Let's Play! In-person gen 3 and gen 5 focused meetup at Long Island Retro Gaming Expo in August 2025

Hi all,
I didn't see a proper place to share information about an in-person meetup, but this year at Long Island Retro Gaming Expo me and a few friends have paired with the folks who typically manage Long Island Retro Gaming Expo to hold a few in-person events. While nothing is confirmed as of yet, we intend to have two major events and one minor event at this convention. The biggest one, which we had done last year, is a Funfest mission event for Black 2 and White 2 where we attempt to get 30 participants and 1,000 score in a Funfest mission for the medals. We actually completed this last year and our goal this year is to potentially get the world record score, but we'd still not mind helping people out with getting the 30 participant/1000 score medal only. Here's a pic of the 1000 score medal I obtained last year from my trainer card:

In addition to this, we are also looking to hold a gen 3 Orre Colosseum tournament. While we have yet to hear back as to whether or not the actual tournament plans will come into fruition, ideally we are planning on a fairly large event that will have a separate distribution/rental system for players to use who don't have proper Pokemon to use. Of course, we recommend creating a team for the Orre Colosseum meta beforehand but we do have the ability to distribute things out via a NA copy of Pokemon BOX RS + the patch that allows for Pokemon to be received regardless of dex completion. The event will also be run by the same person running the Orre Colosseum event at NAIC this year.

Lastly, I'd like to get the word out because just about anything you'd want to do would be there if last year is anything to go off of- getting StreetPass tags, PokeWalker tags to get trainers in the Trainer House in HGSS, battles, pretty much anything that requires local connections is there. I personally attempted to trade everyone I met because prior to the convention I grew tons of Starf Berries in gen 3. I also record mixed with a fair number of people so that they could go against my team even after the convention. Other volunteers bring Stadium 2 + 4 N64 controllers with Transfer Paks and even the GameBoy Printer to print off dex completion diplomas and Pokedex entries.

As for the dicey part of this post, I don't want to advertise as I imagine there has to be some sort of rule against this, however this does require a convention pass to go to. I didn't see any other "in-person meetup" style of thread and if I have to be the author of a general thread like that I absolutely can do that. As for the details, I posted the name of the con above in the subject of the thread and that should be enough to find everything. I will monitor this thread to answer questions about my experience last year as I decided that I wanted to volunteer this year as a result of the experience last year to add to it.

Hey just for help in making sure that we're keeping track of how many people are thinking about coming to this, please post here as it helps to ensure that we have a good head count going in! Also please feel free to throw in any recommendations for other things you'd like to do other than gen 3 battles and gen 5 funfest!

I went on Droomish's and Capreo's podcast to talk about multiplayer for retro Pokemon games in 2025, but I felt this was relevant to talk about here because I talk about last year's Funfest event at Long Island Retro and some plans for this year with both that and our gen 3 Orre Colosseum event:

I was waiting to be done on a certain something before joining in on the conversation...

I made a video covering the event, and what happened during the Funfest meetup. I want to share this around to generate more interest in the event! I hope I can make a difference in this way.

I will also be joining AWood in trying to use old multiplayer features. Gen 4 Underground, Gen 3 minigames, Berry Crushing, Record mixing, Pokewalker connecting...I want to do it all!

Please come to the event if it's not too much of a drive for you, even if it's just for the Saturday when we're holding out main events. It was truly an amazing experience for me, and totally worth my 11+ hour drive!

Now that my video is done...time to work on making my Orre Colosseum team...among preparing many other things in Gens 2-5.
