Playoffs Smogon Tour Season 37 Playoffs [Won By Santu]

Wanted to put together some stats about all-time quarter/semi/finals appearances in individuals, because the existing stat sheets for individual tournaments are pretty out-of-date except for the recent (excellent) Tour Playoff Appearances and Classic Hall of Fame sheets. Figured now that we're in quarterfinals here it's time for some fun trivia (and also if I jinx everyone at once then it cancels out probably).

Most interesting to me: as far as I can tell, this is the first individual tournament in Smogon history where the quarterfinal round includes at least 6 players with an individual trophy. That's 8 individuals held by the 6 of them, which is the same number held by every member of the SPLXVI Tigers and Classiest rosters combined. Whether or not that makes this a contender for one of the most stacked top-8s ever I'm not going to wade into, but it's maybe the most decorated top 8 lineup we've ever seen.

Moving onto some trivia on specific players: SoulWind, with this placement, has extended his lead for 1st all-time in quarterfinal appearances at an individual with a frankly preposterous 24 (second place being Empo's 14). It is also his 14th Smogon Tour quarterfinal, extending his lead over second-place Empo's 6. I doubt I'll make another post for semis, so I'll just say now that SoulWind is 19/23 for his career in individual quarters.

Giannis Antetokommo-o has moved into a tie for 5th all-time in individual tournament quarterfinals, with 9. With a win over SoulWind, he would enter a tie for 4th all-time in individual tournament semifinals, again tied with McMeghan and behind only Empo, ABR, and SoulWind. It's also his 5th Smogon Tour quarterfinal, tied with McMeghan for 3rd all-time, behind only Empo and SoulWind and just ahead of ABR (and some other players too). Pretty good company.

Santu has extended the existing tie for 13th all-time in career quarterfinal appearances, with his 6th, while xavgb and Luigi have entered into the existing tie at 17th, with 5 apiece. Of them, xavgb currently has 3 career semifinal appearances, Santu currently has 2, and Luigi has 1. I'll try to avoid overwhelming with too many numbers for all-time placements, but the most interesting one for me is that with a win over JustFranco, xavgb would enter a tie for 7th all-time in individual tournament semifinals, behind only the five players listed in the previous paragraph and Malekith.

Ox the Fox has entered a tie for 26th all-time in career individual quarterfinals, with 4. I don't really have any fun trivia for this one guys, sorry.

Meanwhile, this is the first individual quarterfinal for 3d and JustFranco. They are also the only two players left in this tournament looking for their first individual trophy (or for that matter, their first individual or team trophy). In fact, it was once I reached this point that I realized the trivia point about this top 8 and realized that it was a bit too interesting to bury at the end, so I moved it up.

If any of this info is easily accessible somewhere else feel free to correct anything! Good luck to all :))

Such an experienced field means there could be a lot of rematches of bo3s from past major singles tours, particularly from Soulwind and Giannis. A rundown:

Soulwind vs Giannis - Smogtour 30 and 32 semis and finals respectively (2-0).
Soulwind vs xavgb - Smogtour 35 playoffs and OLT 11 playoffs (won and lost respectively, 1-1).
Giannis vs xavgb - OST 18 semis (0-1).

For potential rematches we could see in the finals:

Soulwind vs Santu - Smogtour 35 playoffs and OLT 11 playoffs (2-0).
Giannis vs Santu - Masters II playoffs (1-0).
Soulwind vs Ox - OLT 8 finals and Masters II playoffs (0-2).
Giannis vs 3d - OLT 11 swiss (1-0).
Soulwind vs Luigi - Smogtour 27 finals (0-1).

And as a side note, Soulwind played Storm Zone in OLT 7 swiss (1-0), so he could have four straight bo3 rematches if he goes to finals.

Bo3 rematches are noteworthy, but it could also be interesting to see a Franco finals for new spice only from the semis onward. GL all!

I’m so happy I was able to qualify for my fav tour playing at midnight on my phone and using the same teams. I wish I had used better teams and played better vs luigi but that's fine.
I hope for next st we can accommodate single live tour timing for me and other Asian players which I know is a crazy ask.

Not very proud of how I played today but that’s the way shit goes sometimes.

Between this and the spl L I know I still have a lot of room to grow as a player and will keep putting in that effort to be the best.

A big philosophy of mine is that life is about the process more than the destination and being able to make peace with the ups and downs so these are the moments where it’s really tested. Maybe I didn’t win but even if I got 1% better from the last tournament that’s good enough with me and I’ll keep tryna turn these Ls into lessons and see where it takes me.

I’m writing this post so that you guys can maybe apply this philosophy too, whether it’s sports, work or games, sometimes you gotta lose to learn.

Thank you to blunder lax ima vert giannis ctc skypenguin for the help.

Like I said when I lost OLT playoffs 2022: I’ll be back, failure builds character.
