Earth Power hits Fire-resistant foes such as Skeledirge and opposing Flash Fire Heatran. Solar Beam with Sun present allows Heatran to hit Water-types such as Slowking and Rotom-W that would normally wall it, but Dark Pulse is another option that hits Latios and doesn't rely on sun being up, improving Heatran's matchup against Chilly Reception Slowking. Taunt allows Heatran to stop recovery attempts from Pokemon such as Skeledirge and Gastrodon. Stealth Rock is another option, as Heatran has a good matchup versus entry hazard removers such as Excadrill as long as Air Balloon is intact. On Hyper Offense teams, Heatran can run this alongside Taunt to dominate the early hazard game. Flash Fire gives Heatran a power boost if it is able to switch into Skeledirge or opposing Heatran's Fire-type attacks, meaning even Fire-resistant targets such as Rotom-W can struggle to take Magma Storm. Air Balloon gives Heatran a one-time switch-in opportunity against Ground-types such as Excadrill and Gastrodon, allowing Heatran to hit them for massive damage without fearing retaliation while also walling opposing Heatran's attacks. Power Herb lets Heatran potentially lure in Slowking and KO it with Solar Beam when sun is no longer up. A Modest nature allows Heatran to 2HKO Skeledirge with Earth Power and possibly 2HKO Assault Vest Tornadus-T with Magma Storm. A Timid nature allows Heatran to outspeed the likes of utility Excadrill and Slither Wing. Tera Ghost lets Heatran take Close Combats from the likes of Slither Wing, Cobalion, and Galarian Zapdos. However, Heatran does lose its Dragon resistance, making Pokemon such as Latios and Hydreigon much more difficult to answer while also becoming weak to Dark-types moves from foes such as Lokix and Zarude that it would normally answer.
Heatran fits best on hyper offense teams, particularly sun teams; these teams appreciate its ability to check Pokemon such as Tornadus-T and Skeledirge they might struggle with while applying massive offensive pressure. Ninetales is a great partner for Heatran, as it can set sun to remove Solar Beam's charge turn and boost the power of Magma Storm, making even Fire-resistant foes such as Hydreigon wary of switching into Heatran. Venusaur and Hisuian Lilligant can switch into Ground-types such as Excadrill and Clodsire that Heatran may struggle to beat if its Air Balloon is popped, while Heatran is able to threaten Pokemon such as Skeledirge and Revavroom that these Chlorophyll users may struggle to OHKO. Pokemon that can threaten Water-types, such as Ogerpon-C and Thundurus-T, are heavily appreciated by Heatran, as they can help against Pokemon such as Slowking and Gastrodon that Heatran may struggle to break. This is especially useful against Slowking, as it can deny Sun with Chilly Reception. Sets that lack Dark Pulse are heavily walled by Latios, as it can switch into any one of Heatran's attacks and launch a powerful Aura Sphere or Surf. Therefore, Pokemon such as Greninja that can help take on Latios pair well with Heatran.
