Hey all!

I know a lot of people get excited about this section of CaPs specifically. Jumbao has some great ideas for some wonderful flavour additions!

Legal Pokedex submissions must meet the following standards
  • Pokedex Entries must have flawless grammar. Smogon has a Grammar & Prose team that will help identify mistakes.
  • Pokedex Entries cannot be longer than 32 words.
  • Pokedex Entries can only contain the following characters:
    • Letters A-Z
    • Numbers 0-9
    • Dash (-)
    • Apostrophe (')
    • Period (.)
    • Comma (,)
    • Colon (:)
    • Semi-colon (;)
    • Space

Work In Progress (WIP) Pokedex Entries can be posted at any time for comments from the community.

No more than three WIP Pokedex Entries can be posted by any individual person through the entire course of the submission thread. This limit applies to ALL posts made by a single person, even if previous posts are edited or deleted. This limit is intended to curb the tendency for some submitters to spam the thread repeatedly with multiple Pokedex Entries. This detracts from other submissions and makes it difficult for commenters to survey the submission thread.

Do not bump your WIP Pokedex Entries by posting them repeatedly, or making minor wording changes. Bumping will result in the disqualification of all Pokedex Entries by the offender. Editing or deleting bump posts will not prevent disqualification.

Only ONE Final Submission can be made per person.

Pokedex Entry Final Submissions can only be posted after a CAP Moderator posts in the thread that final submissions are open. Any final submission posted prior to the Moderator notification post, will disqualify the submitter from the poll entirely. Even if the offending post is edited later or deleted, the submitter will still be disqualified for the remainder of the thread. This ensures that all submitters have equal opportunity to post final submissions without anyone unfairly "jumping the gun".

Pokedex entries Final Submissions must posted exactly in the following format and in the following exact order:
  • The first line of the post must have the words "Final Submission" in bold on it's own line. No other text may be included before the bold heading.
  • A blank line
  • "<Pokemon Name>, the <Species Name> Pokemon", with the Pokemon name and the Species Name in bold
  • A blank line
  • The Sun Pokedex Entry submission. Start with the letters "Sun" in bold, then a colon (:), and then the Pokedex entry.
  • A blank line
  • The Moon Pokedex Entry submission. Start with the letters "Moon" in bold, then a colon (:), and then the Pokedex entry.
  • A blank line
  • The Ultra Sun Pokedex Entry submission. Start with the letters "Ultra Sun" in bold, then a colon (:), and then the Pokedex entry.
  • A blank line
  • The Ultra Moon Pokedex Entry submission. Start with the letters "Ultra Moon" in bold, then a colon (:), and then the Pokedex entry.
Below the Final Submission you can post other comments, explanations, etc.

Example final submission:

Final Submission

Magearna, the Artificial Pokémon

Sun: This artificial Pokémon, constructed more than 500 years ago, can understand human speech but cannot itself speak.

Moon: Its mechanized body is merely a vessel. Its true self is its Soul-Heart, an artificial soul.

Ultra Sun: It synchronizes its consciousness with others to understand their feelings. This faculty makes it useful for taking care of people.

Ultra Moon: Built roughly 500 years ago by a scientist, the part called the Soul-Heart is the actual life-form.
Any Final Submission that does not follow the proper format will be disqualified.

Concept:
Drew said:
  • Name - Snow or Shine (or Sand)
  • Description - A Pokemon that abuses 2 weather conditions for different effects
  • Justification - Currently in CAP, there is only one form of weather that is really worth using: rain, and only one really type of weather abuser: offensive sweeper. This concept means to address both of these issues by creating a new niche for two weather conditions. This concept would fill the archetype of a weather abuser, but I feel it also fits into the Actualization category as it would also aim to create a new role for a weather abuser for 1 or more different weather conditions.
  • Questions To Be Answered
    • Why are hail, sun, and sand underrepresented in the current metagame?
    • What makes rain the best weather condition currently?
    • How can this CAP encourage the use of other weather conditions? What do hail, sun, and/or sand need? Sweepers? Setters? Walls?
    • What weather effects are underutilized? How can we successfully use these effects?
    • How can one Pokemon utilize different weather conditions for different effects and sets?
    • Should this Pokemon be able to function outside of weather-based teams? If so, what niche would it need to fulfill? If it sets it's own weather, is it enough to abuse the weather condition on its own?
  • Explanation - For those who don't fully see how a not-sweeper weather abuser could work, take Lileep in LC for example. Lileep, mainly back in BW and XY as sand is quite uncommon in SM, is on most sand teams, as it can abuse its Rock-typing to boost Special Defense, the passive damage from sand, and its access to Recover and Toxic to become a weather abusing wall. Another possible interaction would be running Ferrothorn on rain teams to semi-nullify its Fire weakness. Not only typings are underexplored though! There are many moves, items, and of course abilities that can be used to abuse different weather conditions in a way that no Pokemon really does currently.

Jumbao, the Everlasting Pokemon

Sun: Because of its long lifespan and ability to survive virtually anywhere, Jumbao is revered as a deity in some regions.

Moon: While Jumbao is normally a peaceful Pokemon, roughly touching the roots on its back will cause it to angrily and indiscriminately shoot gluey sap.

Ultra Sun: Jumbao is notable for its slow metabolism and easy-going, playful nature. As such, it's a popular exotic pet, especially among children.

Ultra Moon: Legend has it that Jumbao came to be after a man who achieved immortality was slain and buried under a desert tree.

Final Submission

Jumbao, the Longevity Pokémon

Sun: It is protected by bark as thick and tough as steel. Supposedly, if left to its own devices, it can live for over 30,000 years.

Moon: This calm, honorable, and very heavy Pokémon will refuse to fight anybody weaker than itself. Bird Pokémon frequently rest in its branches for protection.

Ultra Sun: Its trunk stores huge amounts of water to see through the dry season. If threatened, it will spray its sticky sap with devastating force.

Ultra Moon: Wherever Jumbao settles down, it creates a beautiful garden which it defends with its life. With four powerful roots, it's much faster than it looks.

I only needed to modify my dex entries a little for my final submission, just to make the flavor a little more sensible. Here's the rundown on each dex entry:
- Sun: Baobabs are protected by very thick bark and are resilient to the elements, and Jumbao has the defensive stats to go with this. Baobabs have been known to live as long as 1275 years, but I decided to one-up that and also Wartortle's D/P/P entry which states that "It is said to live 10,000 years" - it's only fitting that something based on a tree that can outlive darn near anything would supposedly last several times as long!
- Moon: Fits Jumbao's Fairy typing, sumo basis, and generally mellow nature. The branches of actual baobabs really are used by birds as safe nesting sites, hence the bit with bird Pokemon gathering around Jumbao like Snow White's birds.
- US: Relates to the water storage aspects of actual baobabs, and also Jumbao's main form of attack.
- UM: Modified this one slightly to fit the movepool and its nurturing behavior (especially Rototiller, Flower Shield, Wish, and Natural Gift). The second sentence refers to its 96 Speed stat.

Jumbao, the Ardent Pokémon

Sun: Despite its bulk, it is agile. It will vigorously chase away people or Pokémon that damage the natural environment.

Moon: It seems to take a childlike enthusiasm in rehabilitating areas devastated by Gyarados or Tyranitar.

Ultra Sun: It can absorb water vapour directly from clouds. The plains where Jumbao makes its home are blessed with fine weather.

Ultra Moon: In the Alola region, people often recommend sleeping under a Jumbao as a cure for minor illnesses.

It seemed like a fun idea to try and build each of these Pokédex entries on some aspect of what we've already decided about Jumbao. Here's what I'm going for:
- Jumbao is the Ardent Pokémon both literally and figuratively - it has access to Drought and Flame Burst, which gives it a literal association with heat and flame, and since its delightful design also makes it look like a Pokémon that enjoys having a good time, I get a nice link into the metaphorical connotation of 'ardent' as 'passionate' or 'enthusiastic'.
- The Sun entry plays on Jumbao's deceptively high Speed stat, and suggests what use it might get out of being so brisk.
- The Moon entry touches on the two terrain moves in Jumbao's Egg Moves, as well as Rototiller - the idea being that it can use these ground effects as ways to revivify damaged natural areas. The idea that it has an opposing influence to Gyarados and Tyranitar also pairs nicely with its favourable type match-ups against those two species (admittedly not ideal with normal Gyarados, but just fine against Mega Gyarados).
- The Ultra Sun entry references Drought, and proposes a way that it might bring about sunny weather: by absorbing the clouds that would otherwise make things overcast. (It's no coincidence that the good-weather Pokédex entry goes with Ultra Sun, either.)
- The Ultra Moon entry is a play on the presence of Wish and Healing Wish in Jumbao's movepool - it can heal its teammates, so perhaps it can heal people too. I've made this a folk remedy in Alola simply because, of all the main series regions to date, Alola has the most Jumbao-appropriate climate.

Jumbao, the Sumo Tree Pokemon

Sun: Soil tilled by Jumbao is always packed with nutrients. Bolder farmers will challenge it in sumo to try to earn its help.

Moon: The sap that it fires from its cannons has a slightly spicy flavour, and is used to create a variety of local stews and curries.

Ultra Sun: Jumbao's shimenawa is said to be able to cure those afflicted by the curse of Ninetales. However, attempting to grab it without permission will result in the curse lasting another thousand years.

Ultra Moon: Before a sumo bout, Jumbao like to copy the movements of its opponent to mentally prepare themselves. Sometimes when Jumbao fight each other, they get caught in an endless loop.

---

Sun: I wanted a clean reference to Jumbao being good with farming stuff, so here we go! The idea of slightly reckless humans attempting to sumo wrestle a Jumbao is one that amuses me in a slightly weird manner, ergo...
Moon: Look I'm trying really hard to not make a "Jumbaolaya" joke recipe y'all have got me on good behavior here :P
Ultra Sun: Gotta pay tribiute to the OG OU Drought Mon! Ninetales' curse is mentioned in US, so that's where this one ended up.
Ultra Moon: I wanted to poke fun at the idea of Trace tracing Trace tracing Trace tracing... alright, point proven. Jumbao has a couple of copying techniques and the idea is cute.

Jumbao, the Gentle Giant Pokemon

Sun: Jumbao are natural gardeners, creating and preserving little slices of paradise in the most unlikely of places. They welcome the lost and weary, but are fierce gatekeepers against those who wish harm.

Moon: A compassionate lifesaver, Jumbao often live in deserts with the sole purpose of finding people and Pokemon that are lost and dehydrated, and rescuing them. They preserve oases for these poor travelers.

Ultra Sun: This Pokemon's behavior indicates seasons. During a wet season, Jumbao spray sticky sap out of their arm cannons to spar, but preserve water during dry spells, opting to sumo wrestle instead.

Ultra Moon: Some beaches and resorts in Alola don't even hire lifeguards, as the local Jumbao can rescue and revive people faster and more safely than any human, whether they be drowning or dehydrated.

------------------

I wanted to really work with the gentleness and kindness of Jumbao in these entries, while still acknowledging their fierce fighting spirit. And of course, what description ties in kindness, ferocity, and Jumbao's massive size better than Gentle Giant?
Sun and Moon keep up this idea while tying in together, explaining how Jumbao create their own oases in the desert, and then save those who are lost, taking them to the oases. However, they still have to be able to defend it against the ferocity of the desert and its inhabitants by matching and sometimes exceeding that ferocity themselves.
Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon were more modern takes on Jumbao, explaining their more relevant placements in the modern world. Ultra Sun explains how their different fighting styles can be attributed to seasonal cycles, while Ultra Moon gives a humorous look at ways modernity can save money by just letting Pokemon do their thing. I like to imagine some tuxes up in a meeting room in a resort, wondering how they could cut costs. One of them watches a Jumbao burst from the foliage and save a drowning man before the lifeguard can even reach the water. He then speaks up and says "You should probably come see this." And the resort never hired another lifeguard ever again. :>

Jumbao, the Giga Tree Pokemon

SUN: Jumbao use their sizable build to attack with sumo-like moves. They usually spar against each other but once in a while train with Hariyama.

MOON: The tighter the grip on its sash, the richer in vitality Jumbao is. When it perishes, the sash loosens away and flies into the wind.

USUN: From their arms, Jumbao pump out a sweet sap with enough force to dent a cruiser. This sap is apparently great for the skin, though.

UMOON: Jumbao can live for over 1000 years, earning them the title as "Beings of Life". Many believe just being around one leaves one feeling revitalized.

Jumbao, the Tree of Life Pokemon

Sun: The sight of a Jumbao brings pure joy into the hearts of lost souls within the desert, as they are guaranteed water, sustenance and a warm, loving welcome.

Moon: At the break of dawn, Jumbao partake in bouts of sumo combat. It is said that the first human wrestlers were taught by Jumbao via mimicking their movements.

Ultra Sun: Jumbao are excellent gardeners. They carefully regulate how much sunlight their gardens receive to let them blossom into magnificent oases.

Ultra Moon: They shoot powerful streams of pink sap during combat. It is this same sap that, ironically, grants Jumbao its magical healing properties.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So each of my dex subs tackle (sumo pun) different aspects of Jumbao's flavor. The Sun dex neatly wraps up how Jumbao is seen as a beacon to strays that wander in the desolate, unforgiving desert. Moon's reference ties into its sumo "roots" (tree pun) and also has a well placed Trace nod in mimicking. Ultra Sun handles a Drought reference and a Rototiller / Grassy Terrain nod in one go. Its also funny in the fact that its the Ultra Sun dex that deals with its ability Drought. Finally, Ultra Moon highlights everybody's favorite flavor aspect of Jumbao - its sap cannons. I felt that making the sap cannons the way how Jumbao enacts its various healing moves was very fitting, seeing that the sap of real life baobab have medicinal properties.

Jumbao, the Land Keeper Pokemon

Sun: Natural-born horticulturists, Jumbao grow beautiful fields and gardens using their nutritious sap. This sap can sustain lush plant growth even in areas with arid climates and barren soil.

Moon: Jumbao are instantly recognizable even from a distance, their massive barrel-shaped trunks capable of storing thousands of gallons of fresh water. They can easily outweigh the largest known Pokemon, Wailord!

Ultra Sun: Jumbao will bravely face any intruder who dares to harm their gardens, using their arm cannons to fire hot sap that can combust on contact when hot and sunny.

Ultra Moon: After the sun sets, Jumbao engage in friendly sumo wrestling competitions with one another. They can sense the presence of other Jumbao, so darkness doesn't inhibit their nighttime activities.

----------

I decided to call Jumbao the "Land Keeper" Pokemon due to its association with growing and protecting plants, having moves like Rototiller, Grassy Terrain, and Flower Shield. The Sun entry talks about this more, as well as mentioning its sap and implying that it lives in dry desert-like areas like real baobabs do. The Moon entry talks about Jumbao's size and shape, which are the most distinctive traits of real baobabs. The Ultra Sun entry talks more about their land keeper role as well as mentioning their sap arm cannons and referring to the fact that Jumbao learns Flame Burst, while just teasing its Drought ability. The Ultra Moon entry talks about the sumo wrestler aspect of its behavior, importantly labeling it "friendly" to just graze by it being a Fairy-type and not a Fighting-type.

Jumbao, the Big Tree Pokemon

Sun: This species of Pokemon stays idle all night to preserve energy. However, in the daytime, it lumbers around its habitat searching for people it can help.

Moon: Jumbao can survive days without water due to the massive amounts of water it stores inside itself. However, it can still run as fast as Haxorus and vastly outpowers it.

Ultra Moon: This peaceful species of Pokemon spends most of its life staying still so as to preserve the energy it needs to move around, leading people to not be able to detect them.

Ultra Sun: Jumbao dislike to brawl with other species of Pokemon. However, if needed to, it will throw its weight around to show its superiority.

I envisioned this pokemon as a peaceful pokemon that spends its spare time to meditate. Hence the above entries.
If it is ok, please give constructive criticism.

<crosses fingers>
<takes a deep breath>

Let's hope I don't screw up this time

WIP II

Pretty much all of my dex entries are the same (aside from a few minor fixes) but I'd like to have a new Moon entry.

Jumbao, the Everlasting Pokemon

Sun: Because of its long lifespan and ability to survive virtually anywhere, Jumbao is revered as a deity in some regions.

Moon: In arid regions, Jumbao are often employed by Pokemon Centers in place of Chansey due to their ability to supply water in addition to healing.

Ultra Sun: Jumbao is notable for its slow metabolism and easy-going, playful nature. Because of this, it's a popular exotic pet, especially among children.

Ultra Moon: Legend has it that Jumbao came to be after a man who achieved immortality was slain and buried under a desert tree.

I decided to change my Moon entry to capitalize on the fact that Jumbao has access to healing moves such as Wish. Also, baobabs are known for basically being living water jugs, and Jumbao looks like a big friend.

WIP

Jumbao, the Spirited Pokemon

Sun: Always jovial and cooperative, Jumbao live alongside people and pokemon alike in harmony. Due to the amount of water its body can store, fireman of Alola are even more helped by the presence of a Jumbao than most powerful Water-type pokemon.

Moon: Nobody really knows where wild Jumbao originate from, but archaeologists have found glyphs that look exactly like the pattern on a Jumbao's mask in important ruins the world over.

Ultra Sun: Whenever a Lucario catches sight of a Jumbao, friend or foe, it immediately bows out of respect. It's hypothesized that this is because of the intensity of Jumbao's aura, since no pokemon but Lucario and Riolu interact with it in this way.

Ultra Moon: There isn't a single recorded instance of a Jumbao seriously injuring a person or pokemon. Doctors suspect this is due to Jumbao's intellect, judging by the aftermath of any soured encounters.

Pretty messy for now but I wanted to at least try out this step out the process as well. Plus, I couldn't pass up submitting "Spirited" the second that occurred to me :P

Jumbao, the Baobab Pokemon

Sun: Their bodies are filled with sap, which makes them incredibly heavy. if you can topple a Jumbao over, you'll immediately gain its respect.

Moon: Jumbao's roots sense the emotions of those around it, so don't be alarmed if you find a Jumbao playfully mimicking your expression.

Ultra Sun: It uses its arm cannons to fire sap stored inside its body. Its leaves are so rough that the friction will sometimes light the bursts on fire.

Ultra Moon: Its sap-filled body is very heavy. When Jumbao gather under the midday sun to dance and fight, the whole desert trembles.

Jumbao, the Yokozuna Pokemon

Sun: Jumbao spend the warmer seasons training their mind and body for the harsh weather to come, during which they protect their ecosystem from predators and catastrophe.

Moon: When aged and weary, Jumbao prepare for themselves a sanctuary in which they live out their last moments peacefully away from the world.

Ultra Sun: These Pokemon are known to lead extravagant dances to show their appreciation and praise for good weather. One would be mindful to stay out of their way during these rituals.

Ultra Moon: Jumbao select their leader through test of strength tournaments every other winter, and the winner is responsible for leading the community to good harvests.

WIP

Jumbao, the Spirit Tree Pokemon

Sun: Their good nature causes them to aid weary desert travelers with water and fruit. Healthier adventurers receive dance performances.

Moon: Jumbao's flowers only bloom at night. The pink sap it shoots from its cannon-like arms is thought to be what gives these flowers their healing properties.

Ultra Sun: Jumbao's trunk is so large that native Alolans developed a saying about it: 'Friendship is like a Jumbao, nobody can embrace it alone.'

Ultra Moon: Its white roots can sense the life force of others. This power is strengthened through shoving matches with other Jumbao.

Moon and Ultra Sun entries are the two primarily based on real-life things. Real baobab flowers only bloom at night. The pips (pun unintentional) of the fruit are also thought by bushmen to have healing properties. The saying in the Ultra Sun entry is based on an actual saying from the Ewe people of Togo: "Wisdom is like a baobab, no one individual can embrace it."

All of these sound freaking amazing, but the Ultra-Moon entry doesn't really scream Pokédex Entry to me. Other that that, though, I hope your submission is picked!

Jumbao, the ____ Pokémon

Sun: Jumbao is able to store large amounts of energy in its body; often releasing it in the form of heat.

Moon: While it is most adept at wrestling, Jumbao is able to imitate its opponent's fighting style.

Ultra Sun: Jumbao is a very capable healer able to quickly restore its energy with photosynthesis and to patch its wounds with sand or dirt.

Ultra Moon:

-----

The first two are references to Jumbao's abilities Drought and Trace. Sun and US both got entries relating to the sun. Ultra Sun's entry is in reference to its healing moves, specifically synthesis and shore up. Using sand to patch its wounds is my justification for shore up specifically as it is known as "Sand Gather" in Japanese.
