If you have an encounter on day time and leave the 3DS on sleep mode, will Dusk balls work when it becomes night time?

I know, I'm asking mainly because of berries that are "exclusive" to large berry piles (Kee, Apicot, Maranga, etc)

Do we know when it is calculated that a berry pile is small or large? I've tried some soft resetting before flying to a location that a pile is but no change.
