LC Torchic

[OVERVIEW]

Torchic has a relatively good niche as an offensive support Pokemon, since it is the only Pokemon with access to both Speed Boost and Baton Pass. Its access to some good boosting moves such as Swords Dance, Curse, and Flame Charge along with its relatively good support moves makes it an excellent Speed passer. Its offensive stats, both physically and specially, are also nothing to scoff at, as the offensive pressure it has can force a fair number of switches. However, its movepool isn't very wide in terms of attacking moves. If running an offensive set, Torchic's coverage is mediocre at best, and if running a dedicated Baton Pass set, it doesn't have enough offensive pressure to force switches. It also has only mediocre bulk, so it can't switch into many threats and struggles to set up more than one or two boosts before it is forced to use Baton Pass. Its weakness to Stealth Rock and Water-types, some common ones being Chinchou, Staryu, and Mareanie, can be troublesome as well, as it makes it hard to switch in. Fully supportive Baton Pass Torchic can be easily played around by Taunt users and can be hard to use effectively.

Moves
========

Protect is mainly used to get up to +1 Speed with Speed Boost or scout Choice Scarf users. Fire Blast deals heavy damage against most of the tier and 2HKOes most of what doesn't resist it, including Mienfoo and Vullaby. Hidden Power Grass hits Water- and Rock-types fairly hard, KOing Omanyte and 2HKOing Solid Rock Tirtouga. Substitute allows Torchic to safely pass to its teammates, even when faced with its checks. Baton Pass lets Torchic pass its Speed boosts to its teammates — slow, hard-hitting Pokemon in particular — and is great offensive support.

Set Details
========

Life Orb, maximum EVs in Special Attack, and a Modest nature give Torchic a lot of power and help it deal damage much more effectively. It also has near-maximum Speed, reaching 14 Speed, to help it outspeed Omanyte before Shell Smash and a fully bulky Vullaby even when it's unboosted. Its remaining EVs are put into Defense and Special Defense to raise each by one point, helping Torchic's survivability. Speed Boost allows Torchic to outspeed the entire unboosted metagame at +1 and almost every boosted sweeper at +2 or +3.

Usage Tips
========

Life Orb Torchic is most effective as a late-game cleaner and a generally good pivot. Using Protect the first turn Torchic comes in can help it outspeed every unboosted Pokemon in Little Cup and will start off a potential sweep, although it is very predictable and opposing setup sweepers often will take advantage of this. Similarly, using Substitute on a predicted switch can help Torchic accrue its Speed boosts much more easily. Fire Blast is easily Torchic's most powerful move and should be used against all non-resistant targets. If a Pokemon that can KO Torchic switches in, passing Speed boosts to a teammate that resists the predicted move is a good idea. Using Volt Switch or U-turn users to get Torchic in safely for a sweep can keep it from being KOed before it can do much, as it is rather frail. Baton Pass can be used to quickly get Torchic out of danger or pass boosts to another teammate. Torchic is fairly good at wearing its checks down by baiting them in, hitting them with a Fire Blast or Hidden Power Grass, and getting out quickly with a Baton Pass, although this should mostly be done early-game.

Team Options
========

Bulky attackers such as Timburr and Vullaby can wear down bulkier Pokemon for Torchic to clean up late-game. Entry hazard support from Dwebble or Ferroseed can help Torchic KO Onix, Magnemite, and other Sturdy users. Rapid Spin support from Staryu can help Torchic switch in more without fear of hazards, and their type synergy makes them a good core. Defog and other Rapid Spin users such as Vullaby and Sandshrew can do this job as well, but none has the synergy Staryu does. Slower, bulkier pivots such as Pancham, Mienfoo, and Berry Juice Chinchou can help Torchic get in unscathed. Slower sweepers, such as Timburr, Corphish, and even Dewpider, appreciate Torchic's boosts and can sweep more easily with them. Water-type checks such as Croagunk, Snivy, and Chinchou can be helpful, as Hidden Power Grass isn't too powerful. All of the Grass-type checks listed above appreciate Speed boosts as well. Knock Off support from Mienfoo or Pawniard can help Torchic clean up late-game by crippling bulkier Pokemon.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Protect lets Torchic scout out foes' moves and lets it boost its Speed. Curse lets Torchic boost its Attack and Defense, and since its Speed is passively boosted every turn, the drops from Curse don't matter. Swords Dance can be used over Curse to pass extra Attack and Speed, but the Defense gained from Curse can be hard to pass up. Will-O-Wisp can help cripple physical threats and let Torchic set up easier. Substitute helps Torchic set up on threats more easily and, if kept intact, can be passed along with stat boosts. Flame Charge can be used as an attacking move to surprise Cottonee after Torchic is boosted and to pass extra Speed. Baton Pass lets Torchic pass all these boosts to its allies.

Set Details
========

196 Defense EVs, 36 Special Defense EVs, Eviolite, and an Impish nature allow Torchic to tank powerful hits such as the likes of a Scald from Chinchou and bulky Staryu as well as avoid a 2HKO from Mienfoo most of the time. Berry Juice can be used as an alternative to Eviolite to help Torchic switch into Stealth Rock more without fainting, but it consequentially lacks the bulk it likes. The rest of its EVs are put into Speed and Attack, the former to help it set up before it gets a Speed boost and the latter to help Flame Charge hit harder if used. Speed Boost lets Torchic boost Speed passively.

Usage Tips
========

Setting up a Substitute or just plain boosting with Curse or Swords Dance when a foe switches out can help Torchic get set up without wasting a turn on Protect. Usually, Torchic should use Protect against faster foes to gain a Speed boost; however, when predicting a switch, setting up instead can surprise your opponent and greatly benefit your team. Torchic does best against passive Pokemon such as Ferroseed and Spritzee, as it can boost freely, so switching it into either is usually a good idea, although a Thunder Wave from the former can be troublesome. These Pokemon as well as other Pokemon that can't damage Torchic much, such as Larvesta and Ponyta, can be set up on easily. Leading with Torchic is generally not a good idea, as it cannot handle many other leads, namely Onix, Dwebble, and Staryu. However, if being used in large Baton Pass chains, it makes a good lead because it can passively boost its Speed. Always be wary of setup sweepers that can boost faster than Torchic, such as Omanyte, Shellder, Carvanha, and Snivy, as they can KO Torchic before it uses Baton Pass. Torchic is never a great switch-in, as it doesn't have great bulk. Also be careful of Z-Move users such as Gastly, as they can break through Protect and potentially eliminate Torchic. When setting up, make sure Torchic is still healthy enough that it can survive long enough to do so. Remember to be wary of both priority and Taunt users, as the former can eliminate Torchic before it passes and the latter can completely stop it in its tracks.

Team Options
========

Any physical Pokemon that can sweep, especially ones that can't boost their Speed such as Swords Dance Corphish and Timburr, appreciate Torchic's support greatly. Rapid Spin and Defog users, the most prominent being Staryu, Vullaby, and Drilbur, can clear hazards, letting Torchic switch in without losing too much HP. Baton Pass-chaining Pokemon such as Togepi and Mime Jr, even though they are both very niche, can together make one extremely boosted Pokemon on your team. Bulky Grass-types, such as Foongus and Ferroseed, can threaten the Water-types that threaten Torchic and are generally useful. Cottonee in particular can Encore or Taunt setup sweepers that try to set up on Torchic, and in return Torchic can pass Speed boosts to it. Rowlet as well can either participate in a Baton Pass chain or clear hazards for Torchic with Defog. Pokemon with Volt Switch or U-turn can help bring Torchic in without it losing HP. Answers to Ground-types, such as Pumpkaboo-XL, Staryu, and again, Cottonee, make good partners.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Certain boosting Z-Moves such as Hone Claws, Will-O-Wisp, and especially Mirror Move can give Torchic extra boosts, but the fact that they take up an item slot (with the loss of Eviolite making Torchic even frailer) and can only be used once a game make them extremely situational. Rock Slide can be used on the Life Orb set to hit Flying-types, such as Rufflet and Vullaby, and Fire-types, such as Ponyta and Larvesta. Using Flamethrower as an alternative to Fire Blast can give more reliable damage, but Torchic usually needs Fire Blast's higher power. Will-O-Wisp and Hone Claws can be used on Baton Pass chains to weaken physical attackers and to assist Rufflet, respectively, but they don't do much besides these niches.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Setup Sweepers**: Setup sweepers like Carvanha and Bulk Up Timburr can capitalize on Baton Pass Torchic's lack of attacking moves to sweep. Shell Smash users such as Shellder, Clamperl, and Omanyte in particular can win just by boosting against Torchic.

**Water-types**: Water-types can easily KO Torchic and stop anything it wants to do, and many of them can sweep as well. Many, namely Corphish and Tirtouga, also carry Aqua Jet to KO Torchic or at least force it to switch.

**Taunt**: Taunt from Cottonee, Onix, and Mienfoo can stop Baton Pass Torchic from doing anything bar Flame Charge.

**Phazers**: Mareanie's Haze, Munchlax's Roar, Onix's Roar or Dragon Tail, and Hippopotas's Whirlwind can eliminate boosts from Torchic even through Substitute.

**Entry Hazards**: Entry hazards limit the number of times Torchic can switch in to set up, but they can be dealt with easily by Rapid Spin or Defog users.

  • Since Baton Pass is unrestricted in Little Cup, and Torchic is the only Pokemon with access to Speed Boost and Baton Pass, it has a fairly good niche as an offensive support.
  • Its access to some good stat boosting moves, such as Swords Dance, Curse, and Flame Charge which only help it more.

  • It also has only mediocre bulk, so it can't switch into many threats.
  • Its weakness to Stealth Rock and Water-types can be troublesome as well. You should mention why it is weak to Stealth Rock and Water-types (etc.) here
  • Mention that if you don't run any moves on Baton pass Torchic, it needs to be very careful and can end up being useless if played around correctly, such as by using Taunt.

Moves

  • Protect is mainly used to get up to +1 Speed with Speed boost or scout Choice Scarf users.
  • Fire Blast is Torchic's main STAB move and hits very hard. You should give examples of Pokemon that it can hit
  • Hidden Power Grass hits Water- and Rock-types fairly hard, and can KO ceratin Water/Rock-types such as Omanyte and Solid Rock Tirtouga.
  • Baton Pass lets Torchic pass its Speed Boosts to its teammates and is great offensive support. Maybe you can give some examples here of Pokemon that appreciate Speed Boosts
  • Substitute allows Torchic to pass Substitute to its teammates, even when faced with its biggest checks.

Set Details
========

  • Life Orb, maximum EVs in Special Attack, and the Modest nature, give Torchic a lot of power and help it deal damage much more effectively.
  • It also has near maximum Speed to help it outspeed certain Pokemon, even before a Protect. For clarity, you should make it clear that the Protect you are mention here is the Protect used by Torchic because some people might think you mean opposing mons using Protect
  • The rest of the EVs are put into Defense and Special defense to help Chinchou survive longer. Chinchou???
  • Speed Boost helps Torchic outspeed most Pokemon after a few turns and is just a great ability.

Usage Tips
========

  • Life Orb Torchic is a pretty effective late game cleaner and a generally good momentum taker.
  • Using Protect the first turn you come in can help you outspeed every non-boosted Pokemon in Little Cup and will start off a potential sweep.
  • Fire Blast is easily Torchic's most powerful move and should be used against all non-resisting target.
  • If a Pokemon that can KO Torchic with Torchic taking it out switches in, Baton Passing your Speed Boosts into a resisting teammate is a good idea
  • Mention how VoltTurn support allows Torchic to safely get in and start to setup & sweep

Team Options
========

  • Pokemon that appreciate having bulky foes such as Timburr and Vullaby weakened pair well with Torchic and most can also sweep for Torchic with its boosts.
  • Entry hazard support from Dwebble or Ferroseed can help Torchic KO Onix, Magnemite, and other Sturdy users.
  • Rapid Spin support from Staryu can help Torchic switch in more because it doesn't have to fear damage from Stealth Rock, and together they make a very speedy core.
  • Scarf users really appreciate Torchic's ability to wallbreak bulky foes, so you can mention how they make good teammates to deal with mons Torchic cannot. A perfect example is Scarf Chinchou
  • You could mention Pokemon that appreciate getting Speed Boosts from Torchic

  • Protect keeps Torchic from dying before it can get a Speed Boost, although Z-moves can break through it.
  • Swords Dance lets Torchic pass a great Attack boost to its allies along with the Speed it gets passively.
  • Curse can be used over Swords Dance to pass Defense, although the Attack boost isn't as large and it forces Torchic to only pass one Speed Boost.
  • Substitute helps Torchic set up on its threats more easily and if kept up can be passed along with stat boosts.
  • Flame Charge can be used as an attacking move to surprise Cottonee and pass extra Speed.
  • Baton Pass lets Torchic pass all these boosts to its allies.

Set Details

  • This set helps give Torchic enough bulk to survive long enough that it can pass its boosts with its defensive EVs and Impish nature, as well as Eviolite.
  • Berry Juice can be used as an alternative to Eviolite to help Torchic switch into Stealth Rock more without dying, but it subsequently lacks the bulk it likes.

  • Speed Boost lets Torchic boost Speed passively, and is always better when compared to Blaze

Usage Tips

  • However, if being used in large Baton Pass chains, it makes a good lead as it can passively boost its Speed.
  • Always be wary of set up sweepers who can out boost you, as they can KO you before you Baton Pass

  • Bulky Grass-types can threaten the Water-types that threaten Chinchou and are generally useful. give more examples other than Cottonee, eg. Foongus.
  • Cottonee in particular can Encore or Taunt set up sweepers that try to set up on Torchic combine this with the above sentence
  • Pokemon with Volt Switch or U-turn can help Torchic in without losing HP
  • Pokemon that don't mind Taunt can also be of use, because Taunt just cripples Torchic and renders it completely useless

great job, although my only piece of advice here is to remember to give examples, especially in CC because it can be p important most of the times, other than that this looks good :toast:
Implemented, but I have a few notes:
1. Just a comment it's kind of weird how you do your checks GP style, just weird to put in not really bad.
2. There are times when adding examples doesn't make sense. For example, everything that Fire Blast hits wouldn't be staying in on Torchic in the first place, and it is just a move to use against anything that doesn't resist Fire.
3. Under Team Options on the second set, it doesn't make grammatical sense to combine those sentences based on the way I wrote them, and with other examples included, it would just sound weird.
4. In the one place where I said Chinchou instead of Torchic, I was also working with my Chinchou analysis, and I was tired.

Good job, as you caught most of the stuff I missed. Thank you!

I genuinely think Baton Pass should be the first mentioned set over Life Orb. Torchic's main niche in the metagame is as a speed/attack baton passer and I really don't think Life Orb, a more offensively inclined set, is representing that. It's not that LO is bad, it's very underrated actually, more so that it has competition as a Fire-type special attacker with stuff like Vulpix and Houndour whereas a flat out support set with BP doesn't as much.
Overview
* Give some examples of water types Torchic hates dealing with.
* I think Torchic's predictability is worth mentioning. More often than not you'll be able to tell what it's going to do and properly deal with it, which definitely hurts it.

Set: Life Orb
Set
Fine

Moves
* Give some examples of mons that are hit hard by Fire Blast. Be sure to mention how whether they're hit for OHKOs or 2HKOs as well.
* Be a little more specific about KOing Tirtouga and Omanyte. Solid Rock Tirtouga will be 2HKOed by HP Grass more often than not while it hits Omanyte for a guaranteed OHKO, just think its important to clarify this.
* Idk if the Timburr mention is necessary. This is really only needed under team options. Saying that it can pass Speed boosts to teammates is enough info.

Set Details
* Give examples of Pokemon it outspeeds when unboosted, and tell us what speed it hits with its investment (14 I believe).
* Your line on Torchic's defensive investment is a little vague. Idk if its granted better survivability against many attacks with the investment, but if so, give examples of attacks that its bulk allows it to tank. If not, just say that its remaining EVs are invested in its defenses in order to hit 11 Defense and 12 Special Defense.
* Change your phrasing on the Speed Boost line. I'd just say that thanks to Speed Boost, it is capable of outpacing the entire unboosted metagame at +1, as the current sentence is a bit unspecific.

Usage Tips
* What does 'Momentum Taker' mean? I think a better way to say this would be "Momentum Generator."
* Saying that Torchic is effective late game is fine, but I don't think this necessarily specifies that's it best late game, so reword this to clarify that it's most effective as a late game cleaner/sweeper.
* 'If a Pokemon that can KO Torchic with Torchic taking it out switches in'
I very well understand what that line is trying to suggest, but this part is rather confusing when you read it and should be reworded.
* Specify that Torchic's frailty is why its useful to bring in via slow pivot support. Alongside pivot support, you can also mention that Torchic can be sent out after a teammate has fainted.
* Add that if running Substitute, Torchic should use it on predicted switches so its able to potentially gain another stat boost with protect and safely bring a teammate onto the field.

Team Options
* I get what you're trying to say in your first line, but its worded rather poorly and is a bit confusing unless read a few times. Say something along the lines of "Poweful offensive Pokemon such as Timburr and Vullaby both appreciate Torchic's ability to weaken bulkier threats, as well as provide them with a boost in Speed via Baton Pass."
* Alongside Rapid Spin support, mention Defog support from the likes of bulky Vullaby and Stunky.
* I think that due to its poor bulk, Torchic generally appreciates slow pivot support as opposed to fast. I'd mention bulky Chinchou and Pancham as good examples of Pokemon that can safely bring Chinchou in. I honestly don't know if fast pivot support is worth mentioning but that one's more of a toss up.
* Water-type checks like Snivy, Croagunk and Chinchou deserve mentions imo, as HP Grass isn't going to do too significant of damage to water-type foes, which in return can OHKO Torchic with STAB. Add this and elaborate on what Water-type checks can do for Torchic (remove or weaken Water-types and deal with Fire-, Ground- and Rock-types). I'd also add that all of the aforementioned pokes appreciate a speed boost.
* Ground-type checks are also useful since Torchic hates taking Ground-type attacks. Examples include Pumpkaboo, Staryu and Vullaby. These pokes also appreciate speed boosts.

Set: Baton Pass
Set
* Move Curse before Swords Dance, since most BP recipients will benefit from both offensive and defensive boosts.
* Other than that this is fine except I'd move this set to be the first one.

Moves
* I wouldn't say the main purpose of Protect is to keep Torchic from dying before it can boost its speed. Instead say that its useful for scouting out opponent's moves and gain a speed boost. I also don't think the Z-Move mention is unnecessary, that's better for Usage Tips.
* Reword Curse and SD sentences, since I genuinely think that Curse is the better between the two.
* Be a little more specific about Flame Charge. It really only hits Cottonee for notable damage when attack has been boosted, so mention that.

Set Details
* Your line regarding Torchic's bulk investment needs more specification. What hits can it survive with its investment. I'd also mention its exact EVs and restructure the sentence, starting with "196 Defense EVs, 36 Special Defense EVs, Eviolite and an Impish nature allow Torchic to tank powerful hits from the likes of *give examples*"
* Replace the word 'dying' with 'fainting'
* Blaze doesn't need to be mentioned at all.

Usage Tips
* I don't quite understand your first line. Are you trying to suggest that it's useful using these moves when opponents switch out? I'd reword this section since I don't quite understand what you're trying to suggest. If you aren't suggesting that setting up is good when predicting switches, then add that.
* Mention that if setting up, Torchic must be healthy enough to take potentially powerful attacks.
* I'd also mention that Torchic has an easy time setting up on things that can't damage it much, like Larvesta and Ponyta.
* Give examples of set up sweepers that can outboost you, given that you said these kinds of pokes threaten Torchic.
* Here is where you should mention Z-Moves breaking through protect.

Team Options
* Togepi and Mime Jr. can definitely function as decent partners on BP chain teams, but I think its worth mentioning that they're really niche and hard to fit on a team.
* Include that alongside stopping set up sweepers, Cottonee appreciates Torchic's speed boost support (its almost always offensive nowadays).
* Add that answers to Ground-types such as Staryu, Cottonee and Pumpkaboo are useful.
* Hazard control is still important for this set as well. Torchic may want to baton pass boosts more than once and generally just appreciates not having to switch into a Stealth Rock infested field.

Other Options
* I'd add that Rock Slide can be used on the Life Orb set to hit Flying-types like Rufflet and Fire-types (give examples) but is generally not preferred as it has little user outside of this.
* Add that because Z-crystals take up an item, Torchic will be notably frailer than when holding an Eviolite.
* Add in your Will-O-Wisp line, mention that it also has use given that it can burn physical attackers.

Implement these changes and give yourself 1/3. Good job

Edit: I'd also suggest taking Dewpider out of this analysis. It's not super relevant or good and I feel like a better example can be used.

  • I'd change the 'Haze and Roar' section to a 'Phazing' section. Also mention Munchlax here, especially since it can easily take Torchic's Fire Blast easily thanks to Thick Fat, and Hippopotas doesn't run Roar, it runs Whirlwind (not sound based, so unaffected by Soundproof. Small difference, but it's still true)
  • I'm not entirely sure how much I like the Entry Hazard section here, especially since you say 'they aren't troublesome enough to force you to run a hazard remover'. If they don't even do that, how are they a counter. I'll leave this one up to you though.

[OVERVIEW]

Torchic has a relatively good niche as an offensive support Pokemon, (AC) since it is the only Pokemon with access to Speed Boost and Baton Pass, which it can abuse due to the absence of Baton Pass Clause in Little Cup. Its access to some good stat boosting moves, such as Swords Dance, Curse, and Flame Charge which only help it more, (RC) and. thing This, along with its relatively good support moves make it an excellent speed Speed passer. Its offensive stats, both physically and specially, are also nothing to scoff at, as the offensive pressure it has can force a fair amount of switches. However, its movepool isn't very wide in terms of attacking moves. If running an offensive set, Torchic's coverage is mediocre at best, and if running a dedicated Baton Pass set, it doesn't have enough offensive pressure to force switches. It also has only mediocre bulk, so it can't switch into many threats and it struggles to set up more than one or two boosts before it is forced to Baton Pass out use Baton Pass. Life Orb Torchic is most effective as a late game late-game cleaner and a generally good momentum gainer. Using Protect the first turn you come Torchic comes in can help you it outspeed every non-boosted Pokemon in Little Cup and will start off a potential sweep, although it is very predictable, (RC) and set up setup sweepers oftn often will take advantage of this. Similarly, using Substitute on a predicted switch can help Torchic set up its Speed Boosts boosts much more easily. Fire Blast is easily Torchic's most powerful move and should be used against all non-resisting target targets. If a Pokemon that can KO Torchic switches in, Baton Passing your Speed Boosts boosts into a resisting teammate that resists the predicted move is a good idea. Using Volt Switch or U-turn users to get Torchic in safely for a sweep can keep it from dying being KOed before it can do much, as it is rather frail. Baton Pass can be used to quickly get Torchic out of danger or pass boosts to another teammate. 196 Defense EVs, 36 Special Defense EVs, Eviolite, (AC) and an Impish nature allow Torchic to tank powerful hits from the likes of a Scald from Chinchou and bulky Staryu, as well as avoiding a 2HKO from Mienfoo most of the time. Berry Juice can be used as an alternative to Eviolite to help Torchic switch into Stealth Rock more without fainting, but it subsequently lacks the bulk it likes. The rest of its EVs are put into Speed and Attack, the former to help it set up before it gets a Speed Boost boost, (RC) and the latter to help Flame Charge hit harder if used. Usage Tips

Setting up a Substitute, or just plain boosting with Curse or Swords Dance when an opponent a foe switches out can help you Torchic get set up without wasting a turn on Protect. Usually, Torchic should use Protect against faster foes to gain a Speed Boost boost, however, (AC) when face with a predicted predicting a switch, setting up instead can surprise your opponent and greatly benefit your team. Torchic does best against passive Pokemon such as Ferroseed and Spritzee, as it can boost freely, so switching it in to either is usually a good idea, although a Thunder Wave from the former can be troublesome. These Pokemon, as well as other Pokemon who which (do not use "who" to refer to Pokemon) can't damage Torchic much, such as Larvesta and Ponyta, can be set up on easily. Leading with Torchic is generally not a good idea, as it cannot handle many other leads, namely Onix, Dwebble, and Staryu. However, if being used in large Baton Pass chains, it makes a good lead as it can passively boost its Speed. Always be wary of set up setup sweepers who can out boost you which can boost faster than Torchic, such as Omanyte, Shellder, Carvanha, and Snivy, as they can KO you before you Baton Pass Torchic before it uses Baton Pass. Torchic isn't ever a great switch in, as it doesn't have great bulk. Also be careful of Z-move Z-Move users, such as Gastly, as they can break through Protect and potentially eliminate Torchic. When setting up, make sure Torchic is still healthy enough that it can survive long enough to do so. Remember to be wary of both priority and Taunt users, as the former can eliminate Torchic before it passes, (RC) and the latter can completely stop it in its tracks.

Any physical Pokemon that can sweep, especially ones who which can't boost their Speed, such as Swords Dance Corphish or Timburr, appreciate Torchic's support greatly. Using Flamethrower as an alternative to Fire Blast can be give more reliable damage, but Torchic needs more power usually. Will-O-Wisp and Hone Claws can be used on Baton Pass chains to weaken physical attackers and to assist Rufflet respectively, but they don't do much besides these niches.

Checks and Counters

**Set up Setup Sweepers**: Set up Setup sweepers like Carvanha and Bulk Up Timburr can capitalize on Baton Pass Torchic's lack of attacking moves and be able to sweep off of it. Shell Smash users such as Shellder, Clamperl, and Omanyte, in particular can win only off of boosting against Torchic.

**Water-types**: Water-types can easily KO Torchic and stop anything it wants to do, and many of them can sweep as well. Many, namely Corphish and Tirtouga, also carry Aqua jet Aqua Jet and can KO Torchic (you already said water types can KO torchic above, what makes aqua jet users any different? is it because they ignore any speed boosts it has?), or at least force it to switch.

**Taunt**: Taunt from Cottonee, Onix, or Mienfoo can stop Baton Pass Torchic from doing anything bar Flame Charge.

**Phazers**: Mareanie's Haze, Munchlax's Roar, Onix's Roar or Dragon Tail, and Hippopotas's Whirlwind can eliminate boosts from Torchic even through Substitute.

**Entry Hazards**: Entry Hazards hazards limit the amount of times Torchic can switch in to set up, but they can be dealt with easily by Rapid Spin or Defog users.

Its weakness to Stealth Rock and Water-types, some common ones being Chinchou, Staryu, and Mareanie, (RC) can be troublesome as well, as it makes it hard to switch in. Fully supportive Baton Pass Torchic can be easily played around by Taunt users and can be hard to use effectively.

**Setup Sweepers**: Setup sweepers like Carvanha and Bulk Up Timburr can capitalize on Baton Pass Torchic's lack of attacking moves and be able to sweep off of it. Shell Smash users such as Shellder, Clamperl, and Omanyte, (RC) in particular can win only off of boosting against Torchic.

**Water-types**: Water-types can easily KO Torchic and stop anything it wants to do, and many of them can sweep as well. Many, namely Corphish and Tirtouga, also carry Aqua Jet and can KO Torchic, or at least force it to switch.

**Entry Hazards**: Entry hazards limit the number amount of times Torchic can switch in to set up, but they can be dealt with easily by Rapid Spin or Defog users.

[OVERVIEW]

Torchic has a relatively good niche as an offensive support Pokemon, since it is the only Pokemon with access to Speed Boost and Baton Pass, which it can take advantage of abuse due to the absence of Baton Pass Clause in Little Cup. Its access to some good stat boosting moves, such as Swords Dance, Curse, and Flame Charge, (AC) only help it more. This, along with its relatively good support moves makes it an excellent Speed passer. Its offensive stats, both physically and specially, are also nothing to scoff at, as the offensive pressure it has can force a fair amount number of switches. However, its movepool isn't very wide in terms of attacking moves. If running an offensive set, Torchic's coverage is mediocre at best, and if running a dedicated Baton Pass set, it doesn't have enough offensive pressure to force switches. It also has only mediocre bulk, so it can't switch into many threats and it struggles to set up more than one or two boosts before it is forced to use Baton Pass. Its weakness to Stealth Rock and Water-types, some common ones being Chinchou, Staryu, and Mareanie, (AC) can be troublesome as well, as it makes it hard to switch in. Fully supportive Baton Pass Torchic can be easily played around by Taunt users and can be hard to use effectively.

Protect is mainly used to get up to +1 Speed with Speed Boost or scout Choice Scarf users. Fire Blast deals heavy damage against most of the tier and 2HKOes most of what doesn't resist it, including Mienfoo and Vullaby. Hidden Power Grass hits Water- and Rock-types fairly hard;, (AC) KOing Omanyte and 2HKOing Solid Rock Tirtouga. Substitute allows Torchic to safely pass to its teammates, even when faced with its checks. Baton Pass lets Torchic pass its Speed boosts to its teammates—slow, hard-hitting Pokemon in particular—and is great offensive support.

Set Details
========

Life Orb, maximum EVs in Special Attack, and the Modest nature give Torchic a lot of power and help it deal damage much more effectively. It also has near-maximum Speed, reaching 14 Speed, to help it outspeed Omanyte before Shell Smash and a fully bulky Vullaby, even when it's unboosted. Its remaining EVs are put into Defense and Special Defense to raise each by one point, helping Torchic's survivability. Speed Boost allows Torchic to outspeed the entire unboosted metagame at +1 and almost every boosted sweeper at +2 or +3.

Usage Tips
========

Life Orb Torchic is most effective as a late-game cleaner and a generally good momentum gainer. Using Protect the first turn Torchic comes in can help it outspeed every non-unboosted Pokemon in Little Cup and will start off a potential sweep, although it is very predictable and opposing setup sweepers often will take advantage of this. Similarly, using Substitute on a predicted switch can help Torchic accrue set up its Speed boosts much more easily. Fire Blast is easily Torchic's most powerful move and should be used against all nonresistant non-resisting targets. If a Pokemon that can KO Torchic switches in, Baton Passing Speed boosts into a teammate that resists the predicted move is a good idea. Using Volt Switch or U-turn users to get Torchic in safely for a sweep can keep it from being KOed before it can do much, as it is rather frail. Baton Pass can be used to quickly get Torchic out of danger or pass boosts to another teammate. Torchic is fairly good at wearing its checks down by baiting them in, hitting them with a Fire Blast or Hidden Power Grass, and getting out quickly with a Baton Pass, although this should mostly be done in the early-game.

Team Options
========

Bulky attackers such as Timburr and Vullaby can wear down bulkier Pokemon for Torchic to clean up in the late-game. Entry hazard support from Dwebble or Ferroseed can help Torchic KO Onix, Magnemite, and other Sturdy users. Rapid Spin support from Staryu can help Torchic switch in more without fear of hazards, (AC) and their type synergy makes them a good core. Defog users and other Rapid Spin users, such as Vullaby and Sandshrew, (AC) can do this job as well, but neither has the synergy Staryu does. Slower, bulkier pivots such as Pancham, Mienfoo, and Berry Juice Chinchou can help Torchic get in unscathed. Slower sweepers, such as Timburr, Corphish, and even Dewpider, (AC) appreciate Torchic's boosts and can sweep off of them. Water-type checks such as Croagunk, Snivy, and Chinchou can be helpful, as Hidden Power Grass isn't too powerful. All of the Grass-type checks listed above also appreciate Speed boosts as well. Knock Off support from Mienfoo or Pawniard can help Torchic clean up late-game by crippling bulkier Pokemon.

Protect lets Torchic scout out opponents' moves and lets it boost its Speed. Curse lets Torchic boost its Attack and Defense, (AC) and since its Speed is passively boosted every turn, the drops from Curse don't matter. Swords Dance can be used over Curse to pass extra Attack and Speed, but the Defense gained from Curse can be hard to pass up. Will-O-Wisp can help cripple physical threats and can also let it Torchic set up easier. Flame Charge can be used as an attacking move to surprise Cottonee after Torchic is boosted and to pass extra Speed. Baton Pass lets Torchic pass all these boosts to its allies. Substitute helps Torchic set up on its threats more easily and, if kept up, can be passed along with stat boosts.

Set Details
========

196 Defense EVs, 36 Special Defense EVs, Eviolite, and an Impish nature allow Torchic to tank powerful hits from the likes of a Scald from Chinchou and bulky Staryu, as well as avoiding a 2HKO from Mienfoo most of the time. Berry Juice can be used as an alternative to Eviolite to help Torchic switch into Stealth Rock more without fainting, but it subsequently lacks the bulk it likes. The rest of its EVs are put into Speed and Attack, the former to help it set up before it gets a Speed boost and the latter to help Flame Charge hit harder if used. Speed Boost lets Torchic boost Speed passively.

Usage Tips
========

Setting up a Substitute, (RC) or just plain boosting with Curse or Swords Dance when a foe switches out can help Torchic get set up without wasting a turn on Protect. Usually, Torchic should use Protect against faster foes to gain a Speed boost; (ASC) however, when predicting a switch, setting up instead can surprise your opponent and greatly benefit your team. Torchic does best against passive Pokemon such as Ferroseed and Spritzee, as it can boost freely, so switching it into either is usually a good idea, although a Thunder Wave from the former can be troublesome. These Pokemon, as well as other Pokemon that which can't damage Torchic much, such as Larvesta and Ponyta, can be set up on easily. Leading with Torchic is generally not a good idea, as it cannot handle many other leads, namely Onix, Dwebble, and Staryu. However, if being used in large Baton Pass chains, it makes a good lead because as it can passively boost its Speed. Always be wary of setup sweepers that which can boost faster than Torchic, such as Omanyte, Shellder, Carvanha, and Snivy, as they can KO Torchic before it uses Baton Pass. Torchic isn't never a great switch-in, as it doesn't have great bulk. Also be careful of Z-Move users, such as Gastly, as they can break through Protect and potentially eliminate Torchic. When setting up, make sure Torchic is still healthy enough that it can survive long enough to do so. Remember to be wary of both priority and Taunt users, as the former can eliminate Torchic before it passes and the latter can completely stop it in its tracks.

Team Options
========

Any physical Pokemon that can sweep, especially ones that which can't boost their Speed, such as Swords Dance Corphish and or Timburr, appreciate Torchic's support greatly. Rapid Spin and Defog users, the most prominent being Staryu, Vullaby, and Drilbur, can clear hazards, letting Torchic switch in without losing too much HP. Baton Pass-chaining Pokemon such as Togepi and Mime Jr, even though they are both very niche, can together make one single extremely boosted Pokemon on your team. Rowlet as well can either participate in a Baton Pass chain or Defog away hazards for Torchic. Pokemon with Volt Switch or U-turn can help bring Torchic in without it losing HP. Answers to Ground-types, such as Pumpkaboo-XL, Staryu, and again, Cottonee, make good partners.

Certain boosting Z-Moves such as Hone Claws, Will-O-Wisp, and especially Mirror Move can give Torchic extra boosts, but the fact that they take up an item slot (with the a loss of Eviolite making Torchic it even frailer) and can only be used once a game make them extremely situational. Rock Slide can be used on the Life Orb set to hit Flying-types, such as Rufflet and Vullaby, and Fire-types, such as Ponyta and Larvesta. Using Flamethrower as an alternative to Fire Blast can give more reliable damage, but Torchic needs more power usually. Will-O-Wisp and Hone Claws can be used on Baton Pass chains to weaken physical attackers and to assist Rufflet, (AC) respectively, but they don't do much besides these niches.
