How does it prevent defog and rapid spin?

In the sample teams thread, there is an Excadrill with Steel Beam. I thought it was a super at first but it had a naive nature. What is the purpose of Steel Beam over a physical attack?

I suppose but then you'd have to spend the next turn to recycle or switch out and find the opportunity to recycle later. Seems easier to just use Recover later w/o sacrificing Leftovers and Thick Fat.

Is there a benefit to using Ripen+Recycle+Sitrus over just Recover? To me it sounds like sacrificing an item and ability to get the same effect.

Is it confirmed that Obstruct blocks status moves too? I ask because it's similar to King's Shield and King's Shield doesn't block status moves.

I have a question that pertains to the Murkrow/Staryu/Mienfoo core. In it it says Staryu has recover as a recovery option but there is no way to get Staryu at level 5 w/ Recover so how does that work?
