Pokémon Legends: Z-A General Discussion

Yeah, definitely not a fan of the combat system. Give me back my turn based combat :(

Also, does anyone know when the handholding stops? I'm you to Mission 5 so far.

Also, how early can I get mints? Because my Chikorita has the WORST nature possible lol

I like the combat system but I feel it'd work a *lot* better if we were playing as the pokémon or even could just instruct them a bit more directly rather than it being based pretty much entirely off of where our character is. Had a couple of instances where my pokémon took a hit rather than just hitting the opponent because I happened to select a special move and so they retreated to be near me rather than just attacking.

Found my first Alpha Shiny, once again not even hunting for it, just happened to run into one.

BTW, with some 8 hours in, mainly focused on talking with NPCs and looking for pieces of lore, I think it's safe to assume this is the most political Pokémon has ever been - not even BW reached these levels of controversy in the Pokémon world.

I'll try to explain. Some NPCs complain about having to go outside with a Pokémon to defend themselves against wild Pokémon. Other ones complain about Wild Zones and how they separate humans and Pokémon. But there are a few who even think Pokémon and humans shouldn't be together.

This means Lumiosians are really divided on what to do, and Marble herself critizices the town's mayor because of its handling of the crisis. And yes, this is a political thing because there are groups whose speech aligns with these different positions: Quasartico agrees with increasing Pokémon and human collaboration, but aren't as revolutionary as some other group that appears in the early game and I won't be mentioning in order to avoid spoilers. And while there doesn't seem to be any group defending those who think wild Pokémon should be out of the city, there are just too many people complaining about it and eventually there should be some people with these ideals who would be trying to take power - similar to BW's Team Plasma speech.

I haven't completed the story yet but if it does happen what the leaks said, I can't see Kalos being able to handle this new, growing opposition to Pokémon-human integration in the upcoming years.

I mentioned this in the ZA team discussion thread, but I wanted to talk about what I think is one of the best mons in the game:

Yeah, there's a good reason why Gamefreak was pushing the Ralts mystery gift promotion so heavily; Mega Gardevoir is broken. Draining Kiss off 165 SpA and Calm Mind alleviates so much pressure from these fast-paced battles, especially for the Rogue Mega bosses. Not only does it heal you a lot, it doesn't take long to recharge, so you can fire off Draining Kisses pretty quickly. The one downside to Draining Kiss is the fact it's a contact move, so Gardevoir has to run up to foes to use it, but considering you get so much health back, it's pretty much a non-issue. It also has Mystical Fire for Steels and SpA-debuffing. Combined with Calm Mind and Draining Kiss, special attackers just do nothing to you.

Even regular Gardevoir is amazing with these qualities without Gardevoirite. I say this because the mystery gift will eventually expire and turn Gardevoirite into a later-game item, and Ralts itself appears later. However, in that scenario, I still think the investment is worth it. Gardevoir's just that good.

I haven't seen any other mention of this but I was able to redeem My Nintendo Gold Points from a physical Switch 1 cartridge, despite their supposed cancellation earlier this year for physical games released after March 24, 2025. A remnant of Z-A's originally delayed launch date?

Does positioning particularly matter in this game? There's some obvious stuff like hazards or hitting more than one mon at a time, but in my playthrough, I never found myself very pressed by having my pokemon in one spot or another

Enjoying the Mega Lucario statue in the museum that very assuredly says the First pokemon to Mega evolve in the Kalos region which is probably the easiest handwave available short of "Rayquaza's role as mega evolution was lost to time."

Actually would've been cute to have a section in the museum about that or something.

The museum in general is so good. I like the implications that ancient Galar/Kalos relations probably weren't great, judging by the phrasing of "However, it is difficult to verify such claims, given relations between Kalos and Galar during the era." Not too surprising considering the war-focused heads of state
Volo all but confirming to indeed still being alive fits the whole life/death thing while also being a fun thing to confirm. Kind of feels like he gave on his ambition.
"There are records of a man named Ingo providing guidance in the ways of Pokemon battle, but it is said that he simply vanished one day after stating, 'It's time for me to return.'" I'm so glad our subway bro got to go back. They deserve that happy ending. It also sort of resolves an issue that went unstated about both Ingo and the Player character likely being stranded forever, but no I guess they too can always move forward. Which is good, thank you for not being a dick about this Arceus.

Bit surprised they didn't sneak in anything from Cogita.

yeah gardevoir is very good and the heracross they give you in a story quest trade is just as broken. you can probably do most of the game with just those two.

I like getting as close to the trainer as possible when I knock out a pokemon so I can get my attack off as fast as possible, often times faster than their attack even goes off. I started doing it after an npc cheesed me with the same thing lol.

Oh yeah, absolutely, that Heracross is nuts. Pin Missile is surprisingly strong and Brick Break is a great STAB, too. When I got it, it was the powerhouse on my team for a while. Ended up swapping it out for Chesnaught since I wanted to use it and didn’t want a bad flying weakness. Still, Heracross is a top contender for one of the best in the game, too, especially since Heracronite is available early too iirc

Random things I gave grimacing chuckle about from NPC dialog:
-A guy saying his favorite pokemon as a kid were Tyranitar & Excadrill so he could make the BEST Sandstorm team. in the game without abilities
-A woman wondering if what "young gym leader" was inventing these days. For the gym leader of the city she lives in that helped with the prism tower and also just. isn't here, i guess. I guess also means the gym challenge technically still exists?
-A guy saying "I bet they'd make bank if they brought back super training now". I don't even like super training but this just leads to more questions than not acknowleding it!
-Guy running a stall who says he has his roller blades somewhere. I don't actually think this game needed roller blades (could you imagine the tricks required for some of these parkour segments), mind you

Did *anyone* in ORAS see Mega Rayquaza besides you and Zinnia? Because maybe it's not really common (or academic) knowledge that Rayquaza even evolves.

Never played PLA, so uhhh how did Ingo even get there? Was it Arceus too? Or did Arceus just decide to help him to get back to Unova?

I think some people put it together but considering the lengths needed to mega evolve the thing I can believe that it is knowledge that's pretty obscure. It doesn't even properly use a mega stone.

He fell one day, just like us; iirc he was literally found collapsed in the snow region which is how he joined the Pearl clan. But he wasn't given a mission from God, didn't have a smartphone and his amnesia seemed much worse than ours*. personally his situation seemed a lot more similar to a Faller like Looker (ORAS) and Anabelle, but it was likely also Arceus' doing. Maybe it was an attempt by Arceus to give Hisui some more battle-readiness (he winds up leading the battle dojo in jubilife), but I don't think that's stated anywhere.

*A lot of options given imply we do retain our memories even if we don't understand what's going on. But a handful of others imply we either don't or can like. Choose to say we don't anyway? Anyway meanwhile Ingo literally just has nothing but his name, extremely vague memories of Pokemon he used to have, and knowing his coat is important to him. and he retained innate battle knowledge

You know, it’s funny, I like side quests a lot even if they’re just menial “show me this Pokémon” or “use an Electric move on this holovator” tasks, but I sigh and groan whenever a side quest turns out to just be a Trainer battle with extra steps.

Unrelated to that, I’m finally at the point of the game where I’m taking on Rogue Mega battles, and so far I think they’re a really fun, strong iteration on the boss battles from Arceus. Pin Missile has never felt as threatening as it did during the Rogue Mega Beedrill battle. :psynervous:

Similarly, I had a pretty good time grinding up the ranks for Greninjite. The four-way free-for-alls are a little repetitious and not particularly strategic, but still, it’s an entertaining few minutes of chaos lol.

I’ve opened up several more Wild Zones, and was pleasantly surpised to find a snowy, icy one. Maybe they aren’t quite as uniform as I thought they would be. Although… it is a little disappointing that there’s only like 5-8 species in each one max, and that that’ll never change. This game could perhaps use a bigger Pokédex, I feel.

No one else sees it, but at the very least, the Devon Corporation has some knowledge about it due to their research on Infinity Energy. After the Delta Episode, one of the scientists there will explain to you about how Rayquaza’s mikado organ enables it to Mega Evolve due to its diet of meteorites, and mentions that the Pokédex has been updated with that information.

For what it’s worth, there’s a couple of bits of dialogue in Z-A that allude to Mega Evolution originating in Hoenn. I’ll have to dig them up later*, but it’s definitely a part of the lore that GF are keeping in mind. I’ll be curious to see if the DLC gets into that at all if Rayquaza and the Primals return.

* Later is now. There’s an NPC with a speech bubble above their head that says, “Didn’t Mega Evolution first start far away in the Hoenn region?”, and in the datamined Diancie event, Emma says, “I just remembered that AZ mentioned something else. He said during his long journey searching for Floette, he saw a phenomenon in Hoenn that may have been the beginning of all Mega Evolution! That’s what got him always thinking about the bonds between people and Pokémon.” That’s a reference to ORAS, where we learned that AZ was present in Sootopolis during Rayquaza’s first Mega Evolution.

gonna blabber mindlessly off here for a moment haha
love Sableye a whoollee bundle, gonna add him to my team and actually train him because I love my Sableye so much, don't see him dodging many attacks so I'm probably gonna outfit him with something like Will-O-Wisp, Recover and both one physical and one special move with a Special Defense increasing nature
is there any reason I shouldn't go Speed down nature or blah blah blah

"Wonder what ever happened to the newscaster woman, malva" I would literally rather they just exclude all dialog like this if you're not going to actually talk about any of the dozen characters that probably could be involved but aren't, game.

Considering the size of the zones (& how they can show up outside of them) I think it works out. They're basically routes and routes in most games only have so many Pokemon. The dex isn't much smaller than L:A (& when you exclude all the legends, arguably maybe it's bigger in terms of hwat you run into?), either, and that game had to fill an entire area with the things.

Most attacks require the Pokemon to either be directly up close to its target or stand near its Trainer to start preparing its move. Generally, physical attacks like Poison Jab, Fire Punch, etc. require the user to be close to its foe, while long-range special attacks that fire off a projectile/beam like Moonblast and Mystical Fire or strike a particular area/target like Hurricane and Thunderbolt require the Pokemon to stand by its Trainer.

Generally, most Pokemon will generally favor one style of attack based on their movepool and stat line. Some moves kind of break this trend though; for example, Gardevoir’s Draining Kiss requires it to be near the target but goes against the long-range nature of its main STAB moves like Moonblast.

Bizarre design decision: Confusion clears sludge pile so my immediate thought would be, aha, most psycic moves probably clear it away! Such as psybeam, the blast of concentrated psychic energy that hits across the screen. I bet it could even clear out MULTIPLE piles of sludge in its radius, rewarding me for finding a move that hits a wide area!

the answer: no. Drag confusion back into Kirlia's moveset so you dont have to keep swapping out mons.
