Introduction

After the initial release of Pokémon Go, everyone was seen playing it. Here we have a panel discussing how people liked the game so far, what the game really did well and what the game can improve on, and what can be seen for the game's future. As of today, Pokémon Go is still a fun and a game loved by many, with people walking around happily catching Pokémon on their phone; however, is it always going to stay this way? Pokémon Go so far has been very different from other spin-off or non-canon Pokémon games, with its weird and unique way of battling and different various mechanics. These different mechanics in Pokémon Go are what we panelists are going to talk about today: Conni, Codraroll, Ciran, and DHR-107.

What do you think of Pokémon Go so far?

Well, right now Pokémon Go is fun from the start to level 30. There are a lot of features during the game, like the different levels of Potions and Pokémon, and it's very interesting to catch Pokémon, spin PokéStops and collect items, and battle Gyms on a daily basis; however, after level 30 I personally think Pokémon Go reaches a standstill.

There isn't really anything to do once you're in level 30-40. Yes, you can catch Pokémon at their max CP, but that's the only thing left to do as of now, catch and battle. If you ask me, once you reach this point, it becomes slightly boring and there just isn't much to do, so I would assume people would stop playing the game. Everything else is fun and has met the expectations of many people, and most of the glitches were fixed, which is really great because with the enormous number of people playing Pokémon Go, I'd guess that they would have to fix it quickly. I also like the new sightings mechanic, as it tells you where the closest PokeStop is to the Pokémon; I think that this is really creative and that they should be developing more creative and new aspects to the game. Also, the mechanics everyone had high hopes for turned out good I guess, since a lot of people do use augmented reality when catching Pokémon Go; however, polls show that people don't really use it to not waste their battery. Sometimes it's like Pokémon Go gives out these cool features but people don't really accept them when playing, and then that just makes the feature that is not being used pointless.

I also think that the items were made really nice, as there's the Incense and Lure Module as an alternative to catching, but I think Pokémon Go lacks a small oomph that would make people right now highly interested in Pokémon Go like a completely new feature or addition that will draw more people into the game; currently it just feels like people are doing the same thing, catching, hatching, and so on.

In Pokémon Go I'd have to say that the best feature I've seen in-game is the catching mechanic itself. I like the idea of having to swipe the Poke Ball onto a range of a Pokémon in the screen. I feel like this is really creative because it's like you actually have to pay attention and focus to catch a dodging or jumping Pokémon. The curveball mechanic is also really smart and adds a new aspect to battling, since you have to time the curveball right, and it actually guarantees most of the catches because it usually lands in the catching range-circle. Although missing a Poke Ball might be frustrating, it's nothing new, really; it's kind of like catching Pokémon in the canon games, but you just have to fling the Poke Ball manually, and you actually have to try and determine your own catching success. There's also that, like I mentioned above, you can fail catching because the Pokémon jumps up and down or it just simply dodges the Poke Ball, so you actually have to stay determined and try your best, also to prevent the Pokémon from running away, and there is a feature with the Razz Berry where you can make the Pokémon stay instead of fleeing, kind of like the Safari Marsh features in the canon Pokémon games. Overall I just like how they added different features to catching and yet kept some from the original games.

Another good aspect of this is the augmented reality, because it feels really cool when you're catching a Pokémon on the ground or the sidewalk, and it really makes you feel like you are the Trainer that's in a Pokémon Go game; however, a lot of people turn it off because it interferes with the battery, since it uses the back camera. Still, I feel like it makes your whole catching experience better in terms of creativity and whatnot.

Honestly there still just has to be work in progress for Pokémon Go, since there is currently more than one bad feature, but I'll just list the most important one. In my opinion I think that the battling system isn't really good in general. Like in the canon games you are allowed to pick moves; however, there you cannot dodge (though sometimes the accuracy of the move might make it miss), whereas in Pokémon Go you can just attack and dodge completely by free will. I know that there is DPS (Damage Per Second), but it just isn't really fun in general; attacking and dodging and charging up your secondary move is kind of boring, to be blunt. Although it does add strategy and precise timing to battling in Pokémon Go, they really need to make it more entertaining, because there isn't any fun in just simply attacking, dodging, and charging.

Maybe if they can add one of the old features of being able to choose what moves you can use, like the regular two moves, but then add DPS to it so that the stronger move has a higher DPS than the primary move, like Water Gun is the primary move and Hydro Pump is the secondary move on Vaporeon. Also the dodging aspect of Pokémon Go really makes the bulky Pokémon too overpowered or broken, since they can just tank out the opposing Pokémon and then defeat them, which isn't really fair because some Pokémon just completely shred other Pokémon in terms of Pokémon Go battling. So maybe the dodge option can still be used, but it should have a time limit of its own so you'd have to wait a little while until you can dodge. This would make the game fairer, since Pokémon would have a choice at attacking the opposing Pokémon instead of missing every shot because the opposing Pokémon keeps on dodging at the right time.

What do you see for the future of Pokémon Go?

I think that on its current path Pokémon Go undoubtedly will die out, because if they don't really change the current problems and add anything new, I think people will start to lose interest and get bored, because it isn't really fun catching the same Pokémon all over again, and it's not like there is anything to do after you have all the Pokémon in the Pokedex. So I think that Pokémon Go should have a series of minigames to keep people entertained, like maybe you have to complete certain missions like catch five Pidgey in a row or catch three Pokémon in a row that all have higher than 100 CP, etc.

These "missions" or minigames would be fun because after you do catch all the Pokémon in the Pokedex there is absolutely nothing left to do, because some people can just travel and catch the region exclusives and catch the legendary Pokémon once they're out and whatnot. These missions or minigames keep the game alive because it's like a side thing to do instead of mainly focusing on catching Pokémon; they would be also cool if people were still catching Pokémon for the Pokedex because you might get a prize for completing a minigame or mission, which would keep people playing them.

Honestly I don't have much more to say after what I said in the answers above, and I just have the final comment that Pokémon Go really needs to step up its game to add new features and fix some things, because if it continues on the same track, the excitement will turn into boredom and the game will lose interest fast, whereas if you garner more attention while the audience is still big, then it will attract even more people to play the game and enjoy it. The important part of a game is the part that makes it playable for large periods of time, and currently Pokémon Go doesn't have that, so if they add something that can stay entertaining for a long time and add completely new features and additions to spice up the game then I'd say Pokémon Go will live on and people will continue to play it.

I like it, and see great potential in it, but I think it needs to deliver on that potential soon, lest it become too boring. The concept of searching out and catching Pokémon is interesting, but Pokémon is so much more.

Provided you live anywhere near them—PokéStops. Since this summer, my daily walks have become a fair bit longer, due to all the detours I make to pick up PokéStops. Because of them, I've noticed a lot of new places in town that I have passed hundreds of times before but never paid attention to. Besides, who doesn't like the concept of "go here, get free stuff"?

I really like Egg hatching too, although my GPS tends to bug out a lot. To hatch that 5 km egg, in reality I have to walk some 6-8 km. But at least I get my daily walks, and I meet other Pokémon Go players too (if you see a person walking with his phone out, but not looking at it, chances are you've met a fellow trainer). You can plot out a good route between nearby PokéStops, walk it to hatch eggs, and get fresh air and exercise along the way. Pokémon Go is easily the most successful video game that encourages people to get out and exercise.

One of the best features in main series Pokémon games is the development of your Pokémon. At the very beginning, you befriend a starter Pokémon, and together you go out to explore the world. As you explore the world, you assemble a team of Pokémon, train them to make them stronger, tailor their movesets, and see them evolve.

By contrast, Pokémon Go is sorely disappointing. Training your existing Pokémon borders on pointless, since it costs hard-to-get resources, whereas you can get the same result by just waiting for a stronger version of the same Pokémon to cross your path. You won't be doing much team building either—as long as you have Poké Balls, the encouraged strategy is to catch every Pokémon you encounter and discard all but the strongest ones. Catch and release, catch and release, eventually you will catch Pokémon strong enough to keep. And once you find a real keeper, you still have to catch tons more Pokémon of the same species to be able to train it. Training your Pokémon doesn't involve Pokémon Battles at all, but feeding it Candy. You can make yourself as a trainer stronger through Pokémon battles, but all your Pokémon get out of it is wounds you have to heal with items. This is almost the exact opposite of what the main series games are about: your Pokémon are supposed to get stronger through battle, while you as a trainer only get better through knowledge.

Some of the gameplay of Pokémon Go has a really high entry threshold as well. The only (free) way to get Poké Coins is to beat Gyms. Most of the Gyms in my area feature multiple Pokémon with Combat Power around 1500-2500, strong enough to one-shot everything a trainer can field until level 20 or so. You have to visit a lot of PokéStops, catch a lot of Pokémon, and do a lot of other tasks to even get there.

Also, if you don't live in an urban or semi-urban area, Pokémon Go is nigh unplayable. If you have to walk several kilometres to the nearest PokéStop, you will run out of Poké Balls all the time. There wouldn't be many Pokémon to encounter or any Gyms to challenge.

I envision some changes to the gameplay as time goes on. I think we can take Pokémon breeding for granted; they've introduced Eggs already, and breeding would be the perfect way to introduce egg-exclusive baby Pokémon, as there are a lot of in Gen II.

I don't see the "catch and release" gameplay go any time soon, sadly. For the game to function as a "get out and go" game, the gameplay needs to be centered around consuming and finding resources, in this case Poké Balls. If wild Pokémon battles became a thing, Poké Stops would become a lot less desirable. That being said, people might then seek them out for healing items instead, so perhaps it could work?

The announcement trailer also promised big events, such as gathering in Times Square to fight Mewtwo. Currently the five Gen I legendaries are coded into the game, but with no legal way to obtain them. It wouldn't be much of a stretch to believe that the promised events will begin to happen before too long.

Pokémon Go became a tremendous success, far beyond the usual target group for Pokémon. As of writing this, the game has been downloaded 130 million times, spreading out to ten times as many people as Pokémon X and Y did (sales currently around 15 million, but many players get both games). It has proven that people want Pokémon on their mobile devices, which I think will influence the way the main series games are designed in the future. While the games might not transit to mobile devices for the foreseeable future, I think some form of interaction with your phone and your surroundings will become a feature in future Pokémon games.

I've been enjoying it for the most part. The mechanics are basic, but the premise is perfectly in tune with what a lot of people have wanted for a long time. I think there is a lot of room to make the game much better than it is currently. I'm level 17 mostly from catching and evolving things, and hitting PokeStops whenever they pop up.

I'm not sure which feature I like best. I definitely like going for walks to pick up PokeStops and hatch eggs. It's always exciting to see what you're going to come across next when you're out and about on a walk with your phone open waiting for it to shake. I've also liked going to new areas and seeing what Pokémon spawn there as opposed to back home.

I also like how PokeStops "refuel" you with items that are needed. I'd rather it were slightly more skewed towards Balls, but I can understand why a lot of Potions and Revives are dropped too for those people who like to challenge Gyms. It also saves people a lot of money if they live in cities, where there tend to be far more Stops than out in the countryside.

The lack of understanding from Niantic about the tracking system. It started off working perfectly, people could hunt down and find Pokémon. The three steps locator was a good place to start and you could figure out where Pokémon were. Now they changed it, and I don't really go out looking for things unless I can see them directly within my vicinity. It's very frustrating to see Scyther or other rare Pokémon nearby, but have no idea where they actually are unless you get lucky.

The other thing I really hate is how inaccurate the GPS can be. Yeah, it can keep track of you in the overworld, but the periodic updates to the distances on eggs and those updates are "straight lined". So if you walk a curvy route, a lot of that distance gets cut off when it decides to do an update. It means you generally have to walk much more than what the egg actually wants before it will hatch. This is frustrating to say the least when other apps can track your GPS very consistently compared to how you walk.

Lastly, the only other thing I dislike is the total lack of being able to battle a Pokémon and weaken it before I capture it. I know that has been made that way to likely to echo the original Fuchsia City Safari Zone, where all you had were rocks and bait, but I would have preferred being able to battle things more akin to the Bug Catching Contest in Goldenrod.

I hope that Niantic can get over the first few humps Go has had. It has had a very rocky launch, and I hope they can sort out the rest of the problems when patches land and people are able to play consistently. I hope they add other Pokémon in line with other generations; the Gen I pandering is particularly obvious at the moment, and I think that hurts the brand more than helps it. With the addition of Gen II Pokémon, I really hope they add the breeding mechanic properly, being able to create your own eggs and hatch them in order to power up other Pokémon. We already have a decent basis for this with the eggs that are available now.

I hope they start rolling out the large events they implied would happen in the trailer. Imagine 100 or 500 people battling and taking down Mewtwo or Moltres in order to capture it. Bringing people together is what Pokémon is all about after all, and what better way could there be than that?

Ultimately, I could see Go becoming a long-standing game if they keep their interest and keep adding new things. For me, the biggest of those would be the addition of new Pokémon. I am nowhere close to completing the Kanto dex, but the thought of a whole new Generation of Pokémon out there excites me a lot more than finding the 8000th Pidgey...

Go has both been a world changer and a disappointment at the same time. Bringing people together and making something so in tune what people have wanted for a long time is an amazing achievement, and it is only brought down by the odd choices Niantic are making at the top. I hope they get some people in who really understand Pokémon and what the other games are about before they start to make mistakes that make more people stop playing the game.

Personally I find the game very enjoyable. It might not be a very complicated game, but I think that aids to its appeal. I might not play it as much as I used to, but I still play it almost every day.

I like catching and collecting things. When you combine that with the fact that it utilizes the real world with the augmented reality (AR) feature, that's what makes the game most enjoyable for me, even with AR turned off. I've gone places that I wouldn't normally and have seen things in town that I never had before, despite living here for years. It's a great accompaniment to a walk.

Battling. The Gyms need a rehaul in my opinion. It is slightly too easy to take control of a Gym. I'm not sure if I would like it more or less if there was a grace period during which no one can attack a Gym; that way the team controlling it could raise the prestige. Additionally I think Pokémon and their movesets could be better balanced, since you often see the same things being used. Though it is nice seeing Pokémon that tend to be ranked lower in the metagame for the main series games being more usable in Go.

I also live in a bit of a limbo area. There is very little to catch around my house, and there are no PokeStops close by. I have to travel at least 10 minutes by car to get to a good place to play, which makes a bit of an inconvenience factor. Without the tracking ability it is easy to not know where something has spawned in the few spawn points that are around my house, and only encountering one Pokémon on a 30-minute walk can be a bit of a downer.

I think the game has probably hit a larger stabilization in terms of its userbase. You still see groups of people playing in popular places, but not to the same degree as before. I consider that a good thing because it's holding some ground after a decent amount of time post launch. If they can continue to fix glitches and add new content I think it's going to be around for a while.

I was personally very excited for this game to come out so I'm glad that it has done so well. I'm looking forward to new content that will be released and filling up my Pokedex.
