Project NBT S3W6: Talking in Your Sleep

S3W6: Talking in Your Sleep

After playing many games of GSC NU I have developed a severe addiction to using RestTalk. This week you all will feed (and justify) my addiction by creating the next best RestTalk Pokemon! The submitted set must have Rest and Sleep Talk. Other than that, go wild!

Submissions are due Sunday, July 20 at 7:00pm EST

The theorem of the Hypothetical Neymar

So the idea of a Guts mon effectively using Sleep talk is an old tale.

Guts Heracross has the physical bulk and raw atk to do something with it.

Atm the tier isnt very hospitable to even normal Heracross imagine to ST... But the potential is there.

Sleep +1 MH is devastating

Heracross @ Leftovers
Ability: Guts
Tera Type: Bug
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Megahorn
- Sleep Talk
- Bulk Up
- Rest

BTW! I was running Blunder Policy, found out is the best way to hit a move. As soon as I swapped to leftys I started missing.

Grimmsnarl @ Leftovers
Ability: Prankster
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Spe
Careful Nature
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Bulk Up
- Spirit Break

There's been some minor Grimmsnarl hype recently in NU. This set takes a different approach to its bulk up sets to become an efficient cleaner. While typical Grimmsnarl sets have trouble picking 4 moves, spirit break works perfectly as a sole attacking move due to its lack of immunities and guaranteed special attack drop. Prankster gives priority bulk up, rest, and even a priority spirit break chance with sleep talk.

Grimmsnarl's EV's and spirit break give it setup opportunities against special attackers, while priority bulk up allows it to also sit in front of physical attackers. It can also function to take special hits and absorb status early game as with rest, it does not need to be protected until its ready to sweep. 4 Speed EVs are added to out speed Sylveon and hit it with spirit break. Additional speed is optional to out speed those in the 166-176 range but I chose to maximize bulk since most of your moves have priority anyway. Tera steel flips the sylveon and munkidori matchup. Since most ground and fighting moves in the tier are physical, this also makes Grimmsnarl very difficult to take down once boosted.

I didn't play too many games with it so far but here is an example in high ladder where it was able to set up on non-SD Rhyperior of all things after it received momentum:
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen9nu-2404054752

As for 1v1s vs other common setup mons:
- It obviously wins the scrafty matchup, but if Scrafty tera's the best it can do is stall out drain punches.

- It 2 shots non-tera spdef poison heal Breloom after a protect. If it has no attack investment, so long that you survive this calc you are likely to win:
0 Atk Breloom Facade (140 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Grimmsnarl: 179-211 (45.4 - 53.5%) -- 1.2% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
- Test replay vs spdef Breloom (no tera): https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen9nu-2404066484
- With your own tera steel, you can beat tera electric Breloom as shown: https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen9nu-2404069387
- If Breloom is tera normal, you probably lose due to this calc preventing you from stalling with rest:
0 Atk Tera Normal Breloom Facade (140 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Tera Steel Grimmsnarl: 134-158 (34 - 40.1%) -- 37.3% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

- It beats Dudunsparce due to spirit break, as shown in this test replay. Probably didn't play optimally but it proves the point:
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen9nu-2404067029
- If Dudunsparce uses tera, you can still beat it with your own tera, using spirit break and bulk up to overwhelm it as shown here:
https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen9nu-2404070324

Overall, due to its unpredictability, and how quickly Grimmsnarl can snowball late game, I think it could be worth trying out as another viable win con to the NU tier!

Reserving Le Froge

Poliwrath @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Water Absorb
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 252 HP / 236 Def / 20 Spe
Impish Nature
- Circle Throw
- Knock Off
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Nevermind :(

Bronzong @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Levitate
Tera Type: Water
EVs: Lots of EV sets depending on what you want it to do, I generally just go 252 HP 252 SpDef.
Relaxed/Sassy Nature
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Iron Head/Heavy Slam
- Psychic Noise

This set turns Bronzong into a great wall with a crippling lack of recovery into a great wall with recovery. A great byproduct of RestTalk is that Zong no longer relies so heavily on Leftovers, meaning it can run Rocky Helmet to get chip damage on pivots such as Munkidori and Barraskewda. Iron Head is much more consistent than Heavy Slam, especially into Rhyperior and Avalugg, but Heavy Slam will OHKO Diancie, which Iron Head does not. Psychic Noise prevents it from being abused for free heals by Vaporeon and such and is solid stab move.

Tauros-Paldea-Aqua @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Intimidate
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 248 HP / 240 Def / 20 Spe
Impish Nature
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Body Press
- Raging Bull

This set was extremely cool during the Muk meta, but with the drop of Rhyperior and the rise of Incin again for Chandy, it's so back. Genuinely one of the more fun sets out there right now and a great soft check to a ton of Pokemon

:sv/lapras:
Hourglass (Lapras) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Water Absorb
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 24 HP / 252 Def / 232 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Freeze-Dry
- Psychic Noise
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Resttalk turns Lapras' biggest vulnerability (bulk without recovery) into a formidable tank. Freeze-Dry provides more than enough coverage on its own, while Psychic Noise is there more to prevent opponents from Resttalking. The EV spread survives CB Close Combat from Barraskewda with the rest in Special Attack.

252+ Atk Choice Band Barraskewda Close Combat vs. 24 HP / 252+ Def Tera Fairy Lapras: 86-101 (21.1 - 24.8%) -- guaranteed 5HKO
232 SpA Tera Fairy Lapras Freeze-Dry vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Barraskewda: 294-348 (111.7 - 132.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

This is like the above tauros set, but better (okay, the above set is prob better, but this is funnier)

:sv/tauros paldea blaze:
Tauros-Paldea-Blaze @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Intimidate
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 248 HP / 240 Def / 20 Spe
Impish Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Will-O-Wisp
- Body Press

You do nothing into chandelure, but everything else hates either taking a wisp or a body press. And its generally able to leverage its typing to take on a multitude of mons such as copperajah, incineroar, decidueye and more.

Rest Talk Goodra
:ss/goodra:
Goodra @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Sap Sipper
Tera Type: Ghost/Steel
EVs: 248 HP / 44 Def / 216 SpD
Careful Nature
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
- Dragon Tail
- Knock Off

The Stall in NU guy has returned with another vile creation. Rest talk helps goodra be a more reliable special wall with less reliance on wish pass, and lets it pull faster dragon tails against walls to rack up hazard damage while also being able to knock off the boots from said walls. I hit the jump number in spdef and put extra points into defense to help its weaker stat just a little bit since goodras spdef is already quite high, and for tera types steel is great for covering goodras weaknesses and ghost not only lets it block rapid spins itself, but also shuts down poison heal breloom (that aren't running the thunder punch set) with its added immunity to seed bomb thanks to sap sipper. I used this set on a hazard based stall team for LTWC and it completely shut down CM dudunsparce (also shout outs to lumi the dog)

RestPerior
:sv/rhyperior:
Rhyperior @ Leftovers
Ability: Solid Rock
Tera Type: Dragon / Steel / Grass
EVs: 248 HP / 16 Atk / 192 SpD / 52 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Tail
- Earthquake
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Rhyperior is super tanky, great a trading, but has no natural way to heal itself. Enter RestPerior! This set is intended to keep rhyperior around longer and to continually phase the enemy team to rack up damage on hazard stack. I went for a fairly standard spread here (belibolt speed, jump point in attack, rest in special bulk) but that 16+ could also go in spdef. Tera type is team dependent but dragon has some great resists and boosts dragon tail which we are intending to click a whole lot!

1. Loocas13
2. Diamonds_Realm
3. toshimelonhead

I was going to give a point to Be13costa, but his best friend gave it the following analysis:

"The Theorem of the Hypothetical Neymar" is an apt title, because this Heracross set exists purely in theory and collapses under the lightest scrutiny in practice. It’s not just a bad idea—it’s an archaeological relic from a metagame that never existed.

:sv/tornadus:
Tornadus @ Psychic Seed

Ability: Prankster

Tera Type: Dark

EVs: 248 HP / 60 Atk / 200 Spe

Nature: Adamant

Moveset:
  • Bulk Up
  • Rest
  • Sleep Talk
  • Acrobatics

Overview & Role on Psychic Terrain Offense Teams:

This Tornadus set is a unique and effective bulky setup sweeper tailored specifically for Psychic Terrain offense teams, where it synergizes perfectly with the terrain’s effects and common team structures.

Psychic Terrain teams typically revolve around powerful setup or wallbreaking threats that benefit from the blocking of priority moves and terrain-boosted Psychic-type attacks. This Tornadus uses Psychic Seed to immediately gain a +1 Special Defense boost upon terrain activation, giving it crucial bulk to begin setting up with Bulk Up.

Once boosted, Tornadus becomes difficult to break on both sides of the spectrum, while Acrobatics—now itemless after the seed is consumed—becomes a powerful 110 BP STAB attack with no drawbacks. Rest + Sleep Talk provides it with long-term longevity, letting it shrug off status and damage while still having chances to attack or further boost during sleep.

Set Details:
  • 248 HP EVs provide maximum overall bulk with optimal HP for Rest cycles.
  • 200 Speed EVs with an Adamant nature allow Tornadus to outspeed base 90s (like Garchomp or Landorus-T) and many unboosted mid-speed threats.
  • 60 Attack EVs with Adamant ensure Acrobatics hits meaningfully after a Bulk Up or two.
  • Tera Dark grants a Ghost resistance, immunity to Prankster Taunt, and lets Tornadus take Psychic hits better from opposing Terrain abusers like Indeedee or Iron Crown. It also blocks Prankster status moves like Encore or Thunder Wave if used before Terrain is set.
Usage Tips:
  • Lead or early pivot: Tornadus can safely come in early on neutral or resisted hits and begin setting up Bulk Ups once Psychic Terrain is active and Seed is consumed.
  • Tera defensively or offensively: Tera Dark can be used situationally to flip matchups against Ghost- or Psychic-type threats and gain better rest cycles.
  • Use Rest strategically: Once you’ve accumulated a couple of Bulk Ups and weakened the opposing team’s special attackers, Rest can give you the reset needed to sweep or wall.
  • Keep in mind Sleep Talk RNG—it can whiff if unlucky, so time your Rest wisely and avoid relying on it mid-pressure if possible.

Team Support:

This set thrives on Psychic Terrain teams, often paired with:
  • Indeedee-F or Indeedee-M – sets Psychic Terrain and provides initial momentum or pivoting.
  • Scream tail, espeon, magcargo
  • Hazard support.
  • Taunt or Encore blockers are less necessary due to Tera Dark and Psychic Terrain, but Trick blockers or Knock Off absorbers (like Dark-types) help maintain your core integrity.

Conclusion:

This Tornadus set is an underutilized but dangerous win condition that capitalizes on the safety net provided by Psychic Terrain. Its sustain, scaling power, and immunity to priority disruption make it a natural fit for offensive terrain archetypes, and when played correctly, it can win games on its own once opposing special threats are neutralized.

Let me know if you’d like a sample team built around this!
