Project Victim of the Week

Soft Counter: Cleric Blissey

Blissey @ Leftovers
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Def / 252 SpD
Bold Nature
- Soft-Boiled
- Heal Bell
- Thunder Wave/Protect
- Seismic Toss

Here we have again Blissey, which is generally overshadowed by its bulkier sister Chansey but the utility granted by Leftover sometimes makes the difference.

Blissey Seismic Toss vs. 248 HP Heatran: 100-100 (25.9 - 25.9%) -- guaranteed 5HKO after Heatran's Leftovers recover (otherwise is a 4HKO)
Heal Bell removes the poison while Leftovers helps the longevity.

Heatran can Taunt (its best move) but the pink blob can still work very well because it has to resist the turn of the switch plus the 5 turns to do 5 times Seismic Toss:
0 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 4 HP / 252 SpD Blissey: 87-103 (13.3 - 15.7%) -- possibly the worst move ever
(Solarbeam does less)

Calcs:
on the switch Leftovers Heatran does at max 15,7% + 12,5% (residual damage) - 6% from Leftovers ===> 22,2% HP lost

(turn 1) Heatran uses Taunt to prevent Blissey from using Sofboiled. Blisseys does Seismic Toss (now, she loses 6,5% HP = remains at 100%-28,7%=71,3%).
(turn 2) Heatran attacks with Magma Storm (22,2% HP lost including Leftovers). Blisseys does Seismic Toss.
(turn 3) Heatran attacks with Magma Storm (22,2% HP lost including Leftovers ==> Blissey is at 29,6%). Blisseys does Seismic Toss. Taunt ends.
(turn 4) Heatran uses Taunt to prevent Blissey from using Sofboiled; now, the pink blob loses 6,5% HP = remains at 23,1%). Blisseys does Seismic Toss.
(turn 5) Heatran attacks with Magma Storm (22,2% HP lost including Leftovers ==> Blissey is at 0,9%). Blissey wins with the final attack.

Very close and Taunt from Heatran is clearly the best move it can do because forces Blissey to 50-50 situation between Softboiled and Seismic Toss. In a real scenario, Blissey can use Thunder Wave/Protect to prevent the direct damage of Magma Storm with the aid of this low accuracy move, thus ensuring the loss of Heatran.

If you just shift 20 EVs from SpD into HP you can hit a leftovers number.
Yes, but the damage output from Heatran is 0,2% higher in this case ==> Blissey will lose. (Am I missing something?)

CroCune as a hard counter.

Suicune @ Leftovers
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Scald
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Heatran can't 2HKO Suicune unless it has a 2nd power herb:

252 SpA Heatran Solar Beam vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Suicune: 232-274 (57.4 - 67.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Suicune can set up all over Heatran, or 2HKO with Scald.

0 SpA Suicune Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Heatran: 152-180 (47 - 55.7%) -- 69.9% chance to 2HKO

Pepe The Frog
Pepe The Frog (Politoed) @ Leftovers
Ability: Drizzle
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 224 SpD
Calm Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Encore
- Ice Beam
- Toxic

Politoed is a solid counter to Magma Storm Heatran for multiple reasons. Firstly, the factor of being the only pokemon outside of Ubers to have access to the ability Drizzle makes it an amazing switch-in to Heatran since it powers up it's super effective water moves and that it makes any fire attack it uses useless. I decided to run Hydro Pump since it guarantees a OHKO after Stealth Rocks, which Scald cannot do. It forces a switch 99% of the time, in which you can drop a Toxic on potential partners strong electric attacker like Mega Manetric or Raikou, or a specially defensive wall like Clefable or Mew. You can also use Ice Beam if you're predicting a switch-in like a Lati twin or a grass type like Breloom or Serperior.

Here are some calcs for Heatran vs Politoed

0 SpA Politoed Hydro Pump vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Heatran in Rain: 312-368 (96.5 - 113.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 248 HP / 224+ SpD Politoed in Rain: 29-35 (7.5 - 9.1%) -- possibly the worst move ever
252 SpA Heatran Solar Beam (60 BP) vs. 248 HP / 224+ SpD Politoed in Rain: 98-116 (25.5 - 30.2%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

In total, Politoed is a very capable switch in that can change the tides (bad pun) of the battle in your favor, especially against an opposing weather team like sun or sand, which Politoed also cripples.

Venusaur @ Venusaurite
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 200 HP / 252 SpA / 56 Spe
Modest Nature
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Earthquake
- Synthesis

This can pop the potential balloon on switch-in with Giga Drain and proceed to dent Heatran as it attacks into your Thick Fat.

0- Atk Mega Venusaur Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Heatran: 248-292 (76.7 - 90.4%) -- 18.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Sub CM Keldeo as a Counter to the set without Solarbeam.

Keldeo-Resolute @ Leftovers
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Scald
- Substitute
- Calm Mind
- Secret Sword

Keldeo is able to counter Heatran lacking Solarbeam, able to avoid being 3HKOed by any of its other moves.

252 SpA Heatran Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Keldeo: 107-127 (33.1 - 39.3%) -- 13.7% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Keldeo: 89-105 (27.5 - 32.5%) -- 71.3% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Keldeo Secret Sword vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 264-312 (81.7 - 96.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Hard Counter: RestTalk Defensive Pivot Mega Garchomp

Now, Mega Garchomp is normally seen as a super-powerful wallbreaker (4 attacks set, can be mixed) or a sweeper (SD). This is a different beast, one that focuses on being a fat wall that hits harder than ScarfChomp with 0 attack investment that also shuffles things with Dragon Tail.

I posted this set in Creative and Underrated Sets, where I show how this checks/counters a hell of a lot of meta Pokemon, and provides general team utility (plus a bunch more calcs), but let's get on to countering Magma Storm Heatran.

Garchomp-Mega (M) @ Garchompite
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 HP / 176 Def / 76 SpD / 4 Spe
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Dragon Tail
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

What can this version of Heatran do to you?

252 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 252 HP / 76 SpD Mega Garchomp: 79-93 (18.8 - 22.1%) -- guaranteed 5HKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Heatran Earth Power vs. 252 HP / 76 SpD Mega Garchomp: 95-112 (22.6 - 26.6%) -- 96.9% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock (Earth Power is sometimes seen on Offensive Heatran to nail other Heatran)
252 SpA Heatran Solar Beam vs. 252 HP / 76 SpD Mega Garchomp: 126-149 (30 - 35.4%) -- 94.1% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock

As you can see, you can switch in at half health with rocks up on your side and STILL have a good chance to win, even though Heatran outspeeds you.

But let's say this is a weird, even more offensive Heatran that's really ballsy and runs Life Orb+Solar Beam, hoping to catch you/Rotom-Washes and things like that on the switch, and forgoes Taunt and Toxic (which do nothing against this set, since you force it out/kill it and can Rest off the Toxic at some point, even switching into Heatran while Toxic'd at a later point since it can't seriously threatening you if you're above half).

252+ SpA Life Orb Heatran Magma Storm vs. 252 HP / 76 SpD Mega Garchomp: 113-133 (26.9 - 31.6%) -- 0.5% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock
252+ SpA Life Orb Heatran Solar Beam vs. 252 HP / 76 SpD Mega Garchomp: 181-213 (43 - 50.7%) -- 3.1% chance to 2HKO (with rocks, it's a 50% chance)
252+ SpA Life Orb Heatran Earth Power vs. 252 HP / 76 SpD Mega Garchomp: 135-160 (32.1 - 38%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock

Yea. You still win even when not at full, and even in the worst case scenarios.

As for what you do back, it should be obvious....but just in case.

0 Atk burned Mega Garchomp Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 326-386 (100.9 - 119.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Yea, even burned and with no Sand Force Active and 0 Attack investment, you cleanly OHKO this version of Heatran. If it's carrying Air Balloon for some reason, you pop it with Dragon Tail then EQ.

Check

Terrakion @ Life Orb
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Stone Edge
- Swords Dance
- Rock Polish

Terrakion can switch into any move that heatran wants to go for, including earth power, although solarbeam has a chance to KO. Then, Terrakion can follow up by OHKOing Heatran with close combat.

Name: Dugtrio
Status: Check

Dugtrio @ Focus Sash
Ability: Arena Trap
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Earthquake
- Reversal
- Memento
- Stealth Rock

Dugtrio needs a free switch-in against Heatran as it's Sash will get popped by Magma Storm and dies to the trapping damage. However, it switches into any other move, then Dugtrio can trap and eliminate Heatran unless Heatran happens to carry an Air Balloon.

Mega Aerodactyl as Check

Aerodactyl @ Aerodactylite
Ability: Unnerve
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stone Edge
- Aerial Ace
- Aqua Tail
- Earthquake

Freely switches into either Taunt or Earth Power and easily survives Magma Storm and Solar Beam (can be 2HKOed with SR support if it hasn't Mega'd yet), while Earthquake sends it back to its fire hell (Aerial Ace + EQ and Aqua Tail get rid of Balloon variants).

252 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Aerodactyl: 85-101 (28.2 - 33.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Heatran Solar Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Aerodactyl: 137-162 (45.5 - 53.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

252 Atk Mega Aerodactyl Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 428-504 (132.5 - 156%) -- guaranteed OHKO
If you want to try your luck:
252 Atk Tough Claws Mega Aerodactyl Aqua Tail vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 250-296 (77.3 - 91.6%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

AraEDIT: Nice to see you back here SP458 :D
