Introduction

If you enjoy breeding, trading, or battling in the handheld Pokémon games, or even just discussing them or winning cool Pokémon from user-hosted giveaways, the Wi-Fi room on Pokémon Showdown is the room for you! Founded in 2014, the room has expanded over the years to encompass all manner of in-game content through its various events, and prides itself on having a trading community that makes an effort to ensure all Pokémon are legitimate. In this article, you'll be introduced to the many aspects of the room and why it's a great place for players of all caliber to come participate.

Trading, Battling, Collecting, and Discussion

Wi-Fi is the room on Pokémon Showdown for trading and expanding your in-game collection. Many users create shops to show off their Pokémon and broadcast what they have available and what they are looking for. There, you can find trades no matter what your collection is focused on, from breedject Litwick in rare Poké Balls, to fully trained, battle-ready Porygon-Z, to shiny Mew.

Besides trading, you can also use the Wi-Fi room to look for in-game battles and to discuss what's happening in-game. The room's staff keep the room informed of new events that come out as well as technical issues with the games. You can also find discussion on both competitive and casual play, help filling out your Pokédex, including trade evolutions with trusted users, help with in-game mechanics such as breeding, and user-hosted giveaways for Pokémon.

Events

Various events make up a large part of the Wi-Fi room. Put together by a team of Event Helpers, most allow users to earn an in-room currency, Wi-Fi Points (WP), by participating, winning, and hosting.

Giveaways

Every month, the Wi-Fi room hosts an official giveaway. Typically consisting of 15-25 shiny and/or battle-ready Pokémon centered around a theme and obtained by a group of helpers, popular past giveaways have included the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra themed giveaways, which coincided with the release of the two DLCs. Lasting over a period of twelve hours, there are tons of chances for you to win several amazing prizes no matter what time zone you’re in! This is the only section that doesn't award WP for participating.

Tournaments

Highlighting a different tier each month, Wi-Fi's Tournaments section contains a number of events to help you learn the tier and earn WP while doing so. With various tournament sizes and play options on both Pokémon Showdown and in-game, anyone can play. You can battle other trainers in the popular Nugget Bridge event, and if you're not sure you’re ready for competitive play, the monthly team workshop gives you a place to get direct feedback on how to improve your team from experts in the tier. Finally, show off your team, see how much you’ve improved, and see how far you can get in the monthly tournaments!

Small Events

This is home to all events not part of the Giveaways or Tournaments sections. These events are often based on in-game features and aim to breathe new life into already present parts of the game. Examples of this include the Breeding Contest and the League Card Contest. In the Breeding Contest, you breed a shiny Pokémon based on a given theme and submit a small story to go with it. In the League Card Contest, users design a unique League Card to be entered into several different categories. But that's not all Small Events has to offer, and new events are designed every month to bring more opportunities to earn WP and sometimes even shiny Pokémon!

Prizes

So what do you do with all of the WP you've accumulated from participating in the many events Wi-Fi has to offer? You spend them at the Prize Shop, of course. The Prize Shop is filled with Pokémon and items provided by our helpers, and they range from breedjects to flawless shiny Pokémon and rare events, as well as a second chance at any Pokémon you missed from the monthly giveaway. Just make sure to spend your points before they reset at the end of the month!

Meet the Room Owners

Billo

Hi! I'm Billo and I have been an active member of the Wi-Fi room for 6+ years now and it's safe to say I've enjoyed the whole experience. I initially joined the room by accident, and after lurking for a short while, I noticed the room had a very welcoming and wholesome community, so I decided to stick around, and here we are today! Wi-Fi has always been my go-to place for in-game trades, battles, and discussions. I'm a big fan of live chat discussions; being able to interact with the community and trade rare Pokémon with ease was a huge perk and a massive help on expanding my now huge Pokémon collection.

Duel

This feels like forever ago, but I first found the room looking for a trading community with more of an instant response time. I had had experience with other communities but was annoyed with how much of a hassle it was most of the time. I did a little bit of trading on Smogon and enjoyed the various giveaways that were posted, so the thing that caught my eye with the Wi-Fi room was the random giveaways that were hosted every day, and eventually the giving nature of the room made me want to do giveaways of my own. Throughout my time in the room, I've been able to interact with many interesting and kind people, many of whom work hard in the room's events behind the scenes to make the room better. The Wi-Fi room is a fun place to be, there's always stuff to do if you prioritize playing Pokémon on your games and like trading, collecting, or battling on them.

Nol

I first became a consistent user of the room at the beginning of 2018 after lurking on and off for a few years. I was drawn in by all of the incredible and rare things people had to offer, and the fact that people were willing to give away something as rare as a shiny Darkrai amazed me. In mid-July 2018, the room held a massive giveaway for the then newly released Zeraora, and the ROs at the time allowed anyone who was willing to help. I asked to help, and the rest is history. That was the first event I ever helped with, and helping and participating in Wi-Fi's various event sections has remained my favorite part of the room for the duration of my time there.

Conclusion

Hopefully this article has peaked your interest, and you're now curious about all the Wi-Fi room has to offer and will come see it for yourself. Hope to see you there!
