Hi. As an Ubers player in SPL 5, I have enjoyed watching ORAS matches this year without caring who wins or loses. I wound up taking my SPL sign-up away because I'm not confident I have the time most players have to prepare teams week in and week out with my school schedule & homework, but I have been helping several Ubers players test and hope to continue doing so. I like some of the cores I've seen so far, with Donkey's week one team being my favorite so far, but I'm saddened that Wallceus hasn't been used at all yet. It's a very good Pokemon in this metagame that checks Extremekiller, Mega Salamence, Rayquaza, AND Primal Groudon with one simple set. Because Earth Power is needed to beat Primal Groudon and Wallceus is not really strapped for moveslots, Wallceus can now reasonably threaten Mega Gengar without running an otherwise deadweight move. The typing is not very good on paper, but when you realize it only has one weakness -- and the only relevant Fighting types in the tier are Mega Mewtwo X and the uncommon Lucario and Blaziken -- it doesn't look so bad. And simply put, Leftovers recovery is huge because the passive recovery helps enormously when dealing with Extremekiller or are sitting on a Ho-Oh. It's an anti-offense Pokemon and almost single-handedly beats all of those silly HO teams that are spammed on the ladder.
I also had another neat set on this team that everyone (including ladder players x_x) like to laugh at, but trickroom and I like a lot for checking CM Arceus and ambushing Latias and Primal Groudon: TWave physical Kyogre with Waterfall and Earthquake! Unfortunately, that set was redundant with CM Clefable, so it didn't make the final version of this team. I'd like to see physical Kyogre get some more love on balance, though. It's a boss, especially with Wish and / or cleric support :].
Teambuilding process:
I already knew I wanted to build a team around Arceus, and figured Primal Groudon would be a good Pokemon to add because of how well it handles Primal Kyogre, Xerneas, and Ho-Oh (sorta, with Stone Edge). All three Pokemon can come in on Arceus fairly easily, those the former two do not really like burns. Primal Groudon also sets rocks, torches Ferrothorn and Klefki while burning "checks" with Lava Plume, and deals nice damage with Precipice Blades. All in all a fairly good Pokemon...it does alright.
I added the aforementioned physical Kyogre to help check CM Arceus while adding another Pokemon that assists the team both offensively and defensively. Thunder Wave is such a great move! BZZT!
Latios was added to provide a secondary check to Primal Kyogre, taking enormous pressure off Primal Groudon's shoulders. I use it over Latias because I don't need my Lati to counter Kyogre. In addition, the edge in physical bulk that Latias has over Latios isn't really useful to this team since I'm fine against Primal Groudon as it is.
Next up is a physically defensive Ho-Oh, used to phaze out enemy Extremekiller and Xerneas while checking most Mewtwo fairly well. It used the standard spread with 52 Special Defense EV's and a tiny bit of speed creep. You'd never know it by watching ORAS SPL matches, but Choice Band is not a Mega Stone for Ho-Oh. I sometimes used Mega Diancie in Ho-Oh's place, but found the flying resist didn't really help that much and I became much weaker to Ferrothorn.
Finally, I added a Calm Mind Clefable to the mix to help deal with Xerneas and CM Arceus. This team did very well on the ladder (obviously, so does Shelgon so that says nothing) but after playtesting it vs. actual players and talking to Jibaku and Fireburn on IRC, I realized there were some exploitable weaknesses even though the team did fairly well bc of the work Wallceus and Kyogre put in.
-Stone Edge Mega Lucario runs through this team (fortunately I hadn't seen it)
-No cleric on balance, meaning Stall can frustrate it with Toxic spam if they can handle the janky Kyogre set alright.
-Weak to Darkrai, also slightly weak to Ho-Oh but not a mon that can't be played around
-Weak to some Mewtwo variants
I made the following changes to address there issues, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of my favorite Pokemon on the team:
over
over
Mega Diancie with lots of bulk investment helped deal with LO Darkrai even if my opponent didn't blindly spam Dark Void, and also gave me a cleric and a back-up Salamence check. It also beats Ho-Oh unless I switch it into a Band Earthquake. Physically Defensive Yveltal can beat most Mewtwo and SD Arceus formes, and just Roost stalls Band Ho-Oh, though I need Heat Wave on it to smash Ferrothorn and annoy some other Steel types such as Klefki. Heat Wave also makes for a nifty Lucario answer, dealing 83-97% to it. It puts pressure on Wallceus to beat Life Orb Extremekiller and SD Groundceus, but Wallceus beats both easily unless it gets haxed.
In-depth look:
hollywood (Arceus) @ Leftovers
Ability: Multitype
EVs: 248 HP / 204 Def / 56 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Earth Power
- Ice Beam
- Will-O-Wisp
- Recover
Already talked a lot about this Pokemon, but it checks practically every physical threat in the game barring Ho-Oh (which is Recover stalled if the situation calls for it & I don't want to risk Diancie eating an Earthquake ) and weird shit like Sub EKiller. The typing is a blessing and a curse, giving it one rare weakness but no resistances and one near-useless immunity. On stall, I don't know if you could get away with running a Normal Arceus but on balance, it serves as a quality backbone and blanket check to many things, including EKiller / Salamence / Rayquaza / SD Groundceus / SD Ghostceus / Zekrom / Primal Groudon. Earth Power is for Primal Groudon, Mega Gengar, and Heatran while dealing chip damage to Klefki if it's already been burned, Ice Beam nails Dragons and Will-O-Wisp's role is obvious. Recover replenishes health. A simple, yet beautiful Pokemon.
atomicllamas (Groudon) @ Red Orb
Ability: Drought
EVs: 248 HP / 52 Def / 188 SpD / 20 Spe
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Precipice Blades
- Lava Plume
- Stone Edge
Primal Groudon is absolutely ridiculous in this metagame, and of the 10 or so teams I've built, only one of them didn't have a PDon on the team. Smogon Pebbles are mandatory on every team ever, and I like Precipice Blades over Earthquake to deal as much damage to stuff like defensive Xerneas as possible (3HKOing that is nice). Lava Plume is fun to burn Groudon's ever so shaky "checks" while generally forcing Groundceus switchins to Recover as I switch Groudon out of it. I usually like Toxic in this slot but this team does not have the luxury of running it because Ferrothorn is to troublesome otherwise. Stone Edge helps deal with Ho-Oh and offensive Yveltal. Groudon sadly cannot afford to run much speed creep to check what it needs to multiple times, but I like having a little speed because Groudon vs. Groudon match-ups are not rare in this metagame. I only stay in on opposing Groudon in an emergency anyway since I have Wallceus and Yveltal.
jrp (Latios) (M) @ Soul Dew
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draco Meteor
- Psyshock
- Recover
- Defog
Latios gives this team a nice secondary Kyogre check, as well as a threatening holepuncher that can pressure the opponent. Defog is necessary for this team as Mega Diancie loses to most SR setters as well as Ferrothorn; by no means is Magic Bounce enough to stop hazards reliably in this metagame (or in any for that matter). Draco Meteor and Psyshock both hit hard and I have enough random Fire moves on this team to forgo HP Fire. The 0 Attack IV's reduce Foul Play damage, which is almost never useful seeing as Yveltal will just Sucker Punch you anyway. I have OCD so I set it anyway.
Novaray (Yveltal) @ Leftovers
Ability: Dark Aura
EVs: 248 HP / 236 Def / 24 Spe
Bold Nature
- Heat Wave
- Sucker Punch
- Foul Play
- Roost
A mostly standard Yveltal, with one change to pants overeager Mega Lucario: Heat Wave. Heat Wave also roasts Ferrothorn and deals 45-50% to car keys, which isn't bad at all considering Yveltal is uninvested. Despite the Bold nature, I still have Sucker Punch on this because it OHKOes MM2Y almost 100% of the time anyway. Most Ubers players know how this set works, even if I feel the ladder overrates this a little bit. It's still a good answer to most Mewtwo, though the now-rare Stalltwo are annoying to deal with. I also have other physical so it doesn't need to worry about getting ambushed by a Stone Edge EKiller most of the time.
tennisace (Diancie) @ Diancite
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 168 Def / 76 SpD / 12 Spe
Bold Nature
- Diamond Storm
- Heal Bell
- Toxic
- Moonblast
Diancie is an excellent check to Darkrai because of Magic Bounce and its Dark resistance. The gen 5 Magic Bounce users could never safely come in on Darkrai because they were both frail Psychic types, but Diancie is a totally different animal. This Diancie is EV'd to tank a +2 Life Orb Sludge Bomb from Darkrai after Stealth Rock and kill back with Moonblast. Heal Bell is great on balance teams in general because status is everywhere in Gen 6 Ubers. Diamond Storm beats up Ho-Oh and can give Diancie free defense boosts. Toxic is used to hit Ground switchins, Kyogre, Arceus formes, etc. Toxic is also nice to spam against dual screens Deo-S, since it cannot prevent you from crippling whatever your opponent eventually switches into Diancie. Finally, Moonblast allows it to kill Salamence and Arceus-Dark. Since Clefable does not have Moonblast, Diancie needs it. Overall, I like Diancie a lot, even if it struggles vs most SR setters 1-1.
Frizy (Clefable) @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: NaN Atk
- Calm Mind
- Wish
- Protect
- Flamethrower
This set might look a bit odd at first, but I like Flamethrower Clefable a lot and have ever since Blim brought it against me last SPL. While most players won't send in Ferrothorn on Yveltal (Taunt / Foul Play / Dark Pulse / Focus Blast are all unfriendly to it), they love sending Ferro in on Clefable, only to take solid damage from Flamethrower. Wish support is crucial for this team, as Mega Diancie and Primal Groudon really appreciate the extra recovery. Calm Mind is also important on this set, as it makes beating Geomancy Xerneas a HELL of a lot easier while setting up on Calm Mind Arceus that try to outstall Clefable. It's rarely going to pull off a sweep, especially without Moonblast, but Calm Mind is excellent on Unaware Clefable. Many people run Heal Bell, but I have Mega Diancie for that so no big loss. Clefable is also an excellent answer to Yveltal.
Willing to listen to suggestions, though I'm probably done using this team. Just wanted to give some love to muh nigga WALLCEUS
