Swampert-Mega (Revamp) (GP 2/2)

[OVERVIEW]

Mega Swampert is a very niche rain attacker. It's the only viable physical Swift Swim attacker, as well as the only one that can reliably beat Thundurus, Sylveon, and, depending on its coverage, Ferrothorn. Its immunity to paralysis due to its Ground typing means its Speed cannot be crippled like the others'. Also, as a rain sweeper with good natural bulk, it is less weak to priority moves than other rain sweepers, notably Talonflame's Brave Bird and Mega Kangaskhan's Sucker Punch. However, being a physical attacker, Swampert is hindered by Intimidate and burns, and it is extremely weak to Grass-types, more so than other rain staples. Unlike other Swift Swimmers, it needs to Mega Evolve before it gains Swift Swim, usually giving your opponent a free turn. Finally, its secondary STAB move Earthquake is significantly weaker due to its spread reduction, and it also hits Mega Swampert's partner.

[SET]
name: Swift Swim Attacker
move 1: Waterfall
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Ice Punch / Superpower
move 4: Protect
item: Swampertite
ability: Damp
nature: Adamant
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Waterfall is almost always Mega Swampert's best attack, as it is a reliable and strong physical attack that is boosted by rain. Earthquake is its strongest Ground-type STAB move and also gives Mega Swampert a spread option while providing super effective coverage against Volcanion and Steel-types such as Aegislash. For Mega Swampert's third move, Ice Punch hits Grass- and Dragon-types like Amoonguss and Latios for good damage, which Mega Swampert's STAB moves can't, while Superpower provides solid coverage versus Mega Kangaskhan, Kyurem-B, and Ferrothorn. Protect is necessary because Swampert must safely Mega Evolve before it gains Swift Swim. It also either allows Swampert to stay safe from a threat for a turn while its partner deals with said threat or allows you to safely scout for a threat.

Set Details
========

Running 252 Attack EVs with an Adamant nature allows Mega Swampert to hit as hard as possible, while 252 Speed EVs let it outspeed all relevant threats while under rain, including Jolly Choice Scarf Landorus-T, Choice Scarf Genesect, and Deoxys-A. For pre-Mega abilities, Damp is superior to Torrent, as you won't ever use Torrent due to Swampert needing to Mega Evolve as soon as possible. Damp can also let Swampert prevent an Explosion while switching in on occasion.

Usage Tips
========

Swampert is only good once it has Mega Evolved and is in rain, because otherwise its damage output is relatively low and its Speed is pretty poor. Because of this, try to maximize its time in rain by bringing it into the drizzle as early possible. When Mega Evolving Swampert, make smart use of Protect so that it can gain the Swift Swim Speed boost without consequences. Mega Swampert is best used as a mid- to late-game sweeper, as it can easily clean up once its threats, such as Grass-types and Water-types, are removed. You can also remove said threats while Swampert is on the field by having another Pokemon that can remove them, like Kyurem-B, Latios, or Talonflame, do so before they threaten Swampert.

Team Options
========

First and foremost, you almost always need Politoed, as Drizzle automatically sets rain so that you don't need to waste a turn doing so. You should also have some answers to Grass-types, such as Kyurem-B and Talonflame, as they will almost always beat Mega Swampert. Swampert is really weak to sun due to it being OHKOed by common sun Pokemon, like Mega Charizard Y with Solar Beam and Venusaur, so bring a few good sun checks, such as Thundurus and Talonflame. If you aren't running Superpower, strong Fighting-types like Terrakion and Conkeldurr are also good to have in order to beat Ferrothorn and Kyurem-B, which are huge threats to rain. Finally, Ground-immune Pokemon like Latios and Talonflame should be on the team so that you can attack with them while Swampert uses Earthquake.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

You can run various Speed EVs other than 252 to have some EVs left over for bulk, such as 176 Speed EVs to outspeed Deoxys-A and 144 Speed EVs to outspeed Adamant Choice Scarf Landorus-T, both under rain. For Swampert's Water-type STAB move, Aqua Tail is slightly more powerful than Waterfall, but it lacks perfect accuracy and a chance to flinch the foe. Mega Swampert's coverage move can also be replaced by Stone Edge or Rock Slide to hit Mega Charizard Y outside of rain, but you are almost always better off with Ice Punch or Superpower. You can forgo a coverage move and run Substitute, as a smart Substitute can significantly boost Mega Swampert's field time. Swampert can run Rain Dance over a coverage move in order to reduce your need to rely on Politoed to set rain. While regular Swampert has a niche as a Wide Guard user, it's mostly outclassed by Conkeldurr or Aegislash and only really decent when you need its typing.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Grass-type Pokemon**: Grass-types, namely Breloom, Amoonguss, Ludicolo, and Ferrothorn, resist or take very little damage from both of Mega Swampert's STAB attacks and can either OHKO or cripple it in return.

**Water-type Pokemon**: Bulkier Water-types like Gyarados and Rotom-W resist Mega Swampert's strongest STAB move, Waterfall, take its coverage options with ease, and can do moderate damage to it (especially in rain) and reduce its overall effectiveness.

**Intimidate and Burns**: Because Swampert is a physical sweeper, it is crippled by burns that can be spread by Sableye and Rotom-W, the latter of which can also reliably take Swampert's attacks. It's also hindered by Intimidate, which is best provided by Gyarados and Salamence, as they can usually take Swampert's attacks (Salamence only if Swampert isn't running Ice Punch); Scrafty also can utilize Fake Out to stall rain turns.

**Opposing Weather**: Swampert relies heavily on rain and is relatively weak to most sun and hail teams, so replacing its weather hinders its effectiveness tremendously. Mega Charizard Y can set sun and threaten to OHKO Mega Swampert with Solar Beam, while Abomasnow threatens it with a Grass-type STAB move while replacing rain with hail.

**Tailwind and Trick Room**: These moves take away Mega Swampert's speed advantage, crippling its ability to stay productive on the field. Cresselia, Porygon2, and Jellicent can reliably take anything Swampert has to offer and set Trick Room. Whimsicott can set Tailwind really easily in front of Mega Swampert by making use of Prankster and then potentially OHKO it with a Grass-type STAB move, while Suicune and Zapdos can reliably take Swampert's attacks and set Tailwind in front of it.

Doubleposting just to make sure that you take a look at the new Checks and Counters tags before you finish this WIP, as the system has changed.

The **Grass-type Pokemon** tag and the **Water-type Pokemon** tag should be separated, but otherwise looks good! I'll give this a full actual check later

Overview
  • specify that being immune to thunder wave allows it to act as an effective thundurus check, which is something that rain struggles with.
  • however, unlike the other common rain sweepers, kingdra and ludicolo, its secondary stab isnt exactly groundbreaking (ahaha) on rain.
  • not only does it leave swampert weak to opposing water types, but its offensive ground coverage cant really break that many things that a strong rain-boosted waterfall wouldnt be able to already (save for jirachi or mega gengar or something) (but my point is that neither of these can beat rain anyway)
Moves
  • note that as swampert doesnt get the swift swim boost from on the same turn u mega evolve, protect is necessary to safely nab the swift swim speed boost
Set Details
  • remember to talk about damp. although neither of base swampert's abilities are of any real practical use, damp is potentially more useful than torrent cuz it prevents an opposing landorus-therian or genesect from popping an explosion against u and doing big damage.
Usage Tips
  • while swampert can work well as a late game sweeper in a lot of instances with its strong spread stab of earthquake, it can also function as a strong lead with politoed to mega evolve as soon as possible and to dent the opposing team, especially if they are lacking in rain checks.
  • swampert, being a weather sweeper, should also play aggressively a lot of the time in order to make use of the short supply of rain turns.
Team Options
  • make a broader mention when talking about flying types and say grass-type checks instead. this includes talonflame, kyurem-b, etc
  • fighting types such as conkeldurr and terrakion can also be used with swampert in order to threaten ferrothorn and kyurem-b, both of which threaten swampert and most rain cores
  • water killers also are important, so thundurus, ferrothorn, hydreigon, are all good
  • talonflame and thundurus are good partners also for their ability to threaten sun teams
Other Options
  • swampert can also run a non-mega specially offensive support set with wide guard on certain teams, but is rather niche
Checks & Counters
  • its kind of weird how ur listing the checks. for example, phrase it like this:
    • Grass Types such as Ludicolo, Amoonguss, Ferrothorn, and Breloom tend to resist both of Swampert's STABs and can either OHKO or cripple it in return. The most threatening include: Ludicolo, Amoonguss, Ferrothorn
  • u could mention sableye instead of suicune when talking about burns. it seems like a better fit, suicune fits more under water types

ElegyOfVGC, are you still working on this? xzern gave you a check 4 days ago, so I need you to either implement it in the next 24 hours, provide a good reason why it will be late, or drop the analysis. Thanks!

Overview:
  • "Only viable physical Swift Swim sweeper makes it better against some threats that rain has trouble with" such as? I'm thinking Kyube definitely deserves a mention, others are up to you
  • The secondary STAB is weaker than most others' because of the spread reduction, so be sure to mention that
Set:
  • Add a space before 4 Def and Speed should be shortened to Spe b/c convention
  • I personally want Superpower slashed before Ice Punch but I know other people on QC have disagreed so don't implement that unless I say to later
Moves:
  • Waterfall isn't Mega Swampert's strongest physical Water-type STAB, that would be Aqua Tail. However, Waterfall has the advantage of perfect accuracy and flinch chance, so say something like "Waterfall is Mega Swampert's primary STAB, which has the benefits of being boosted by the rain and a chance to flinch its foe"
  • Add Amoonguss to the Ice Punch targets, that's probably the most relevant of them
  • Add Kyube to the Superpower targets
Set Details:
  • Since Mega Swampert has two possible pre-mega abilities, you have to justify your choice. Probably something along the lines of: "Damp is only useful for switching in on an Explosion, but Torrent will never be useful, as Swampert should always Mega Evolve its first turn on the field."
  • Adamant > Jolly because there are no relevant threats between Adamant and Jolly Swift Swim-bosted Mega Swampert
Usage Tips:
  • Absolutely needs rain to be up before or on the turn that it comes in, otherwise you're not remotely as threatening
  • Waterfall should be the primary attack, as the rain boost, STAB, and lack of spread reduction make it super strong. Other attacks are just used to supplement Waterfall's coverage as necessary
  • Try to get it in close to the turn that the rain begins to get the most turns with the Swift Swim boost as possible
Team Options:
  • Ground-immunes to EQ beside (Talon, Latios, etc)
  • When discussing strong fighting-types, note that it's especially important on non-Superpower Mega Swampert teams
Other Options:
  • Aqua Tail > Waterfall for slightly more power, but you lose the flinch chance and some accuracy, and the power boost doesn't reach any notable benchmarks
  • Rain Dance > Coverage move so that Mega Swampert isn't nearly as reliant on Politoed
Checks and Counters:
  • Take Suicune out of Intim + Burns, add Scrafty and Gyarados, who also have the benefits of Fake Out to stall Rain turns and a Flying-typing to avoid EQ, respectively
  • Add a **Tailwind and Trick Room** tag that discusses how Mega Swampert loses the speed advantage it would otherwise have due to Swift Swim
Tag me when you've implemented the above so that I can give this another look over before sending you to writeup, thanks!

thetalkingtree YO IT ACTUALLY ALERTED ME! Anyways, I implemented everything I totally understood, except I can't think of any examples for the first one atm (I could when I first wrote it lol) and for the last one, should I supply users of Trick Room and Tailwind that can set up reliably in front of Swampert?

Sylveon is the big one that Swampert matches up against better than Ludi or Kingdra. Yeah, add mentions of TR / TW setters that do well against Swampert.

Add those, delete the "ed" at the end of "Speed" in the set, and you're good for QC 2/3!

Tag me once implemented before I give 3/3.

Overview
  • In the first sentence change "on occasion" to "depending on coverage". Also remove Kyurem-B from the first sentence since Kingdra can beat that.
  • Instead of saying that the 4x weakness to Grass is "easily exploitable", say that it leaves Swampert weak to Grass types, which rain already struggle with. Also mention that Swampert actually has pretty good bulk, which is one of the reasons to use it, especially as this means it's less vulnerable to priority.
Moves
  • Move the sentence about Protect to after the one about Ice Punch/Superpower to follow the set order. Similarly, mention Ice Punch before Superpower in the fifth setence.
  • Gives specific examples of what Ice Punch hits (Amoon, Lati).
Set Details
  • Remove the first sentence as it's fluff, and the sentence about not using Jolly as you cover that in the previous setence by saying "all relevant threats".
  • Specify that max Speed lets you outspeed those threats under rain.
  • "Adamant nature", and capitalise the "s" in "Speed".
Usage Tips
  • Combine the first two sentences.
  • Specify on the "threats" that need to be removed (i.e. Grass-types, physically defensive Pokemon). Also mention that having Swampert + a Pokemon that can help remove these (e.g. Talon/Kyube).
Team Options
  • Combine the two sentences about Grass-type checks and remove the "but there are a few more" part as it's fluff.
  • Don't say "just lose to sun" in an analysis, instead say that Swampert is really weak to sun.
  • Combine the two sentences about Fighting-types and not running Superpower.
  • Give a couple examples for Ground immunes as talkingtree said (Talon, Latios).
Other Options
  • Mention what Stone Edge/Rock Slide hits (Mega Charizard Y).
  • Avoid saying "You can also" at the start of setences since it sounds like you're recommending something like Rock Slide + Sub on the same set, instead just say like "A coverage move can be foregone" and "Rain dance can be used".
Checks and Counters
  • Don't say "tend to" in the first point, instead say something like they resist or take little from it's STABs.
  • In the second point, remove Suicune and Ludicolo as they're better covered elsewhere, also remove the bit about burns as that comes under another tag.
  • The sentence about Intimidate should come after the Burns one, not on a new line (fix this for the other tags as well).
  • Condense the speed control part. TR could be reduced to 1/2 setences, and the TW part definitely to 1, as you're just repeating the same thing for each setter which is a bit long-winded.

You still need to do some things, which I will then check again before giving 3/3.

Moves
  • Gives specific examples of what Ice Punch hits (Amoon, Lati).
Usage tips
  • Give examples of what partners can help remove these threats in the last sentence (Kyube, Lati).
Team Options
  • Combine the sentences about Fighting-Types and not using Superpower.
Other Options
  • Remove the mention of Talonflame under Rock Slide/Stone Edge as you already hit it with Waterfall
  • The last sentence is a bit informal, change it to say that regular Pert can run a WG set, but it's outclassed by better things like Aegis/Conk (not something you missed but something I just noticed).
Checks and Counters
  • Move all the points for each tag together as you did for the Intimidate + Burns (it should look something like this https://gyazo.com/ca4f107d3376228c81c6d89063a1e788).
  • Remove the bit about opposing rain under Opposing Weather as that's more because of their typing and isn't actually an opposing weather like hail or sun (another thing just spotted).
  • Don't say "harm's its viability" as this isn't really correct. Just say that they remove Pert's speed advantage (again just spotted).

[OVERVIEW]
Mega Swampert is a very niche rain attacker. It's the only viable physical Swift Swim attacker, as well as and the only one who that can reliably beat Thundurus, Sylveon, and, depending on your its coverage, Ferrothorn. It's Its immunity to paralysis due to its Ground typing means its Speed cannot be crippled like the others'. Also, it's a rain sweeper with some good natural bulk, which is really nice because it. This natural bulk also makes it less weak to priority moves than other rain sweepers, notably Talonflame's Brave Bird and Kangaskhan's Sucker Punch. However, being a physical attacker, it Swampert is especially weak to ("weak to" isn't quite right imo, is something like "bothered by" fine with you?) Intimidate and burns. It also, and it is extremely weak to Grass-types, more so than other rain staples mons. Unlike other Swift Swimmers, it needs to Mega Evolve before it gains Swift Swim, usually giving your opponent a free turn. Finally, unlike other swift swimmers, its secondary STAB move, (RC) Earthquake, (RC) is significantly weaker due to its spread reduction, and it also hits your Mega Swampert's partner.

[SET]
name: Swift Swim Attacker
move 1: Waterfall
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Ice Punch / Superpower
move 4: Protect
item: Swampertite
ability: Damp
nature: Adamant
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Waterfall is almost always your Swampert's best attack, as it is a reliable and strong physical attack that is boosted by rain. Earthquake is your its strongest Ground-type STAB move and also gives Swampert a spread option while providing super effective coverage against Volcanion and Steel-types such as Aegislash. For your Swampert's third move, you will typically run either Ice Punch. Ice Punch hits Grass- and Dragon-types like Amoonguss and Latios for good damage, which Swampert's STAB moves when your STABs can't, while Superpower provides solid coverage versus Mega Kangaskhan, Kyurem-Black, and Ferrothorn. Protect is necessary because Swampert must you need to safely Mega Evolve before you gain it gains Swift Swim. It also either allows your Swampert to stay safe from a threat for a turn while its your partner deals with said threat, (RC) or allows you to safely scout for a threat.

Set Details
========

Running 252 Attack EVs with an Adamant nature allows you Mega Swampert to hit as hard as possible, while 252 Speed EVs lets you it outspeed all relevant threats while under rain, including Jolly Choice Scarf Landorus-T, Choice Scarf Genesect, and Deoxys-Attack. For pre-Mega abilities, Damp is superior to Torrent, as you won't ever use Torrent due to Swampert needing to Mega Evolve ASAP as soon as possible. However, Damp can also let Swampert potentially prevent an Explosion while switching in on occasion.

Usage Tips
========

Mega Swampert is only good once it has Mega Evolved and is in rain, because otherwise when Mega Swampert is not in rain or not Mega Evolved, its damage output is relatively weak low and its Speed is pretty poor. Because of this, try to maximize its time in rain, (RC) by bringing it in as early into the drizzle as early possible. When Mega Evolving Swampert, make smart use of Protect so that it you can safely (redundant with "without consequences") gain the Swift Swim Speed boost without consequences. Mega Swampert is best used as a mid- to late-game sweeper, as it can easily clean up once its threats, such as Grass-types and Water-types, are removed. You can also remove said threats while Swampert is on the field by having another Pokemon partner that can remove them, like Kyurem-B, Latios, or Talonflame, do so before they threaten Swampert on the field at the same time.

Team Options
========

First and foremost, you almost always need a Politoed, as Drizzle automatically sets rain so that you don't need to waste a turn in doing so. You should also have some assets against answers to Grass-types, such as Kyurem-B and Talonflame, as they will almost always beat Mega Swampert, so counter them with pokemon like Kyurem-B and Talonflame. Swampert is really weak to sun due to it being OHKOed by common sun mons Pokemon, like Mega Charizard Y with Solar Beam and Venusaur while in sun, so bring a few good sun checks, such as being Thundurus and Talonflame. If you aren't running Superpower, strong Fighting-types like Terrakion or and Conkeldurr are also good to have in order to beat Ferrothorn and Kyurem-B, huge threats to Swampert rain (what od you mean by "Swampert rain"). Finally, Ground-immune Pokemon immunes like Latios and Talonflame that you can Earthquake next to should be on the team so that you can attack with them your partner while Swampert uses clicking Earthquake.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

You can run various Speed EVs other than 252 to have some EVs left over for bulk. Some of these speeds are, such as 176 Speed EVs to outspeed Deoxys-Attack and 144 Speed EVs to outspeed Adamant Choice Scarf Landorus-T, both inside of under rain. For Swampert's Water-type your water STAB move, Aqua Tail is slightly more powerful than Waterfall, but it lacks perfect accuracy and a chance to induce flinch. Swampert's Your coverage move can also be replaced by Stone Edge or Rock Slide to hit Mega Charizard Y outside of rain, but you are almost always better off with Ice Punch or Superpower. You can forgoe a coverage move and run Substitute, as a smart Substitute can significantly boost Mega Swampert's field time. Swampert can run Rain Dance over a coverage move in order to reduce your need to rely on Politoed to set rain. And while While regular Swampert has a niche as a Wide Guard user, it's mostly outclassed by Conkeldurr or Aegislash and only really decent when you need its typing.

**Water-type Pokemon**: Bulkier Water-types like Gyarados and Rotom-W resist Swampert's strongest STAB move, Waterfall, take it's its coverage options with ease, and can do moderate damage to it (especially in rain,) and reduce its overall effectiveness.
