Tournament OMPL XIII - Post-OMPL Thread - WON BY THE COMMANDERS

Welcome to the REVIEW for the Power Rankings for the 13th edition of OMPL! Here we go through the Power Rankings and see how accurate they are compared to the results from the regular season. I may update results after playoffs though it becomes annoying to compare records like 6-3 vs 5-2. The original rankings can be found in this POST.

Some details:
Final rankings are based on overall record in the slot(s). First sorted by wins, then by least losses due to deadgames between Heart Takers and Zoomer Zeraoras, terrible (so a record like 2-4 is higher than 2-5), then by SB tiebreak (sum of defeated opponents' score), then by head-to-head, then (due to deadgames) by strongest opponent defeated.
Evaluating the PR is simply running a CORREL between the two rankings. The output is between -1 and 1, the closer to 1, the better the PR, the closer to -1, the better the PR is at predicting the opposite.
Other PRs made in this thread were also evaluated.
All details can be found on the sheet linked in this post.

Here are the all the Individual Tier Rankings:

Overall, congratulations to GG for being by far the most accurate PR, and congratulations to AAA for being the least accurate tier PR, yet somehow the overall PR was even worse, which was I guess expected for ranking number 1 and 2 teams at 7 and 8.

I went 2-2 in PIC and these are the teams I built.

https://pokepast.es/171f5c9e33e40bbd
This was my first team and the one I tested the most.

https://pokepast.es/f74d3be702e7a2a2
Someone else in the cord had the idea for a merciless team so with some suggestions I built this team.

https://pokepast.es/921e70a773f6c5e0
We felt inspired by another player in the tour to build an amph team, loved the team but I didn’t play my match very well.

Overall I enjoyed pic, built two out of my three built teams while high and for my last game I just used a team QT had in their builder.

Also, huge shoutouts to RL, Sealife and QT for all their support while I was learning PIC.

things didn't click this season, I don't think our draft was bad and in many alternative universes we would have qualified way easier but eh sometimes it just doesn't work
I'd like to apologize for my team bc I haven't been the best manager, not so much active and I didn't help as much as I would've wanted. I've been quite bored by OMs for quite a long time now and I thought by managing I would have enough motivation to tryhard in all metas, but it wasn't the case. I was just too bored and I never invested myself enough, and I'm sorry bc maybe with a better manager we would have gone further too. Obivously apologizing to my co flix too, he has put so much work esp in mnm all of this to have a trash useless co manager who's barely helping

I still had a blast teaming with all of you and I have no regret with the team we got, even though things didn't click in the end I was happy to discover / rediscover y'all

Siamato not the easiest to shoutout in first. You know how much I appreciate you and I really wanted to draft you, fortunately flix agreed with me and believed in you and I was quite happy to have you bc you've shadow supported my teams in so many tours and I know you're active, help a lot, and are overall a really good player. This tour was not it and if I'm being honest, I was a bit upset with how you played - I've already told it to you and I've probably been more mean than what I should've, considering the amount of work you put in the tour, so I'd like to apologize for that - but I still really liked teaming up with you. I don't expect to see you sign up for another tour after this one lol but I was really happy to share this experience, you're still the goat and one of my best friends. Long live the Camoking

Lana you're such a good player, I pretty much knew I wanted you from the start. Apparently last year was tough for you and you seemed happy to redeem yourself, you deserved it. Really nice person and amazing player, you did so well every week despite our shaky teams barely tested lol. Was very happy to team with you cuz I have a lot of respect for you since you destroyed me in ompl finals and I'm sorry I couldn't give you a better team >:(

Tbp24 best pick of the tour ngl. I knew I wanted you as a sub although flix was rly dubious, we didn't know if we were going O1V or you and well turns out we should've drafted both lol but anyway man you've really been the goat this OMPL, unfortunate record and games really didn't show your skill. You helped so much slots (esp in gg lol) and played so well in tests with really really cool ideas. I'd be really happy if you stay around (and don't get bored too quickly) until next year so you can show ur true self and go 7-0 with a better team and not having to fill holes everywhere lol

quojova BH pool was so dire, I didn't know who to get bc both flix and I suck at BH. Then you signed up unexpectedly ?? and we said yeah fuck it we gamble, and man you really are so good. You got your grasp on BH so quickly, really cool techs, good prep, you're such a nice people. I was really happy to have the chance to team with you and I know if we face each other in another teamtour I'll be TERRIFIED bc I'll know they got the best BH player..

rightclicker can't shoutout quo without mentioning the absurd amount of work you spent helping him. Even though you REALLY wanted sun to be used and we end up not using it, you've helped quo so well and he prob wouldn't have achieved such a solid performance without your help. Sorry for not letting you start more, but quo was too good >:(

Kaif ehhh sometimes it's just not your season. Sorry for putting you in this broken ass tier that is Stabmons, it wasn't fun for you and as you said every year it's worse and worse lol. You're still an amazing player and hopefully next year stabs is better and you can have an actual tournament

TectonicDestroyer I know you feel sorry for your showing and yeah it was not your best season but I was still happy to have another team tour with you, you're a good friend and I appreciate you a lot, which is why we drafted you. I hope we have another run another time (with both of us on the bench though) bc you're a really cool person

Fraise you started toughly but you clutched 2 very big wins (one being subbed in) while being busy with exams, sorry to not have let you played more but ty for not complaining about it and still helping when you had time. Was cool to talk in voc with you when we were commenting games :)

Rio Vidal I hope your IRL is going alright - we couldn't talk too much because of that and you couldn't show ur skills in this tour, which was unfort. I hope to see you in this tour next year though when you'll have more time bc I'm sure you can do great things !

zoe ik you don't feel too good about your season but you brought lvl 1 Klawf and in my eyes it makes you the goat of pic for the next 10 years. I was rly happy to team with you, you're a really nice person and I'm sorry I couldn't help you more in pic so we never rly got in touch, but I have no doubts you'll bounce back and shock everyone next OMPL

cheru you got this queen and I'm sure you'll have other chances to help in such tours, irl shit happens and I hope everything will be fine <3

Icemaster good at the game, funny, silly, probably handsome - this guy has everything we all want. you carried us so much and I'm sorry we couldn't deliver, you deserved a better team for the insane games you made (despite still not knowing anything to BH after 7 weeks.. but dw BH mains are going to flame you and you'll learn) but thanks for trying to save our season kek

QT sorry for your season you didn't deserve that (blame Atha man wtf 18k and this guy can't deliver & blaming MUs or luck he's just skill less) but appreciate a lot that you helped us even if we could've taken your POs slot - you're really kind hearted and we need more people like you here (ik Icemaster threatened you in DMs bc you clearly help him too much LOL)

Redflix I could say you suck and go with it but that's what I've told you in dms for the whole season and for several years so you prob know it. Thanks for managing with me, that was a cool experience, even though you prob would've done better with another co - sorry for ruining the 2 Zeraoras season LOL. Outside of that, ty for sticking out with me for so long, being a kind friend, trashtalking people, praising gman, and just share a friendship with me. Love you brother. Also, write eulogies pls cuz hayedenn aint doing it

Clem next year trust (I want my switch)

ty to OM community for fun tour overall and good luck to the remaining teams (and sorry to ponytas and commanders lol I was wrong ^_^)

random shoutouts to om people that made this tour better word cityscapes Ren BoingK hayedenn, and shoutouts to the hosts Vertigo goldmason and the goats UT April

hasta la vistar

I have very mixed feelings about this OMPL.
There were some fun times for sure. It was cool to reconnect with old friends, as well as getting to know lots of cool new people.
It was also very frustrating and infuriating at times though. Right now, I'm not sure if I'll ever participate in another team tournament (especially since OMWC didn't make the cut), but we shall see.

On a personal level, I wasn't particularly pleased with my performance. The games that I lost were VERY avoidable losses. The games I won didn't feel particularly earned either.
We did prep very well though. All but one of the games were favourable match-ups - and we won the one that wasn't.
I'd attribute my positive record largely to that if I'm honest. SV STABmons is heavily match-up dependent.

The state of the current STABmons metagame, and the lack of tiering action - in spite of it being universally agreed that there are major issues - is just disappointing. As someone who has played the meta since its debut in Generation 5 (and was on the council for a significant period). it's just sad to see how it has ended up.

I decided to commit fully to this tournament. I played a huge amount of games (probably 700+), spent many hours in the builder, and coming up with sets & strategies. The ladder experience was traumatic at times. It really isn't fun facing the same broken mons and sets over and over. Or outplaying someone only to have a certain victory stolen away by hax or skill-less moves with limited-to-no counterplay.

It has been quite frustrating to share my observations and have people that barely play tell me authoritatively that my opinions are bad. Apparently something isn't broken if they haven't personally seen it do broken things in the 20 or 30 or so games they have played/watched. Or that stuff is bad for similar reasons. I went out of my way to test multiple sets with almost every pokemon, since a lot of stuff that seemed like it would be good just struggled and stuff that seemed crap on paper turned out to be surprisingly effective.
It's no wonder the tier is in such a bad place when strong opinions seem to count more than vast experience.

I know it's not fair for me to comment on how much other people are playing - they could be grinding away in secret for all we know - but when the opinions of people who are playing the tier frequently are at odds with some of the decisions being made it can be very frustrating.

I was going to share a personal Viability Rankings to try and get the conversation started. since the current one is outdated and does not reflect the metagame at all. And also some other useful resources like the set compendium I built over the course of the tournament, and some more of the teams I built - but it doesn't feel worth it. I don't want to get flamed for claiming Archaludon is A- or Toxapex is B+, for example.
----------------------------------------------
Anyway, here's the teams I used. I don't think using them as is, is the best idea as they were mostly built with specific opponents in mind. But the general concepts and cores are probably fine with some tweaks:

Week 1: :mamoswine: :rotom-wash: :kingambit: :walking-wake: :pecharunt: :corviknight:
For the first two weeks we built the teams collaboratively (thanks betathunder , DeepFriedMagikarp, Clas).

We expected to face a fairly standard Ting-Lu/Toxapex/Corviknight style balance team this week.
Betathunder suggested Mamoswine would be strong into these sorts of teams. Having watched a bunch of replays, we noticed Mamoswine was hitting 4/5 pokemon on pretty much every team super-effectively. DFM suggested Scarf Walking Wake for its strong match-up into offensive teams. It also does a good job of luring in pokemon like Toxapex, which allows us to Flip Turn into Mamoswine and get off a big hit.

Nasty Plot Rotom-W also had a strong match-up into the type of team we expected to face. With Water Shuriken legal, Rotom-W was probably one of the best mons in the entire meta actually - with strong match-ups into basically everything. A lot of Rotoms at the time were hitting 250 speed to outspeed Modest Raging Bolt, so I made mine hit 251 to speed creep them. Ice Beam was my preferred move in the last slot as it hits Water Absorb Clodsire and Raging Bolt for decent damage.

Kingambit was added to form a triple priority core with Rotom and Mamoswine. We decided to go Jolly with Low Kick since opposing Kingambit was annoying for the rest of the team
SpDef Corviknight and PhysDef Pecharunt gives us a pretty sturdy defensive backbone which is able to pivot to get Mamoswine in safely.

In the pokepaste, I've changed Rotom-W to be Steam Eruption with Sitrus Berry instead of Water Shuriken + Loaded Dice. I have no idea how effective this would be now - there's probably better options.

Week 2: :tyranitar: :excadrill: :walking-wake: :amoonguss: :moltres: :zamazenta:
We were expecting to face some kind of Booster Energy spam Hyper Offense this week.

DFM suggested that Excadrill sand would be strong here. Our opponent didn't seem to use much Zapdos/Corviknight/Rotom-W (eg mons that give Excadrill trouble) so we decided to go for it.

In the game I decided to use Life Orb Excadrill because the extra power had been pretty convincing in some of the tests we ran, but in hindsight Soft Sand is probably the better option. You mostly end up spamming Headlong Rush and the recoil really starts to add up.

We decided that Walking Wake looked solid again. Opting for Specs this time, since we have Sand Rush Excadrill for speed.
I originally had Water Shuriken over Knock Off - since Stealth Rock and Sand chip already put Assault Vest pokemon like Toxapex into 2HKO range.

Eject Button Amoonguss was just an additional pivot to help to get Excadrill in safely. It also seemed useful for pokemon like Iron Valiant and Zamazenta. However, I don't find it that great in this meta generally - since it really struggles into a lot of pokemon, Steel types especially. Probably better being replaced with a Toxapex or something.

Pads Zamazenta with Thunderous Kick and BoltBeam coverage was chosen for its ability to bait in and weaken pokemon like Corviknight and Landorus-T so that Excadrill can sweep later on. It also provides some speed for when Sand is not active.

Week 3: :tyranitar: :corviknight::dondozo: :clodsire: :blissey: :pecharunt:
After losing to an avoidable blunder the previous week, this was the point I started really grinding out games to shake off some of my playing rust. I was also starting to feel more comfortable building my own stuff.
I think this was around the time that I realised that honest balanced teams often put you at a disadvantage (as they are too vulnerable to random cheese sets - trust me the ladder has plenty of them).

After two weeks of using bulky Walking Wake offense, it definitely felt like time to mix it up. And it's a good thing I did - since they loaded 3 water types (including Primarina).

I'd originally been playing around with a bulky team with multiple Salt Cure users, and at some point it kind of morphed into a full stall team.
As far as stall goes in this meta, I think this is a pretty decent build that manages to cover most of the major threats well. Obviously, stallbreakers like Thundurus-T and Hoopa-U can still be problematic. And it's possible to get overwhelmed or lose a key piece to hax.

The Corviknight can be a standard Rocky Helmet PhysDef set to act as a more stanard Knock Off absorber. I decided to use the SpDef Covert Cloak set though, since I appreciated having a mixed wall that can pivot. It also gives you a decent mid-ground for certain mons like Gholdengo and Latios - if you don't want to risk Blissey getting tricked.
Tyranitar's Knock Off as the only item removal is also not ideal - so Corrosive Gas can be considered on Pecharunt or Clodsire.

Week 4: :slither-wing: :latios: :thundurus-therian: :toxapex: :rhyperior: :corviknight:
Slither Wing caught my attention as a pokemon with unexplored potential in the metagame. Since we were facing Time2Bonk's team (and they had just changed their Smogon username from Slither Wing), it seemed like the ideal time to use it.

A Protective Pads pivot set with Thunderous Kick seemed really good. Thunderous Kick into Earthquake/Wild Charge managed to KO many of the common switch-ins. Originally I wanted to use Will-O-Wisp to annoy walls like Corviknight and Landorus-T, but First Impression ended up being a better fit.

I figured a bulky Volt Turn style team would allow me to make the most out of Slither Wing's strengths. Part way through building the team, I realised it looked a lot like a team that I'd seen VolcanionIsGood using - Except with Slither Wing in the place of his Infernape - so I decided to commit to that fully.

Week 5: :regieleki: :annihilape: :volcarona: :urshifu-rapid-strike: :archaludon: :espathra:
This was the week that Combat Torque and Water Shuriken got banned. I decided to go with full on HO to take advantage of the bans - and it looks like I wasn't the only one to have that idea.

Looking at some early SV OU teams, the idea of Annihilape and Volcarona behind screens seemed like it could be very powerful.

This team went through a bunch of iterations. Originally it was Deoxys-S setting the Screens. I tried lots of different set-up pokemon too.
Eg, Stored Power Latias, Blaziken (special and physical), SD Samurott-H, CM Sylveon, SD Kingambit.
At some point I realised that half my team was freed uber pokemon, and then remembered that Regieleki could set Screens. The idea of using only Ubers (with little regard for synergy or defensive typing) on the week stuff had finally got banned just seemed kind of funny to me, so I ran with it.

Despite not much thought going into the team, it has been surprisingly effective. If one guy can't set up and sweep, another usually can.

Archaludon can be replaced with Kingambit if priority is required.
And Espathra can run Colbur Berry + Roost instead of Leftovers + Protect.
Max Speed Regieleki outspeeds Booster Speed Iron Valiant and can Nuzzle it.

Week 6: :indeedee: :armarouge: :iron-moth: :polteageist: :sneasler: :ambipom:
I had toyed around with the idea of Psychic Terrain offense earlier in the tour, but decided against it due to its inconsistency.
However, after facing it randomly on the ladder, I decided it could be worse re-exploring.

These kinds of teams typically rely on Magic Bounce Hatterene to deflect hazards and keep the multiple Focus Sashes intact. However, after a lot of testing, I found Hatterene to be pretty useless at preventing hazards in this metagame. Stone Axe is reasonably common for starters. And Also Hatterene's bulk struggles to keep up with the increased power level. It's a shame really, since that pokemon has a lot of interesting qualities.

Instead I decided that I would try and fit other removal options onto my non-sashed pokemon.
I originally had Court Change Indeedee, but decided I'd rather play with no hazards at all.
Mortal Spin Iron Moth is a pokemon I'd used on other HO teams. Being able to threaten steel types who might try and block the spin is very useful. Psychic Terrain also helps cover its main weakness in STABmons (priority).

I had noticed that my opponents didn't tend to use many Rocky Helmets so I decided to take advantage and use Population Bomb Ambipom. A very strong and powerful pokemon, but weak to priority and Rocky Helmets (which were not an issue here).
Being able to Tidy Up also helps with the hazards/Focus Sash preservation issue.

Psychic Terrain Sash Spam is always going to be a fishy team to bring. I'd made a list of the main 5 pokemon that I definitely did not want to see when using this team - and they brought 3 of them.... (Rillaboom, Heatran, Stone Axe Ogerpon-C)

Week 7: :grimmsnarl: :skeledirge: :slowbro-galar: :iron-hands: :kingambit: :enamorus-therian:
The game this week ended up not happening. But since it already didn't matter towards the playoffs, we were planning on bringing a fun team.

Basically a STABmons version of the infamous Mono Claw team.
It actually performed surprisingly well in tests - and went about 17-3 on the ladder.
I'd considered one of the previous weeks actually, but then I chickened out due to the major ground weakness.
Seriously, Landorus-T, Mamoswine, Excadrill can basically all 6-0 if the claw does not activate - and there's no Tera here to get out of it.

Semi-Finals: :pelipper: :basculegion: :araquanid: :archaludon: :iron-treads: :ogerpon-cornerstone:
Since the unbanning of Manaphy and Araquanid, rain gained two very powerful tools. It's no coincidence that it is suddenly being spammed everywhere on the ladder after being rarely seen at all for a very long time.

There were a few different versions of this team.
It's mainly the Basculegion slot that changes (either for Basculegion-F, Barraskewda, Thundurus, Thundurus-T).
I got scared of facing a Meloetta and decided to bring this version - despite it being pretty much worse than the others.

The game itself ended up being very weird.
Ended up facing a team very weak to Araquanid (and kind of soft into Archaludon and Pelipper too).
-------

I ended up making a lot more teams over the course of the tournament - might post some of the more useable ones later, but I'm not sure.
I found it interesting that I didn't use pokemon like Landorus-T, Heatran, and Slowking a single time - despite them being on a lot of my teams in previous generations. But as I said before, loading cheesier stuff seems to be the optimal way to play such a volatile metagame with so many broken elements flying around.

Yo its SpaceSpeakers and my OMPL team got eliminated in Semis again. No one asked but I'm here to share some mnm teams that we built in OMPL and OMFL (record does not mean anything stfu).
Dialgas (I'm a sorry to managers because this slot went negative due to hax, huge shoutout to placus for being my mnm partner as always)

Good run in OMPL/OMFL overall. I enjoyed building MnM and talking shit with my friends a lot. Coulda been better if managers had been good but nop, they suck.
I'm not gonna write shoutout for each person cuz i'm busy asf so i will just ping those who i often talk to.

DragonPhoenix333 the goat, no one knows what you did for the team but it would have not be the same in gg bo3 without you always crazy ideas who works, just the goat.
crow crumbs thank you for everything aaa tests, pic wins we didn’t talk much but you were always so incredible when we ran tests and discussion

I didn’t have time to talk with everyone this ompl so this are smaller shoutouts
Clem I hope you will find a tier you love one day in oms, great ompl an other kyurem, from 0 to the top
Axzel you were really busy but you are incredible I learned a lot with you.
Btw Pic squad you are all the goat dfm chromate and others thank you for helps, thank you for all helpers in general.
Big thanks to potatochan who was there since week 1,
Nice season for everyone
The one who helped me without being helpers in my team
Osake Siamato Dragonillis

Heart Takers just fell short at the finish line but there is a lot to be proud of. Guess we’ll need to wait for our win until next year. Congratulations Commanders, you really blew all of our expectations out of the water.

SammyCe123 thank you so much for managing this tournament with me, we got so close to what we set out to do. From start to finish we did everything we could to get that win and I think we gave it the best shot we could have. Pre draft strategy paid off big time and we ended up with a broken draft ranked #1 by everyone. We had a great run and will try again next year.

ghostlike your record may not have been what you wished it was but you were incredibly important to our team. The first slot of aaa was extremely stacked this year and you kept trying your very best every week not just for your own slot but also for our second aaa slot. You are one of the main reasons that Stareal was able to perform so incredibly well.

Stareal thank you for the insane plays that won us so many games. It was great to know that we always had a super confident pilot to get us that clutch win we needed.

avarice we were so lucky to have you on our team. Getting such a confident player for only 3k was one of the steals of the season. Hope to see you again for more om related tournaments.

hayedenn our mnm goat, you always cooked some cracked shit and got us many important wins. Sammy was so right to go over budget to get you as our first pick of the tour.

entrocefalo this was a tough year for gg and you did a great job. You were always there when we needed you and got us some really important wins. Hope to see you again next ompl.

Frixel our pic goat and dog lover. We were really happy to have you on our team and you did great. Thank you for putting in the effort to create something new and interesting every week. I still barely understand whats happening on my screen but always knew that we could trust you to get the wins.

Sylvi people will look at your record and think you underperformed but they did not see how much effort you put into our stab builds every week. Without you this run would not have been possible.

Treeko928 you were extremely important to our success in this tournament. You helped out in many different metas and played bh vs some of the strongest players. Hope to see you keep improving and become one of the best om players.

ojr the original Heart Taker, we might not have been able to run it back as managers this year but we were really glad to pick you up and you almost managed to play a game lol.

Fragments the scheduling goat (except for your own game lol). Without your efforts we wouldnt know when all the games were happening. You were our super sub that wasnt ever needed. Just like ojr you almost managed to play a game.

Rabia unfortunately we didnt manage to get you a game. I would have loved to see you play

Also a huge shout out to everyone who helped us out this tournament. It’s always nice to see how much willingness there is to collaborate in this community.

That’s all for now, I hope we at least managed to win your hearts (no we are not giving it back)

Oh boy where do i begin, not the best with words anyways

Smudge I asked you on a whim to manage with me and you really helped me figure out the ropes. You were literally the anchor for my insanity and I'm really glad you agreed to this lmao

cityscapes The BH champion, you were basically our 3rd manager in drafting as well and really helped us get a LOT of solid picks. Congrats on getting the near perfect run.

maybca You were the 3rd manager in spirit, you put a LOT of unbridled enthusiasm and honestly the team energy wouldn't have been the same without you.

Fc Lost one game and won the rest. When the going got tough you really got going. Important to mention that you pretty much built all three teams for the tiebreaker and therefore this season couldn't have been made without you.

RoFnA Idk how you did it but you managed to get on a tear in mix and mega, managed to play really well too even when you were slotted in AAA.

crow crumbs While you didn't do so well in AAA you managed to do phenominal in PiC and your wins cemented the fact I made the right decision buying you.

Iride You wanted to try out to play AAA and I think a lot of people undersold your talent in the tier. Your wins were incredibly crucial and definitely the spark that gave us our second wind

Clem despite the awkwardness of both the STAB slot and tier, you still managed to wrangle a lot of crucial wins, despite final tiebreakers going how they went. Enjoy your freedom from the tier. We love scovillain sun.

Axzel I'm sorry that you weren't able to shine much given you werent familiar with the current MnM tier but I appreciate you playing despite being busy with WCOP, on the bright side you did win one at least!

Taka The flex slot. Thanks so much for being on call in case things went wrong and spitballing ideas. Managed to pilot a city team to success in less than 24h of training and also being able to cover STAB was really helpful, especially with the support you gave when spitballing ideas. Shoutouts Gigaton Hammer Mega Audino

damflame 3 you managed to destroy literally 90% of my teams during testing. I think if I didn't draft you you would have been a worthy adversary in the PiC slot and definitely would have crushed me. Your enthusiasm in helping everyone test despite also dealing with the best of 3 slot was really something else.

DragonPhoenix333 You weren't able to play but dang did you build a lot of insane teams. You building and Damflame piloting gave you a lot of crazy wins in GG. You also somehow managed to build broken webs 5 or 6 times over lmfao

BIG shoutouts to these people who helped us despite not being on the team: SpaceSpeakers Ineros Chromate pannu DeepFriedMagikarp Potatochan Akira GhastlyPixie tkhanh (and probably more people i forgot)

pre-ompl builder: https://pokepast.es/7a22dacefbc98095
import all ompl teams: https://pokepast.es/279304cba4f71264

i will start at the start. why did i sign up? my stated reason to akira was that i wanted to more vividly feel the passage of time. im not sure what that means and i dont really think it helped much with that. really i just wanted to bring offense because i didn't think anyone else would do that. writing the big offense post in the bh thread made me realize how wide and unexplored the offense world really was, and that motivated me a lot.

i had a feeling that the managers who'd been around oms/bh for ages would likely pass me up in search of better, cheaper buys which is an understandable decision in light of my last couple team tours. unfortunately for these people, i am in fact still capable of winning games, and with the help of some luck things ended up going quite well for me. being honest i was not impressed with the commanders at first glance either; i still have no idea how we willed our aaa slots into working out, and bird in pic was also something i didn't expect at all.

besides the offense post, the #1 thing that kept me motivated was writing the game review posts. they're a ton of effort obviously but i was able to draw so much from critically analyzing the teams and plays of others. to anyone struggling in a team tour i would highly recommend this method.

NOTE: the incredible operating system windows decided to fill up 20gb of disk space because it was bored and thus delete all my teams the week of semis. fortunately i had all the old teams backed up, but some of the following teams are reconstructed and may not be entirely accurate.

game here. i asked for a bo3 vs ballfire which he fortunately accepted. i really like doing bo3s at the start of team tours just to prime myself for the environment, w1 is probably the lowest-stress situation and ballfire doesnt play too crazy so i figured it'd be chill. this was the only team i built for the bo3, wanted to use trickscarf because i had a lot of memories of using it in gen8 and getting an early advantage every single game. the rest of the team is meant to assure maximum neutrality so i could just hop in and outplay.

brought here. old team, this is my early version of "get the hell out of ariake!!" which akira later localized modified and put in samples. i liked my version better cause no recovery ghostceus is awesome, and it worked quite well in the game. usually you can beat this type of ballfire team pretty reliably by sapblocking it so i had 2 sapblockers and won

i wanted to build around eleceus because when i looked into it, the ability to counter nearly all th arc while usually beating imp was amazing. the mon was in fact phenomenal but this team i made felt extremely passive and slow, so i did something pretty funny and cut the team in half, bringing th ogre + eleceus + imp w6 and steela + clod + john pork w3.

i couldn't play w2 due to illness, so i asked taka what he wanted to use and he said offense. i stayed up til like 7 am building this team cause my sleep schedule was fucked, it was a kinda horrible experience but also a ton of fun to put together. the cb chicken + growth speed boost idea had been on my mind for a while and as soon as i arrived at the chomp + flutter idea i knew i had something really strong. wasn't sure what to put as the last to beat take heart but then i remembered the whole eleceus idea and everything kind of came full circle. eleceus on such an offensive team feels really weird at first but the more you think about it the more sense it makes.

this was taka's game, i woke up after it had started and witnessed the truly mysterious events unfold. the win was nice but unfortunately it came at the cost of familiarizing taka with balanced hackmons, which had disastrous consequences down the line. stay tuned for what happens next.

brought here vs quojova. i really wanted to bring a cool-ass th primal kyogre named "sea of tranquility" and then win with it but i didn't have any ideas until i realized quojova typically doesn't bring chicken or super strong physical breakers, so i could forgo fc altogether and replace it with the truly devious sticky hold instead. of course in the game i run into ICE SCALES LEECH SEED ogre and completely fucking crazy things happen. i was a little worried that me saying "yeah good fucking game" after getting the freeze could have been seen as bm quojova apologies if you read that as disrespectful i intended it as just good-hearted trolling between friends but we haven't talked in a while idk if im overthinking this

ANYWAY, the audino was originally my standard set th/spin/moonblast/recover, i became super paranoid about flare boost flutter cause yknow it kind of just boosts up and kills all my guys, then FUCKING Taka pulls up and suggests gigaton hammer. now this was an incredibly dangerous suggestion because i couldn't actually think of a reason why it was bad, so gigaton audino stayed in the final version. one of the funniest techs ive ever used, massive respect to taka for coming up with it. pit trap your friends

brought vs akira here. i wasn't eager to face her as she'd been my main testing partner for the tournament, but i knew her mental was in a pretty terrible spot so i figured i could bring something that departed from my usual style and it'd probably work okay (that did indeed happen). i'd been trying to use a new arc every week (this actually went pretty well, ghost ghost psychic -> elec -> none -> water -> steel -> elec again -> fire -> fairy -> dark was the procession). the zacc + fireceus idea was inspired by teams fififlutters, quojova, and of course akira herself had used in the past. i love the double spin chansey here it's so funny.

semifinals
i built a lot of teams here, whenever rematches are on the table i feel super urged to branch out and make some really eccentric stuff. however, i was paired against will instead of ballfire this time so i settled on something safer.

triage aud + mortal recover groundceus + celesteela is from last year, i wanted to test out scarf chicken and also try to make scales groundceus work cause you exploit the rising eleceus. incredibly fucked up team, i used it a bunch on ladder and got into some truly disgusting positions. groundceus might actually be good if you can get comfortable at navigating those

disgusting offense used by bad people. i was highly considering reusing the esper wing th guy this time cause it wasn't actually revealed in my game vs sevag. the original version of this team had lunala over ghostceus, leading to the invention of the horrific Spooky Frog:

city — 7/12/2025 12:59 AM
so last time will brought offense there was a scarf kyuw
it’s a mon that makes a lot of sense, in general trick offense is relatively common though i don’t personally like it
trick is thus one of the most likely stable lunala answers we will see
so against offense pert is a loser right, no fc no scales just clicking glare and ground move and maybe sap if i let him
if i give the trick user a spooky plate when they try to trick lunala
they are no longer a lunala answer
this also applies to stuff like trick sludge etern on balance
in both cases they have to spend another turn tricking their item back
and i am given the freedom to click a progress-making move of my choice

unfortunately i did not bring spooky plate mega swampert to an actual match cause i realized the arc slot was free so i could just run ghostceus instead. very sad

damflame brought this for finals here. headlong on scarf chicken was his idea (though tc was mine) and i thought it did a good job at revitalizing the concept and making it more imposter-resistant. kasib flutter is so awesome, you just ain't afraid of no ghost, dialga dies to garde but we were not scared of garde. fleur was because i opened my third eye and saw the korai coming from 3 years away but unfortunately blaziken didn't open any of its eyes and we missed twice in a row and had to tiebreak. fuck you blaziken why don't you try building the teams if landing the moves is so hard

brought vs ivar here. basically, complete insanity that drew from many previous offense builds including this one which i gave to damflame but he didn't use in ompl. the spdef on heatran and shocks can be tweaked depending on how you feel about imposter.

i felt horrible for a long time after throwing this game by not earth powering the registeel (circle throw wasnt on my radar at all) and not eject buttoning into zacian to explode and follow up with heatran (lines where registeel switched felt too difficult to calculate), but on the plus side i 1) beat qt in the ensuing grudge match after they called my team bad 2) scared hearts so badly with this team that they banned bh against us in tiebreak despite ivar literally being 6-0 in there and winning against me 3) won ompl lets go baybeee custom avatars comin our way commanders on top

speaking of commanders

HiZo Smudge good managers, maintained good communication with me and even tested with me which was awesome. i usually like having a dedicated bh sub but having you guys in the channel listening to what i said was a huge help in its own right. playing knowing your team really has your back is always so motivating

maybca thanks for the scouts every week, it was genuinely super helpful, your energy helped us all keep going week after week i think

Taka thanks very much for subbing in on such short notice, teaming with you on virizzions last year was awesome and it was fun as hell on commanders this time as well. youre a fucking menace dude you gotta sign up for hpl and become a Sigma Star Kyogre

Fc was so awesome to watch you be like "Yeah i probably bring x and y and that wins" and then win. infectious confidence

Axzel another two-time teammate (shoutout larping lopunnys), we didnt talk much this time but youre chill as hell i like teaming with you

crow crumbs
1753658345830.png
as i said before i had no idea you could pic, that was fire

Iride lowkey you might be her. your games were so awesome to watch, you'd always see these ideas that i wouldn't despite having equal info.

damflame 3 you got a very solid mental (super important in a slot like bo3) and you're a lot of fun to build with cause you're good at thinking critically about each and every choice.

DragonPhoenix333 you did a pretty crazy amount of support across the team, i remember looking at the other tier channels and being like oh yeah dp333 has like a thousand messages here we never lose ever, i wish i couldve seen you play

Clem 10,000 more games of stabmons

RoFnA you fuckin held our mnm together, terrifying tier but you handled it

Akira thanks for like singlehandedly keeping me involved in oms lol this game fucking sucks why do i keep meeting cool people in it

GhastlyPixie Fish Gaming pannu Other Server vc gang.... solve my puzzle... use my teams....

enough Commanding... for now
