Social Furries & Furry Culture

so now if you are a furry reading this your challenge is to go and draw a frog furry. you need to look at frog pictures and cannot remove traits you think are ugly. you cannot give the frog paws or fur either
Apologising to the "Albatross is a normal person who does normal things" crowd because i did this bc i had nothing better to do, but also the frog furry is a centaur because just a frog furry is boring. Shoutuot to the other furheads in the discord call I was in when I drew this, you know who you are :)

Originally it was a long nosed horned frog or whatever frog has the longass eyebrows but i decided to be dull and go for the classic Posion Dart Frogge

I'd say furry as an organized fandom started in the 70s, with the publication of Vootie, which was pretty much a self publishing zine for furry content, and other zines followed suit. These would be the early fandom organizers, who would also participate in private parties for furry members. A lot of this content was branched out from the larger sci-fi fandom, and parties would be hosted in rooms of people going to these conventions: a niche inside a niche, really.

As the zines popularity grew, and proto furry conventions started to be created to account for the high number of members going to these private parties. By late 80s early 90s, anthrocon is beginning to take shape. The internet is also being used more, and newsgroups and chats are being made for furries to connect, which exploded the fandom.

But if you're asking about the furry trend as in humans fascination with anthro animals: that one is as old as culture itself, really. From art and toys to religious symbols, humans have been fascinated with animals and had tendencies to anthro them to make them closer to us. The earliest sculpture we have is of an anthropomorphic lion.

as an outsider I have to ask

1) what is exactly the appeal of fur suits? Like, what about them makes you feel like that you express yourself through them?
2) what is the appeal of conventions (beyond meeting like minded people)? I watched some vids and the shows never seem particularly enticing to me personally

I ask this without judgement, just pure curiousity

1) It's a visual expression of who we are! It's like we're showing who we truly are inside, as our human bodies can't accurately represent it. That's why we make fursuits! For some people, it helps with their social anxiety. Being in a body they truly want to be in, with others who are having the exact same experience, is heartwarming and comforting knowing so many other people feel the same way. It's a way of expressing your true self! :3
2) Conventions are mostly for meeting people, yes. They aren't for everyone, though, so don't feel guilty about it! You can also support organizations, although that's not what they're really widely known for. They go to conventions to celebrate furry culture, entertainment, and more. It's really nice!
I'd like to hear other people's opinions on this too, it'd be nice hearing what other people like about fursuits/conventions!

IMO "when did the furry community" start is a misnomer. I'm one of those weirdos who believe furries have existed forever, but especially the Western interpretation of it is, well, very Western.

Furry culture in its modern form came into the mainstream about 15-20ish years ago; anthropomorphized animals as a concept have existed for an extremely long time. Egyptian culture embraces them, for example. In fact the general intersection between human and animal is a pretty integral part of their belief system if I'm not mistaken.
