Project SV OU - The Next Best Thing (The Indigo Disk Edition) Round 12: Iron Valiant

Bulky pivot Ogerpon-Wellspring

Ogerpon-Wellspring (F) @ Wellspring Mask
Ability: Water Absorb
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- U-turn
- Leech Seed
- Horn Leech
- Ivy Cudgel

This is a defensivish attempt with a pokemon that is usually used offensively. The addition of U-turn (to keep the momentum) and Leech Seed (to put pressure on supposed checks&counters, as well as a safe move if you predict a switch-out) allows to keep pressure on your opponent's threats while dishing out some damage with your two STABs.
Ivy Cudgel is the strong Water STAB move, whereas Horn Leech makes more sense here than Wood Hammer because it allows to have more hp recovery, which is a good thing to have on a defensively-inclined set.

The EVs spread is a basic fast&bulky one.

Why this set can be good?
Because it make good use of Ogerpon-W's bulk and boost when it uses the Tera. Also, Leech Seed is really underrated as supporting move because it can be staked with other status moves (i.e. burn, poison) and a little hp recharge is always appreciated to avoid OHKO/2HKOs.

Sunny Day Ogerpon-Wellspring
Ogerpon-Wellspring (F) @ Wellspring Mask
Ability: Water Absorb
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Sunny Day
- Synthesis
- Solar Blade
- Ivy Cudgel/Play Rough/Stomping Tantrum/Low Kick/Swords Dance
"Heatranator, you have lost your mind, how tf would waterpon benefit from sun". Firstly, rude to say I've lost my mind. Secondly, the combo of solar blade and synthesis radically changes waterpon's gameplan.
Instead of abusing water based moves, now waterpon can abuse grass type moves. With sunny day up, synthesis recovers 75% health meaning that waterpon can actually be tankier than it seems, and you can abuse solar blade's instant charge to get a 125 grass move which is slightly more powerful than power whip.
The last moveslot if quite customisable. Ivy cudgel gives good stab, though you have to be cautious about sun weakening it. Play rough can hurt opposing dragon types that might stop your grass sweeps. Stomping tantrum can help against steel types that also switch into solar blade. Low kick brutalises gambit because why not. Finally, swords dance can make sure that sweeps are easier to attain by boosting up the power of solar blade.
Some calcs:
252 Atk Wellspring Mask Ogerpon-Wellspring Solar Blade vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gholdengo: 121-143 (38.4 - 45.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 Atk Wellspring Mask Ogerpon-Wellspring Solar Blade vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Kyurem: 126-149 (32.2 - 38.1%) -- 96.7% chance to 3HKO
252 Atk Wellspring Mask Ogerpon-Wellspring Solar Blade vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Roaring Moon: 153-180 (43.5 - 51.2%) -- 8.2% chance to 2HKO
252 Atk Wellspring Mask Ogerpon-Wellspring Solar Blade vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Kingambit: 99-117 (29 - 34.3%) -- 3% chance to 3HKO
252 Atk Wellspring Mask Ogerpon-Wellspring Solar Blade vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Enamorus: 155-183 (53.6 - 63.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Substitute Leech Seed Waterpon
Ogerpon-Wellspring (F) @ Wellspring Mask
Ability: Water Absorb
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Ivy Cudgel
- Substitute
- Leech Seed
- Knock Off

You may be wondering how I managed to create a waterpon set that manages to not have either of swords dance or u-turn. The idea around this set is basically that sub leech lets you beat some mons that normally check waterpon, like Raging Bolt or Kyurem. Of course, these do also lose to sd play rough, but against raging bolt, you do have to play around thunderclap if you're chipped. Sub leech also beats stuff like tera skarmory, since you can just leech and spam sub and click knock when you have free turns since they are forced to roost pretty often from leech. Knock off is chosen as the secondary attack because this waterpon doesn't exactly have the strongest breaking power, and knock pretty much guarantees value, and also hits dragapult trying to switch in and wisp you. This set is strongest against balance, since you get free subs up against gliscor and immediately become a huge threat, since nothing really wants to switch in and still have to break the sub, letting you get off more free damage. For knock to have the most value, this should be paired with spikes, so that if for example you knock off a zamazenta, it will lose more easily on the next switchin.

(see my RMT with this set)

I built this team around Ogerpon-W given the success and eventual ban of Ogerpon-Hearthflame. While I do not find Ogerpon-W in the same tier, it has its qualities, namely as one of the better checks to Manaphy in the meta. It has an unorthodox set that I need to explain. I originally had Trailblaze in here because of its success on Hearthflame, but Wellspring plays differently. Swords Dance and Ivy Cudgel are there to break slower opponents. Horn Leech is over Trailblaze and Power Whip to maintain HP over the match, particularly against stall. U-turn is situational, but works well with getting in slower threats and chipping Rillaboom early game. It is also the move of choice against Amoonguss, Hoopa-Unbound, and Dragonite. Be selective when using Tera on Ogerpon-W, especially if Rillaboom is still alive.

Mixed AoA with Superpower

Enamorus @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Contrary
EVs: 12 Atk / 244 SpA / 252 Spe
Tera Type: Stellar
Naive Nature
- Moonblast
- Earth Power
- Tera Blast / Weather Ball
- Superpower

General idea

Here we have an AoA Enamorus because it has good mixed offenses and Superpower to make good use of Contrary alongside Superpower, which here is mandatory both offensively and defensively.
Moonblast is the STAB, picked over its peculiar move Springtide Storm due to accuracy issues. Earth Power is here for coverage.
Tera Blast is here to have another special move neutral coverage, but IF you have weather support (especially Sun, Rain or Snow) Weather Ball is really incredible to have a Water move or a Fire move stronger than Mystical Fire.

Tera type Stellar because it allows Enamorus to make good use of Contrary.

EVs (spread) and item
12 Atk EVs are picked in order to achieve this feature:
12 Atk Enamorus Superpower vs. 212 HP / 0 Def Kingambit: 340-400 (86.2 - 101.5%) -- 50% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock while you resist Sucker Punch
The remaing EVs are divided into Spe and SpA, with 252 EVs into Spe with a +Spe nature in order to speed tie with Iron Threads.
Sitrus Berry is here in order to avoid some 2HKOs and because it is very useful when paired with a Def-boosting move such as Superpower with Contrary. This way you can wish to emergency check something. In my opinion, Leftovers here is a little too slow most of the time.
Naive nature is picked in order to keep the already-middling Def to acceptable levels, while boosting the Spe stat.

Team(mates) support
Hazards control is really appreciated as well as weather support.

Choice Band Enamorus
Enamorus @ Choice Band
Ability: Contrary
Tera Type: Ground / Stellar / Fairy
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Play Rough
- Superpower
- Zen Headbutt / Tera Blast
- Iron Head / Tera Blast / Outrage / Fly

Enamorus has great physical options :3
Play Rough + Superpower + Tera Blast Ground offers great coverage, but you can choose Zen Headbutt if you prefer.
The last slot is flexible, although Iron Head and Tera Blast are more helpful.
Tera Ground for Tera Blast, Tera Stellar for a STAB on every move + Tera Blast, Tera Fairy to boost Play Rough (OHKOing offensive Great Tusk!).

Power Herb Fly Enamorus
Enamorus @ Power Herb
Ability: Contrary
Tera Type: Fighting
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Superpower
- Zen Headbutt/Iron Head
- Play Rough
- Fly
The thing with the genies is that they don't have many flying stab moves to abuse (with tornadus being the exception of course), and this set tries to rectify that issue a bit.
Most of the set is standard, superpower to boost enam's attack and defense stat so it can start snowballing, zen headbutt to deal with pesky poison types that can wall the superpower + stab combo or iron head which can deal great damage to opposing fairy types, and play rough that is just a good stab move. This set, while great, can sometimes wish it had flying stab to hit waterpon, rillaboom, serperior and volcarona harder. That's where power herb fly comes in. As the only flying attacking move in enam's arsenal, it is the default option. Usually, the two turns can be abused by the opponent to switch to a resist, but in this case, it can be used immediately once to hit that target very hard. This can mean that enam can break through the opponent easier by removing the one mon that may stand in its way.
