"Well anyway, just let me read these out before we battle:-"
  • This battle is intended to introduce basic strategy elements.Tutors should teach the player about combinations and the damage formula.
  • Whenever possible, the tutor should showcase useful ASB effects like D/E moves, Torment, Endure, Encore, or Counter.
  • Tutors should teach the player about proper team-building, match-up control, item selection, and substitution abuse.
  • During the match, the tutor should give tips on moves and what-not both before and after they order. Hint at what moves would be helpful or explain what strategy would have worked better.

Arche is rarely seen outside of her Pokeball because she suffers from agoraphobia and anxiety around others. Elizabeth knows the scars she bears has something to do with her condition, but Arche chooses to avoid communicating about them. Elizabeth gives Arche support during their solo training sessions to help ease her out of her self-imposed shell. With Elizabeth's support, Arche has been able to make friendships with Miere, Aftae, and Agro.

July is a bit of an anarchist who doesn't like to follow any rules. In public, she'll often tease random strangers and start fights with those she doesn't like. Elizabeth keeps her in check most of the time, but July resents her slightly for it. She doesn't seem to dislike Elizabeth too much, though, since she resides peacefully in Elizabeth's home.

Mawile [M] [Crusher]
Nature: Sassy
Type: Steel/Fairy || Steel/Fairy (Mega)

[Abilities]
Hyper Cutter (Passive)
This Pokemon always keeps its claws/teeth/pincers extremely sharp, and thus cannot have its attack reduced.

Intimidate (Trigger)
When this Pokemon initially goes out into the battlefield, it generates an intimidating roar or war cry that shakes all opponents on the battlefield, reducing their Attack stage (and adjusting the natural stage) by one (1). If an opponent switches in a new Pokemon, Intimidate can be activated again as a Command, and will affect all opponents.

Command: Activate Intimidate - 5 En - Lowers all foes' Attack (and adjusting the natural stage) by one (1) stage. Only usable if a foe entered play this round.

Sheer Force (Toggle) [Hidden]
By default this Pokemon can energize all its attacks with a secondary effect (These are damaging moves that either lower the target's stats, raise the user's stats, or inflict a status condition on the target). The Base Attack Power of every move with a secondary effect increases by two (2), but they will never have their usual secondary effect. When toggled, no effect.

Huge Power (Passive) [Mega]
This Pokemon has immense inner strength that grows with its development, raising its Attack and its Base Rank Total by one Rank for each evolution level (first of three stages = 1, first of two stages or second of three stages = 2, fully evolved = 3). If Skill Swapped, the swapped Pokemon's Attack and Base Rank Total is only raised by one Rank.

Decent first choice, as Protean will play into your defenses well. Mega-Mawile wouldn't a bad choice too, despite being counter-intuitive - it can hold its own well enough against even Nidoqueen, especially when you are ordering second. Expert Belt, however, will only come into play against Nidoqueen - Kitsunoh nullifies it with Frisk, while Hidden Power is the only attack super-effective against Sableye. Speaking of, meet the terror of the metagame back in Gen 5, who was a sleeper in Gen 4.

I said Gen 5, because Gen 6 and the Fairies basically overturned Sableye's dominance. Still, your only Fairy-type Pokemon is not on the field, and I am still unworried by that Hidden Power's BAP, so my tactics this round will consist of locking your Greninja down and preventing it from switching.

"... Oh dear, I forgot my 'BACK IN MAH DAYS' joke-book."
Yamirami (Sableye w/ Everstone): Fake Out > Shadow Claw [Stall] > Shadow Claw [Stall]
IF Arche-Greninja is ordered to use Self-Switching moves AND Yamirami-Sableye did NOT use Detect last action, THEN replace that action with Detect AND the next with Torment [Prankster] instead, overriding all other Substitutions below.
IF Arche-Greninja is under the effects of Protective/Evasive moves, THEN replace the first instance with Double Team (2 clones) and the second with Chill instead, pushing remaining queue back each time.
IF Arche-Greninja is a Normal-type OR a Dark-type Pokemon due to Protean, THEN replace Shadow Claw [Stall] with Brick Break [Stall] instead.

Oh gods it's been two weeks already and I didn't bring my charger home from work.... You're essentially taking the Fake Out in stride while attempting to race the damage. Might have been better to use HP Fairy A2, but eh, once we've rolled Water Shuriken A3 (tomorrow evening I promise) we'll see how it works.

Yup, that Hidden Power Fairy would've pulled its weight had you used it the second time, giving you a much more precise result. Besides, Energy is definitely the more expendable resource to gain or retain a HP lead in the damage race, especially in Singles where disruption tactics are much less valuable than outright damage. Here you'd have two choices: to Switch, and risk a Kitsunoh versus Mega-Mawile matchup with you ordering second (believe it or not, that's actually my best match-up if you do switch), or stay and try to have Greninja remain a Dark-type, or stay and watch how Prankster and Stall once gave Sableye his shot to infamy.

Ordering second is one of the biggest advantage an ASBer can have aside from match-up control - if you can't guarantee that your Mega-Mawile will be facing my Sableye, or any similar advantage in match-up against an opponent, your best call will always be to take second order. This was also the reason why I ordered Fake Out moving first - I am effectively allowing you 2 actions of movement ordering second in Singles, which is far more valuable than the chip damage Fake Out provides.

"Oh, you don't have a name? Well, I'll call you Bertha then."
And here's one thing about movepools - sometimes you can have all you'll ever need and it's just a handful. Right now all I really need is two STAB moves plus two subpar (yea I freely admit that they're subpar because you can outdamage me) coverage attack to maneuver around you. Also this is a good chance to showcase the Damaging Evasive move clause, which allows me to avoid taking your hits while scoring hefty ones of my own.

Nidoqueen w/ Life Orb: Earth Power > Fire Blast > Earth Power
IF Crusher-Mawile is slower AND would use a non-combo Metal Burst, THEN replace the first instance with Skull Bash, the second with Dig, and the third with Skull Bash instead, pushing remaining queue back.
IF Crusher-Mawile is slower AND would use a non-combo Ice type Damaging move, THEN replace that action with Dig instead, pushing remaining queue back.
IF Crusher-Mawile is slower AND would use a non-combo Knock Off, THEN replace that action with Dig instead, pushing remaining queue back.

Remember when I said Mega-Mawile can comfortably trade blows with Nidoqueen? Well, you had to hit before it's a trade. Although, I had to deliberately write a Substitution for Knock Off because Nidoqueen is incredibly reliant on Life Orb to be able to keep up with Mega-Mawile in terms of attack damage.

Last edited:
Not a bad play. You took note of the gender and made use of it the best you can. Although since you are going for neutral attacks, simply using STAB Iron Heads or the like should net you a better result, as Nidoqueen does not resist it- wait, you read the fine print on Attract and don't want to knock it out with an attack that's too powerful, are you?

Well, uh, speed and action order counts a lot. But I think you should have a chance to comeback by severely crippling Nidoqueen, even if Mega-Mawile goes down. Here's why people always favour full movepools - if Nidoqueen had one then I might have more options to counter an incoming Endure. You can buy yourself a lot of room here with the amount of tricks Mega-Mawile has.

Action 1:
Mega-Mawile used Protect!
(+4 Priority)
Mega-Mawile protected itself against Nidoqueen's attacks!
-7 energy
Nidoqueen used Flamethrower!
[9+3+2-2+(6-6)]*1.5 = 18 damage ~ -7.2 energy (Mega-Mawile)

Action 2:
Nidoqueen used Earth Power!
RNG Roll (CRIT) [<=625 CRIT]: 3096/10000 (NO)
[9+3+3+2-2+(6-6)]*1.5 = 22.5 damage (Mega-Mawile)

Ice Fang combo is a good choice. The only alternative I could think of is Endure followed by 2 regular Ice Fangs. Now you're best chance is definitely sending in regain control of the match-up, and go for the throat. If you can achieve a KO on Nidoqueen next round without losing too much HP, you should be able to manipulate the scales back into your favour, since my only surefire counter to your whole team is gone.

Action 1:

When you're fighting against anything that has Metal Burst, Counter, Mirror Coat, and Bide, consider the implications these moves present. On the other hand, be calculative when you use these moves - a misused Bide will often end up not gaining much in terms of total damage done, while being slower or lower in priority in order to use CounterCoat often leaves you open to disruptive or removal tactics, including flinches, paralysis, and straight-up KOes. I'm sending in Kitsunoh against your Infernape dry because I want to set up for a worst-case Pain Split in about 3 rounds from now - but you may be able to force me to discard that tactic then.

"Alright, now's not your time for a one-two score. Not yet."
You'll have to decide your item on Infernape, but either way, switch phase initiated! Here I'll show you what was historically a favored budget item for bulky Pokemons, during the days when you'd need to complete 20 matches just to get a Expert Belt. Erik (Kitsunoh w/ Enigma Berry) coming in. Take note on Frisk. There has been opinion that using Fake Out while ordering first is a good way to limit your opponent's options. I agree.

Fake Out > Earthquake > Dig
IF July-Infernape is ordered to use a Damaging Fire-type move at A2 OR A3, THEN replace the first instance with Protect and the second with Phantom Force instead.
IF July-Infernape is ordered to use Encore, THEN replace that action with Phantom Force instead.
IF July-Infernape is ordered to use a non-combo Will-o-Wisp, THEN replace that action with Substitute (15HP) instead.

Frisk is an Ability that influences Item choices because it nullifies any boost from Items except boosts to BRT. So you made a good call with Rare Candy -Infernape's Fire-STAB does not bump up to +4, but the +1 Rank in offensive stats make up for it nicely. An alternative could be consummables like Weakness Policy and Rage Candy Bar. Speaking of, Weakness Policy is particularly difficult to deal with on Pokemons weak to Dark-type attacks, but I'm sure you've known of it from in-cartridge play.

Yawn is usually a niche move, most commonly found in TLRs due to it's 2 action per round battle format - at the start of the second round after Yawn, the (wild) Pokemon is asleep and twice as easy to catch. Pain Split, however, is a different matter - it serves more-or-less the same purpose as Endeavour, which is to level the immediate playing field in terms of HP difference.

Which, right now, doesn't seem like a good idea to telegraph to you, since you can then work around it easily.
