Moves
========
Brave Bird hits anything that doesn't resist it hard thanks to its high Base Power and provides Vullaby with a reliable Flying-type STAB move. Knock Off allows Vullaby to deal large amounts of damage to most Rock- and Electric- types that resist Brave Bird, while also allowing it to deprive Pokemon of their items, specifically Eviolite, to weaken them for later in the battle. U-turn enables Vullaby to pivot out of battle while denting whatever switches in to it. The last moveslot is between Rock Smash and Heat Wave. Rock Smash allows Vullaby to 2HKO Pawniard on the switch, while Heat Wave, even without investment, lets it 2HKO Ferroseed. Both options also serve to hit Magnemite in a pinch. Defog is also an option in the last slot, and it allows Vullaby to bluff a defensive set, but it does not synergize well with Vullaby's Stealth Rock weakness.

Set Details
========
The given Speed EVs, along with a Jolly nature, allow Vullaby to reach 16 Speed and thus outspeed other key threats, such as Choice Scarf Gothita and Magnemite and +1 Scraggy, as well as Speed tie with Modest Scarf Chinchou and +1 Carvanha. The rest of the EVs are put into Attack to maximize Vullaby's damage output, and in Special Defense to boost Vullaby's bulk. Adamant can also be run, if you don't mind Speed tying with the above threats, to give Vullaby much more power. With an Adamant nature, Vullaby gets an almost guaranteed OHKO on Mienfoo after Stealth Rock and is able to 2HKO Download Porygon after Stealth Rock with Brave Bird. Overcoat is used to allow Vullaby to freely switch in on powder moves from the likes of Foongus. Big Pecks can be run to stop Attack drops from Intimidate, which helps with Snubbull switch-ins, especially Eviolite variants, but isn't really worth it apart from that.

Usage Tips
========
The lack of an Eviolite or significant defensive investment means that Vullaby should not be switching into super effective, or even powerful neutral attacks. Most people will not expect Vullaby to be equipped with a Choice Scarf, so this set can be used to surprise weakened faster Pokemon that think they can get a KO on Vullaby, such as Chinchou or Archen. Vullaby doesn't outright OHKO most Fighting-types, so chip damage is essential to secure these surprise KOs. Early-game, Vullaby should use Knock Off and U-turn to weaken its checks and Rock Smash or Heat Wave to surprise Pawniard or Ferroseed, respectively, on the switch. Vullaby should only lock itself into Rock Smash or Heat Wave when you know the appropriate check is coming in, as these moves are relatively weak otherwise. Later in the game when Flying-type checks have been worn down, Vullaby can begin to spam Brave Bird to deal large amounts of damage to an opponent's team.

Team Options
========
Due to its Stealth Rock weakness, Choice Scarf Vullaby appreciates Rapid Spin support. Drilbur is a good partner because it can also check the Electric-types that give Vullaby trouble and set up Stealth Rock to help Vullaby get KOs. Tentacool has good defensive synergy with Vullaby, aside from the fact that they share an Electric-type weakness, and can be a good teammate as well. Because of its Stealth Rock weakness and Brave Bird recoil damage, Vullaby is apt to get worn down very quickly in matches. Because of this, Wish passers, such as Spritzee and Lickitung, are good partners. Lickitung has the added bonus of taking most Ice- and Electric-type attacks aimed at Vullaby quite well. Diglett can trap many of the Rock-, Steel-, and Electric-types that stop Vullaby cold, including Pawniard, Chinchou, and non-Choice Scarf variants of Magnemite. Stealth Rock is essential to help Vullaby secure KOs, making Tirtouga and Pawniard good partners. These Pokemon also benefit from Choice Scarf Vullaby's luring abilities. Lastly, Pokemon with similar checks to Vullaby appreciate this set weakening the Rock- and Steel-types it draws in with Knock Off. These Pokemon include Gastly, which especially enjoys having Pawniard weakened, and Fletchling, with which Vullaby can form a Flying spam core.

dear Nineage,

greetings and salutations!

i would like to preface this by saying that you are a very intelligent person and a very good friend. because of your good friendliness, i would like to point out an oversight of yours. i do not wish for your good name to be soiled by a moment of ignorance.

if i were you (which i am not ! but that would be pretty cool to be inside your head for a day or two. i bet i would think VERY interesting thoughts.) i would mention rock smash as an option over hidden power fighting. rock smash lets you get essentially the same damage, but it is a physical attack so you do not have to sacrifice bulk with a hasty nature!

here is a damage calculation:
236 Atk Vullaby Rock Smash vs. 0 HP / 36 Def Eviolite Pawniard: 12-16 (57.1 - 76.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
(12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 16)
80- SpA Vullaby Hidden Power Fighting vs. 0 HP / 116 SpD Eviolite Pawniard: 12-16 (57.1 - 76.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
(12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 16)

as you can see (see is such a peculiar word- it has two homophones, "c" and "sea." there are only around forty homophone triplets in the english language!) they do the same damage to pawniard. pawniard is the primary target of a fighting type attack from vullaby, as stated in your work-in-progress analysis. if you run rock smash, though, you have more bulk! this is good because vullaby appreciates being able to switch in on pokemon and not be totally reliant on slow u-turns or other free switchins.

i hope the rest of your day is wonderful!

thank you for your time,

Infamy

p.s. we should build more tangma teams together ! it is a very fun metagame and i like to build teams in it and to play in it.

p.p.s. i am very sorry to hear about your brace falling out !

i have a brace on my hand right now. it is my right hand. by that i mean the hand of mine that is attached to the side of my body that is not the left side. i did not mean to say that one of my hands was more ethically correct than the other. i broke my hand wrestling.

i remember when i had braces. i broke off several braces eating milky ways that i had put in the freezer. they were delicious. i have no regrets.

Move set:
Would a Naive nature be better? This allows for Vullaby to take Fletch's acro and Phish's jet after a Brave Bird + SR.
200 Speed EVs & 80 SpD EVs are needed if HP fighting.
Is 76 SpD really more important than maximizing attack? I frankly don't know because I haven't sighted through a bunch of calcs, but I'd assume not. If nothing important appears, make the set have 80 in Defense.
I also question if 156 Attack is the right investment, some quick calcs show some changes of OHKO% vs Foongus and Mienfoo after sr when 236 is invested. Plus the added bulk seems unneeded. Some me some calcs were it is important to have the bulk (ex: avoids OHKO after 2 sr switch ins for fletch w/ the defense but not really important because of spinners/brave bird making it an unlikely scenario)

Usage Tips:
Non-adamant Vullaby doesn't actually OHKO fighters (236 Jolly needs sr for Eviolite Mienfoo), so mention needing chip damage on most Pokemon to outright OHKO when you're trying for a surprise with Scarf Vullaby.

Team options:
Mention Wish passers since Vullaby gets worn down stupidly quickly.
Vullaby practically needs SR to help secure 2HKOes/OHKOes, mention things like Pawniard and Tirtouga who like Scarf Vulla's lure abilities and ability to weaken a lot of irksome stuff and set up sr.

Rock Smash should be at the very least OO imo.

Just a few comments:
  • The current spread on this set is subpar. You have enough EVs to run 236 Atk / 76 SpD / 196 Spe.
  • HP [Fighting] is pretty poor on Scarf Vulla in general; Rock Smash hits every target just as hard, doesn't ruin the EV spread, and lets you run Adamant / Jolly (extra 2 Def points are huge). Heat Wave probably still wants a non-SpA lowering nature though since it's key in a lot of rolls vs Pawn and Ferro, but it still easily 2HKOs Ferro with -SpA natures, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (no comment on Naive vs Hasty; I only run Jolly / Adamant).
  • Mention Adamant in set details since the power boost is huge (75% vs 6.3% chance to OHKO Foo, 2HKOs DL Pory after SR, etc).
  • Explain why you'd want to use this over Scarf Pawn or Fletch (not fighting weak, U-Turn, Flying STAB vs Pawn. Knock Off, defensive utility+bulk vs Fletch).

Not sure where to put this since its just one set and not an analysis. The beginning of set details?

Fiend ZoroarkForever, sparktrain was saying that Hidden Power Fighting gets very similar rolls to Rock Smash on Pawniard and Magnemite, even without investment and SpA lowering nature, while not having the side effect of giving a +2 to Pawniard 50% of the time, which can make the difference between being picked off by Sucker. I agree, but I wanted to know if either of you had an objection to me changing it back.

OOPS, the IV drops mess up the EV spread. Disregard this post.

Set Details
- Hasty -> Jolly
- Wouldn't hurt to be more specific with what each ability accomplishes. Overcoat most importantly provides an answer to Foongus's Spore. Big Pecks mainly helps w/ Snubbull switch-ins, especially Eviolite variants (BJ not so much unfortunately), but isn't really worth it outside of that. Weak Armor just seems useless on this set so I'd remove that.

Usage Tips
- I dunno if it's good to encourage locking Vullaby into a move like Rock Smash early-game. It's helpful in specific luring scenarios, but it's kind of a crappy move to be locked into and is easily punished due to low BP, so imo just add a point stressing to be wary of opposing threats that can potentially take advantage of Vullaby after it locks itself into either of the slot 4 moves.

solid, QC 2/3

MOstly pretty good, a few things:

Moves:
-Defog is a viable option on this set for fast hazard removal if you can't fit it anywhere else and may make people think the set is defensive; however, it kills momentum and dooesn't synergize well with Vullaby's Stealth Rock weaknesss. I think it does deserve a mention though.

Set Details:
-Scarf Mienfoo typically runs 17 Speed, so don't mention it. I would mention Modest Scarfchou though.
-Mention why Special Defense EVs are run over Defense.

Usage tips:
-"Vullaby should be careful when locking itself into any one move early game, especially the last two, because it then becomes setup bait for Pokemon that resist it." This sentence should be reworded, as Vullaby won't usually be staying in for more than one turn early game. Do say that Rock Smash and Heat Wave should only be used if you know your opponent will go to the respective mon that they lure.

Set Details:
-Stealth rocks --> Stealth Rock
