Gengar @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Cursed Body
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Trick
- Focus Blast
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Wave

Gengar is a first time RUer this generation and has quickly established itself as one of the premier ghost types in the tier. With a fantastic base 130 Sp Atk complemented by a base 110 Speed stat, Gengar is one of the most effective Choice Scarfers in the tier. With incredibly potent STABS in Shadow Ball and Sludge Wave, along with Focus Blast to provide coverage for the likes of Cyclizar and Bisharp, Gengar is an RU threat to be reckoned with. This is complemented by its access to Trick as well giving it the added utility to cripple things that might otherwise still wall it such as Chansey. How will you survive vs the spectre?

:sv/overqwil:
Overqwil @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
Tera Type: Flying
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Crunch
- Barb Barrage
- Spikes
- Pain Split
Overqwil is a check to Gengar. Overqwil can resist both stab moves from gengar and takes little damage from them, while crunch is a clean OHKO. Focus blast is a 2hit ko sometimes, but smart pivoting can alleviate this. From here, overqwil can set up spikes or heal off some of the damage with pain split. Tera flying is to resist focus blast while not making overqwil weak to any of gengar's stab moves.

Counter:
:sv/gastrodon:
Gastrodon @ Leftovers
Ability: Sticky Hold
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SpA / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Earth Power
- Ice Beam
- Recover
- Spikes
Gastrodon is a counter to Gengar. With good special bulk, gastrodon is able to take on gengar pretty nicely, with shadow ball or focus blast having a extremely small chance to 4hit ko (0.1% chance). The interesting thing about sticky hold gastro is that it doesn't care at all if gengar decides to trick its item off, as it will fail and gengar will be stuck using trick. From here, earth power is a guarenteed 2hit ko, with it having a chance of OHKO entirely. Tera dark is incase gengar tera ghost shadow balls, though you do make yourself weak to focus blast so this should be used in a last ditch scenario.

Counter: Alolan Muk
:pmd/muk-alola:

Muk-Alola @ Leftovers
Ability: Poison Touch
Tera Type: Dragon
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Knock Off
- Poison Jab
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

There's not much to go over that people shouldn't already know here - Alolan Muk is the best counter to Gengar around. A solid specially defensive wall with access to Knock Off + Poison Touch makes Alolan Muk incredibly splashable and the combination of Rest + Sleep Talk gives it multiple opportunities to remove status and recover health throughout a game while still making progress.

Calcs:
252 SpA Gengar Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Muk-Alola: 95-112 (22.9 - 27%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
4 Atk Muk-Alola Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gengar: 332-392 (127.2 - 150.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Check:

Zoroark-Hisui @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Illusion
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Tera Blast
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast
- U-turn

Thanks to Zoroark-h's typing, you're immune to two of Gengar's moves, giving you lots of opportunities to switch into a choice locked Gengar, Zoroark-h also always tanks a sludge wave from full should you lose the speed tie and you ohko it back with shadow ball. U-turn is nice to keep up momentum, and tera blast is your normal stab of choice giving you the ability to switch it up while also flipping your dark weakness into a resist after tera, and rocking a choice scarf means trick doesn't hinder you at all.

252 SpA Gengar Sludge Wave vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Zoroark-Hisui: 117-138 (46.6 - 54.9%) -- 63.7% chance to 2HKO
252 SpA Zoroark-Hisui Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Gengar: 320-380 (122.6 - 145.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Counter:
:sv/umbreon:
Umbreon @ Leftovers
Ability: Inner Focus
Tera Type: Poison
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Foul Play
- Wish
- Toxic
- Protect

Umbreon's insane special bulk means Gengar's best way of hitting it, focus blast, is a 3HKO after leftovers, and Umbreon can just wishtect stall the focus blasts, meaning you can easily sit on Gengar and 2HKO with foul play. You got the standard set with wish, protect, and toxic to force progress on fat mons and mons that try to switch in to take care of you.

252 SpA Gengar Sludge Wave vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Umbreon: 93-111 (23.6 - 28.1%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Gengar Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Umbreon: 158-186 (40.1 - 47.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
0- Atk 0 IVs Umbreon Foul Play vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gengar: 158-188 (60.5 - 72%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Check: :Chesnaught:

Chesnaught @ Kebia Berry
Ability: Bulletproof
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 252 HP / 204 Def / 52 Spe
Impish Nature
- Knock Off
- Spikes
- Synthesis
- Body Press

Chesnaught provides as a decent check to Gengar, with a 2/3 chance of not taking any damage at all due to its ability Bulletproof, which denies Shadow Ball and Focus Blast from doing any damage to it. A Kebia Berry gives you an out of an opponent that predicts your switch, halving the damage of Sludge Wave. The reduced damage lets you either use Knock Off to remove scarf, set up a layer of spikes, or Terastallize into a Steel type to become a true wall to Gengar.

252 SpA Gengar Sludge Wave vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Kebia Berry Chesnaught: 198-234 (52.1 - 61.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 Atk Chesnaught Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gengar: 224-264 (85.8 - 101.1%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO

Counter: :Muk:

Muk @ Leftovers
Ability: Sticky Hold
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Knock Off
- Toxic
- Pain Split
- Gunk Shot

You can never beat the original, and much like its Alolan counterpart, Kantonian Muk is a great counter to Gengar, and can even outperform Alolan Muk in some areas. Being able to make progress with Knock Off is valuable, threatening a 2HKO on Gengar. Pain Split not only provides a way for Muk to heal up, but also as another progress maker, taking chunks of HP from switch ins to it trying to preserve Gengar. Toxic makes up for the lack of Poison Touch on Gengar, being able to deny lengthy stay ins from other Mons. The reason for not running Poison Touch, and a key reason that Muk is so great at being a Gengar counter, is Sticky Hold, denying a Trick that would otherwise neuter Muk’s longevity. Gunk Shot is to provide a move that can do decent damage, and Tera Fairy helps against a wide array of types generally.

252 SpA Gengar Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Muk: 94-112 (22.7 - 27%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 Atk Muk Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gengar: 220-260 (84.2 - 99.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Ability: Defiant
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance

Pretty standard SD Bisharp set. Bish needs to be wary of Focus Blast, but it can easily switch in on a choice locked Shadow Ball/Sludge Wave and proceed to set up SD.

For our next victim, we have a former uber, and the first dragon on votw, SALAMENCE!

Salamence @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Intimidate
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 Atk / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Hurricane
- Draco Meteor
- Earthquake
- Roost

Salamence is one of the stronger special breakers in RU. Although fallen from his days of ADV Ubers glory, Salamence has built a unique niche for himself as a special breaker in SV RU. With a unique defensive profile provided by its natural Dragon/Flying typing and Intimidate, as well as being a special breaker who can easily muscle past Cyclizar, Salamence has an interesting role functioning both as a competent defensive and offensive piece for any team. This, supported by a respectable base 100 Speed allowing mence to speedtie with common threats in the tier such as Jirachi or non-Scarf gapdos, and a respectable 110 Base Special attack and powerful STABs in Hurricane and Draco Meteor, make Salamence a force to be reckoned with. DRACARYS!!!

:sv/diancie:
Diancie @ Leftovers
Ability: Clear Body
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Encore
- Diamond Storm
- Body Press
Diancie is a check to salamence. With a more physically defensive spread, diancie can always take two e-quakes and fire back with two diamond storms. If diancie gets a defense boost on diamond storm, it can definetely win. Diancie can also threaten salamence post tera with body press, with diamond storm+bp always ko'ing salamence. Encore can lock salamence into a move if needed, whether that be roost or draco meteor or e-quake to switch to an immunity. Stealth rocks can give diancie some merit even if salamence swaps out. Tera ghost can be a good neutral typing if salamence is potentially overwhelming diancie, so you can take a hit easier.

Calcs:
4 Atk Salamence Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252 Def Diancie: 112-132 (36.8 - 43.4%) -- 98.8% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
4 Atk Diancie Diamond Storm vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Salamence: 260-308 (78.5 - 93%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
4 Atk Diancie Diamond Storm vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tera Steel Salamence: 65-77 (19.6 - 23.2%) -- possible 5HKO
252 Def Diancie Body Press vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tera Steel Salamence: 234-276 (70.6 - 83.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Counter:
:sv/bronzong:
Bronzong @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 HP / 88 Def / 168 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Iron Defense
- Body Press
- Psychic
- Rest
Bronzong is a counter to salamence. With levitate and a steel typing, bronzong is either resistant or immune to every single attack salamence has on this set. From here, bronzong can do a few things. If your idea is to purely ko salamence as soon as possible, then psychic is a 3hit ko (unless you are unlucky). If you want to make salamence a set up opportunity (something which is hard to do reliably), then iron defense is here to boost the power of body press up to +6, which then is a 2hit ko. This also catches salamence post tera, as neutral bp is a guarenteed 2hit ko. Now, doesn't salamence just repeatedly chip down bronzong? Well, that's where rest comes in. Bronzong takes so little damge from salamence's hits, that being forced to rest against it is not really an issue, so its foolproof (unless you get unlucky with confusion procs and hitting yourself, in which case just go gamble at the casino, you will have better luck there).

Calcs:
252 SpA Salamence Hurricane vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Bronzong: 61-72 (18 - 21.3%) -- possible 7HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 SpA Bronzong Psychic vs. 0 HP / 0- SpD Salamence: 108-127 (32.6 - 38.3%) -- 97.9% chance to 3HKO
+6 88+ Def Bronzong Body Press vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Salamence: 186-219 (56.1 - 66.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
88+ Def Bronzong Body Press vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Tera Steel Salamence: 188-222 (56.7 - 67%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
