Mega Mirrors (Slate 16.5 - Discussion)

Yoshiblaze, would you be okay with making the upcoming slates alternate between the usual and doing this? As far as I'm aware, this has only been done for those featured in the first slate, Abomasnow and Absol, and I'm curious on how the submitters would try to buff the already existing pokemon without changing the taste behind it.

This was originally the plan, but the first buffing slate had extremely low participation (only 2 subs for Abomasnow and 3 more Absol iirc), which was especially concerning for a new Pet Mod at the time. The current plan is now to do all of the buffing slates after all of the normal slates

This thing looks really interesting. Intimidate in its pre-Mega form + 105 Defense + Fur Coat means that any physical attacker without a super effective STAB move can really only dream of even touching this thing. And with that Steel/Fairy-typing, you might not even have a super effective move. This means that Mega Mawile Y can get up rocks super easily and mess with thing with Super Fang, Knock Off, and Pain Split. It's Special Defense is certainly suspect, however, and it is very passive without a gimmicky Bulky Swords Dance set or something.

This is the definition of an offensive Stealth Rock. A lot of OU's Stealth Rockers and forms of hazard control have to fear this. Landorus gets easily 2HKOed by Draco Meteor, Heatran and Excadrill are vaporized by Earth Power, Z-Move Tornadus gets OHKOed if it switches into Draco with Rocks up, Ferrothorn and Mega Scizor get Fire Blasted, Tapu Koko has to choose between Defogging and dying or getting damage off, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Very few rockers and Defoggers (only Clefable, Chansey, Rotom-Wash, and Mega Diancie and Mamoswine, though the latter two cannot switch-in safely) willingly want to toy with Mega Garchomp Y, making it effective at getting rocks up on the opponent's side of the field and keeping rocks off your side of the field and punishing your opponent for trying to change that.
Oh, I guess you could use it on a Sun team, but I'd rather use SD+Rockium Garchomp + Mega Charizard Y instead, personally.

Mega Heracross Y is very simple. You weaken the opponent's team a little, you get in, Mega Evolve, SD up, and clean house. Simple as that. Perfect accuracy Megahorn is very spammable and Close Combat patches up most of its resists. It's coverage depends on what you want to beat: Meteor Mash hits Clefable, Mega Latias Y, and Mega Gengar X, Stone Edge hits the Charizards, Zapdos, and Tornadus-T, and Earthquake hits Toxapex before it can Haze you.

Yeah, it doesn't take a genius to figure out how could that is. We're lucky that it has mediocre 80/90 bulk on the physical side and that it has a very meh ability or else it would be blatantly broken. However, I wouldn't be too surprised if this is the first thing to be suspected.

Strong Jaw-boosted STABs in Thunder Fang and Crunch are of course nice and all, but the thing that really makes Manectric is its Speed tier. Being the same as Manectric Y's, at 135 Manectric speed ties with Alakazam X and both Lopunnies and outspeeds Gyarados Y, Heracross Y, Glalie X, Latios X, and everything below. Nothing in that list really appreciates taking a Thunder Fang or Crunch, making Manectric very important in the speed battle and kind of anti-meta, really.

Flavor (Optional): Unlike many other mega stones, Medichamite Y was man-made instead of naturally created. The scientists originally created this stone with boosting Medicham's psychic powers through boosting its brain. However, the results shocked the world. In addition to improving its psychic powers, the excess energy from Mega Evolution caused its mind to overload with electricity, which flow through its whole body along with psychic energy, which protect it from taking damage from the high voltage in its nervous system (and from the environment as a result). The overload of electricity also gives it an irritating headache, making it harder for it to concentrate psychic energy into attacks. (Hence, why it loses its psychic typing but not the ability to use psychic type attacks.)
Competitive Description: Magic Guard physical attacker! It can exploit Wild Charge and High Jump Kick freely as STAB without recoil thanks to Magic Guard. It also gets coverage such as Ice Punch and Poison Jab to get pass Landorus-Thedian, Latias-Mega-Y, and Fairies. While it lacks set-up and Intimidate still hurts it, it's power should allow it to be a fine addition to OU.

Flavor (Optional): Mega Evolution has the potential of enhancing a Pokemon's existing abilities, like allowing Charizard to summon the power of the sun to aid its fiery presence in battle. In Pidgeot's case, its mind has changed due to Mega Evolution, becoming much more hostile and merciless. At the same time, its body becomes more aerodynamic while its wing muscles develop, allowing it to blast into the sky with just one flap of its wings. It, oddly enough, has less stamina than its mega counterpart, but makes up for it with wing strength being able to travel about much faster as well. Many Pidgeot-Mega-X actually have small races with Latios and Latias in the sky, even able to win at times.
Competitive Description: Hustle Aerial Ace for that sweet power without accuracy issues, or go all out with Return and Brave Bird to wall break like mad. The accuracy trade-off is a bit unappealing especially with no boosting move, but the high attack and speed certainly can make up for it.

Competitive Description: To note, Pinsir has Swords Dance, Bug Bite, and Storm Throw, along with coverage in Bulldoze and priority in Feint, Quick Attack, and the newly added Mach Punch, making Technician an interesting ability to give it. While it still suffered from a crowded speed tier and is easily outsped by a lot, especially Scarfers, it has the power to give its counters payse with its power and access to pirority.

Competitive Description: Pidgeot's movepool makes it a perfect candidate to make use of Reckless ability. Brave Bird and Double-Edge are STABs, while Flare Blitz lets it hit Steel-types hard. Increased physical bulk lets it shrug off priority moves. Its moves wear it down quickly but if it gets a free turn, it can also use Roost to last longer.

Competitive Description: Spam Refrigerate Boomburst to win. Bug Buzz gives it a Bug STAB while Focus Blast and Hidden Power are its only special coverage moves. I gave it min-maxed stats as it is really held back by its awful defensive typing (double weaknesses to Fire and Rock). On the flip side, its typing gives it useful resistances to Ice and Ground. Its STABs + Focus Blast cover a lot offensively. A bit of a one-trick pony but a very good one at what it does.

Competitive Description: Mega Pinsir Y is a powerful special attacker that has near perfect coverage thanks to its ability Tinted Lens. Nasty Plot grants it the capacity to break past walls. A 125 base speed stat also means it outpaces plenty of common Pokemon.

Competitive Description: A fast Steel special attack is currently unheard of in the metagame, so Medicham holds a fantastic and unique niche all on its own. Sheer Force allows its STABs and its coverage options to hit very hard.

Flavor (Optional): After being brought to the Sinnoh region, Pidgeot faced a problem - they could not get the best food in the region. This is because in order to get it, they have to directly compete with Staraptor for food, and Staraptor is stronger and bulkier, while being near evenly matched in terms of speed. This left Pidgeot unable to compete, and they were furious. After a trainer caught one particularly furious Pidgeot and attempted to Mega Evolve it, its pure rage and frustration warped the Mega Evolution energies and allowed it to become Mega Pidgeot X, a ferocious and determined physical brawler.
Competitive Description: Tough Claws boosted Brave Bird and Return off 140 Attack hits very hard, and Mega Pidgeot X carries Superpower to dent Steel type switchins who think they can wall it.

Justification: In a sharp contrast to its other forme, Mega Medicham Y is a strong special attacker that can serve as both a wallbreaker and a pivot. This set’s main niche lies in its ability Psychic Surge, bolstering it’s STAB and aiding teammates, while also possessing a wide special movepool including Focus Blast, Shadow Ball, and Energy Ball. It can augment its two main roles by running either Nasty Plot or Volt Switch, though it runs into issues as it can only run four moves.

Justification: Mega Pidgeot X is a terrifying bulky attacker, allowing it to play multiple roles on a team. Obviously, it can hit hard with its base 120 Attack and 111 Speed, alongside new access to Close Combat and Rock Slide, but it also is far bulky than its normal forme. This is only magnified by Intimidate and Roost, giving Mega Pidgeot X a longevity most offensive threat do not have.

Although its HP is lacking, 65/130/150 defenses are fantastic, especially when considering it ignores secondary effects through Shield Dust. Mega Pinsir Y can use Stealth Rock to be a very effective hazard setter, or serve as a tank thanks to strong STABs and coverage.

On top of this, Pidgeot can force physical attackers to take this risk via Taunt and its good speed for a wall. Mega Pidgeot X also has reliable recovery in Roost, and support options in Defog, Whirlwind, and Tailwind. It can also act as a gimmicky stall breaker like Mega Pidgeot Y, with Refresh or Taunt, Work Up, Roost, and Beak Blast.

Competitive Description: Magic Guard physical attacker! It can exploit Wild Charge and High Jump Kick freely as STAB without recoil thanks to Magic Guard. It also gets coverage such as Ice Punch and Poison Jab to get pass Landorus-Thedian, Latias-Mega-Y, and Fairies. While it lacks set-up and Intimidate still hurts it, it's power should allow it to be a fine addition to OU.

As the guy who created this Mega, my thought process on this pokemon, as mentioned was to shine in a special place, stallbreaking. With Recover, Substitute, Power-Up Punch and Magic Guard. This mega can be a nightmare for stall to deal with. Nothing that normally tanks High Jump Kicks like taking Wild Charge as Medicham hides behind his substitute. It can also shine on offense, with Electric Terrain support it can be a huge pain to fight with good speed, power and coverage.

Since the slate has not changed, I figured I'd be able to write at least a little bit about the newest three Megas. All of them have a definite niche, although they face some competition among other Pokémon and Megas.

Probably the most simple of the new Megas, Medicham Y can run a decent all out attacker set with perfect neutral coverage (minus Shedinja) in High Jump Kick, Wild Charge, and Ice Punch and fantastic Speed. Just like its other forme, it can break through Toxapex well, but also matches up well with Flying-types including Tornadus-T, Celesteela, Zapdos, Pelliper, and Landorus-T with Ice Punch. Obviously, Magic Guard, gives this another option as a stallbreaker, especially given the stiff competition for wallbreakers. Definitely a unique and usable Fighting-type, although it is probably not the strongest option.

Probably the Mega I think is the strongest out of the three. Mega Pidegeot X jumped out at me as less of a stall breaker, but far more as a defensive or more bulky offensive Pokémon. Thanks to its base 135 Defense, Pointed Plumage, and Beak Blast, Mega Pidgeot X has little to fear from most physical attackers without Stone Edge or Rock Slide, letting invest heavily in its Attack and Special Defense. Because of its bulk, it can be an incredible Defog user, distinguishing itself from Tornados-T due to its far superior bulk and access to more reliable recovery. The last slot can be filler, and can be adjusted along with the EV spreads to change up Mega Pidgeot X's role. This is a really scary Pokémon that I could see on both balance and stall teams alike.

My primary goal in this Mega was creating a Stealth Rock setter, that while very strong defensively, also had an offensive presence, in part inspiring by Stealth Rock setters in other tiers such as Primal Groudon or Hippowdown. Both sets listed above use different methods to aid in achieving this goal: the first uses Swords Dance and its bulk to pressure other hazard setters and removers, while the second uses focuses mor on its support move pool. Definitely exploitable, but a strong choice for bulkier teams.

Honestly, I don't see too much of a reason to use the Medichamite Y over the Medichamite, but that doesn't mean that Mega Medicham Y doesn't have merit. Its 110 Speed is pretty good to have and is one of the main weakenesses of Mega Medicham X. Someone expecting the X Mega and has a speed tier between 101 and 109, like Kartana, may be in for a very rude awakening. Another great thing about Mega Medicham Y is Magic Guard, meaning that hazards won't chip it over time and it can absorb enemy Toxics. The latter makes it a pretty good stallbreaker, especially since it threatens the top phazer in Toxapex with a boosted Wild Charge and at that point can't be burned by Scald. At the end of day, we know that both Medichams are a nightmare for stall teams and, even scarier, for very different reasons.

Mega Pidgeot X is a physical attacker's worst nightmare. Its bulk, residual damage from Pointed Plumage, and burns from Beak Blast mean that common physical attackers like Kartana, Tapu Bulu, Mega Scizor X, Mega Charizard X (without rocks up), Mega Heracross Y, and Mega Alakazam X are stopped in their tracks, especially if they're Choiced. This set opts for maximized physical defense so it can beat the physical attackers it's supposed to beat more easily, especially if they try to set up while you Beak Blast or Taunt them. Mega Pidgeot X is a bit tough to use and a few physical attackers like Mega Mawile X can break through it fairly easily, but in the right hands, this is one huge annoyance for sweepers.

This thing is kinda weird. It has the stats and typing (to an extent) to be a great wall, though with few support options and no reliable recovery, that's not really its best use. Instead, Mega Pinsir Y is best at being a strong bulky Stealth Rocker, like God of Llamas intended. Its STABs in Earthquake and X-Scissor along with coverage in Stone Edge allow it to threaten a lot of the tier's best hazard control: EQ for Mega Aggron Y, Excadrill, Mega Diancie X, Tapu Koko, and Rotom-Wash before mega evolving, X-Scissor for Mega Latias X, and Stone Edge for Zapdos. Swords Dance also allows it to threaten Gliscor and Rotom-Wash after Mega Evolving with Stone Edge. In this regard, it's similar to Garchomp and Mega Garchomp Y, but trading speed for bulk.

Competitive Description: An offensive behemoth in contrast to classic Mega Sableye's defensive prowess. Its Water STAB, Liquidation, hits hard while its Dark STABs have utility such as Sucker Punch and Knock Off. Water Bubble gives it some defensive utility in form of a double Fire resistance. In spite of those, Mega Sableye is very frail and isn't that fast, so I don't think it will be too overpowered.

Competitive Description: A defensive pivot that forces switches thanks to the combination of immense bulk and Cursed Body. Its low Speed helps it bring in a teammate with U-Turn and isn't that bothersome thanks to Roost.

Flavor (Optional): Wild Sableye become increasingly more vicious, crafty, and evil the further down they live in their caverns, with the deepest ones often only venturing to the surface to steal and corrupt other Mega stones for their own use. In its new form, Mega Sableye Y uses its power to become nearly invisible, matching both its surroundings and stealing the souls of other Pokémon. It and its fellow powered up Sableye are the best thieves ever known.

Justification: While its stats would make it seem like it outclassed by many other Pokémon, Mega Sableye Y has a variety of additional factors that make it one of the best revenge killers in the metagame. Chief among these is Illusion, an ability that allows Mega Sableye Y to play mind games with its opponents alongside moves such as Spectral Thief, Knock Off, Shadow Sneak, Sucker Punch, Will'O'Wisp, and U-turn. Of course, it still retains the same terrible bulk it had prior without a good defensive ability, and is rather weak for an offensive Pokémon. Additionally, Illusion only works if it switches out after Mega Evolving, limiting its effectiveness.

Flavor (Optional): Sableye get by with their favourite diet of stones and crystals, and as a result, many of the stones undigested by this Pokemon become part of its body, surfacing and staying on its skin. Through the power given off by the mega stone, the minerals inside its body and hardens around its skin, especially around its hands, causing them to become extremely sharp around its claws. It last gets a massive boost in its body strength and sight, allowing it to hunt for days without rest and even see in the dark, making for great thieves if they end up inside a city, though there they fight against any Weavile they encounter, typically slaying and eating their corpses without a worry thanks to its power. In the wild, they attack freely and without mercy, hunting down and killing Carbink without mercy. (Sun Pokedex entry)
Competitive Description: Bisharp with a better speed, no Swords Dance and Defiant in exchange for Elemental Punches and Tough Claws. Its status movepool is still the annoyance it will always be, with Hone Claws, Will-o-Wisp, Taunt, and so on. That, and U-turn, also allow it to be unique from other Tough Claw Megas, with it able to pull of a support role with pivoting abilities.
