So we're through the first week and there's been a huge amount of NU games, with 17 played already :v4:

This gives us some interesting stats to look at as we see how Barraskewda and Rhyperior (and the absence of Muk / Gastro) has affected the tier.

Some interesting points to me:
  • Barraskewda and Rhyperior both have very low usage. Seems to me a lot of people are not yet ready to bring them or haven't built new teams to take advantage of them
  • Chandelure was touted as the big winner of shifts, but has struggled for wins. On the flip side, Incin is massively overperforming, probably people are over prepping for Chand and Incin is the best check by far.
  • Munki, Tsareena, and Scrafty are struggling. All these mons were recently upgraded in the VR, looks like prep work is targeting these top tier trends and working?
 
Now that pools are finished and we've seen all 80 matches, it's a good time to look at the stats and also compare how teams performed vs their power rankings.

There are lots of interesting data points in here:
  • Dark types: Incineroar confirms its place as the tiers best Dark type with a solid winrate. Meanwhile Scrafty goes negative and Wo-Chien hovers around 9% usage. Overqwil also gets some usage, while Brute Bonnet is unimpressive winning only 2 of its 7 outings
  • Steel types: Bronzong continues as the most popular Steel, with Copper a reasonable alternative at 20% usage and similar winrate. Klefki actually picks up a bit ~62% winrate. Sandslash-Alola and Duraldon are bad, don't use these.
  • Removal: Tsareena is the most popular but struggles with a 40% winrate. Cinccino is less popular than it once was, but perhaps because of that is performing well at ~62% winrate. Altaria gets decent usage but ends up slightly negative, while Cramorant is much less used but is very effective winning 5/7 games.
  • The drops: Rhyperior has a huge 70% winrate and #8 in usage - is it a problem? Barraskewda seems to have found a comfortable niche with good usage and winrate, but hasn't caused Kilowattrels complete demise as some predicted
  • The "broken" mons: Chandelure is at 46% winrate despite having no real counters. Breloom is only used 8 times but has a great 75% winrate.
  • Underperformers: Previously dominant Basculegion is having a terrible time with 4/17 wins. Maybe teams are overprepping for Barraskewda, or maybe people aren't using the right sets? This one is confusing to me as it doesn't feel like Basc should be significantly worse than it was. Dudunsparce failed to get a single win in 8 uses.
  • Overperformers: Raikou is at nearly 70% winrate, as is Uxie. Meloetta is nearly at 60%, while Houndstone is nearly at 80%. It seems all of these benefitted from Muk-A leaving the tier. Meanwhile Scyther is sitting at 100% winrate...
Now, onto the teams and their records!
  1. US South (8-0) - no surprises here, they were ranked top and performed as expected (even if Shengineer continues to aura farm his opponents into throwing)
  2. UK (7-1) - this was also expected to go well and it did
  3. France (5-3) - France were ranked second, so this performance is fine for them, they showed their depth with Tuthur subbing in for 2 wins
  4. Brazil (5-3) - Good showing from Brazil who ranked 7th, especially since they subbed Ninja
  5. India (5-3) - Dugza carried but the ceiling here is even higher for India. 5th ranking was just about spot on
  6. USNE (5-3) - Ranked 6th, performed well. Another case of one player carrying (BJ) so there is room for improvement here
  7. China (4-4) - Ranked 11th China performed quite well without notable mainers in these slots
  8. Spain (4-4) - Ranked LAST Spain proved the haters wrong here going neutral all around and contributing to their playoff run
  9. Italy (4-4) - Ranked 14th Italy performed maybe slightly better than expected
  10. Argentina (4-4) - Another middle of the pack ranking (14th) performing as expected
  11. Belgium (3-5) - Ranked 16th, Belgium end up there or thereabouts, but notably new NU face Showl went 2-2, while Wappy.kBs was 1-3 they performed well in all the games and got some tough luck. Good to see these guys continue to perform
  12. Bangladesh (3-5) - Ranked 19 Bangla pick up more wins than expected. A nice showing from 16BR going 2-2 as well
  13. Germany (3-5) - Ranked 18th, 3 wins is maybe higher than expected but not by much
  14. Asia (3-4) - Gorex did the heavy lifting with 3-1, but it's not enough to push Asia past their 15th ranking
  15. LATAM (3-4) - Ranked 9th, going negative is probably a disappointment for LATAM, but it seems this was tough due to the sub. OLK does well with 3-1
  16. Europe (3-4) - Europe were ranked 12th, and while this was a little underwhelming as a result, we did get to see 5MGMatthew5 team tournament debut result in a win
  17. US West (3-4) - West flopped. Ranked 4th going in they are the big losers here, and it's all definitely Pokeslice's fault
  18. Canada (2-5) - Canada were ranked 9th so they won't be happy with this result
  19. US Midwest (2-5) - Similar to the above, coming in ranked 10th and only getting 2 wins is a hard tournament. Some luck was at play here as well
  20. Portugal (1-7) - Expectations were not high for Portugal (ranked 18th) but it's still tough to only get a single win
Overall the rankings were pretty accurate, other than some flopping from West and overperforming from Spain. Will be looking forward to seeing how the playoffs shape up!
