Moves
========
Substitute allows Suicune to avoid status, especially burn and poison, which are massively crippling to it because it lacks reliable recovery. Substitute also makes Suicune a lot safer against critical hits, making it a good option alongside Calm Mind to set up on non-Thunderbolt Clefable easily. Substitute can also scout out the opponent's reaction to Suicune and scout out the initial switch-in. Calm Mind boosts Suicune's special bulk, which makes it more difficult for threats such as non-Psyshock Latios and Amoonguss to beat Suicune. Scald has a nifty chance to burn threats, especially Grass-types such as Tangrowth, Ferrothorn, and Amoonguss, as it can help wear them down quickly. Protect allows Suicune to gain additional turns of recovery from Leftovers, PP stall low-PP moves such as Leaf Storm and Power Whip, and scout moves from Choice item users such as Landorus-T and Keldeo.
Set Details
========
216 Speed EVs along with a Timid nature allow Suicune to outspeed everything up to maximum Speed base 80 Pokemon, including Heatran. 252 HP EVs give Suicune 404 HP, which means that its Substitutes will have 101 HP and therefore will never be broken by a single Seismic Toss. The remaining EVs are placed into Special Defense in order to give Suicune's Substitute the highest chance to survive Rotom-W's Volt Switch at +1, which is roughly a 62.5% chance. The Special Defense investment also ensures Amoonguss will never be able to break the Substitute with a single Giga Drain when Suicune is at +1. Pressure is Suicune's only ability but is important to PP stall more effectively. Leftovers is mandatory, as Suicune has no recovery options that fit well on this set.
Usage Tips
========
This Suicune set needs to be played more conservatively as opposed to sets with Rest, as it has much less bulk and can't switch into threats it otherwise would be able to, with Weavile being an example of one. This also includes avoiding Suicune being hit by status moves, especially Scald, Lava Plume, Toxic, and Thunder Wave, as status is extremely crippling for it. Because this set relies on Leftovers to maintain HP, avoid Suicune taking Knock Off at all costs. Suicune can find setup opportunities on the likes of Heatran and Clefable, as it uses Substitute to avoid status moves from them, while Substitute in tandem with Protect can be used to PP stall Ferrothorn's Power Whip. Avoid trying to set up with Suicune when its answers, especially Electric-types, are still around and healthy. Protect should also be used when Suicune needs the additional HP to survive an attack or to scout Choice item users, but the opponent can take advantage of this and set up entry hazards or use a boosting move.
Team Options
========
Pursuit support from Pokemon like Tyranitar and Weavile benefits Suicune well, as they can remove annoying Pokemon such as Latios; additionally, Tyranitar can take on Electric-types and Weavile can take on Grass-types. Beware that Tyranitar also sets up sand, which hurts Suicune's recovery. Answers to Grass-types such as Mega Venusaur, Tangrowth, and Serperior are appreciated. Heatran and Tornadus-T can check them fairly well while also taking on the likes of Ferrothorn, as Suicune can find itself being pressured by it very often. Clefable appreciates Suicune setting up and punishing Heatran and Amoonguss and, in return, can check Electric-types and makes for a passable Weavile switch-in. Clefable can also spread paralysis with Thunder Wave, crippling the likes of Latios and making it easier for Suicune to set up against it. Ground-types such as Landorus-T and Garchomp with Choice Scarf or Yache Berry can take on Electric-types and, in the case of Yache Berry variants, can also set up Stealth Rock, which makes it easier for Suicune to threaten teams, as they can't try to freely switch between a Pokemon immune to Scald and one not immune. Since Suicune can't check common Dark-types in Bisharp and Weavile anymore, checks to them such as Mega Lopunny, Terrakion, and Mega Scizor will be needed. Suicune also appreciates entry hazard stacking, which puts further pressure on builds that struggle to handle it and also wears down Grass- and Electric-types; Ferrothorn works nicely, as Suicune can handle Heatran, while Skarmory helps check Pokemon that Suicune now struggles to check, such as Mega Lopunny and Excadrill.
