    • As the bustle of the city is at its maximum this season, you have been tasked to entertain the crowds going to the charity fair. Children in particular want to see their favorites battle, but they might not necessarily be of the same power level as the Pokemon in your usual teams...
  • Each player must choose exactly one of the below Pokemon to be their Underdog.

  • When sending your team to the host, create a rental profile for your Underdog. Each Underdog comes at level 4, with all Techniques unlocked, and with your choice of Nature, Combos, and Hidden Power type.
  • Each player's Underdog will be moved to their Bench at the start of the battle (unless they are immediately sent out).
  • Each player may include 1 purchaseable item they do not own in their Backpack.

  • This huge pyramid sports very well delineated tiers linked together by ladders. Each tier sees all manners of Pokémon vie for the opportunity to climb the ladder unimpeded, for the highest tier, undisturbed for now, is said to host a great treasure... Exertion from a lower tier makes for a great warm-up for the ongoing battles in a higher tier!
    • Pokemon may use their unlocked Advanced Techniques if they are Level 2 or higher.
    • When a Pokemon is first sent out, that Pokemon becomes Level 1.
    • At the end of each round, each Pokemon in play gains a Level, to a maximum of 4.
    • When a Pokemon faints during their opponent's turn; that opponent gains a Level, to a maximum of 5.
    • If a Pokemon would become Level 5; instead, that Pokemon's team wins the battle.
    • (When a Pokemon exceeds their profile Level, post their newly-gained moves. They don't gain a nature or any technique unlocks they didn't already have in their profile.)

some thoughts on circuit so that it doesn't look like i pulled these out of my ass after i get my shit rocked
post 8: League Circuit rating and handicap

from Sept/Jan 1 patch notes:
League Circuit
  • Throw out W/L division; pair everyone together.
  • Players accumulate handicap and have increasingly worse teams as a result.
  • We can dock winning players:
    • Some of their Technique Control (winning players have better Tech quality)
    • A... bench slot or two...?
  • We *cannot* dock players their:
    • Levels (Circuit is for leveled mons)
    • Too much of their Tech
    • Definitely not stats or their Luck or any horseshit like that.

"player rating" is used here to stand in for "whatever we end up calling our method of scaling a player's handicap". the name isn't set in stone.

We could try making arena effects that scale inversely with player rating, or with gap in player rating, but that forces us to stop making the simplest arenas.
tangent: i think it's good that circuit requires us to make an arena each month. it's tempting to just run a plain arena all months, and let players self-serve, but making mods look at circuit keeps us from collectively fucking off all at once.​

nebulously, i wanted the gap in player handicap to worsen the favored-to-win player's team, but there aren't many vectors for that, that are actually acceptable.

that said, how much handicap granularity do we need? handicap could be "if the gap is bigger than X, the favored player suffers this fixed handicap", meaning helios gets the same handicap whether he's fighting a reasonable player who loses sometimes (tman, duo) or an unloseable matchup (des??)

so this sort of coalesces into: however many handicaps we have, each handicap should have a team-weakening penalty and a required gap in player rating. then we decide what rating *is*, how it's scored (can you preserve rating by playing good? what does that look like?), and what rating players start at.

the hard part, im realizing, is scoring players. do we just add a point per win, and deduct one per loss? or do we scale it based on the "expected" outcome, to payout more for upsets? i don't want to recreate all of the metagaming, inflation, and stagnation associated with classic elo

is rating tied to circuit rewards? (lifetime rating gain, say) i wouldn't want players to feel their rewards slow down just because they're beating everyone to death

what constitutes "tight, technically sound play"? in an example fighting game, you could reward a losing player for anti-airing their opponent more often than not, or for correctly blocking a number of hits in a row. what's a "display of skill" that we can quantify in BBP? should a player's performance evaluation affect their payout, their rating change, or both? should it impact those of their opponent?

Background:
ch.i: Gunhilde's previous trainer was interested only in her utility, putting her to work in heavy labor. Following his arrest, Gunhilde languished in storage before making her escape the first time she was released from her ball. She lived within city limits for months as a feral Pokemon, wracking up quite the hefty bounty in property damage taking what she needed. Rather than hand Gunhilde over and claim the reward for her capture, Lou offered her a place in his team.\n\nch.ii: The days of trouble that followed that meeting are as ancient history to the pair, now. Between that day and this one lay uncounted trials, failures, and victories; each of them spurring just a modicrum of growth and reflection. Carried along this tide of time and her own great effort, Gunhilde has blossomed from a street-dwelling petty thief into a highly respected and competent battling Pokemon. How They Met:
Louise doesn't like to talk about herself or her past, so nobody really knows anything about her history. But, she has let it slip that she used to live somewhere that rained all of the time and that she used to have a very nice life before being forced to move by some catastrophe.

Name Origins:
Originally going to be Barbara because it sounded similar to barbaric which Tyranitar's Japanese name was apparently based on. But, I thought Louise (based on Luisa from Encanto) sounded better.

Sparkling, shining, and shimmering, Rose naturally draws the attention of everybody around. Due to her sparkly appearance, she possesses a natural knack for performance. Rose is always poised and elegant, beaming with a brilliant smile, just like the diamond on her forehead! In battle, she is no less dazzling, pummeling foes with diamonds and still looking stunning while doing so.

Changes Upon Mega Evolving:
Doduodrio and Rose discovered a vein of Diancite and were able to have some of it made into a Diancite for her to hold. However, apparently the two of them were not close enough yet for Rose to be able to Mega Evolve. So, Doduodrio entered more Contests to get better at performing. Rose helped coach Doduodrio with performing, especially with Vespa the Hisuian Braviary. One day, Doduodrio and Mamoswindle entered a Contest and faced off against the formidable Stella Magna once again. This time, Doduodrio was here to prove that his last performance wasn't a fluke. So, Doduodrio and Mamoswindle teamed up to absolutely blew Stella Magna away with their performances, winning the Contest! After the Contest, Rose was beaming with so much happiness that she Mega Evolved into Mega Diancie!

How They Met:
Rose is a huge fan of watching Pokémon Contests, seeing the Coordinators and their partners appeal with spectacular moves. So, Doduodrio and Snarguffle's overwhelming victory against the famous Contest Coordinator Stella Magna definitely caught Rose's attention. Although it later appeared to be a fluke performance by Doduodrio, Rose still decided to join the team to help Doduodrio get better at Contests.

Amber is fidgety and hasty, rushing through everything she does with a sense of urgency. Wherever she goes, the winds blow faster, and everybody feels just a bit more anxious to get going and move on to the next task and then the one after that. Those who she feels are slowing her down will face violent blasts of wind so that none shall stand between Amber and her goal.

How They Met:
While exploring the Eviolite Cave, Doduodrio stumbled upon a strange, bright red Poké Ball. Amber emerged from it and dragged Doduodrio along, speeding him through the cave, all the way to the end. Within just a few hours, he was able to complete the exploration and earn the respect of Amber.

Profile:
Always surrounded with a cloud of sweet-smelling mist, Venus brings an atmosphere of calmness wherever she goes. Venus is used to people submitting to her will, so when she doesn't get her way, her composure can snap. However, this rarely happens, as her mist helps to calm tempers and encourage a general sense of tranquility and goodwill.

How They Met:
Rising out of the depths of the sea, Venus appeared to Doduodrio, promising to occasionally come to his team's aid if he won a particular battle against another trainer. Due to unforseen circumstances, the battle never happened, but Venus still agreed to battle with Doduodrio if it suits her.

Name Origins:
From Venus, the Roman goddess of love, who is said to have been born, fully-grown, from the sea. Tapu Fini in its shell reminded me of Venus in her clamshell, in the painting The Birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli. Additionally, Venus has connections to water due to her unusual birth.

Profile:
Tera is very thoughtful and is quiet most of the time, so a lot of the time, people forget that they are even there... or at least people would forget if they weren't so big. They are very inquisitive and are always collecting data about everybody they see for future use.

How They Met:
Being a Steel-type, Tera was drawn in by Bub's Magnet Pull. Doduodrio helped them unstick themself from Bub (Note to Self: Maybe Bub can help attract more Steel-type friends?). Tera was curious about bonds and the stock market (at least that's what Doduodrio thinks they said...) so they asked to join the team!

Name Origins:
Tera is from terabyte, a computer term. It's also the prefix for one trillion, which may just as well be Tera's IQ level.
