips
========

· Always used as a lead unless opponent has a specific counter

· Important to recognize when opponent has a mon that can shut Smeargle down

· Recognize what is important to set first in terms of hazards (e.g. if SW will screw over a team, it might be better to set it first)

Team Options
========

· Offensive mons that can take advantage of hazards by forcing switches or getting more KOs (Darm, Hera; Yanmega, Sharpedo)

· Spin blocker to keep hazards on the field

· Defiant mons and others that can punish defoggers

Baton Pass
########
name: Baton Pass
move 1: Dark Void / Spore
move 2: Quiver Dance / Shell Smash / Shift Gear
move 3: Baton Pass
move 4: Substitute
ability: Own Temp
item: Focus Sash
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
nature: Timid

Moves
========

· Spore - Used to generate free turns. Spore is a bit more viable on this set because you only need one free turn to boost, so you can do that on the grass/forry switch

· Dark Void - Less accurate than spore, hits grass types and forry

· Quiver Dance / Shell Smash / Shift Gear - Boosting move, going to be chosen based on team. Shell Smash is the most immediate but lowers stats

· Baton Pass - Self explanatory

· Substitute - Blocks status, passing a sub allows whatever you're passing to to take the hit

Set Details
========

· Speed and HP/bulk are maximized because they're the only thing that really matter

· Focus sash guarantees a spore/dark void at full health

Usage Tips
========

· Important to recognize when opponent has a mon that can stop/phaze Smeargle

· Make a plan that can maximize Smeargle's effectiveness based on the opponent's team

Team Options
========

· Stuff that likes to receive boosts (Nidos, Mega-Blastoise for Smash/Quiver; Heracross, Metagross for Shift Gear)

· Usually want stuff with better coverage that won't be forced out

· Baton Pass chains

Other Options
########

· Nuzzle on hazard set to cripple fast taunters/defoggers

· Whirlwind on the hazard set to phaze mons that try to set up

· Geomancy can be used on BP set with Power Herb to pass a bigger boost after one turn, but it is more difficult to use as it forgoes sash

Checks & Counters
########

· Grass types if running spore for hazard

· Forry if running spore for hazard

· Phazers for BP

· Faster Taunt users/Magic Bounce for both sets (Mega Aero, Crobat, Azelf, etc.)

Overview
########

Despite having the lowest base stat total of any Pokemon commonly seen in UU, Smeargle plays a pivotal role on many teams. With access to every move in the game, Smeargle has access to Dark Void, Sticky Web, Shell Smash, and other coveted moves that allow it to overcome its very obvious faults. Smeargle's base 75 Speed allows it to outspeed most defensive Pokemon, and access to sleep-inducing moves allows it to generate free turns for itself.

Despite having access to every move, however, Smeargle is fairly predictable and doesn’t have much versatility. Its pitiful stats outside of Speed relegate it to a few support roles that it can perform effectively. When Smeargle is shown in Team Preview, it's fairly obvious what it's going to do. Fortunately for Smeargle, it performs these support roles very well and is capable of shifting the outcome of matches on its own.

Hazard Lead
########
name: Hazard Lead
move 1: Dark Void / Spore
move 2: Stealth Rock
move 3: Sticky Web / Spikes
move 4: Explosion / Magic Coat
ability: Own Tempo
item: Focus Sash
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
nature: Jolly

Moves
========

With access to every entry hazard, a hazard set is a natural fit for Smeargle. Dark Void is used to put the opposing Pokemon to sleep, allowing Smeargle free turns to set up its entry hazards. Spore can be used over Dark Void, but it leaves Smeargle unable to do anything to opposing Forretress, which can spin away hazard with impunity. The ability to hit Forretress and Grass-type Pokemon is generally worth the accuracy drop. Stealth Rock is the most prominent hazard, due to its ability to hit nearly everything and deal a nice chunk of damage damage to Pokemon that are weak to Rock. The choice between Sticky Web and Spikes is dependent on the team archetype. Faster hyper-offensive teams generally prefer the support of Spikes to ensure more OHKOs, while bulkier offensive teams prefer Sticky Web to be able to outspeed the opponent's Pokemon. The last slot depends on what is more important: blocking spinners, or faster Taunt leads. Explosion allows Smeargle prevent Pokemon that it outspeeds from using Rapid Spin, while Magic Coat allows Smeargle to turn the tables on the opposing Pokemon that try to Taunt it.

Set Details
========

As Smeargle's primary role is to put something to sleep and set up entry hazards, Speed is the most important stat. Maxing out Speed allows Smeargle to outspeed most defensive Pokemon, which can earn it more free turns over the course of the match. Focus Sash guarantees that it can get off a move, even if the opposing Pokemon is faster and capable of OHKOing. The rest is invested in bulk, allowing Smeargle to take some weaker hits.

Usage Tips
========

Smeargle should almost always be used as a lead. The only time Smeargle should not be leading is when there's an opposing Pokemon that can shut Smeargle down. In that case, use the fact that the opponent is forced to lead with that Pokemon to your advantage and generate momentum for your team from the first turn.

Team Options
========

Due to Smeargle's suicide lead nature, it finds itself fitting best on offensive teams that can make use of the entry hazards it sets. Good partners include Pokemon that commonly force switches such as Darmanitan, Mienshao, and Hydreigon. Offensive nukes and cleaners such as Yanmega and Sharpedo also appreciate the entry hazard support to secure more KOs. Offensive Pokemon with subpar Speed, such as Honchkrow, Hydreigon, Nidoking, are able to make great use of the Sticky Web support Smeargle can provide. Ghost-type Pokemon such as Trevenant and Chandelure make good partners for Smeargle as they can block opposing teams from spinning the entry hazards away. Pokemon that can punish Defog users such as Defiant Tornadus also work well.

Baton Pass
########
name: Baton Pass
move 1: Dark Void / Spore
move 2: Quiver Dance / Shell Smash / Shift Gear
move 3: Baton Pass
move 4: Substitute
ability: Own Temp
item: Focus Sash
evs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
nature: Timid

Moves
========

Access to every boosting move means Smeargle is capable of running a very good Baton Pass set. Dark Void is mandatory, giving Smeargle a free turn to use its boosting move as well as putting an opposing Pokemon to sleep. Spore can also be used, although Dark Void is generally preferred due to its ability to hit Grass-types and Pokemon with Overcoat. The boosting move depends on what Pokemon will be the recipient. Shell Smash provides a more immediate offensive boost, though the defensive drops means it is harder for the recipient to come in safely. Quiver Dance can be passed to any special attacker, while Shift Gear is for slower physical attackers. Baton Pass is obviously used to pass these boosts along. Substitute can be used to block status moves, as well as be passed to the recipient to ensure that it can come in safely.

Set Details
========

Maxing out Speed allows Smeargle to outspeed many defensive Pokemon and put them to sleep before they can damage it. The rest is invested in to HP to allow Smeargle to create bigger Substitutes and take weaker hits.

Usage Tips
========

As opposed to the hazard set, this Smeargle doesn't necessarily have to be used as a lead. The boosts it can pass can be a possible win condition, so it is very important to use it when the boosts are guaranteed to be passed. As long as any phazer is still alive on the opponent's team, Smeargle should be kept on the sidelines.

Team Options
========

While any offensive Pokemon will appreciate receiving boosts, the one-time-use nature of this set limits what should be used. Smeargle should be passing to Pokemon that can't be forced out easily. This means the receiver should have good coverage or have good bulk. Examples include Nidoqueen, Nidoking, Hydreigon, Mega Blastoise, and Metagross. Smeargle can also be used on Baton Pass chains due to it having access to many moves that can benefit the chain. A Defogger or spinner is helpful, letting Smeargle keep its Focus Sash intact if it comes in later in the match.

Other Options
########

Despite having access to every move, Smeargle doesn't have many other options. On the hazard set, there's a few more moves that can be used in the last slot. Nuzzle can be used to cripple faster Taunt and Defog users, while Whirlwind can be used to prevent opposing Pokemon from setting up and rack up entry hazard damage. On the Baton Pass set, Geomancy can be used with Power Herb to prevent the wait turn. However, giving up Focus Sash means any fast offensive Pokemon can deal with Smeargle, greatly limiting the number of opportunities it has to set up.

Checks & Counters
########

One of the best ways to shut down Smeargle is a faster Pokemon that uses Taunt. Though they must be wary of Magic Coat and Nuzzle, Pokemon such as Azelf, Crobat, and Mega Aerodactyl are capable of preventing Smeargle from doing anything. Magic Bounce users such as Xatu and Mega Absol perform similarly. If Smeargle is running Spore over Dark Void, Grass-types and Overcoat users such as Forretress won't have to worry about being put to sleep, but must still deal with the entry hazards or boosts that Smeargle can set up. For the Baton Pass set, any Pokemon capable of phazing can nullify any of the boosts Smeargle passes.

i'd mention whirlwind as an option for the fourth slot on the hazards set; it prevents opposing set-up and can accrue chip damage from hazards in earlier stages of the game (including the ability to catch spinners coming in on it directly), making it a pretty solid option on spikes variants. it was better w/gen 5 sleep mechanics, but still plenty solid imo.

also, it's 'stealth rock' q-q

yeah, I'll probably be putting whirlwind along with nuzzle in oo for the hazard set, thanks

nice catch .-.

-Change Parting Shot to Whirlwind to stop Sub mons trying to rain on Smeargle's parade
-Change 'usually used as lead' to always used as lead UNLESS a specific counter is on the other team
- Then for usage mention prioritizing what Smeargle should do, if weakness to SW set that up, if nothing to block spore do that first etc etc
- Slash Dark Void first on both sets since there's no way to stop it unless Insomnia or whatever but Spore has more counters
- Add in team options, mons that can punish Defog or result in sacrifices in order to get off defog so more HO teams benefit from this
- Just beef up a few things here and there, possibly add the mons that best receive boosts and mention mons with taunt that specifically counter e.g Azelf. Mega Aero, Froslass, Crobat

Once they've all been completed i'll come back and take a look and hopefully can QC 1/3, Good luck!

Whirlwind isn't viable. If you're worried about Substitute or them setting up, that's what Explosion is for. If you really want, you can briefly mention it in the set, but don't slash it in.

A geomancer set should be added, as I've seen quite a few of them recently.

I myself would prefer to run Whirlwind seeing as some sub users take minimal or no damage from Explosion e.g Cresselia, Chandelure, Trevenant, CM Jirachi but to each their own i suppose. Also if you're running Explosion as main slash, change the nature from Timid to Jolly so it can at least do some damage.

Implement that and you should be ready to start writing it up. QC 2/3
