While Emboar is usually seen being a powerful physical attacker with either the Choice Scarf or Choice Band set, Emboar's Special Attack stat is actually surprisingly usable, and Choice Specs Emboar is actually able to lure in and eliminate a lot of common checks and counters to say Choice Scarf Emboar such as Qwilfish, Alomomola. Quagsire, and Poliwrath, this isn't just useful for Emboar, its also useful for teammates that might struggle with these pokemon, as they might switch in to check Emboar and be damaged beyond repair, opening them up to a sweep by Emboar's teammate. Qwilfish still resists both of Emboar's STABs and has a low weight to offset Grass Knot, but Qwilfish's special bulk is really lacking, ensuring that Emboar can land a clean 2HKO with Fire Blast, doing over 60% guarenteed. Alomomola is always OHKO'd by Emboar's Focus Blast (bar missing) after Stealth Rock, and Grass Knot gets a guranteed KO on the heart fish too, quickly eliminating her. Poliwrath and Quagsire don't fare much better, with Poliwrath taking 75%+ from Emboar's Focus Blast and Quagsire being cleanly OHKO'd by Grass Knot and possibly OHKO'd by Focus Blast. Not even Slowking is 100% safe, with the standard spread being 2HKO'd after Stealth Rock, forcing it to switch out and regenerate. Another cool thing about Specsboar is that it's not as reliant on moves with drawbacks like Flare Blitz and Superpower, meaning it doesn't have to switch as much and never ends up KO'd by recoil. I used a Modest nature for the calcs to add some extra power and ensure the Grass Knot 2HKO vs Slowking as much as possible, but a Timid nature lets specsboar outrun adamant Absol and OHKO while resisting Sucker Punch. Anyways, here are some damage calcs to show exactly how the Pokemon i mentioned fare vs specsboar.

Emboar, with an impressive 100 base special attack (the same as Accelgor for the record), can counter some of his greatest checks with this set. With Stealth rock support he will almost always be able to 2 hit alomomola (252 SpA Emboar Hidden Power Grass vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Alomomola: 238-280 (44.56 - 52.43%) -- 83.98% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock) and Slowking (252+ Atk Emboar Wild Charge vs. 248 HP / 144 Def Slowking: 212-250 (53.94 - 63.61%) -- guaranteed 2HKO). Overheat is there as an incredibly powerful fire attack that is usable twice without switching thanks to the white herb.

as opposed to flare blitz

Okay, in the current meta, the one area in which Emboar excels is against hail teams due to it's excellent typing, powerul moves, and decent typing. To take complete advantage of his anti-hail typing, and the ladder's reckless sacrifice of Snover I propose the following set.

Stone Edge is chosen in the last slot over other moves as it allows perfect neutral coverage in the tier (I think). More specifically it hits, Altaria, Moltres and Druddigon hard outside of the sun, something that most Emboar's struggle with already. The speed investment is enough to outspeed neutral base 55's such as Crawduant, while speed-tying 16 speed Qwilfish, an important speed tier in RU. Life orb is chosen over heat rock, as Emboar has both the ability to force out opposing mons, and the defenses to set up sun more than once, and life orb is the necessary to provide Emboar with support. This set excels on bulky offensive teams that struggle with hail, but Emboar really appreciates wish support from something like Alomomola or Clefable, as life orb and flareblitz recoil add up pretty quickly. Lastly, and most importantly, fuck Hail.

As with most e-belt users, this set is used to bluff the scarf or band and then unexpectedly change moves to beat the next poke coming in. With these moves, it ohkos or 2hkos every single wall in the tier. Because it has a considerably higher atk stat than its spa stat in my eyes it is unnecessary to use a mixed set (other than the obvious hp grass) simply because it has pretty much the same coverage with special moves as with physical moves and by fully investing in atk it will generally do the same or more damage than if fully invested in spa.... Plus, using a set with both focus blast and fire blast will give me a panic attack...

Fire Blast and Superpower are mainstays, with Fire Blast over Flare Blitz in order to 1. surprise common switch ins and 2. actually 1HKO Steel-types such as Steelix and Tangrowth. Expert Belt does a pretty good job at bluffing in this case. Wild Charge, with the given EVs, 2HKOs the on-site Slowking w/out any hazards factoring in Leftovers which is nice. Grass Knot can be used in order to kill Rhydon, Alomomola, Poliwrath and Quagsire, but if Druddigon is being an issue than you can use Hidden Power Ice to nab a 2HKO on any non-specially defensive variants.
EVs outspeed Max Speed base 55s, the Attack EVs allow it to 2HKO 252/144 Slowking, and dumps the rest into Special Attack. Expert Belt is preferred but a Life Orb can work too...

This Emboar set is the only defensive one I've seen on the thread. It utilizes its decent bulk to spread burns and then take a lot of physical attacks. Will-o-Wisp does this semi-reliably. Scald provides a secondary burn source, as well as a major hit on Rhydon, a common Emboar switch into an expected Fire-type move. Flame Charge makes up for Emboar's slowness and lets it spread burns more efficiently, while Brick Break is the main STAB, because Hammer Arm cancels Flame Charge's boosts, and Superpower weakens Emboar's defense. The EVs were designed as follows:
Defense was maxed out with a positive nature
Emboar's HP gives it a Stealth Rock number
Speed outspeeds 0 Speed Sandslash so it can hit Sandslash first.

This set is pretty much akin to Mixed Blaziken in DPP UU as it uses Emboar's great special movepool and access to a powerful physical STAB move to break down defensive cores. Fire Blast is the main STAB on this set. It crushes Steelix and Tangrowth without a second thought while also putting a sizable dent into Qwilfish (it has a decent chance to 2HKO after SR) Superpower remains as Emboar's physical STAB move as it levels Cryogonal and Clefable. The stat drops are less of a detriment to this set as Emboar relies primarily on special attacks for this set. Grass Knot is a cool move since it rips apart Alomomola, Rhydon, and Poliwrath without much difficulty. Emboar can also 2HKO Slowking after SR + 1 layer of Spikes. The last slot is given to HP Ice. This allows Emboar to get past Druddigon (Specially Defensive ones can still survive though) It also allows Emboar to navigate past Altaria. Although it may be rare in RU, Altaria is typically a safe response to Emboar due to its resistance to Emboar's STAB moves and ability to take most of Emboar's other coverage moves well enough. If coverage on the Dragons isn't desired, one can opt to use Earthquake to better handle Lanturn and Qwilfish although the latter is dealt with well enough with Fire Blast. The EVs max out Emboar's Special Attack while also letting outspeed neutral base 55 Speed Pokemon that have fully invested in Speed while also tying with most defensive Qwilfish. The remaining EVs buff up the power of Superpower (and Earthquake if it gets used) A Rash nature is used so Superpower isn't gimped and Emboar is a very solid offensive check to Escavalier, Durant, and Absol, 3 dangerous physical attackers. Expert Belt is the preferred item choice since Emboar has great super effective coverage with this set and can bluff a choice item very effectively. However, since this Emboar doesn't use any moves that cause recoil, Life Orb is usable as it boosts the power of neutral attacks, in particular Fire Blast and Superpower. An alternate spread of 232 Atk / 252 SAtk / 24 Spd is plausible to outrun Lanturn and really ramp up the power of Superpower (and EQ) but is only really advised if you choose to use Earthquake over HP Ice.

44 Speed EVs let it outspeed min-speed Poliwrath, which is nice. 32 HP gives it a lefties number. 252+ SpAtk lets it smash things around. 140 Atk is all it needs to get the job done against most anything, it seems. It could be boosted for threats like Sigilyph, I suppose, but it seemed a good benchmark, doing enough to 2HKO Slowking 94% of the time after Rocks. The remaining 40 are stashed into SpDef, since Emboar has some decent bulk and ok resistances to Fire and Ice. It doesn't help the substitutes survive much, but they can survive Stallrein's Blizzards, Weezing's Thunderbolts, and an unboosted Stored Power from Sigilyph. Minor benefits, really. The only reason those EVs aren't in Speed or Atk is because more Atk doesn't net much difference, nor is there anything notable within reach speed-wise.

44 Speed EVs let it outspeed min-speed Poliwrath, which is nice. 32 HP gives it a lefties number. 252+ SpAtk lets it smash things around. 140 Atk is all it needs to get the job done against most anything, it seems. It could be boosted for threats like Sigilyph, I suppose, but it seemed a good benchmark, doing enough to 2HKO Slowking 94% of the time after Rocks. The remaining 40 are stashed into SpDef, since Emboar has some decent bulk and ok resistances to Fire and Ice. It doesn't help the substitutes survive much, but they can survive Stallrein's Blizzards, Weezing's Thunderbolts, and an unboosted Stored Power from Sigilyph. Minor benefits, really. The only reason those EVs aren't in Speed or Atk is because more Atk doesn't net much difference, nor is there anything notable within reach speed-wise.

Say hello to a mixed Emboar with a twist. Main goal is to either lead with Emboar or come in for a revenge kill and nuke the balls off someone with a Fire Gem boosted Overheat. Rest of the moveset is for coverage. EV spread helps out speed max speed Adamant Nature Bouffalant and speed tie with Qwilfish if it's trying to out speed the same. Max SAtk for maximum Overheat/Grass Knot DMG, remainder goes into Atk to boost Superpower/Wild Charge.

Honestly I would prefer to be able to use overheat twice than use it once more powerful than it needs to be, it's powerful enough already and you can always finish the pokemon off with another attack if it doesn't quite KO, but you are able to use overheat later in the battle as well.
