Venonat Revamp

Taken over from Santa Reuniclause, approved by @macle.

[OVERVIEW]

Venonat's niche lies in its extensive utility movepool, which includes Thief, Toxic Spikes, Morning Sun, and Sleep Powder. Compound Eyes makes Sleep Powder 97.5% accurate and a very reliable way to put opposing Pokemon to sleep. Venonat's typing gives it two 4x resistances to Fighting and Grass, but it also comes with weaknesses to Flying-, Fire-, Rock-, and Psychic-type attacks as well as a Stealth Rock. While Venonat has excellent support options, its offensive presence is very weak and shouldn't be relied on.

Moves
========

Toxic Spikes can wear down all Pokemon that are grounded and not Poison-type, and it also breaks Focus Sashes and Sturdy while putting a timer on setup sweepers. Sleep Powder allows Venonat to further support its team by taking an opposing Pokemon out of the battle for a while and giving Venonat free turns to set up Toxic Spikes. Signal Beam is Venonat's most consistent and powerful move. Alternativey, Giga Drain gives Venonat a small source of recovery and has better super effective coverage. Morning Sun gives Venonat a lot of longevity and works well with Eviolite. Thief should only be used with Berry Juice, as it allows Venonat to steal items after using its Berry Juice or getting hit by Knock Off.

Set Details
========

The given Speed EVs allow Venonat to reach 15 Speed, while the bulk EVs and Eviolite allow it to almost always survive an Acrobatics from Fletchling of the time. The remainder EVs are placed in Special Attack for a small boost in damage. The EVs also make sure Venonat has an odd HP number to take less damage from Stealth Rock. Berry Juice can be used to steal items along with Thief and lets Venonat switch in on Stealth Rock more times. Compound Eyes increases Sleep Powder's accuracy to 97.5%. Tinted Lens could be used to give Venonat more offensive presence, but it comes with the cost of missing Sleep Powder more often.

Usage Tips
========

Switch Venonat into Fighting- and Fairy-types to easily tank a hit and set up Toxic Spikes or put something to sleep. Venonat's primary role is to set up Toxic Spikes, so be aware of opposing grounded Poison-types, as they can absorb them. Venonat is not particularly useful late-game and should often be sacrificed early in the game, after setting up Toxic Spikes and putting something to sleep.

Team Options
========

Pawniard and Ghost-types such as Pumpkaboo make for good partners to discourage or prevent the foe from using Defog and Rapid Spin, respectively. Diglett and Gothita can trap opposing Poison-types that can absorb Toxic Spikes; Diglett can handle Stunky and Croagunk better, while Gothita works better against Foongus, and both of them do equally well against other Poison-types like Trubbish and Skrelp. Pokemon that can check Flying- and Fire-types make for good teammates, with Onix, Tirtouga, and Chinchou being particularly good for this because of their ability to check both. Pursuit trappers such as Stunky and Munchlax can stop Abra from posing too much of a threat to Venonat. Pokemon that appreciate the Toxic Spikes support like Venoshock + Hex Gastly and walls such as Spritzee and Porygon are also good teammates. Hard hitters and sweepers, such as Carvanha, also synergize well with Toxic Spikes because of the important chip damage it provides. Finally, Rapid Spin users like Drilbur and Staryu can help improve Venonat's longevity by removing Stealth Rock.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Venonat could use Stun Spore, but the opposing Pokemon are usually already poisoned or asleep. A set with Agility and Baton Pass could be used to set up a teammate for sweeping, but Torchic often does this better. Venoshock is another option to deal more damage, but Venonat lacks the power to make this worth using. Venonat learns Psychic, which could heavily damage Fighting- and Poison-types, but it's usually better to use utility moves.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Flying-types**: Vullaby can absorb Sleep Powder due to Overcoat and use Defog to clear away Toxic Spikes. Fletchling can OHKO Venonat before it can move with some prior damage or if Venonat is using Berry Juice.

**Foongus**: Venonat struggles to do any significant damage to Foongus, while Foongus eliminates Toxic Spikes every time it comes into play and is immune to Sleep Powder.

**Faster Psychic-types**: Faster Psychic-types such as Abra, Gothita, and Natu can all do massive damage or OHKO Venonat. Natu is particularly threatening, as it can bounce Sleep Powder and Toxic Spikes.

**Fast Taunt Users**: Mienfoo and Onix can use Taunt to prevent Venonat from setting up Toxic Spikes and using Sleep Powder, effectively stopping it.

**Fire-types**: Fire-types like Ponyta, Larvesta, and Houndour can OHKO Venonat before it can do anything, though they can be put to sleep on the switch.

**Grounded Poison-types**: Stunky, Skrelp, Croagunk, and Foongus can absorb Toxic Spikes. Skrelp also utilizes a RestTalk set occasionally, making it a good switch-in to Venonat's Sleep Powder.

Ready for the 3rd QC check.

I got rid of these two things from the checks and counters section:

**Stealth Rock**: Whittles down Venonat easily, making it more difficult to wall fighting types. This is somewhat mitigated by Morning Sun.

This felt pretty obvious and unnecessary. Venonat's SR weakness had already been mentioned previously.

**Faster Leads**: especially Onix and Dwebble, as they both have a good chance to OHKO Venonat. Onix can also Taunt Venonat. Aipom can also kill Eviolite Veno with Fake Out+Fury Swipes, though Berry Juice lives it. Mienfoo, while effectively walled by Venonat, can easily switch out with U-turn into a counter. This does allow Venonat to get a free sleep powder or Toxic Spikes off, however.

I felt this implied Venonat was just a lead, but when I use Venonat I found its pretty rare that I actually lead with it. The important part of this section, Onix being able to taunt it, is already covered with another point.

Venonat's typing gives it two 4x resistances to Fighting and Grass, but it also comes with weaknesses to Flying-, Fire-, Rock-, and Psychic-type attacks as well as a Stealth Rock Rock. weakness. While Venonat has excellent support options, its offensive presence is very weak and shouldn't be relied on.

Moves
========

Thief should only be used with Berry Juice, as it allows Venonat to take steal items after using its Berry Juice or getting hit by Knock Off.

Set Details
========

The given Speed EVs allow Venonat to reach 15 Speed, while the bulk EVs and Eviolite allow it to almost always survive an Acrobatics from Fletchling 93.7% of the time. The remainder of the EVs are placed in Special Attack for a small boost in damage.

Usage Tips
========

========

Pawniard and Ghost-types such as Pumpkaboo make for good partners to discourage or prevent the opponent foe from using Defog or and Rapid Spin, respectively. Diglett and Gothita can trap opposing Poison-types that can absorb Toxic Spikes; Diglett can handle Stunky and Croagunk better, while Gothita works better against Foongus, and both of them do equally well against other Poison-types like Trubbish and Skrelp. Pokemon that can check Flying- and Fire-types make for good teammates, and with Onix, Tirtouga, and Chinchou are being particularly good for this because of their ability to check both.

Other Options
=============

===================

**Grounded Poison-types**: Stunky, Skrelp, Croagunk, and the aforementioned Foongus can absorb Toxic Spikes. Skrelp also utilizes a RestTalk set occasionally, making it a good switch-in to Venonat's Sleep Powder.
