Sun & Moon UU Speculation and Discussion Thread - Updated with UU Alpha!

The downside I see to moves like Z-Mirror Move is that in addition to a set-up turn, they end up costing you your item, too. Running Choice Band on Staraptor gives the equivalent of a +1 boost without requiring a setup turn, so going up to a +2 boost once per game at the cost of an item and a turn doesn't feel as significant - especially in Staraptor's case, where you rarely end up clicking anything other than Brave Bird. I'd be interested to see if anyone has good success with them, but mostly I'm skeptical.

Anyhow, I'd seen Aquadext hyping Flyinium-Z Salamence, but I decided to finally give it a shot myself. Built a quick dragspam team yesterday and...

...OK, yeah, the hype is real. In addition to the insanely strong Flying attack, this thing also benefits from the fact that Z-Crystals can't be knocked off, giving you setup opportunities against things like Krookodile that otherwise can't touch you. Here are a couple of replays from a tour this morning:

http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7pokebankou-490108093
http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7pokebankou-490109403

They aren't the best replays in the world, but in both instances the Z-Crystal definitely played a role (in the first, by easily OHKOing Decidueye, though I'm not sure what it would have done to me in return, and in the second by allowing me to set up on Krookodile without fear of Knock Off). I've done other test games in general, though, and it is pretty consistently good. Just don't set up until Mimikyu is busted, and watch out for things like Slowbro. The power of STAB Supersonic Skystrike is enough to break through any Fairies not named Diancie, so it doesn't need to rely on Iron Tail to beat them. More, it gives it a strong attack (stronger than Outrage) to get the damage train rolling, so you can use Dragon Claw as your main attack and stick to Supersonic Skystrike to break through bulkier Pokemon such as Suicune and Hippo.

EDIT: And one more for fun, since this one shows off the Z-Move's power a bit better: http://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen7pokebankou-490142874
another salamence sweep :D

This is the team I'm currently using in AS and want to update it for SM.

Crobat (M) @ Black Sludge
Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Brave Bird
- Toxic
- Roost
- Taunt

Crobat is one of my all-time favorite Pokemon and my stallbreaker. The idea of Taunt/Toxic/Infiltrator is a great combination imo. Being able to stop long stalls, poison walls, and ignore substitutes with Brave Bird are all fantastic. And when you take too much recoil damage, roost is always there.

Sharpedo (M) @ Sharpedonite
Ability: Speed Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Protect
- Crunch
- Waterfall
- Ice Fang

Step one of my Sweeper Team. Protect is there to get in at least one Speed Boost before you mega-evolve. Crunch and Waterfall are his main two STAB moves and I love using Ice Fang for coverage against Dragon and Grass types that think they can switch in and handle him. I might consider using Psychic Fangs instead but I'm not sure if the coverage is needed compared to Ice Fang. Conkeldurr and Lucario definitely give my team trouble, especially the main man Snorlax.

Arcanine @ Life Orb
Ability: Intimidate
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Wild Charge
- Flare Blitz
- Extreme Speed
- Morning Sun

Entei was my go-to Fire Pokemon for AS but I think I can make an easy replacement with Arcanine. Flare Blitz is the obvious go-to STAB move and Wild Charge is another fantastic coverage for Water types that try to switch in against him. Extremespeed gives you that Priority for revenge killing and Morning Sun is there to help you manage all the damage you'll be taking from Life Orb/recoil damage.

Cloyster (F) @ Focus Sash
Ability: Skill Link
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Shell Smash
- Icicle Spear
- Rock Blast
- Hydro Pump

Cloyster is my all-time favorite competitive Pokemon and Skill Link is definitely the reason why. I considered switching to Minior but I'm not sure if he's going to be considered UU. Shell Smash is the same for both Pokemon but I like the idea of Skill Link letting you break Substitutes and also Mimikyu with Icicle Spear and Rock Blast.

Snorlax (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Thick Fat
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Curse
- Return
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Snorlax is pretty straightforward and steals end games all by his lonesome as long as there aren't any pesky ghost types lingering around. Curse gives him the boost and Return gives him all the kill power. Combined with Rest and Sleep Talk in addition to his monster Def/Sp Def, Snorlax isn't going anywhere soon and if he does go, he took quite a few Pokemon with him swinging.

Swampert @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 240 HP / 16 Atk / 252 Def
Relaxed Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Scald
- Roar

Missing Swampert/Empoleon is really where I need help. I have no idea who to use as this kind of Pokemon and the main reason for this post. I love the idea of opening with Swampert and Stealth Rock. He's super bulky and will take hits and his Scald/Earthquake hit like a truck too. Roar is also great to stop people from setting up and getting those hits with Stealth Rock. I've switched between him and Empoleon with Stealth Rock/Scald/Roar/Ice Beam again and again and I think I like Swampert more because of the Electric immunity. But who should I replace him with in SM?

Losing Empoleon is really heartbreaking and want a nice bulky Stealth Rock lead still. I would like to use some of the new Sun and Moon Pokemon but am too attached to my old mons. I really want to keep Cloyster, Mega Sharpedo, and Snorlax as potential sweepers. Looking to help fill the holes and thought about replacing Arcanine with Salazzle and Empoleon with Necrozma but not sure about them at all.

I also struggle with Fighting Types like Conkeldurr and Lucario that absolutely devastate Cloyster/Sharpedo/Snorlax and think I need to replace one for something that checks fighting types besides just Crobat.

I hopped on board during gen 4. Each generation since then, OU has become slightly more cutthroat and powerful, to the point that UU is starting to look more like the OU I remember than OU is. I guess in the end I'll go wherever balanced teams are most rewarded, and stall doesn't show up too much.

EDIT: Oh yeah, last gen gardevoir was banned instead of gardevoirite. Is that likely to be the case this time around too? I remember something about "What if the mega is worse than the regular?" though after people suggesting to ban king's shield instead of aegislash, I can't imagine it to be too complicated to just take it on a case by case measure as to whether the pokemon or the mega stone should be banned.

That's 30 Pokemon competing for ~11 spots in OU.
Sorry, but what exactly do you mean by "competing for spots" ? Does OU have a limit or something?

He's trying to say there's not enough room in the meta for all those pokemon to gain the usage that is required to be an official part of the OU tier. For example, Raikou, Tapu Koko, Alolan Raichu, Zapdos, Thundurus-T, and some others have to compete as electric types. Not all of them will make the cutoff (this might be a bad example I don't play OU, just trying to explain the logic.)

So usage is up for the first month.

Stuff that was OU on the initial list that is now looking like UU by usage: Gliscor, Dragonite, Zard-Y, Azumarill (!), Keldeo, Weavile, Zygarde-10%, Kyurem-Black, Volcarona, Breloom, Diggersby, Scolipede, Serperior
EDIT: Volcanion, Thundurus, Tornadus-T (RIP UU)

Stuff that was looking like UU but has now moved up: Mimikyu, Nihilego, Hippowdon, Mandibuzz (aegi tho), Zapdos

based on the statistics of usage equaling 1/20 ladder matches being equivalent to approx 3.4%, there can only be so many mons that are used within that framework before the remainder drop to OU. AKA we're getting a bunch of new shit.

  • In Underlined will be mons that are from Gen 7 and available for UU Alpha, including Alola Forms
  • In Italics are mons that were BL but for now are part of our Alpha
  • Unedited mons are Pokemon that were once UU and are now back to join us for Alpha

This means the following Pokemon are banned for UU Alpha. Please take note of the following:
  1. Pokemon that were OU/Ubers in ORAS will be unedited
  2. New Pokemon that were in lower tier in ORAS and are now OU will be Bolded
  3. New Pokemon will be Italicized.
  4. This list is ordered by usage, which means stuff like Hippowdon/Tyranitar might join us. By the same logic, we might lose a lot of our new toys as well. Use them while you can!

is this list primarily for our individual speculation or does this mean an official showdown ladder is coming up sooner? (sorry if I'm asking the same question again but i cant wait!!!!!!!!!!!)

yo I didn't even notice Mega-Bro hot damn that's fire.
Mega-chomp is irrelevant technically unless we get Garchomp (as if)

Just realizing that Thundurus/Keldeo/Charizard-Y(EDIT: and weavile) is a UU core now
Could also build a really nice BW OU team with Keldeo/Kube/Volcarona/Starmie/Gengar/Tornadus-T

We're currently looking into the logistics of an actual ladder for you folks, so stay tuned.
Is it worth having a legitimate discussion of these mons? I mean Charizard Y?! Do we have a predictive banlist?

Keep in mind that Alpha UU will likely look nothing like this in a few months. This bizarre power creep happens every generation. For example, last gen we had Deoxys Speed, Landorus I, Keldeo and others. It'll all balance out in time but meanwhile it's fun to mess around with all the OP dudes.

Hey so pretty much what Yabo said, the UU council will be very active after beta is released, isolating broken threats to slowly assemble our BL. We don't want to be too aggressive with our banning policy yet, because every generation observes a power creep. It's very possible that the tier will no longer revolve around Pokemon such as Suicune, and shift to other diverse Pokemon such as Breloom or Keldeo. While this it is not 100% certain that these changes will be made, it's important to keep an open mind and to trust the council during this process; the decisions we make will help the UU beta (this is currently our alpha phase) process be short and sweet so that we can move on and have a legitimate tier as soon as logistically possible.

So basically, some more updates:
1. We're getting a ladder set up now. It might take a few hours to a few days to fully set up. Check showdown often and remain patient while the Showdown staff do everything they can to get our ladder up and running.
2. As a whole, it is unlikely that we will be tiering before beta. If anything is too absurd we will take a look at it but for now everything remains as is. Yes, this includes Charizard-Y and Drought.
3. Hogg and I are working on a prospective beta ban list for the UU tour currently in progress. As per his post, the changes will only take place beginning in round 3. We will update you as soon as we have prospective ban list in place. It is currently unknown whether the tour ban list will transfer over to the tier as a whole, however this seems unlikely.

As developments arise, we will communicate with you. Thanks for your patience, and I hope you guys have a ton of fun! Gen 7 UU here we come! If you have more questions don't be shy; it's understandable that things might seem to be ambiguous right now, and we're here to help.

Actually, right now being in alpha we aren't going to do much tiering for the alpha phase. It's not even "officially unofficial" at this point so it's more for fun and observing how things are. It's only using the first month of OU stats, things are going to get radically different very quickly so there really isn't a point in doing quick bans just yet. Once we get beta up and running the system is going to be run pretty similar to how it was for XY.

Anybody think Gigalith, A-Ninetales or Torkoal can make a splash? While ZardY is an option, Torkoal can set rocks, spin and set up hazards. Gigalith gets the SDef boost (unlike hippo) and A-Ninetales has NP sets to hit hard.

I can see Hail being terrifying. Normally, we have just Mega Abomasnow to set hail, which often limits the usefulness of it, though it can be amazing against stall. Now, having Ninetails and the new ability Slush Rush, it has a chance to shine especially against slower teams. Beartic, a mon that is PU material for the most part sans very niche roles, now has the chance to obliterate offense, while SD Abomasnow and NP Ninetails can rain hail (geddit?) on stall due to the lack of Leftovers recovery. Don't even get me started on Kyurem-Black and Weavile, two of the more dangerous offensive threats to drop (in my opinion) just by sheer power on one's side and Weavile just being a pain in the ass overall.

Sun might have some presence, but I don't see how if Drought's banned. Maybe manual setters? Somebody tell me how that one'll work afterwards.

Sand also might be dangerous, but it'll probably just be used for a final cleaner or whatever. I didn't see too much in the way of sand that stuck out too me, and almost nothing that greatly benefits from it being up. Again, if somebody wants to call me on it, go ahead, it's late at night for me.

I'd say something about rain but just I feel like I'm rambling so I'll probably make another post when I gather my thoughts better. Mostly wanted to talk about hail anyways.

EDIT:
[00:37] @CoolStoryBrobat:You missed the part where Abomasite is unreleased as of yet in Gen 7

Uh. Yeah. We don't have Aboma to abuse. Yet.

Damn, Zard Y is going to be a hell of a lot of fun to abuse. I just wish Ttar dropped too, and then I could just beat every stall team with band tar and zard haha. Mega Aerodactyl checks a lot of the broken shit, so I'll use it if I'm not running Zard. Thundurus dropping is hilarious, I'm excited to see how powerful it is. I'm so glad Volcarona is back, I had so much fun using it in xy, and although it will still probably be completely broken, I'm excited to tear apart entire teams with it. I'm really hyped to try out the alpha when the ladder is up.

Also, 100th post hype.
