[OVERVIEW]

Whimsicott is the fastest Pokemon with the ability Prankster; this, coupled with its expansive support movepool, makes it a niche choice for a disrupter and Tailwind setter. However, Whimsicott has a myriad of flaws that can hold it back from performing its role in the Doubles OU metagame. For starters, Whimsicott has almost no offensive presence, leaving it able to do real damage only against targets that are weak to its STAB moves. Whimsicott's defenses are also lackluster, forcing it to equip a Focus Sash and making it tough for it to stay on the field and perform its role for more than a couple of turns. Furthermore, Whimsicott's typing is not very good defensively, as it is weak to common Ice-, Fire-, and Flying-type moves. Finally, Whimsicott is almost wholly outclassed by Thundurus and Talonflame. Thundurus also has Prankster but, unlike Whimsicott, also boasts a good typing and offenses, while Talonflame has priority Tailwind and a great offensive presence.

Moves
========

Moonblast is Whimsicott's best STAB move, which offers coverage against Fighting-types such as Conkeldurr, Dark-types such as Weavile, and Dragon-types such as Latios. Energy Ball is another option for a STAB attack, as it can damage Water-types such as Suicune and Rock-types such as Rhyperior. Encore gives Whimsicott the ability to lock an opposing Pokemon into an unfavorable move, such as Fake Out, Protect, Trick Room, or Substitute. Tailwind provides speed control by doubling the Speed of all allies, and Whimsicott can set Tailwind reliably at least once per game thanks to Prankster. Protect helps Whimsicott scout to see if it wants to Encore the foe the next turn. For example, if the opponent uses Fake Out, Protect can shield Whimsicott from damage and allow it to Encore the opponent the following turn. It is also useful for stalling out opposing speed control and shielding Whimsicott from damage and move disruption while its partner deals with a threat. Fake Tears can allow Whimsicott to help a specially-attacking partner take out foes it normally would not be able to, thanks to the Special Defense drop. Taunt can also be used to stop other Prankster users, most notably Thundurus, from firing off disruptive moves. It can also be used to stop support moves from other Pokemon, such as sleep moves, redirection, setup moves, and speed control.

Set Details
========

Giving Whimsicott 216 Speed EVs and a Timid nature allows it to outspeed maximum Speed Thundurus, which is vitally important because Thundurus is the most relevant Prankster Pokemon in Doubles OU. 96 Special Attack EVs make sure Whimsicott always OHKOes 252 HP Scrafty with Moonblast. If using Energy Ball, move the Special Attack EVs into HP and Defense, as there is no relevant offensive benchmark for this move. The leftover EVs are placed in HP to allow Whimsicott to take as many hits as possible. Focus Sash allows Whimsicott to survive any one hit, which makes it its best item choice because Whimsicott's defensive stats are so poor and it will often find itself at the mercy of strong and super effective attacks. Prankster boosts the priority of Whimsicott's utility moves, allowing Whimsicott to disrupt its foes before they have a chance to move.

Usage Tips
========

Whimsicott works well as a lead to beat opposing Fake Out users and speed control Pokemon with Encore or Taunt, or to set up Tailwind for its own team. Whimsicott can use Protect on opposing Fake Outs and then Encore the Fake Out user the next turn. Keep in mind that other players may be wary of an incoming Encore and may switch out the target Pokemon to avoid this. It is okay for Whimsicott to stay in on a strong attacker such as Talonflame if Whimsicott is at full health and desperately needs to get off a support move. Whimsicott is not supposed to be filling an attacking role; as such, it should only attack when none of its support moves would be useful or when it can take out an opposing Pokemon that is weak to its STAB attack, such as Scrafty or Gastrodon depending on your choice in STAB move.

Team Options
========

A fantastic Pokemon to pair with Whimsicott is Mega Gengar. Trapping is incredibly valuable for Whimsicott, as it can Encore or Taunt opposing Pokemon while Gengar forces them to stay in. Disable is a fantastic move on a Mega Gengar that is paired with Whimsicott, as it allows you to Encore and Disable an opposing Pokemon into one move on the same turn, forcing it to Struggle and preventing it from switching out. Pokemon that appreciate the Speed boost of Tailwind are great partners for Whimsicott, as it is very good at setting Tailwind at least once per game. Strong attackers with middling Speed tiers, such as Mega Kangaskhan, Hoopa-U, and Heatran, are good choices in partners. Whimsicott needs to be paired with Pokemon that beat common Fire-types such as Heatran and Talonflame, as they are huge threats to Whimsicott. Landorus-T and Rotom-W do extremely well against the previously mentioned Pokemon. Steel-type Pokemon are also extremely threatening to Whimsicott. Aegislash and Mega Metagross are particularly threatening, which makes Heatran and Landorus-T great options to add to the team. If Whimsicott is using Fake Tears, strong special attackers, such as Sylveon, Mega Charizard Y, and Mega Gengar, benefit greatly from the Special Defense drop.

Other Options
=============

Beat Up can set you up for a big sweep when used on a partner that has Justified, usually Terrakion, but this is a very situational play and one that many players will see coming. It also limits both Whimsicott, which could be using a more useful move than Beat Up, and the team, which might not be optimal with Terrakion, the only viable Beat Up recipient. Helping Hand allows Whimsicott to boost the power of a partner's move, but it is fairly situational and outclassed by Whimsicott's other moves. Swagger can be used to confuse special attackers and increase the damage they may do to themselves—this is especially good against Aegislash, as it will be in Blade forme when confusion activates. Charm is helpful for weakening the power of physical attackers and providing your other Pokemon a chance to set up against a weakened foe. It should only be used on teams that are very weak to physical attackers like Mega Kangaskhan, as this move is, like most moves on this list, fairly situational. Sitrus Berry is an item option that allows Whimsicott to have some reliable recovery and avoid a notable OHKO from Mega Kangaskhan, but Focus Sash is generally preferred because Whimsicott wants to make sure it always survives strong attacks from the likes of Talonflame and Kyurem-B. An offensive set with Life Orb and maximum Speed and Special Attack investment can be used as well; the combination of Grass and Fairy coverage with support moves gives it a niche. Even with all of this, however, Whimsicott's damage output is fairly low; therefore, this set is outclassed by many of the other common offensive Grass-types, such as Serperior, Venusaur, and Breloom.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fire-type Pokemon**: Fire-types, such as Heatran and Talonflame, resist both Fairy- and Grass-type attacks and can OHKO or do a lot of damage to Whimsicott.

**Steel-type Pokemon**: Steel-types resist both Grass- and Fairy-type attacks and can take out Whimsicott. The notable threat here is Aegislash, although Whimsicott can Taunt or Encore Aegislash into King's Shield or Substitute. Other dangerous Steel-types include Mega Metagross and Ferrothorn.

**Ice-type Pokemon**: Kyurem-B and Mega Abomasnow are large threats to Whimsicott, and although Whimsicott can Encore Kyurem-B into Substitute, most Kyurem will just use Ice Beam on Whimsicott. Weavile can also break down Whimsicott through Fake Out and Ice Shard, which move before Whimsicott's status moves.

**Taunt**: Even though Whimsicott is the fastest Prankster Taunt user in the game, it still gets shut down by a Taunt from Pokemon such as Thundurus, and without its ability to use support moves, Whimsicott is a near-worthless Pokemon.

**Quick Guard**: Quick Guard totally shuts down Whimsicott's targeted Prankster moves, which is most of the set's arsenal. It can still use Tailwind and attack, but without the ability to use Encore, Taunt, or Fake Tears, Whimsicott's ability to disrupt is weakened considerably.

this is a very whimsical analysis wow so punny i'm the best

Talked it over with QC, and this is the set we're recommending, which I will explain in my check:

name: Prankster
move 1: Moonblast / Energy Ball
move 2: Encore
move 3: Tailwind
move 4: Protect / Fake Tears
item: Focus Sash
ability: Prankster
nature: Timid
evs: 172 HP / 100 SpA / 216 Spe

Since we're recommending a set change, I'm gonna have lots to say, so don't get discouraged by the length of this check.

Overview:
  • Replace the word "Taunt" with "Encore" in the first bullet point
  • Mention something about it being frail - the fact that we can't even find a spread that lives Mega Kang Return is pretty sad for a support mon
Set: Just copy and paste what I have above

Moves:

  • Change order to reflect new set
  • Energy Ball > Giga Drain because the recovery that it provides is basically nothing and you need Energy Ball's damage for a few rolls such as the 2HKO on Rotom-W and the 3HKO on bulky Sitrus Politoed.
  • Taunt can get a mention right before Protect, as it's more viable than the rest of OO, but not quite good enough to give it a slash
  • Protect gets a special mention on Whims that it can be used to scout moves in order to decide whether to click Encore, so make sure you talk about that in writeup.
Set Details:
  • Outspeeds max Thund, OHKOs 252/0 non-AV Scrafty, rest in HP
Usage Tips:
  • Whimsicott should only attack when absolutely necessary or when facing something with a 4x weakness to its STAB of choice, otherwise it's better off using a support move
  • Protect should be used to shield Whims from Fake Out and preserve its Focus Sash, allowing you to safely go for Encore the next turn
  • Avoid switching in on attacks as Whimsicott needs its Focus Sash intact if at all possible
Team Options:
  • If running Fake Tears, strong special attackers really appreciate Whimsicott's presence, especially spread ones such as Mega Charizard Y or Heatran
  • Anything that appreciates Tailwind support, as Whimsicott is quite reliable in setting Tailwind at least once (Hoopa-U, Volcanion come to mind, feel free to add others)
  • Fake Out users to force opponents to either take the flinch or get Encore'd into Protect (Mega Kangaskhan, Infernape)
Other Options:
  • Points should be in this order: Beat Up / Helping Hand / Swagger / Charm / Sunny Day / Sitrus / Offensive
  • Charm is kind of an emergency button, appreciated by setup attacking teammates as it gives them more leeway to set up
  • Sunny Day is nice on extremely sun-based teams, teams that have a really rough Rain matchup, or to boost Heatran's Heat Waves
  • Sitrus is sometimes nice if not running Protect, as your Focus Sash is far more likely to be broken
Checks and Counters:
  • **Steel-type Pokemon**
  • Give Weavile a mention in **Ice-type Pokemon**, it can use Fake Out to potentially break its Sash and Ice Shard to outprioritize any following Encore
  • **Quick Guard** doesn't shut down all priority moves, just the ones that affect the opponent, so Whimsicott can still set Tailwind. Make sure that you don't insinuate otherwise.
Since there's a set change involved, I'm not gonna give a stamp just yet, but hmu when this is implemented and I'll give it another look

Fair enough, idk why I trusted the calc's "One vs All" tab to have the right spreads. Change to 176 HP / 96 SpA / 216 Spe and make corresponding changes in the Usage Tips section.

Just a couple more things in Set Details real quick:
  • Explain that it's EVd to outspeed Thundurus because Thundurus also has Prankster. If you can catch an offensive Thundurus on a Protect, then you definitely want to be able to Encore it instead of getting paralyzed.
  • If using Energy Ball, the SpA EVs should be moved to HP, as there is no relevant offensive benchmark associated with the move. In fact, having 0 SpA means that Energy Ball has a chance to do less than 50% to Azu on a low roll, and more than 50% on a high roll, 2HKOing it and avoiding the Sitrus Berry activation. Don't write anything about the Azu situation as it's a little too specific for analyses, but just an interesting thing I noticed :]
Get those done and you're good for QC 1/3!

OV
  • Combine the first two bullet points, they just talk about the same thing really which is Cott's access to stuff. Just say that it has "a wide support movepool, including xyz," and when you mention Encore's usefulness, just say that it lets Cott deny certain plays or whatever instead of being that specific with the Encoring Pranksters thing.
  • Also, you don't really mention Whimsicott's specific niche in the metagame in your lead point. You only mention what it is and what it has access to, but this doesn't actually tell the whole story. In Whimsicott's case, it's best to have your lead point describe it as a "decent fast supporter with access to a good number of support moves such as Encore and Taunt" or whatever similar to that you can think of.
  • "Very little offensive presence, its STAB moves do pitiful damage" - this is true, but make sure to note that this is because of Cott's pitiful attacking stats; its STABs are actually good in terms of Base Power.
  • "Bad defensive typing, weak to common attack types such as Fire, Flying, and Ice" - give examples of Pokemon that Whimsicott is prey to because of said weaknesses, preferably once of high viability.
  • "Whimsicott is incredibly frail: Focus Sash allows it take one strong hit, but it should never be used to switch in on attacks, since its defensive stats are so poor." - telling that it should never be used because so so is pretty much usage tips material. What we put in an overview is what a mon is, isn't, can do, and can't do; not what it should and shouldn't do. Rephrase this to something like "Whimsicott is incredibly frail, necessitating the need for Focus Sash for it reliably be able to take two hits minimum" or something of that nature.
  • When you mention being outclassed by stuff you mentioned, make sure to say that it does have Encore tho!!!
Moves
  • When you write this up, you can just combine the two moves into the same sentence saying that both are usable STAB moves, with Moonblast having higher BP and better general coverage while EBall hitting xyz
  • When you mention what Taunt can prevent, just say that it can stop "support moves" first in order to give a more general idea before getting more specific. And when you instead of just saying Trick Room, say speed control.
Usage Tips
  • Use Protect on Whimsicott to preserve its incredibly valuable Focus Sash and scout for opposing moves it wants to Encore. - I don't want you stresssing the fact about preserving its Sash too much to the point of misplaying; say something about being fine to eat up Sash if needed.
  • "Whimsicott is by no means an attacker and should only attack when it can take out an opposing Pokemon or when it is faced with a foe that is 4x weak to its STAB move, like Hydreigon or Scrafty." - Whimsicott facing a foe with a 4x weakness is an example of when it can take out an opposing Pokemon; they're not different things so using "or" isn't that ideal here. "Such as" is more suitable.
Team Options
  • I'd rather you use "incredibly potent" instead of "good" on how you describe Mega Gar because ehhhhh
  • "Some Pokemon that operate well in Tailwind are Hoopa-U, Volcanion, Heatran, and Mega Kangaskhan. " - generally label these mons as your examples are obviously not the only ones fine to pick; by giving a category, the reader will know what kind of pokemon operate in Tailwind, giving them the info they need to be able to pick mons outside of your examples. Use a term as appropriate; "general hard hitters" looks fine here.
  • You don't really need a "check to ice mons" tag as cott isn't totally walled and most ices outside of kyu-b are uncommon, making a dedicated point unnecessary. and you have moonblast for kyu-b
OO
  • Also mention that Beat Up is a moveslot dedicated for only one specific partner, limiting Whimsicott a bit.
  • I'd rather you mention Venusaur instead of Virizion when u mention other grasses on the LO bit
C&C
  • Mega Metagross on steels bop dash

Tag me once implemented, so I can check over before giving 3/3.

Overview
  • Remove the mention of "4x" (weakness) as you still do decent damage to 2x weak Pokemon, even if you don't OHKO. What you're saying also implies that you only run an attack to hit the rare 4x weak Pokemon, which is wrong as you later show in the moves description.
Moves
  • Seems fine.
Set Details
  • "The leftover EVs are placed in Whimsicott to make the Pokemon as strong as possible." - Guessing that this is meant to say the leftover EVs are put into HP to help Whimsi survive longer.
Usage Tips
  • "Protect is a vital move on Whimsicott, as it is for most Pokemon in Doubles, as it allows Whimsicott to preserve its Focus Sash and to scout for moves, like Fake Out, that can be Encored safely." - Not necessary, more of a move description (which you've said this for), and you've already mentioned about how to use this (remove please).
  • Remove the bit again about only attacking 4x weak targets (keep the sentence up until that point though), and instead mention attacking in situations when none of its support moves would be useful.
  • "Make sure to use Whimsicott's support moves as efficiently as possible while it is on the field." - A bit of a useless sentence tbh, either make it clear what you're trying to say or just remove.
Team Options
  • Seems fine.
Other Options
  • "It further limits Whimsicott, and the users team, because using Beat Up forces the player into using Terrakion." - I get the point you're trying to make but you make it sound like Terrakion is this really sub-optimal pick that you're being forced into. Try and change it so you're more saying how it takes away a more useful move, and limits your team options as there's only one viable Beat Up recipient.
Checks and Counters
  • For the Ice-type Pokemon tag, mention how Moonblast can hit both of the relevant Ice-type Pokemon super effectively. The part of the first setence up until the comma is a bit strange, just say something like "Ice-type Pokemon such as Kyurem-B threaten Whimsicott," and in the second part change "Sub" to "Substitute". Also in the last setence change "out-prioritize" to "move before", as Ice Shard is the same priority as Whimsicott's prankster moves, it's due to having a higher speed that it moves first.

Encore gives Whimsicott the ability to lock an opposing Pokemon into an unfavorable move, such as Fake Out, Protect, Trick Room, or Substitute. Tailwind provides speed control by doubling the Speed of all allies, and due to Prankster Whimsicott can set Tailwind reliably at least once per game thanks to Prankster. ("due to" is generally used in a negative connotation, i.e. "We were forced to lay off half of our workforce due to budget cuts.") Protect helps Whimsicott wait and scout to see if it wants to Encore the foe the next turn.(end sentence) like if the opponent is going to use For example, if the opponent uses Fake Out,(AC) Protect can shield Whimsicott from damage and allow it to Encore the opponent the following turn. It is also useful for stalling out opposing speed control and shielding Whimsicott from damage and move disruption while its partner deals with a threat. Fake Tears,(RC) when Whimsicott is paired with a strong special attacker,(RC) can allow Whimsicott to help that Pokemon a specially-attacking partner take out foes it normally would not be able to, thanks to the Special Defense drop. Taunt can also be used to stop other Prankster users, most notably Thundurus, from firing off disruptive moves. It can also be used to stop support moves from other Pokemon, such as sleep moves, redirection, setup moves, and speed control.

Set Details
========

Giving Whimsicott 216 Speed EVs and a Timid nature allows it to outspeed maximum Speed Thundurus, which is vitally important because Thundurus is the most relevant Prankster user Pokemon (technically it doesn't "use" Prankster; it's more of a part of the Pokemon) in Doubles OU. Focus Sash is the best item choice for Whimsicott, allowing it allows Whimsicott to survive any one hit, and since Whimsicott's which makes it its best item choice because Whimsicott's defensive stats are so poor,(RC) and it will oftentimes often find itself at the mercy of strong and super effective attacks. Prankster boosts the priority of Whimsicott's utility moves, allowing Whimsicott to disrupt its foes before they have a chance to move.

Usage Tips
========

Whimsicott works well as a lead to beat opposing Fake Out users and speed control Pokemon with Encore or Taunt, or to set up Tailwind for its own team. Whimsicott can use Protect on opposing Fake Outs and then Encore the Fake Out user the next turn. Keep in mind that other players may be wary of an incoming Encore,(RC) and they may switch out the target Pokemon to avoid this. It is okay for Whimsicott to stay in on a strong attacker,(RC) like such as Talonflame,(RC) if Whimsicott is at full health and desperately needs to get off a support move. Whimsicott is by no stretch of the imagination not supposed to be filling an attacking role;(comma to semicolon) and as such, it should only attack when none of its support moves would be useful or when it can take out an opposing Pokemon that is weak to its STAB attack, such as Scrafty,(RC) or Gastrodon if Whimsicott is using Energy Ball depending on your choice in STAB move.

Team Options
========

A fantastic Pokemon to pair with Whimsicott is Mega Gengar. Trapping is incredibly valuable for Whimsicott, as it can Encore or Taunt opposing Pokemon while Gengar forces them to stay in. Disable is a fantastic move on a Mega Gengar that is paired with Whimsicott, allowing as it allows you to Encore and Disable an opposing Pokemon into one move on the same turn, forcing them it to Struggle and preventing them it from switching out. Pokemon that appreciate the Speed boost of Tailwind are great partners for Whimsicott, as it is very good at setting Tailwind at least once per game. Pokemon that are strong Strong attackers with middling Speed tiers, such as Mega Kangaskhan, Hoopa-U, and Heatran, are good choices to pair with Whimsicott in partners. (ending one sentence with "Whimsicott" and starting the next the same way sounds choppy) Whimsicott needs to be paired with Pokemon that beat ever-present common Fire-types like such as Heatran and Talonflame, as they are huge threats to Whimsicott. Pokemon like Landorus-T and Rotom-W do extremely well against the previously mentioned Pokemon. Another Pokemon type that is Steel-type Pokemon are also extremely threatening to Whimsicott is Steel. Aegislash and Mega Metagross are particularly threatening, so Pokemon like which makes Heatran and Landorus-T are great options to add to the team in order to beat Steel-types. If Whimsicott is using Fake Tears, strong special attackers,(AC) like such as Sylveon, Mega Charizard Y, and Mega Gengar,(AC) all benefit greatly from the Special Defense drop.

Other Options
=============

Beat Up,(RC) can set you up for a big sweep when used with on/against (leaving the choice of which word to use up to you; both sound fine to me but Doubles nomenclature escapes me. replaced "with" because it implies you are using it alongside your partner rather than targeting it) a partner that has Justified, usually Terrakion, can set you up for a big sweep, but this is a very situational play and one that many players will see coming from a mile away. It further also (further is ambiguous here) limits both Whimsicott, which could be using a more useful move than Beat Up,(AC) and the user's team, because using Beat Up forces the player into using a less useful move and which might not be optimal with Terrakion, the only viable Beat Up recipient. Charm is helpful for nerfing weakening the power of physical attackers and providing your set up users other Pokemon a chance to set up against a weakened foe. (aside from the bit on Beat Up, this section is very well-written. good job!)

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fire-type Pokemon**: Fire-types, like such as Heatran and Talonflame, resist both Fairy- and Grass-type attacks and can OHKO or do big a lot of damage to Whimsicott.

**Taunt**: Even though Whimsicott is the fastest Prankster Taunt user in the game, it still gets shut down by a Taunt from Pokemon like such as Thundurus, and without its ability to use support moves, Whimsicott is a near-worthless Pokemon.
