The French community is one of the most active non-English communities on Showdown, which makes the «Français» room one of the most active rooms. Thanks to regular events, its activity has increased a lot, and both English and French people can socialize in the chat, and many other non-French people are used to join the room too.
If you just speak English, no problem! Most of the room's users speak and understand it and would be happy to help you if you don't understand something through chat and private messages, which makes our community also visited by foreigners.
You can find many ways to spend your time in the French room, and while frequenting it you can meet numerous nice people, from old guys like Leftiez to the newcomers. For that, the chat is still the best way to socialize.
The daily tournaments, which will be explained in the next session, are one of the major activities in the room, and they are a good way to improve your level while having fun. Besides all the Pokemon activites, we have our own bot, Chintok (you can find the commands here). It allowed us to create a couple of games, including rock-paper-scissors and hangman, in order to share other experiences than battling. The community also counts many fans of non-Pokemon games; even if we are doing less Werewolf than in the past, this game still has many supporters. But it is the TagPro community that holds most of the people and gives you the opportunity to learn the game with friends.
Many tournaments are organized in the French room; the most frequents are the daily tournaments, which take place every day and rank the participants by points. These tournaments can be played in different formats, which motivates the new players to discover new metagames. In addition to these regular tournaments, the French community holds many tournaments similar to Smogon's, like the Official French Community Tournament, which takes the same mechanics as the OST; the French Community Tour, which is the equivalent of the Smogon Tour; the French Community League, which allows new talents to be discovered; the French Community Premier League, which is itself focused on the different generations of the OverUsed format; and last but not least, the famous French Frontier that still continues in similar fashion of the Smogon Frontier, offering a good challenge for the best players in the room. Whether you are French or foreign, beginning or experienced player, feel free to register for these tournaments that offer exciting and vibrant fights!
The room is first of all a community and having a positive influence in the chat is simply the best way to contribute. Strategy knowledge is, of course, necessary to help beginners who have difficulty with English, advising them on the sets and the strategy in general, but mature and pleasant behavior is always appreciated, to maintain an active chat and good atmosphere. This is the key for you to get noticed by the staff.
As in most rooms, spamming and flooding are still disallowed, as is insulting the users and being bitter for no reason. Sending games or replay links that aren't French or of official tournaments is also prohibited. It is by respecting these simple rules that we can maintain a good strategic environment here.

Long story. I've been in the room almost since its creation, and I immediately felt confortable with the people who were going around with it as well. It was the people from different TPOs that were mainly active on it.
Much time has passed, and Leftiez has created a forum that would help our community to be on the top. I've participated in most of the tournaments that have been organized, and step by step, I've made my way as a player, and people have started to know me for that.
It was much later that I was promoted to Room Voice, as a reward toward my behavior in the room, and a bit later, iMeridian, who was a former Room Owner, asked me if I was interested in leading the tournaments organized on the forum and in the post of Room Driver. I accepted, as I also had some ideas for tournaments, and I was also complaining sometimes about the tournaments organization, so it was the occasion for me to doing things how I felt.
This post of Tournaments Director, combined with a decent driver work, helped me to win the trust of iMeridian, the only Room Owner at the time, who promoted me to Room Moderator few months later. After that, some conflicts appeared in the room, and I had to leave my post of Moderator but I wanted to keep my role of Tournament Director. Organizing tournaments was something I really liked, as it helped me to keep doing something for the community. Despite some disagreements, there are a lot of people I appreciate, so there is no reason to leave them.
Later, I resumed my post of Moderator, keeping my TD role, and my management of the tournaments helped me to win the trust of a lot of people, especially Leftiez and Vinc2612. My ability to handle the conflicts and make tough choices while maintaining impartiality allowed me to access to the post of Room Owner, which is primarly a management role. We are mainly here to supervise the staff and to make important decisions about the development of the room.

As I said above, the Room Owner's role is mainly based in making important decisions and supervising staff.
By "making important decisions", I mean the establishment of regular activity on the room—you have to think about many different things. For example, the French room hosts daily tournaments, which means that every day a tournament whose time and the tier are defined in a schedule will give points to create a leaderboard. Implementing this is primarily to ensure that the staff will be waiting for you to start the tournament and see the results, but it is also ensures that the tiers that will be played will appeal to the community, and that's certainly the most important thing.
As a TD, I think I may be having a double-sized role within the community formed around the French room, Smogon is opened, but that's also a demanding community, it is difficult to make its own way alone. I like to say that Pokémon is not learned, rather that it is a game that requires experience; reading guides does not bring results, but learning from the battle is the best school for me if we want to improve in this game. The French community is probably the richest non-English speaking community, and we have a lot of young talents; but the opportunities to make a name on Smogon are rare, as in most of the cases, you need to excel during Smogon Tours. Not everyone can do it, so for me the aim when iMeridian offered me the position was to give as many opportunities as possible to the players to play tiers that are played during Smogon Tournaments so that they can be fully prepared when the season is starting. Seeing young players win on the world stage after seeing them grow in our small community is probably the thing I enjoy the most from beeing TD.
Finally, I believe that being the Room Owner of the French room is a privilege because the community is very active and very diverse, and even if you don't really know how to play Pokémon, you still have all your chances to be integrated to the community.

I began to frequent the room quite late, something like summer 2014. Basically I was just looking for matches, but I met cool people so I stayed. When Pyrogon, the former Room Owner, saw that i was motivated to help the room, he quickly promoted me Driver, in order to show me that my efforts paid off.
There were many conflicts between the room staff and the global staff at this time, and in November, Admins demoted the Room Owners to create a new staff closer to them. They offered me the post because they knew me as a Smogon Tournament Director, I accepted, and that's where all "really" started. They wanted an Owner who makes the link between roomauth and global staff in order to appease the conflicts. I had a difficult start, since a part of the room saw me as a traitor but I think that settled and led to the current state of room.

I really like to say that my work is giving the job the moderators and drivers, which is not completly wrong. Seriously, my job is to a good cohesion in the room. Whether it is between users and staff, staff and global staff..., I am trying to take decisions that lead to the best possible atmosphere. By "decisions", I am speaking of promoting reliable people to the staff and being sure that they are doing their job well while also participating to the moderation myself.
But that good atmosphere also passes by activities, and they are my favorite part of the room, especially the tournaments. That is probably the difference between us and the other rooms: we have a more lively community, which has allowed newcomers to train with veterants, and helped them to go on the international scene and becoming the best trainer, like no one ever was.
