The 1st seed curse continues...

ggs Cosmogs, you guys looked like the strongest team going into the midseason. despite some struggles in the second half, we needed some insane heroics to tie you in the regular season (I guess Baddy still has it). I have a lot of respect for the team DC and cooper drafted--I did not know they would look this strong after the first couple of weeks in some slots. They almost didn't make playoffs in lieu of the Totos, and wouldn't have made it without TIP's insane heroics vs Nails. Then we go down 1-3 or something and pull it back to a 5-4 lead, and get to experience another BW game leading to a dead heat in 5-5. despite the heated comments following the timeout debacle (which we talked it out and he did apologize for), I could sense that it was going to be a close series with some insane prep going one way or another (most games came down to the line too). in a lot of ways despite the public comments cooper was the heart of this team, and I have been in a lot of these tours; I don't know if this team could have gone as far as it did without its managers.

I'm proud of my tiebreak game vs Eniigma--I was really thinking of picking another tier where we could maybe play vs madman Heysup, but I'd like to shoutout Coconut dcae and in part LilyAC for convincing me to slot in for this. I basically knew I was going to be the SV2 madhouse vs Eniigma (perhaps only Heysup is scarier to play) even though he brought one of the more normal teams I've seen from him this season (gl in SCL goat). Some of you know I am posting a personal history, and a few interesting things came up in the inevitable namesearch:

And now, for something completely different:

I joined this site in 2013. I believe the way it happened is I registered on Pokemon Showdown post watching guys like Lueroi, I mostly watched the walkthrough but then I saw the Wi-Fi battles and I was absolutely enthralled. This battle where Lucario makes like a last minute sweep at low hp... absolutely enthralling. Anyone heard of the Marriland forums? Back then, 2011-2012ish I would feel so desperate to find a way to play online, because none of my game cartridges would save and I was unable to play online against other people (to say nothing of the fact that grinding mons to level 100 and making an actual competitive team is a lot of busywork). I didn't know the terminology "simulator" and ended up on random RPGs but nothing close to what PO was at that time or what PS would become. THEN, closer to early 2013, I find TheKillerNacho and all of his Wi-Fi battles from the newer BW generation because Lueroi had mostly DPP, and I see more depth because he actually narrated all his Wi-Fi battles. The last youtuber I really remember from this generation is https://www.youtube.com/@CoolStoryBrobat:]CoolStoryBrobat[/URL]. Great guy, I managed to get a battle with him in BW UU and I won and he uploaded it which I thought was the coolest thing ever. He even saved m I was in a monotype league where I would beat the other guys with mono dragon but I used to play chess as a kid and I could kind of feel that yes, it's good to win, but a lot of the players are unable to match the quick thinking and lines that I'd kind of intuited from my gameplay in the real pokemon games and what I had learned so far. This is most of what I remember bar being in PS! Lobby chat. I was a frequent talker there and I don't remember that many names besides what I've been able to digging through old posts. I joined Smogon in June 2013. I quickly racked up posts the same way I did on the old PS! forums (RIP), and it turned out the forum had just migrated from vBulletin to Xenforo, messing up all the permissions. Why does this matter? Well, it turns out you're not allowed to post in the RMT archive. I did, and then I'd come back to the forum and see my post was somehow gone?? So I'd make a post again (you couldn't see that someone deleted your post back then). Eventually, either tab or kokoloko I think it was tab first PMed me telling me to cut it out. The PM was locked, I created a new PM asking what I did wrong (in my own inimitable communication style) and received no response. Koko PMed me the second time about posting in the "locked" forums but honestly, I don't know if I actually posted in those archives after that second PM. Maybe someone finds the exact sequence of events, I can't even find the PMs detailing my infractions, but my best guess is that previous offenses that hadn't been infracted before kind of accumulated and I ended up with a ban. I'm pretty sure I appealed my ban to Joim on PS in 2013, meeting mostly rejection, and I had to wait a long month or so till August 2013 to begin posting again. Here is a highlight from that time and one of the only posts that wasn't deleted: https://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/dogbirds-peak-1.3485670/. While you can see the cutting-edge analysis and quick invective that would make me a successful LC player, the lack of communication skills/scattershot thinking is evident. In the meantime, I believe I had started laddering in LC. This is where I met Kaboom and Blanche, two users that were definitely way better than me at BW LC. I remember when I would crit kaboom on ladder and he'd get mad lmao, and i was like oh man I'm sorry :psysad:. It's just kind of funny meeting these guys all the way back because something about being higher on the BW LC ladder than the others just bound me to LC for the near future and it's part of why I stuck with the community; the two guys I knew from LC just from PS, Kaboom, and dcae, went on to have careers overlapping mine.

Now that I was unbanned, I was back in BW LC. I found the Superpowerdude RMT and I had opinions on everything. Sand is broken! I'm not sure why we are using offensive mons, not having multiple switchins to a threat coupled with recovery is bad! Then there were actually some pretty cool opinions (Drilbur sand was broken, but that's so obvious it's kind of blase to mention it in every post you have). During my time interacting with others on the forum post-unban, I developed friendships with members of the Dogbirds group; I talked with Vileman researching on this piece and I was basically half in tears reminiscing some of these names. The main one is Superpowerdude--basically a god to me in terms of play, the aforementioned Kaboom, Hulavuta, Don Honchkrorleone, Rowan, and to a lesser extent Chieliee. I went back in the BW forum and saw Cxinlee's avatar and had like one of those Let it Happen-echoes. There's others, Charmander/(makeup) that I remember more from the Skype group era. Lasagne is another poster who wasn't an LC main by any means (NU), and I remember him from the Skype era too! I can swear I remember tazz from this moment, he was a 2013 user and you will see him mentioned frequently in 2015. There is no record of this, as he didn't really post in the BW LC forum.

ShinyAzelf is one of my more random friends from this era, I remember him from the BVB Dortmund alt. Fantastic guy, on Team Asia at some point, my first VM on this website. Vileman is probably one of my closest friends on this site. We didn't become as close till about 2015, but he's clearly in my memory from this era. Unfortunately, our hero did not conquer Lost Cave 2, this honor went to Wobbyble. My relationship with TCR evolved over time but during this period it was very friendly; I have great memories of this era.

It's not like I didn't interact with some people outside of this circle; I remember blarajan being LCTL and he obviously figures a lot into the story later on. I'm pretty sure that's one of the only mods I was on okay terms with and he put in some effort to helping me feel my place in the community.

Here are some highlights from that era: (yes, the first screenshot has at that time Smogon Tour playoff phenom and BW talent Leftiez)

yeah, what if bro
this clearly deserves a separate section. on smogon user and conservatively 85-year-old august 's timeline. Later on I would find out he had me blocked on this site. These two were probably more pleasant memories of my interactions from this time, as I will get into later on.
1754165933224.png

1754161876569.png

seriously, I'm pretty sure august played a season of XY LC or something. he was definitely a BW RU fiend

this is my last post that I can see in the BW LC forum for 2013. This isn't close to the end of my time on smogon in 2013. I believe the end of the year is when I was removed from being able to like posts. This is a holdover from my early Facebook days where I wasn't on social media at all, roped myself into it, and then didn't really realize the social mores and started liking like literally every post LOL. I will complete my retrospective on the C&C/social forums experience in 2013 when time permits.

A separate formative story from 2013 (some of the august VMs are from this era): Grand Slam II. I remember being fucking LIVID about my ban. I wanted to play this tournament! I loved playing LC, and I missed out on signing up on multiple tiers due to my own folly. Not that I knew this at the time, but I was paired up vs Nelson-X or Nelson at the time in LC Open R1. There are a grand total of 6 VMs from my profile on his to schedule this, and each of them is a gem where if it's a mutual like Vileman or someone else you know you are getting a comment on it in like 2018 like "gg man" or "hey i'm on now". I think what ended up happening is I annoyed the shit out of him to the extent that dude just gave me an activity win. Despite all the activity fishing stuff that happens now, the fact that everything is more systematized does feel good and probably would've saved me some heartburn.

1754172013642.png

i knew about ghosting back in 2013?

1754171966267.png

nelson!!!

So, just to round out some shoutouts from the BW LC era: apt-get TUO Yagura Kavatika CatcherAndTheRai The Quasar. I didn't get to explore these threads as much, TUO and yagura (to a great extent catcher) were friends for a formative period of time and I remember catcher and TUO going into the 2015/16 era. There's so many good memories from here that are lost--I might attempt to collect more if I get the chance.

and a PS shoutout for good measure Sturdynips. He's in the lore all the way into 2015/16 but a PS guy through and through, barely figures into the forums, but an absolute legend. I really wish he'd stayed on here.

Gary is not really an LCer whatsoever--LC is the majority of activity of mine from this period and he was a UUer--but I appreciate his kind words a lot. I met a lot more users like this later on but there were few users that were both on good terms with me and respected in the community. Building that bridge was really hard--some of it is genuine cluelessness as some of these posts will show and some of it is simply expressing thoughts in a pretty immature way. The "Golurk more" meme was very applicable.

There was a long road to October 2013, where I finally get my pre-contributor badge. I was a member of the Grammar and Prose team and I would try to amcheck basically everything. This led me to fights with my friends who were coming up, like Icecream/funbro, solicited and unsolicited words of encouragement from other GP members and contributors (which I appreciated more than they know and still kind of warms my heart when I went back and read some of them), and so much more. I am not sure at what point I was in the Minus skype group, where I met good friends and had more than a few people treat me positively in public as a friend rather than a mentee, but this is where I crossed paths with multiple people who would be in that group in 2015.

I've always been a bit of a grammar nerd. I don't think I write super well--I overuse a bunch of phrases and only write in batches where I will repeat the same phrase over and over. It's pretty painful going back and editing these, as my organization is... lacking. Relying on being on a state of flow is a dubious method, but works for me in some things, and at least as far as sentence structure things go I've always been very good with noticing grammar mechanics. A lot of my old amchecks have some... quite insane pulls actually. This one for example, from the link earlier, is from Nov 2013:

1754178287363.png

This is already pretty late in my career, and I've been on this site for a grand total of four to five months; my insane activity was paired with a drive where I would basically post as much as possible. I'd probably post thrice a day, and this is with me actively limiting myself from commenting on everything I see trying to not get banned. For those of you that are here for the cringe, I actually realized that I wasn't close to covering all the people I've met on this site. I met random GPers such as piikachuu at the time, and we actually become GP at a similar time from our amcheck days. Some of you may know the legend of bugmaniacbob; we have interacted. I'd need to look more to find all of them.

Some highlights in the meantime:

1. correcting col49 on ninjask viability, seriously embarrassing stuff here col
2. This one really doesn't count, probably my only interaction with SilentVerse ever, but still like third or fourth QC comment on fucking BW RU Rampardos. The community was really cooking here; there's at least 4 people in that thread excluding me that have been in SPL.
3. Blast's response to my VM request for a QC check. I definitely mention him down the line but he was really good man. Not that I'd know at the time.
4. there's a soulgazer one here but it's 5 am rn

1754177789610.png

great success. melvni's avatar is one of the more iconic ones to me, I will always associate it with him
Some people have been incredibly lucky to get a sneak peek of the post so far. Here are the reviews:

This is probably a smaller snippet of the entire thing, and as I mentioned I haven't really a separate ladybug/contributor arc in 2013, but it'll have to do for now. Interesting to see if Coco manages to make the repeat happen from LCBC, this tour is incredibly hard to win for some reason.[/hide]

2014 - dead time

Let's fast forward through 2014; my memory is of being 100% dead on this site. Studying commitments were too much, I was spending way too much time on this site, it was too much. I don't remember if there's a lot of correspondence regarding my quit here because I came back and: apparently I needed to quit in 2015 again? I'm not sure of the exact events here but probably exam season.

Looking through old PMs, there's not much activity past like March 2014 which tracks. I was added to this absolutely baffling PM which was... something to read through. Not going to invade privacy here, but here's a sneak peek:

1754173075089.png

Here's a story of how I won my first tournament on individual tournament on Smogon. No, it's not LC Open IV.

2015 is going to be a long year. There, you were warned.

So 2015 starts, and in someways this is a new era. This is my first real experience playing XY LC, having been dead for most of 2014, and I'm coming back to this forum in full force. I think it's important to spend a lot of time here because I made my first SPL at the start of 2016 and was in Grand Slam finals in March 2016 thanks to the bracket redo (which is, like, whether or not you think I should have that trophy it is without doubt that I should be in that finals. Mazar LITERALLY had everyone's teams down to the sets). This is an astronomical rise. I didn't even follow starmaster's rise until like late 2015; he wasn't in a deep run that open and his rise was kind of separate through the LCPL path (which is very ironic if you consider how our LCPLs together pan out).

Fuck Murkrow BW2

The first major point I see is my winning the Fuck Murkrow BW2 LC tournament. There is an absolutely legendary exchange between tcr (who is another user from 2013 I remember fondly for that era) and queenlucy, who most people on this forum will remember as mad0ka. I beat lucy in the tournament, apparently with luck, as I was used to mentioning in my winposts. Strange but I did it; maybe I felt like it was validated by the circumstances and it was shitty not to do, but definitely a theme that others have picked up on.

Look at the signup list for this tour. Really, really look at it ("me" is Rowan btw). You'll see Tricking, two-time SPL manager, OLT winner, probably has played tiebreaks and made a bunch of STours. You'll see GOAO, late phenom turned cheater turned whistleblower. NUTL Raseri (involved in lc atp), this guy named tazz?, shrug, mad0ka, fatty, heysup, OP, SPL mainstay ZoroarkForever, thecrystalonix/tko, not-crust-yet blarajan and the billion community mainstays in coco TUO vileman etc. In some ways this was an incubator for what the next gen of SPL/snake starters in LC would be. I won this tournament.
1754173129525.png
6 months till being a spl mainstay

1754173153339.png

My run as as such:Round 1: My round 1 opponent was Cheir. I skillfully claimed activity and instead of honoring it Rowan actually hosted and subbed in majaspic22. This is a French player that is considerably good at LC. This will be a returning character.

1754173172416.png

shot/chaser

Round 2: Omastar42. To the best of what I can tell, this was a user later named Oma that was a LC UU main and played multiple LCPLs in it. This is the start of my infamous "sorry I haxed you" posting https://www.smogon.com/forums/threa...ment-won-by-kingler12345.3539720/post-6267501 (edited)

Round 3: Tricking. I have no memory of this. I don't think this really needs to be discussed, he is probably even more successful than starmaster if you consider the players that started in LC and left. No mention of hax, I guess I messed him up? https://www.smogon.com/forums/threa...n-by-kingler12345.3539720/page-6#post-6289598Round 4: Pancham. I pointed out in the thread that this user seemed rather inactive and it was sketchy he was getting activities over people. I managed to destroy him with this activity post: https://www.smogon.com/forums/threa...n-by-kingler12345.3539720/page-6#post-6289598.Round 5: Grand finals round robin between me, mad0ka and Raseri. This was a legendary entertainer from the start.

1754173240313.png

Thank you current lcpl starter and our lcbc player HanPyol, legit have no idea you were on this site in 2015). edit: after doing a lot of digging it turns out this was user Kumiho whom I vaguely remember

After everything was said and done, I did it. I won my first LC tournament. Here's the moment:

1754173279822.png

So, mad0ka's post doesn't seem quite conciliatory towards my win. Perhaps it takes more to convince the queen of hax, you know it when you see it. mad0ka wasn't done after this, though: you'll have to check the log to see what went down or led to this. Here is the aftermath though:

1754173299999.png

An absolutely insane exchange where each user pre-empts each other, the loser fights a completely different user that was not part of it, and the third member of the round robin final who didn't even play mad0ka likefarms off of it. Oh never mind, I guess the mad0ka Ras final counts as done:

Melon's like absolutely looks like a stealth like here. Apparently it isn't. Good for you.

But what of mad0ka and Raseri's match?
1754173326288.png

But that's it. The tournament was done. I had won what, when all's said and done, was an incredibly stacked tour for its time. I got lucky against two players (again, a guess, I am not rewatching BW LC where Murkrow for some reason hadn't been banned yet??? the gen had BEEN over LOL) but when all's said and done it's a drop in the bucket (as tcr elucidated mad0ka probably was the one who haxed me anyway). I had displayed the skill needed to beat some people in a few games of pokemon, winning 5 bo1s and absolutely outmaneuvering Pancham with an activity win.
This was so unbelievably insane that I had to post in the thread to find out what just happened. I was simply stunned.

1754173370446.png

Sign of things to come?

Grand Slam IV

So, if you are familiar with the Smogon Tournaments candle, it's about that time... Grand Slam IV signups. This is a tournament that has gone down in infamy and is the building block of my div 1 tournament career. Most of you that are from around this time know it, maybe it's a story passed on to you by your resident smogon unc in your friend group. Multiple new users in my div 2 tours know about it and they were not around for it. Strap in for the story...You know your boy was excited for this tournament to start. I have a total of 5 posts in the Grand Slam IV introduction thread. They are, as follows:

HOLD :psyangry: HOSTS :psyangry: ACCOUNTABLE
Okay. Here's my LC open run:
Round 1: Sand Castle. Envy told me he's STILL active and played for Brazil in WCoP???
Round 2: Aurious. To the best of my knowledge, this is a tour player from Germany around that time.
Round 3: Yagura. Pairing friends should be criminal.
Round 4: Soulraiser
Round 5: breh
Round 6: Confide. Oh boy. I don't think I have it in me to timeskip to 2020 so let's just spill it: I win LC open again. I barely make playoffs by a point or 2 (I thought I missed for sure) and face confide R1. I maybe got unlucky in a game or whatever but literally lost lc and lost R1. Small consolation that he got to semis. The lore here is insane and it absolutely bears mentioning how much of an activity-fest this is, something that's only been matches in my series with Nelson:

1754184502717.png

okay, tbf I had a point here but my tone is crazy LMAO
1754184556195.png

I didn't realize I was down in this series. A lot of my career depends on this activity win.
1754184612128.png

average smogon tournament in 2015, half the games done by deadline
1754184643010.png

Tesung I'm confident you're never gonna see this but wtf goat. seriously have some respect for the Rules...
1754184697049.png

In a sense I feel bad. But I'm also glad I won - probably a 2015 me post

Semis: Meru. Apparently I got lucky here? No way he'd keep mentioning it otherwise. Probably did LOL the dude also lost a finals where the Ruiners got a little unlucky to the classiest (but lost by a decent margin) in the prior SPL so I guess we can feel bad for him here. Impressive result goat, the news do not know how good he was.

Finals: majaspic22/ZoroDark/me in RR. Clapped them both immediately (come back pls). I somehow never made a winpost for this with like all the replays and shoutouts and everything. The amount of support for me in the thread was wild.

ZoroDark made a prediction here. I didn't like this probably bc I was too nervous about the prediction coming false. Look at all the PO clowns liking this
1754185185792.png

I drew first blood:

1754184775925.png

omfg here it's so easy: "won, gg". that's all you need to type. then log off
A lot of my winning teams were fed to me by tahu and tazz (our relationships look very different right now, I think part of me getting into div 1 way earlier and different circles, I would literally play every tier) and I would not have been able to string this run without the support I got whatsoever. I actually do remember building a couple of teams; I loved CB foo for whatever ungodly reason.

This isn't the only person that gave me moral and team support, I feel like Shrug also supported me at some point. The Skype group with Minus Imanalt Camden Spy Magnemite etc was an immense form of moral support; Camden's the only one that stuck around in LC past around this period but Imanalt is importantly a 3-time LC open winner I believe as a manager (with this result, it's looking highly unlikely anyone will ever do it; neither Coco nor DC/cooper have won one).

So, mad0ka's post doesn't seem quite conciliatory towards my win. Perhaps it takes more to convince the queen of hax, you know it when you see it. mad0ka wasn't done after this, though: you'll have to check the log to see what went down or led to this. Here is the aftermath though:

An absolutely insane exchange where each user pre-empts each other, the loser fights a completely different user that was not part of it, and the third member of the round robin final who didn't even play mad0ka likefarms off of it. Oh never mind, I guess the mad0ka Ras final counts as done:

Melon's like absolutely looks like a stealth like here. Apparently it isn't. Good for you.

But what of mad0ka and Raseri's match?

The lore here is insane and it absolutely bears mentioning how much of an activity-fest this is, something that's only been matches in my series with Nelson:

okay, tbf I had a point here but my tone is crazy LMAO

I didn't realize I was down in this series. A lot of my career depends on this activity win.

average smogon tournament in 2015, half the games done by deadline

Tesung I'm confident you're never gonna see this but wtf goat. seriously have some respect for the Rules...View attachment 761258

Look at all the PO clowns liking this

omfg here it's so easy: "won, gg". that's all you need to type. then log off
A lot of my winning teams were fed to me by tahu and tazz (our relationships look very different right now, I think part of me getting into div 1 way earlier and different circles, I would literally play every tier) and I would not have been able to string this run without the support I got whatsoever. I actually do remember building a couple of teams; I loved CB foo for whatever ungodly reason.

This isn't the only person that gave me moral and team support, I feel like Shrug also supported me at some point. The Skype group with Minus Imanalt Camden Spy Magnemite etc was an immense form of moral support; Camden's the only one that stuck around in LC past around this period but Imanalt is importantly a 3-time LC open winner I believe as a manager (with this result, it's looking highly unlikely anyone will ever do it; neither Coco nor DC/cooper have won one).
why did u have to remind us that tcr exists
