Mario Kart Wii

I'm wondering what the consensus is on the best kart/bike? Are the hard to get unlockables the best option or are they balanced with the defaults?
 
First competition began today. Pretty cool. I've got quite a good time so far. I intend to go back later for more attempts. It isn't as good as a time trial in some respects. Opposition is one thing. Takes more luck. Still, the free roaming Chomp's give a nice change for Mario Circuit.
 
1:42? The MKW channel said I was quite high, and there is no way anyone cut over 1 minute off my time. I took 2:50 as a guess from memory. I wasn't paying attention to time, so it must have been 1:50.
 
Got 1:42 in that competition thing. Got 3 mushrooms first item box, but had to use two to avoid two blue shells, instead of using them for the shortcut. =/

Might try to get below 1:40 at some point. The record is around 1:33 though.
 
unlocked around half the stuff, to the earlier poster who mentioned the torpedo/spear (whatever) I think it's only useful on some of the tracks. the shooting star seems to take curves a lot better - it seems high draft karts are more desirable on some of the courses
 
I don't think so, it just has a faster time... you don't get unlockables from tt until you reset the game and go back to your license (...why?) so try that.

2:34 on koopa cape. Hit one of those lightning things on the last lap though ugh.

Happens every time on the last lap, without fail .__.

Funky, with the Bowser Bike.

Hate funky so much, and will never use him in races, but he is the best character for time trials.
