Other Tier 35 Pokes-- September 2025

35 Pokes is hosting our own Trios tournament!

Styled after the very succesful recent NDAM Trios tour, which we were generously included in, our version of the trios tournament will feature past 35 Pokes metas as the playable formats. Which metas will be included? That's for you to decide! The first step in that process is to use this form to nominate your favorite metas, and the ones with the most nominations will be put to a final community vote to decide which formats will be used for the final tournament. More details about signups and voting will be released after nominations close, which is in a little bit under 24 hours!

Signups for the 35 Trios tournament will begin on Monday, December 2nd and end on Sunday, December 8th at 11:59pm PST (gmt-8).

If you’re interested in finding teammates for the tournament, a specific space has been set aside in our discord specifically for this purpose, #looking-for-trios. Teams will consist of 3 players, each of whom will play one of the above metagames for the duration of the tournament!

Clarification: You are highly encouragedto form a trio with teammates of your choosing before signup close on Sunday, December 8th at 11:59pm. You will be permitted to sign up as an individual free agent; free agents will be placed into a trio at random, as space allows, at the hosts’ discretion. More details about this will be made available once signups are posted, but please keep in mind that the best (and preferred) way for you to participate in this tournament is to find your own trio!!

POKEMON ANALYSIS: ROSERADE
Roserade successfully establishes it's niche in the December metagame as a threatening sacrifice lead, utility support and potential cleaner thanks to it's great role compression, multitude of useful moves, Grass/Poison typing, above average Speed and Special Attack stats and choice of ability between the Status-Absorbing Natural Cure or the punishing Poison point. Some remarkable examples of Roserade's capabilities include: spreading hazards with Spikes and Toxic Spikes, providing status support with Stun Spore, Sleep Powder, Toxic and Aromatherapy, access to STAB Sludge Bomb and Energy Ball, and, on top that, access to weather dependent recovery in Synthesis, valuable qualities few of December's chosen can replicate. In practice, it can wall and check Milotic and Primarina, and threaten big damage on Guzzlord, Ribombee, water-types, miscellaneous Pokémon and switch-ins with STAB Sludge Bomb and Energy Ball/Giga Drain, plus access to Dazzling Gleam and Shadow Ball. However, Roserade faces significant competition from Celebi and Ribombee thanks to their similar options and roles, can struggle to fit everything it wants to use on a single moveset and is checked by various Pokemons such as Celebi, Yanmega, Chandelure, Ice Types, Lokix, Magmortar, Physical hits and Psychic coverage, which limit how splashable, useful and longevous it can be. What truly sets Roserade apart from it's competition is it's unique access to both Sleep Powder and Entry Hazards, further cementing it's presence as a playmaking lead. If you can fit this Rose Pokemon in your team, it is almost guaranteed to do something useful.
*Footnote: Dazzling Gleam is a recent development due to Okidogi's ban. Before Dogi's ban, Roserade always opted for Extrasensory which would consistently OHKO most Dogi sets, provided Roserade had sufficient SPA Investment and Dogi wasn't all in on SPD.

December 2024 Tiering Survey Results

Competitiveness and Balance: 5.95/10
1734129168870.png

Enjoyment: 6.95/10
1734129186789.png

The numbers are slightly down from what they were in October, though the council consider the enjoyment numbers to still be within acceptable parameters. We are satisfied with the playerbase enjoying the current metagame. Competitiveness and balance is always a controversial one, and we have taken steps, which will be mentioned down below to try and alleviate the issues that the playerbase is having. Despite slightly above average competitiveness and balance, players do enjoy the current meta so that's all we are hoping for.

:jolteon:Jolteon:jolteon: 3.05/5
1734129390271.png

In regards to the responses given for Jolteon, over half of the voters wanted some sort of tiering action and 9/20 of the voters wanting a Jolteon suspect. The council took initiative and decided to hold a vote on Jolteon whether to quickban it or suspect it and with a resounding 7 members voting for a quickban, Jolteon was subsequently quickbanned and replaced by Carracosta. We understand that 30% of the voters thought Jolteon was balanced but as explained on the Discord, Jolteon really lacked consistent checks, with only one ground type in the tier and two electric immunities, one being itself. It was quite constraining on the builder and Calm Mind and Choice Specs sets could overwhelm many teams. Overall, we believe we made the right decision for the health of this metagame and we are excited to see how Carracosta will function going forward!

:lokix:Lokix:lokix: 3.3/5
1734129631795.png

Lokix has even more people that believe it to be unbalanced versus the just banned Jolteon! In terms of these statistics, the council held 2 votes. One to quickan and one to suspect Lokix and Lokix did not receive sufficient support for either action to occur. Hopefully, the upcoming tournament will give us enough to see if Lokix really is too much for the tier or not, though it is unlikely Lokix will have tiering action towards it unless something drastic happens and the playerbase turns on it so council to consider re-voting on it.

:chandelure:Chandelure:chandelure: 2/5
1734129829449.png

The vast majority of the voters believe Chandelure is balanced in the current metagame, and we will not be taking any action on Chandelure for now.

Finally, we had an open question at the end of the survey to ask the playerbase what they would like to see suspect tested.
  • 9 people wanted a Jolteon and Lokix suspect test. Jolteon was quickbanned and there was not enough support in the council to suspect Lokix.
  • 7 people didn't want a suspect at all.
  • 1 person wanted a Chandelure suspect.
  • 1 person wanted a Milotic suspect.
  • 1 person wanted to quickban Jolteon then see how Lokix is in a post Jolteon metagame.
  • 1 person was 50/50 on "no suspect" and a Jolteon quickban, citing it's too late for another suspect test.

It's always interesting to see how everyone has differing opinions on the metagame. The council will continue to tier accordingly and produce the best meta we can have possible.

This is a sample team I made to represent the very early January 2025 metagame. It's hardly been a full week since the new list of pokemon dropped, but the metagame has already changed dramatically in certain interesting and yet quite predictable ways. Chief among the aforementioned changes is the extreme decline in Goodra's viability (although as you'll come to understand--time has afforded Goodra the opportunity to turn its coat and re-enter viability by turning its back on its early meta niche). The early January 2025 metagame was defined by the prevalence of Sun teams featuring Chlorophyll pokemon enabled by Torkoal's first-ever repeat appearance in the tier.
(MamboTND is Torkoal any better this month than it was in May please say yes)
Goodra's Dragon typing and access to Sap Sipper, in concert with its sky-high special defense stat, made it nearly mandatory on early teams seeking an easy answer to Sun's fiery floral barrage. Now though, more defensive, stall-esque, and bulky offense cores have risen in both viability and popularity. The combination of Dachsbund (with Well Baked Body) and Clodsire (with Unaware) serves as a very strong check into both Sun teams, and is excellent into the meta in general. Slowbro with access to Future Sight, Regenerator, and Teleport, often functions as a partial Infernape inhibitor and allows for easier switches into whichever option walls a particular Sun threat. It's not all defense though--the discovery of viable choice scarfers which outspeed Vileplume, the permiere special Chlorophyll sweeper in the tier, has also served to tank Sun's popularity as a team archetype. Particularly without Vileplume to wall, teams have appreciated a wide array of other options in Goodra's place. The aforementioned Closdire and Slowbro can offer much more as special walls, and potentially free up a team slot for other popular pokemon such as Dachsbund, Golurk, or Reuniclus.

This is a very standard meta non-sun team in terms of pokemon composition, with a few slightly unconventional optimizations to improve its performance into some of the more niche strategies. The aim with this sample team is to provide as close to all of the option you'd need to win a given match even though those options won't often be optimal into any given match. The Sawsbuck set is designed to bait in and punish Golurk, the sole ghost type often seen on the ladder, but is also good into mons such as Clodsire and Slowbro in a pinch.Choice Scarf Infernape is this team's speed control, able to effectively deal with the chlorophyll trio in the sun and possesing an adamant nature to partially compensate for the lack of any boosting move or item. Donphan is a critical piece of this team that can sometimes be difficult to utilize effectively because of its sheer versatility. Heavy duty boots, Sturdy, and Ice Shard in combination allow Donphan at full hp to content with nearly any threat you could theoretically wish to use it for, which means preserving that health for exact right moment can be critical. Life orb Crawdaut is a roll to ohko full physically Dachsbund, after a dragon dance, and Fairy Feather Comfey is approximately a 75% chance to ohko a standard offensive Crawdaunt from full. Life Orb can be used on Comfey to gurantee that ohko, but it's up to personal preference as to which cost is more worth paying (the -10% to HP or the 1/4 chance to miss the Craw ohko)
