I misspoke. W8 PC is in fact connected through LAN, and setting up the connection there worked, or at least passed a connection test. Not optimal as I have to be at PC to use it, but 100% better than not working at all. Thanks for the suggestion!

No, I am using a laptop that isn't directly connected to the router. Husband's computer (XP) is hooked up to that. Laptop is running 7 and creates hotspot but doesn't let 3DS connect to it. Tried on my own desktop (running 8) and the 3DS connects to it, but not to the Internet from there...
