Monotype Rising Sets
:sv/ogerpon wellspring:
:sv/iron moth:
:sv/wo-chien:

Welcome to the fifth edition of the Monotype Rising Sets that aims to unveil the future of Monotype. You have been using an unknown set for a long time or have just thought about a new way of using a Pokémon? Come sharing your findings with the community!

This event will be run in the form of a contest. You will have 3 weeks to submit ONE set of your choosing for whichever Pokémon, before a poll is launched in the Monotype room to determine the winning set.

/!\ Please note that based on the results of the second survey launched, some changes will be applied for this edition onwards. To make them easier to spot, they will be put in Red. /!\

Rules:
  • Only one post per person is allowed.
  • Both the Pokémon and the set you want to feature are up to you.
  • A set is valid if and only if it does not exist in the Monotype SV SmogDex.
  • Item/Move-swap sets are not allowed, unless they change fundamentally the way the Pokémon is used.
  • You may import your set from your PS! teambuilder or write it down.
  • Your set proposition must include the following elements: set, description, potential teammates, and either replays or damage calculations.
  • Replays and damage calculations must showcase the set's uniqueness, so choose them wisely.
  • Please convey the uniqueness of your set while avoiding emphatic language ("It's the greatest set ever!")
  • Do not react to other submitted sets in your post, focus on yours.
Hereunder you will find the accepted format for submissions as well as an example of accepted and rejected sets.

They should be commented and help you to make your point.

Barraskewda @ Choice Band
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Liquidation
- Flip Turn
- Close Combat
- Poison Jab

Changing one coverage move by another does not change the way the set is used, it is still Choice Band Barraskewda inside.
Barraskewda @ Heavy-Duty Boots / Muscle Band
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Liquidation
- Flip Turn
- Close Combat
- Psychic Fangs

By swapping Choice Band with HdB or Muscle Band, the way the pokémon is used drastically changes. Now Barraskewda acts as an Offensive Pivot, which comes with its own perks. Changing the moveset is not mandatory, but it does not mean the moveset should be lazily copy/pasted from an existing set. Your moveset should always be backed up with arguments.

Rewards:
  • ^ rank on Monotype room for a month
  • The winning set will be featured in the Monotype room
  • Addition of the set in the SmogDex

If you feel the heart of a builder, come sharing your best craft with the community!

Deadline for set submission is August 28th @ 11:59pm GMT-5

Wallbreaker Urshifu (Water)
Urshifu-Rapid-Strike @ Choice Band
Ability: Unseen Fist
Tera Type: Fighting
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly / Adamant
- Close Combat
- Surging Strikes
- Ice Spinner
- Aqua Jet

Choice band allows Urshifu to hit HARD, immediately, without having to use a turn for setting up. With just this item, Urshifu finds OHKO’s and 2HKO’s on some of the most defensive Pokemon in the entire tier. It also allows it coverage it normally wouldn’t have on a swords dance set in Ice Spinner, as well as stab priority in Aqua Jet.

work in progress

Teammates
Wallbreakers like Urshifu really enjoy being paired with a bulky pivot. These are Pokemon that can take a hit, then use a pivoting move like Flip Turn, U-Turn, or Volt Switch to bring Urshifu onto the field.

Bulky Pivots such as :swampert:, :slowking: , :Rotom-wash: , :alomomola: , :empoleon: all come to mind as great teammates for Urshifu (ranked from best to worst). Slowking has especially good synergy with Urshifu as it can run the move Future Sight, which will strike a Pokemon on the opponent’s side with a 120 BP Psychic move at the end of the next turn. Any Dark type trying to switch in to take the Future Sight, will fear a Choice Banded Close Combat/Surging Strikes and anything that can take a hit from Urshifu will not appreciate a Future Sight. Even Pokemon like physically defensive Toxapex, can drop due to this combination after a little bit of chip damage. Slowking also has the option of running thunder wave, slowing down fast threats for Urshifu to nab KO’s on Pokemon usually out of its reach. You can even greed an adamant nature if you run this combination.

Urshifu also likes being paired with offensive pivots as well. These are Pokemon that can threaten huge damage onto your opponent, making them likely to switch out, thus providing a potential switch-in opportunity using a pivoting move (such as flip turn/u-turn) giving Urshifu another avenue to hit the field.

Offensive Pivots such as:Samurott-Hisui: , :primarina: , :greninja: , :quaquaval: , :ogerpon-wellspring:all come to mind as great offensive pivots for Urshifu (ranked from best to worst). Urshifu pairs especially well with Hisuian Samurott as it can threaten the Psychic and Ghost types that threaten Urshifu, as well as setup spikes for it to limit your opponent’s defensive options when switching into Urshifu.

Urshifu also appreciates hazard setters, as they can turn 2HKO’s into OHKO’s and even allow it to OHKO water weak Pokemon with Aqua Jet.

Hazard setters such as :swampert: , :samurott-hisui: , :ogerpon-wellspring:, :greninja: are all great hazard setters for Urshifu (ranked best to worst). Swampert is Urshifu’s best hazard setting partner, as it gives Urshifu a slow pivot onto the field, takes most hits, and can threaten Psychic and Ghost types with Knock Off.

Most Fairy types (especially Pokemon such as :flutter mane: and :iron valiant: ) threaten Urshifu with an OHKO or do huge damage to it due to its especially low Special Defense stat and middling speed. No matter what your other teammates are, Urshifu should almost always be paired with :Toxapex: , as it can check/wall most of the Fairy Types that threaten Urshifu.

Specs Raging Bolt (Dragon)
Raging Bolt @ Choice Specs
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Electric
EVs: 32 Hp / 252 SpA / 224 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 20 Atk
- Volt Switch
- Thunderclap
- Draco Meteor
- Thunderbolt
Specs give Bolt more immediate power while also allowing us to use volt switch to pivot.
The speed evs let us outspeed most gliscor, bulky ghold, and defensive arch.

For teammates we obviously want arch+hoodra for walls and I was using boots dnite, scarf latias, and specs pult but those three could be changed if you want.
252+ SpA Choice Specs Raging Bolt Thunderclap vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Iron Valiant: 295-348 (102 - 120.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Raging Bolt Thunderclap vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Meowscarada: 262-309 (89.4 - 105.4%) guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock this is after type change from protean
I like these two Thunderclap calcs

Glide Spam Ogerpon Heartflame (Grass):
Ogerpon-Hearthflame (F) @ Hearthflame Mask
Ability: Mold Breaker
Tera Type: Fire
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Grassy Glide
- Ivy Cudgel
- Horn Leech

:ogerpon:
With the availability of Terrain Extender in SV Monotype, Grassy Glide spam emerges as a potent strategy, enabling Ogerpon forms to leverage a powerful priority move to break through challenging matchups like Dragon and Poison. Ogerpon-Hearthflame, in particular, boasts formidable ability and damage output and can opt for an Adamant nature to secure key KOs / 2HKOs against notable threats.

Teammate:
:rillaboom: :terrain extender:
1) Rillaboom with Terrain Extender enables this strategy consistently, packing Taunt to shut down entry hazard setter like Araquanid & Skarmory and U-turn to send out Ogerpon and their teammate easily.

:abomasnow:
2) Abomasnow is also a great partner due to its valuable Aurora Veil, which lets Ogerpon has plentiful of chances to setup.

Calcs:

+2 252+ Atk Hearthflame Mask Ogerpon-Hearthflame Grassy Glide vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Dragapult in Grassy Terrain: 184-217 (58 - 68.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery

+2 252+ Atk Hearthflame Mask Mold Breaker Ogerpon-Hearthflame Grassy Glide vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Latios in Grassy Terrain: 174-205 (57.8 - 68.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery

+2 252+ Atk Hearthflame Mask Ogerpon-Hearthflame Grassy Glide vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Sneasler in Grassy Terrain: 220-259 (73 - 86%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery

+2 252+ Atk Hearthflame Mask Ogerpon-Hearthflame Grassy Glide vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Excadrill in Grassy Terrain: 438-516 (121.3 - 142.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Specially Defensive Incin (Dark)
Incineroar @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Intimidate
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 248 HP / 212 SpD / 48 Spe
Careful Nature
- Knock Off
- Flare Blitz
- Will-O-Wisp
- Parting Shot

Evs can be changed, just copy/pasted the NU set. Essentially, Parting shot is a nice pivot move to help stuff like Goltres and Weavile setup (along with intim + wisp), and knock + blitz is a hard check to Volcarona, in conjunction with Sableye's Encore. Faces some competition with Muk-Alola, but Fire typing gives you a Ice resist which can be nice defensively, also checks Wisp Volcarona effectively unlike Muk.

Double Dance Weakness Policy Latias - Dragon

Latias (F) @ Weakness Policy
Ability: Levitate
Tera Type: Dragon
EVs: 252 HP / 172 Def / 84 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Calm Mind
- Agility
- Stored Power
- Draining Kiss

Was bored and trying to spice up dragon a bit and decided to try make a funny set that can clean unexpectedly. Enter Weakness Policy Latias. This thing is so good into so many matchups. A lot of people expect it to be scarfed or a set of a similar nature, which allows you to somewhat freely get a calm mind or agility off, and taking advantage of latias' natural bulk, eat a hit, get weakness policy boosted, and clean. It's an effective cleaner that can sweep through full teams surprisingly easy. Moreover, with sceens support from a mon like dragapult, it becomes almost ridiculously bulky, and with one agility can outspeed almsot everything in the meta. The spread is able to outspeed scarf flutter mane at +2 speed, and the rest is in physical defence for more bulk, and draining kiss to hit dark types and provide some recovery. This basically beats multiple types on its own, including electric, water, fighting, fire and flying, and with good support can do really well into multiple other types.

Good teammates include dragapult for screens support, dragonite or kommo as other setup sweepers that can take advantage of screens as well as ease the steel matchup, and then garchomp for hazards support and to further help vs steel.

Amoonguss @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD or 248 HP / 104 Def / 156 SpD
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Giga Drain
- Clear Smog
- Sludge Bomb / Leaf Storm
- Leaf Storm / Foul Play

[SET COMMENTS]
Assault Vest Amoonguss provides a unique utility role for special walls on Poison as it can comfortably take on most Water-, Electric-, and Ground-types special attackers such as Primarina, Raging Bolt, and Landorus without much problem. Giga Drain of course remains the main offensive tool putting pressure onto the likes of Keldeo, Rotom-W, and Landorus. Clear Smog enables Amoonguss to easily prevent Primarina and Raging Bolt from using it as setup food. For its next two options Amoonguss is fairly flexible for what it can run, Sludge Bomb can spread Poison and helps to pressure Flying-types like Zapdos and Enamorus as they come in to tank Giga Drain. Leaf Storm offers up incredible burst damage managing to obtain guaranteed OHKOs on the likes of Urshifu-R and offensive Great Tusk. Foul Play makes use of Amoonguss still solid physical bulk still enabling it to check DDance Dragapult and Iron Boulder locked into Earthquake. Hex can make use of Poison's Status spreading capabilities giving Amoonguss a new level of offense, notably making it a surprisingly good threat in the mirror into foes like Pecharunt and Galarian Slowking, especially the later who will often eat a Wisp early to get Future Sight pressure online. The EV Spreads provide two different levels of bulk. Spread A goes all in on Specially defensive Amoonguss maximizing its bulk giving it the best shot possible into special offensive threats, notably giving it a 31.6% chance to survive two Zapdos Hurricanes, while spread B enables it to comfortably handle Great Tusk after Stealth Rock and still check Ogerpon-W with Clear Smog into Sludge Bomb (Spread A can also kind of do that, but its a lot shakier).

[Teammates]
Traditional Amoonguss teammates will have a similar value here as they normally. That being said, Pecharunt does appreciate AV Amoonguss as a more comfortable water check compared to Pex while running Clear Smog + Sludge Bomb may make Alolan Muk's flex slot option more enticing to play with (this is where you run something over Pjab). You could also opt to go double AV running vest Amoonguss and Galarian Slowking which could enable an Overqwil > Alolan Muk if you're so inclined.

Stomping Tantrum with a Sassy Nature if Amoonguss's cards are played right can allow the Mushroom to check Iron Moth and Heatran in a pinch along with putting solid pressure onto the likes of Empoleon, Hisuian Goodra, doubly do if you go for the double power hit, and preventing it from being too passive in the Poison Mirror as well by OHKOing the corrosion spreaders. Also its valuable for dealing with Raging bolt as you won't need to use Clear Smog once Air Balloon is popped allowing you to keep up the pressure without resetting Draco Meteor to full power (forcing them to instead Calm Mind back up)
Spore can be used as a surprise tool as if Amoonguss takes a weak off Knock Off from the likes of Alolan Muk, Sableye, and the aforementioned Empoleon and Hisuian Goodra, it can re enable Amoonguss's most powerful utility option and can come completely out of nowhere as most will not expect it. This is less of a commitment that one would think as the only essential moves in AV Amoonguss in my opinion are just Giga Drain and Clear Smog.

Hydrapple @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Infestation
- Fickle Beam
- Yawn
- Protect

A trapping set on grass that really is a multitool of versatility on a type that needs to cover so many bases. This Hydrapple works to trap passive pokemon, scout choiced items, whittle away at HP, and be an excellent defensive check. On a surface level, trapping and yawn means opponents are essential stuck with no options, which you can take advantage of with fickle beam or switch to a set up pokemon to sweep. With this set though, yawn will force people to switch and infestation will chip away slowly which adds to a hazards stacking strategy and allow for ogerpon or meow to get the ranges necessary to clean up. Although the best comparison to make is against amoonguss which would fill a similar role, this hydrapple is more physically bulky and also less passive and predictable. While a simple set, it makes a big impact on winning bad matchups with less luck dependency and changed my mind on the best way to use apple on grass.

Teammates:
Ogerpon-H and meowscarda make great partners but are also almost essential for any grass team. Whimsicott has been one of the best partners forming a sort of core because it can switch on dragon moves and pokemon that want to set up on it. In addition, whimsicotts leech seed also really encourages switching which complements hazard stacking. For that strat, bramble works great to spin away hazards like t spikes and put spikes of its own, and tort is the only stealth rock setter and a good answer to poison types. This is a team that incorporates those elements: https://pokepast.es/bdd440db6e97832d

Other possible teammates may include spd amonguss for double regen, abomasnow to check ice types and set veil, or sinistcha for set up.

The Magician (Meowscarada) (Dark)
Meowscarada @ Expert Belt
Ability: Protean
EVs: 252 Spe / 252 Atk / 4 SpDef
Jolly Nature
-Knock Off
-Flower Trick
-Triple Axel
-Play Rough / Thunder Punch / U-Turn

For a while now, Monotype Dark has concreted itself as one of the most versatile, offensive types in the current metagame, even with notable deadly threats like Kingambit and Chien Pao gone, the type itself still finds plenty of diversity, uses, and many surprises that surely leaves the opponent to pick their next move carefully to understand what set a pokemon runs, such as Hoopa-U, Greninja, or Darkrai. but in some cases there are pokemon who are restricted or at the very least, best utilized with only one sort of item that let's it do the work during battles whether it was by speed or by power, The Choice Items, which is best seen in numerous sets like the aforementioned pokemon and many more, but one of the other pokemon on this list that was always bound to be stuck by them, is Meowscarada
meowscarada (1).png

Access to Protean allowing it to change types upon clicking the move, a colorful movepool giving it plenty of coverages versus various matchups, and respectable offensive stats has solidified Meowscarada to be one of Dark's must haves on teams courtesy of it's quick feet (or paws i guess lol) and power that allows it to be one of the key players of the type. but even key players have their limits and weaknesses that doesn't allow them to do what they want for as long as they want. because Meow has found itself to be almost always locked onto one move which will either give it the speed it needs to revenge kill something or deal heavy damage to it, or enough power to eliminate it for the rest of the game. But the thing with Monotype Dark is that with how many options there are that can utilize the same principle as Meowscarada, it wouldn't bind it to serving the purpose of holding choice items since there are more than 4 pokemon capable of running choice scarf, and only two or three that can hold the band. and this is where we come to the idea of retaining Meowscarada's offensive prowess and stupendous Speed with another item that also does not punish it whatsoever, the Expert Belt.

This lets Meowscarada to maintain the freedom of clicking any move it desires and prove to be a surprise factor, and even though it will not become STAB if it's using two moves on two different pokemon, it will allow it to either hurt the enemy pokemon for decent damage, or maybe pick up the surprise KO that most players do not expect to see from a Meowscarada that already clicked its move that they may have scouted for assuming its a choice item, notable example can be Gliscor, and it also powers up its move significantly so that rolls already seen on Choice Band stills are still somewhat maintained albeit at lesser power. Such as Toxapex, Amoonguss, Skarmory or Gliscor to name some of the painful physical defenses that Meow might find itself incapable of defeating (Ignoring Amoonguss that can die to Choice Band Triple Axel).

There is no significant change to the moveset that Meowscarada wants to run with the 4th move slot being a freebie that ultimately depends on what you want, Play Rough for the Fighting MU, Thunder Punch to guarantee the OHKO on Pelipper and still ensure the 2HKO on Toxapex, and U Turn in the case you want a form of pivot for when Meowscarada is against an unfavorable matchup.

Teammates:
-A Choice Scarf user such as
1755077807421.png
1755077851746.png
1755077911566.png
or
1755077940861.png
are all greatly appreciated for Meow and Dark entirely as they provide the speed control against various speed demons of the metagame including the deadly Flutter Mane
-Defensive Staples such as
1755077989876.png
1755078031878.png
1755078082268.png
1755078164695.png
are appreciated as they give respectable bulk allowing the possibility of surviving some super effective hits with neutrality or immunity.

-Offensive teammates such as
1755078207209.png
1755078237575.png
1755077807421.png
are also appreciated as they aid in the wall-breaking process.

Moon Trapper (Roaring Moon)
Roaring Moon @ Covert Cloak / Shed Shell
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Dragon
EVs: 168 HP / 44 Att / 252 Def / 12 SpD / 32 Spe
Impish Nature
- Jaw Lock
- Taunt
- Dragon Dance
- Roost

Set Description
Generally attracting mons like :Toxapex:, :Amoonguss:, :Clodsire:, defensive :Gliscor:, :hippowdon: once eject button has been activated Roaring Moon can trap them and strat to setting up freely against them. With Taunt you avoid Toxic, Spore, weird set ups, Recover. Covert Cloak allows to set up without caring about Poison Jab / Sludge Bomb / Scald or stat drops while Shed Shell allows to switch if your opponent brings not the good mon since Jaw Lock traps you too.
The given spread allows to maximise physical defense taking around 20 to 30% from those mons and also 99.7% max from Draco Meteor of a defensive Archaludon. You are gonna take maximum 49.8% by Foul Play at +6 and Body Press defensive Archaludon and 100% KO Urshifu-R after SR + 3 spikes. The speed allows to outspeed Dragapult at +1 if your oppo tries to click once more Draco Meteor with specs Latios against you which should kill regular offensive Roaring Moon.

Teammates
You need hazards to get some kills against some resisting mons at +6 like Urshifu-R :Urshifu-Rapid-strike: so Garchomp :Garchomp: with or without Archaludon :Archaludon: are good teammates. You also want Dragapult :Dragapult: spreading status which is a nice combo with Archaludon to help setting up. Against flying you want something to break like Latios :Latios:. A way to comeback to have a 2nd chance with Latias :latias: healing wish is a nice option. Obviously you want a SpDef wall like Goodra-Hisui :Goodra-hisui: for fairy and ice moves and also knock off some heavy duty boots, leftovers, etc. Kommo-o :kommo-o: likes this set since it will struggle against very bulky mon while helping against dark and offensive mons with its priority.

Since Dragon is so overwhelming you can even be more creative, I only have 2 teams with it.
