REUNION
by Electrolyte and Apt-Get
So the era of Sneasel is "finally" over. Me and Apt-Get made this team in the beginning of X&Y for Pokebank and it's been a solid standard for offensive style teambuilding in the meta every since. It has the famous and powerful Meditite / Swirlix / Gligar / Sneasel core, along with fun Sturdy + Berry Juice backup for sweeping and handling major threats of the metagame.by Electrolyte and Apt-Get

The team playstyle starts off usually with Sturdy + SSmash Tirtouga. I myself like to bring it in as a lead to ensure that its Sturdy is intact, but I know Apt-Get usually waits until later. Tirtouga is a pretty decent anti-lead in this meta where Fake Out and status leads are much less popular, and sets up quite easily and quite reliably. After Tirtouga smashes somethings, Gligar and Sneasel usually provide mid-game offense with their powerful attacks. Meditite is a multipurpose check that helps muscle past bulkier teams and Magnemite is a solid check to most of the new common threats of the meta. Swirlix then usually ends off the round with an Unburden + CM sweep once most of the opponent's Pokemon are weakened.
The power and solidity of the team come from the sheer amount of offensive power it has. Every single Pokemon on the team hits quite hard. Gligar and Sneasel provide fast, powerful blunt attacks, while 4 priority attacks spread through Gligar, Sneasel, and Meditite can check almost any sweeper in the tier. Most of the things that threaten this team defensively can just be battered to death with more offense, making this team very deadly.
Overall, this has been a fun team to play with to get a good taste of the new X&Y meta. It has a lot of powerful released threats, such as Gligar, Meditite, and Sneasel, old threats, such as Magnemite and Tirtouga, and one of the most popular new threats, Swirlix. It is a reunion of generations.
Here's a look at the team.
TEAM DESCRIPTIONS

TEAM DESCRIPTIONS

Manemite (Magnemite) @ Berry Juice
Ability: Sturdy
Level: 5
EVs: 220 Spd / 228 SAtk / 60 Def
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Grass]
- Flash Cannon
- Volt Switch
Magnemite was always a swell Pokemon ever since its release in Generation 1 and will always continue to be a swell Pokemon. In past generations, Magnet Pull has been its main niche- but this team uses Magnemite quite differently. Now that Berry Juice is legal, Magnemite can run a very effective Sturdy + Berry Juice bulky offensive checking set. It pretty much gets two hits at everything and three hits on things that it outspeeds, making it a very useful check to things that cannot be revenged by the team's priority.
Using its ability and its typing, Magnemite checks a slew of important things for this team. Its main job is to beat Swirlix, whom would otherwise smash this team easy endgame if it set up. Flash Cannon easily OHKOs unboosted Swirlix and can heavily dent +1 SpDef Swirlix as well, hitting it past its Berry Juice recovery range and putting an abrupt stop to its sweep. Mag also checks Sneasel to some extent, OHKOing it with Flash Cannon. I myself run HP Grass to check Chinchou but if you use HP Ice you can also surprise OHKO Gligar. Magnemite is not usually brought out unless there is something I need it to remove in the opponent's team, but it is still an important member of the team and definitely holds its own weight by cockblocking other offensive threats.
Prominent Roles:
Check to Fairies
Bulky Pivoter
Panic Button

Batman (Gligar) @ Berry Juice
Ability: Hyper Cutter
Level: 5
EVs: 236 Spd / 236 Atk
Jolly Nature
- Acrobatics
- Earthquake
- Defog
- Substitute
While not as good with Flying Gem illegal, Gligar is still one of the most annoying Pokémon in the tier. Its awesome physical bulk, excellent dual STAB, 19 speed tier, access to Defog, and itemless Acrobatics being one of the best attacks in the tier makes Gligar a must-have for the team. While it doesn't have Eviolite or Roost, Berry Juice and natural bulk allow it to shrug off most physical attacker's hits, as long as they aren't super effective. It's a big "fuck you" to fighting-types, forcing most of them to run Ice Punch or Hidden Power Ice, and that doesn't even OHKO in most cases (Croagunk, attack-less Timburr). Gligar is no offensive slouch either, as the combination of Earthquake and Acrobatics allows it to threaten most offensive threats. "But you need Berry Juice gone to activate Acrobatics' full power, and that might not always happen!" you may say, but that's when Substitute comes in handy. It prevents revenge killing, eases prediction, and activates Berry Juice easily.
Most of the time, I use Gligar early- or mid-game, as Hyper Cutter, great matchup against most leads, Defog, and Berry Juice if I predict wrong are all great tools available to Gligar, although saving it for late-game is an option either, as you might need a quick defog when the opposing hazard setter is dead. Knock Off isn't a problem for Gligar, as it just enables Acrobatics to be at full power, which is pretty good, considering most users of it are either Fighting-types, along with Pawniard, which is heavily threatened by Earthquake.
Prominent Roles:
Middle Finger @ Fighting types
Semi bulky physical wall
Steady attacker

Mantouga (Tirtouga) @ Berry Juice
Ability: Sturdy
Level: 5
EVs: 180 Spd / 212 Atk / 92 SAtk
Naive Nature
- Shell Smash
- Aqua Jet
- Stone Edge
- Ice Beam
The Pokemon I usually use as a lead. Tirtouga was a boss last gen and is even more manlier (idgaf) this generation, using a deadly combination of Sturdy + Shell Smash + Berry Juice to grab easy set ups and sweep through opposing teams. I use it as a lead (unless there are anti-SSmash leads on my opponent's team) and can often straight out 6-0 opponents without ever having to switch out. Tirtouga's first Sturdy guarantees it a turn of setup, and Berry Juice then heals it back to full, forcing the opponent to break through Sturdy again, just like with Magnemite. At +2, Tirtouga is really frightening. Stone Edge OHKOs most things even neutral to it, and Ice Beam hits the Ground-types and Bulky Grass-types that Stone Edge doesn't. Aqua Jet finishes off coverage with priority and a decently powerful Water-type STAB.
Personally I've always been shifting between coverage on Tirtouga's set. Occasionally I use AJet / Aqua Tail / Stone Edge just because Stone Edge misses all the damn time and Tirtouga needs to be able to hit Fighting-types, but Ice Beam works as well since this team lacks other reliable ways to hit Tangela and Gligar. Tirtouga is still awesome no matter what attack moves it has, however, since few things can stomach +2 STAB attacks easily, letting Tirtouga pave the way for its teammates to sweep.
Prominent Roles:
Wallbreaker
Sweeper
Revenge killer (occasionally)

Manlix (Swirlix) @ Berry Juice
Ability: Unburden
Level: 5
EVs: 204 Spd / 204 SAtk / 60 SDef / 20 HP
Modest Nature
- Calm Mind
- Dazzling Gleam
- Surf
- Flamethrower
While you may think Swirlix is nothing more than a cute Pokémon, this cotton candy is probably one of the most threatening attackers of gen 6. First, it has the coveted Fairy-type, which allows it to setup on most Fighting- and Dark-types. It also has great coverage, from Flamethrower to Surf, along with Thunderbolt and Psychic. But where Swirlix really shines is by abusing its ability, Unburden, which doubles its speed if it consumes an item. This means that by running Calm Mind and Berry Juice, you can just set up, recover your health, and then sweep without the fear of being revenge killed, thanks to a doubled Speed stat! Dazzling Gleam powers through everything in the tier after a boost or two, while Surf allows you to beat Fire-types such as Ponyta and Growlithe, while Flamethrower roasts Steel-types, like Ferroseed, Bronzor, or Magnemite with Stealth Rock.
Swirlix is great late-game, as your opponent's checks to Swirlix will probably be weakened enough to sweep. Berry Juice ensures that it can also function as a check to some offensive Pokémon like Meditite or Sneasel, as long as they aren't running Poison Jab. It can even sweep without any boost, as the broad coverage it has ensures that anything that is hit super effectively will take a lot. The bulk investment allows it to take most physical hits better, such as Gligar's Earthquake, or Life Orb Meditite's Bullet Punch. Draining Kiss is an option over Dazzling Gleam for recovery, but it's kinda weak.
Prominent Roles:
Cleaner
Sweeper
Bulky setup attacker
Wallbreaker

Mansel (Sneasel) (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Inner Focus
Level: 5
EVs: 236 Spd / 236 Atk
Jolly Nature
- Ice Punch
- Ice Shard
- Knock Off
- Brick Break
I'm sure we're all happy to see this guy go. Sneasel was absurdly powerful and provided offensive fluidity to this team by revenge killing things and knocking off their items. It was a great direct check to Gligar and glass cannons in general that could be OHKOd by its powerful Knock Off. Sneasel always made a lasting and destructive mark on the opponent's defensive line, and was a huge asset to the team's success. A super fast and powerful Life Orb boosted Knock Off fucked shit up the moment it reared its ugly face, and with Ice Punch and Brick Break to back it off, Sneasel had some powerful ass moves that put heavy dents into the opponent. Sneasel was also a half check to other Sneasels, as it can KO them with Brick Break (if they carry Brick Break too I have a 50% chance of winning a speed tie.)
Sneasel provides the team with a solid quick check to other faster threats. Things in the 19 Speed tier such as Gligar, Misdreavus, Murkrow, and Yanma, vastly increasing the offensive capabilities of Meditite, Gligar, and Magnemite. Knocking Off Berry Juices and Life Orbs is also really useful for this team when trying to muscle past bulkier / offensive threats. Sneasel's Speed and power made it a versatile attacker and cleaner for end games.
Prominent Roles:
Revenge killer
Sweeper
Cleaner
Wallbreaker
Threat check

Manditite (Meditite) @ Life Orb
Ability: Pure Power
Level: 5
EVs: 196 Spd / 196 Atk / 36 HP / 76 Def
Jolly Nature
- Bullet Punch
- Fake Out
- Drain Punch
- Ice Punch
Meditite was previously banned, and for good reason. Its excellent coverage, good typing, and most importantly, its ability: Huge Power doubles its attack stat, to a frightening 26 with a neutral nature! Drain Punch muscles through everything, 2HKOing most defensive threats, while Ice Punch completely murders Tangela and Gligar. Fake Out and Bullet Punch are amazing moves, allowing Meditite to revenge kill every single offensive Pokémon in the tier, since it just hits so hard. Generally, I use Meditite as a mid-game wallbreaker, allowing Sneasel and Tirtouga to SMASH through the opponent later, because really, nothing can switch in Meditite.
It has decent staying power, as Drain Punch often heals a lot of HP. Adamant may be used over Jolly, but the 16 speed allows me to outspeed most defensive Gligars, while the reduced attack doesn't really change whether or not you can 2HKO most things. Meditite has some problems with Growlithe and Slowpoke, but that's when Sneasel's Knock Off comes in handy. Meditite is the dedicated powerhouse of the team, and it's the deadly combination of Sneasel / Meditite / Tirtouga that makes this team so threatening.
Prominent Roles:
Revenge killer
Wallbreaker
Powerhouse
So yeah, that's the team. It covers most prominent things in the metagame well and can just use brute force to squash the rest- it's a really reliable team that has almost no weaknesses if played correctly. It used a lot of powerful and "standard" threats, and was a fun team to play to get used to the new metagame. Unfortunately, Sneasel's ban means we must hang it up in the RMT closet, but it was fun while it lasted nevertheless. Thanks for reading! Please like / comment / borrow if you enjoyed. :) (actually you can't borrow because Sneasel is banned but w/e)
Peace~
