Welcome to the Not Fully Evolved Old Gens and OM Hub. This thread contains resources for the NFE tiers of older generations - Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon (USUM) NFE, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire (ORAS) NFE, Black and White (BW) NFE, and Diamond/Pearl/Platinum (DPP) NFE, Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald (ADV), Gold/Silver/Crystal (GSC) and Red/Blue/Yellow (RBY). This thread will also serve as a place to hold discussion about older generations of NFE. Each post contains Viability Rankings, sample teams, and a list of mechanics of the generation that is different from the current generation. Feel free to post your thoughts on a particular aspect of these metagames: successful cores, underrated Pokemon, teams you want feedback on, and anything else related to old gens NFE. We hope to bring these metagames more exposure.

NFE Viability Rankings
[last updated 03/09/2025]

These are the Viability Rankings for the NFE tier. Pokemon are ranked based on their positive and/or negative traits, including their splashability, effect on the metagame, and reliability, as well as numerous other factors. All Pokemon for now are ranked by alphabetical order. If you'd like to see a Pokemon change rank, please leave a constructive post here detailing the rank you'd like to see the Pokemon moved to, and provide evidence to support your reasoning. Most importantly, if you wish to nominate an unranked Pokemon to be ranked, replays are required.

NFE Role Compendium
[last updated 07/07/2025]
This is the Role Compendium for the NFE tier. Each Pokemon that is here is viable in the NFE metagame, and as such, it will change as the viability rankings get updated. Feel free to discuss below whether a Pokemon should be added to or removed from a certain role; however, please refrain from discussing the order of a given subsection unless something is completely off. Pokemon have been organized into five separate sections:

Section 1: Utility

With NFEPL right around the corner, the SS council has revamped. Please welcome council members:

We have also concluded a revamp on our VR slate in reflection of tours like NFEPL VII and NFE Triathlon. Posted below are the rises, drops, and new additions to the VR.
:Roselia: A+ -> S Roselia has blossomed to be a strong contender for the best Pokemon in the tier. Multiple excellent sets to run, a helpful typing, Spikes, and versatile stats make it a mandatory candidate to consider on teams and one of the most splashable to place on your own. Defensive sets remain as good as ever with some Speed investment, offensive sets are quite threatening, and customizability with options like Covet, Poison Point, and EVs makes this excellent for the metagame overall.
:Corsola-Galar: A -> A+ Corsola-Galar remains a top-tier physical wall. As a stopgap to many physical attackers and even weaker special attackers, Corsola-Galar's massive bulk and array of chip damage options like Night Shade and Whirlpool make it difficult to take down one-on-one without status and Knock Off. Helpful recovery in Strength Sap and additional utility with Stealth Rock and Will-O-Wisp makes it quite tedious to switch into without getting chipped significantly. Covering threats like Piloswine, Gurdurr, and Thwackey is especially valuable.
:Raboot: A -> A+ Another easy rise. Raboot's top-tier Speed combined with Libero makes it an elite revenge killer and a staple for balanced and offensive teams alike. Customizability with coverage like Gunk Shot or items like Choice Band make it very difficult to stop without the aid of walls like Corsola-Galar and Wartortle.
:Thwackey: A -> A+ Fellow SS superstar is a fantastic revenge killer and utility machine at the same time. The combination of Knock Off and U-turn combined with good overall stats makes it a simple fit on balanced and offensive teams alike looking for the progress it makes, not to mention the additional healing it provides to teammates without reliable recovery, like Gurdurr and Piloswine. Checking threats like Electabuzz, Wartortle, and Duosion makes it very appreciated. Choice Band, Swords Dance, and even Grassy Seed + Acrobatics sets have seen consistent use across multiple tours, showcasing how versatile and effective it is.
:Machoke: B+ -> A- While facing competition from Gurdurr, Machoke stands out through its higher Speed, allowing it to run Guts wallbreaker sets better. Dynamic Punch sets remain good for forcing switches on the confusion chances, especially when combined with Knock Off and hazard stacking.
:Koffing: B -> B+ Koffing's incredible physical bulk combined with Neutralizing Gas makes it a solid sidegrade to Galarian Corsola, being quite helpful in frustrating defensive Pokemon like Clefairy, Tangela, and Hattrem from using their abilities. Being one of the few viable Toxic Spikes setters also is helpful in a tier very vulnerable to hazards, especially with titans like Piloswine and Galarian Corsola being very vulnerable to status.
:Lairon: B -> B+ Lairon's typing remains quite helpful against walls like Clefairy and Vullaby. Choice Band Head Smash contains enough power to 2HKO Galaran Corsola after Stealth Rock, a feat not many Pokemon can pose.
:Slowpoke: B- -> B Slowpoke's rare access to Teleport (something Electabuzz, the frail Abra, and the niche Staryu also have) makes it a valued pivot on VoltTurn teams, and the status with either Thunder Wave or Toxic makes it helpful as a progress maker as well. Good physical bulk and recovery with Slack Off makes it surprisingly difficult to take down without good checks.
:Combusken: C+ -> B Combusken's trump card in Speed Boost makes it an irritating SubToxic user, able to rapidly wear down most non-Magic Guard threats and walls alike. Swords Dance sets are usable, but the lack of a strong physical Fighting STAB move is discouraging.
:Klang: C+ -> B Klang's access in Shift Gear makes it a threatening sweeper that dismantles teams late-game. A toxic immunity combined with customizable EVs and options like SubToxic, Three Attacks, and even Iron Defense makes this surprisingly versatile despite an overall shallow movepool.
:Palpitoad: C- -> C+ Palpitoad rises up as arguably Electabuzz and Wartortle's greatest check. It takes any attack from +2 Shell Smash Wartortle and avoids the 2HKO while cleanly chipping it away with Earth Power and Toxic, and has the bulk and typing to effectively wall special attackers with RestTalk.
:Vibrava: C- -> C While still quite underexplored, Vibrava remains an excellent Electabuzz check and either an acceptable Defogger or a surprise Toxic user to annoy Galarian Corsola and Tangela. Having access to U-turn and Roost gives it a leg up over Piloswine for its reliable recovery and synergizing well with U-turn teams.
:Electabuzz: S -> A+ No longer as dominant as once was. Trends like Roselia, Duosion Clefairy and Corsola-Galar are everywhere and no Knock Off makes it very hard to break them without prior support. It also can struggle against Piloswine and Ferroseed as its coverage can either be inaccurate or still not be sufficient to KO foes. It still sees innovation through Seismic Toss, Thief, and RestTalk sets and remains an elite Pokemon, but overall it struggles more against meta trends than it did before, and the drop reflects it.
:Clefairy: A+ -> A Clefairy gets a slight drop, with the main reasons being its passivity making in vulnerable to walls to attackers like Piloswine and Fraxure. While Magic Guard and an amazing movepool still make it a strong defensive consideration, as the meta developed, other walls like Galarian Corsola and Duosion have started competing for the same roles it does. While they lack Clefairy's versatility, their higher overall stats make it easier to fit on teams, and other lures like Heavy Slam Machoke and Flame Orb Gurdurr have also made its job as a wall harder. Still, Clefairy remains a very strong pick and a rock-solid choice to complete balanced and bulkier structures.
:Duosion: A+ -> A- Still remains one of the tier's important walls, though it faces notable competition for Hattrem as a defensive Psychic-type and Clefairy as a Magic Guard user. Regenerator sets remain great at walling threats like Electabuzz Rose and Wartortle, and Magic Guard sets remain potent if no Dark-types are there. Inherent flaws of lacking bulk if not invested, being very weak to item disruption, and deciding which ability it wants to take on are definite flaws, but it remains a very solid pick overall.
:Tangela: A+ -> A While Tangela still has massive physical bulk, Knock Off, and Regenerator, it's overall now a big step down from lacking Roselia's versatility (namely Spikes) and helpful Poison typing. With Vullaby and Roselia being commonplace, landing Sleep Powder becomes a much taller task and causes it to be luck-dependent to land crucial Sludge Bomb poisons, and the need to be bulkier overall (not just physically) is something Tangela also lacks over Roselia. Still a very solid candidate for a team that needs its physically defensive capabilities.
:Hakamo-O: A -> B+ Has faced a significant drop from its usage in previous metas. While Bulletproof makes it one of the hardest checks to Roselia in the game, competition from Gurdurr and Machoke have made it hard for Hakamo-O, owing to its lack of Knock Off and its Dragon typing being a double-edged sword. Vullaby running Brave Bird and Electabuzz commonly running Psychic, combined with trends like Clefairy, Duosion, and Corsola-G being commonplace, and Hakamo-O demands much more support to excel on teams than before. The dragon typing is helpful for Thwackey and Tangela, but it makes the Piloswine matchup worse and complicates its matchups to Fraxure and Gabite. While still tricky to guess on preview on account of its offensive and defensive sets still being solid, it's fallen from grace and their effectiveness is nowhere near as good as in previous metas.
:Ferroseed: A- -> B Ferroseed has immense trouble getting Spikes up against Hattrem even with Knock Off, and either Gyro Ball's limited PP or Iron Head's lack of power combined with its lack of Toxic makes it difficult to wear down walls in general. In addition, Ferroseed's reliance on Leech Seed for recovery combined with serious competition for the wall slot by Roselia, Tangela, and Koffing causes it to be much harder to slot on teams than before.
:Gabite: A- -> B+ Without Swords Dance, Gabite's lack of power is on full display. Its reliance on Toxic to damage foes leaves it hapless against foes like Clefairy, Hattrem, and Koffing, walls that remain ever-present in most NFE teams. Competition with other Dragons and PIloswine doesn't help it either.

:Linoone-Galar: A- -> B+ Linoone-Galar doesn't appreciate bans like Golbat and Magmar going away, and while Duosion is still a strong Pokemon and can threaten Roselia, its Speed tier is now a lot less of an important factor and often lacks sufficient power in a bulkier metagame.

:Marshtomp: A- -> B Marshtomp is still a consistent Electabuzz check, but the departure of Magmar and Pikachu takes away a lot of duties. It gets worn down really quickly from Raboot, hates getting statused, faces immense competition from Wartortle over its lack of Flip Turn and Shell Smash, and overall its passivity and often lacking damage output is a lot more glaring in a bulkier meta now.

:Gastly: B -> B- Gastly still has a lot of reward if it lands the right matchup, checking Roselia and possessing nice versatility in Choice sets or Knock Off utility, sporting positive matchups against Roselia and non-Knock Off Clefairy. However, the risk in its immense frailty makes it difficult to slot on teams without significant support.

:Ivysaur: B -> B- Ivysaur's access to Knock Off gives it an interesting role as a midground to Tangela and Roselia, but lacking Tangela's massive physical bulk or Roselia's versatility makes Ivysaur difficult to apply in practice. Sun teams are increasingly rare in the SS metagame, owing to a lack of good Chlorophyll and sun abusers, though its access to Weather Ball and Poison STAB gives it enough distinguishing features.

:Zweilous: B -> B- Zweilous's Hustle-boosted attacks can still disrupt team structures over its potential power, but its double-edged typing makes it very weak to common U-turn users and completely hapless against Clefairy. While a defensive set was used to check Magmar and can still be nice for Duosion, Hattrem, and Vullaby, the niche has narrowed since then and needs more support than before to do so.

:Abra: B- -> C+ Abra's non-existent bulk combined with competition with other fast special attackers like Electabuzz and Choice Scarf Lampent makes this increasingly difficult to fit on teams outside of being the team's emergency stopper to out-of-control revenge killers. Being very easy to identify on team preview what it does doesn't help matters either.

:Chinchou: B- -> C+ Wartortle's existence as a pivot combined with numerous other pivots makes Chinchou hard to justify to slot on teams. While it is still good at checking Electabuzz and Wartortle, its immense passivity makes it difficult to justify over other slots.

:Metang: B- -> C+ The Psychic subtyping firmly hurts Metang rather than helps. A weakness to Knock Off, a U-turn neutrality, and being overreliant on Toxic for damage output makes it difficult to justify on teams without building the team around it.

:Dwebble: C+ -> C While Dwebble faces competition as a Stealth Rock lead from Krokorok, it's moreso that dedicated Stealth Rock setters have a difficult time in NFE due to how other setters like Piloswine, Galarian Corsola, and Clefairy don't need to rely on being in the lead slot to excel. Even so, Krokorok has an easier time leading thanks to having a helpful STAB Knock Off and Taunt to more easily deter hazard removers.

:Gothorita: C+ -> C Gothorita's niche as being the sole Defog deterrent is challenged by its low Speed and mediocre special attack; it relies a lot on getting the Nasty Plot boost and likely also having Thunder Wave/Sticky Web support to truly start threatening teams. Its coverage for Roselia, Galarian Corsola, and Vullaby is still appreciated, however.

:Togetic: C+ -> C Togetic's Fairy typing and good special bulk might make it look like a great Defogger and cleric, but it's significantly hindered by its low Speed, Flying subtyping, and lack of a useful ability. Nasty Plot sets can still be notable against Vullaby, though the need for paralysis and Knock Off help to start being effective makes this difficult to build around. Competition from Morgrem, an already niche pick, also doesn't help.

:Torracat: C+ -> C Raboot makes Torracat's life hard. While its stats might seem good on paper, its shallow offensive coverage makes this much harder to fit on teams than one would expect, and easily walled by Water-types and most defensive behemoths.

:Omanyte: C -> C- Similar reasoning to Dwebble, though the typing and lack of Sturdy makes it comparatively harder to fit on HO structures.
:staryu: UR -> C+ Staryu's access to Recover and Natural Cure gives it an interesting niche over Wartortle as a Rapid Spin setter, and has enough bulk to take attacks with investment.
:Fletchinder: UR-> C Despite Fletchinder's reliance on Heavy-Duty Boots to cover its 4x Stealth Rock weakness, its nice typing makes it a cool deterrent to Raboot, Grass-types, and Piloswine with the proper investment. While it takes immense care to build around, it provides just enough support to be considered as a Defogger.
:Charmeleon: UR -> C- Sun-boosted Solar Power attacks are extremely difficult to check - not even Wartortle and Mareanie can stand up to Charmeleon's immense power over sun for Weather Ball. It is quite limited to Sun teams and matchup-fishy, however.
:Dusclops: UR -> C- Contrary to what people may believe, but Dusclops is a surprisingly effective bulky setup sweeper with Power-Up Punch. With a bit of Speed investment over Galarian Corsola and at +1, it can take on Roselia, Vullaby, and Electabuzz structures quite well. Decent coverage also helps, though its low initial power and Speed hold it back a lot.
:woobat: UR -> C- Similar to Swirlix, Woobat's Simple-boosted stats can spell immense trouble for teams without Vullaby or a status setter.

We also plan on revamping sample sets soon as NFEPL approaches. Stay tuned for updates, and let us know if any of you have questions on placements for certain Pokemon!

Really love the tier, i've had a great time building it, the meta seems pretty balanced too, nothing feels out of control, a great tier.

VR Nom
Rises
A+ -> S :electabuzz: Electabuzz is pretty much the reason why every team has a Ground type, and it's even able to break ground-types with HP Ice or Grass anyway so you kinda need a Grass to make sure to check it well, but Ebuzz can run Psychic, Focus Blast or Toxic to break the Grass as well. It's also the fastest Pokemon of the tier and is one of the few Golbat punisher of the tier which is very valuable to have in a team. Definitely a Pokemon that defines the meta imo

A+ -> S :pawniard: I was kinda tempted to let it in A+ but i feel like Pawniard is one of the first mons you should take into account in the builder. It denies defoggers which is huge in this tier given how strong Stealth Rocks are, it's able to break stuff pretty efficiently as well as sweeping weakened teams or even just be an absolute pain for Offense. I think Pawniard is up there as the top 3 Pokemons of the tier with Golbat & Electabuzz and i don't even think it's close between them and the rest of the tier, deserves the S imo.

A -> A+ :servine: Servine is a just insanely good, Knock Off + Glare gives so much utility to the team, especially if you want something to cripple golbat, and Servine can still act as a breaker or sweeper and even as a revenge killer thanks to Contrary + Leaf Storm being insane. Servine can even run HP Fire, Ground or Ice to break stuff (Ferroseed/Monferno/Golbat notably). It's just a pretty versatile Pokemon in itself and is one of the best Pokemon of the tier imo.

A- -> A :duosion: SpD Duosion can wall Magmar + Ebuzz which is pretty huge, Duosion can run Phys Def sets to lure Pawniard and kill it with HP Fight or check Golbat easily. Future Sight pretty much forces progress depending on your team, can even run CM sets. Overall a really good Pokemon with versatility, deserves A Rank.

B+ -> A- :misdreavus: People should stop playing Scarf Missy and should try using Sub NP, this is a really good wallbreaker to bring vs someone that brings passive stuff (Palpitoad, Clefairy, Wartortle, Roselia, Gabite...) it can come and setup on a lot of stuff and make big holes, the only real defensive check to it is Vullaby, Pawniard can't really revenge kill it due to sub + HP Fight so it's gonna come down to mind games. It can have some MUs where it just doesn't do much if you can't find the opportunity to setup but it's still good enough to be A- imo

B -> A- :wartortle: I think Resttalk Wart is criminally underrated in this VR, it is bulky enough to come on Magmar without having to run SpD EVs which is big and can check a lot of physical stuff. Also since burn is 12% in ORAS that makes Wartortle not that passive.

C+ -> B/B+ :vibrava: Vibrava is a good defensive pivot, pairs well with Magmar & Ebuzz because Vibrava can pivot on Grass or Water types for them and can run Defog for Magmar. Although you should not use Vibrava as the only removal imo, use double Defog or a Rapid Spin with it because Rockers don't really care about it and will just come on it again to set hazards up. Not having a Ground-type as your rocker is fine because we have other stuff like Clefairy, Ferroseed and Metang that can set Rocks up, so it makes Vibrava a lot easier to fit in teams.

Drops
S -> A+ :gurdurr: Gurdurr just doesn't feel like a S Tier mon, don't get me wrong it's good, but i don't think it is what defines the meta and i think S mons should be reserved to mons that define the meta.

A -> A- :marshtomp: Marshtomp is just outclassed by Gabite imo, it's good to use it sometimes to not be weak to Ebuzz or Magmar HP Ice but they have the same role and Gabite is just better because better Speed to outspeed stuff like Pawniard & Lampent, tho Marshtomp is more bulky so in teams with like Monferno i think it'd make sense to use Marshtomp over Gabite, it's not a crazy drop i just think Gabite is overall better.

SS
Personal VR noms
A+ -> S- :corsola-galar:Corsola-Galar ; Absolute nightmare to deal with as a defensive Pokemon, if you're not able to lure it and Toxic it with something it's gonna be extremely effective at dealing with offensive Pokemons. You can use Hattrem, Duosion and Clefairy as ways to stop Corsola-G from healing too much but with Calm Mind set rising so much in this last NFEPL it adds another layer in Corsola-G impact on the metagame that i think makes it deserving of entering the S- rank.

A+ -> S- :electabuzz:Electabuzz ; It's the reason why every team needs a Ground-type, and even then, Electabuzz rewards skill, often coming down to mind games with Tbolt/FBlast/Psychic vs staying with Vullaby, going Roselia, or going Piloswine. Fastest Pokemon of the tier, one of the few Vullaby punisher, Ebelt Ebuzz might be underexplored as well.

B+ -> A- :linoone-galar:Linoone-Galar ; It is pretty good at wallbreaking and heavily takes advantage of Hattrem teams while providing really good Speed control.

B -> B+ :slowpoke:Slowpoke ; A slow pivot with Regenerator is really good, being able to come on physical stuff like Raboot/Pilo or even defensive stuff to pivot safely into a breaker is really good, that's a mon i underrated but i feel like it has a lot of potential.

C+ -> B+ :staryu:Staryu ; Checks Raboot + Pilo, can check Lampent with the right spread, very fast, access to recover + rapid spin that is really valuable as well as Natural Cure that helps dealing with stuff running Toxic (notably Pilo), has access to Toxic to deny Corsola-G to spinblock for free, it's a really good option to let your Vullaby run something else over Defog which can be precious. Lets Roselia in for free tho

B- -> B :gastly:Gastly ; Its best set is Eviolite with Stabs Knock Off Pain Split to take advantage of Defensive Pokemons like Corsola-Galar, Clefairy, Gabite and Roselia to come and break Vullaby easily with Koff + Sludge Bomb.

C+ -> B :palpitoad:Palpitoad ; checking both Wartorlte and Ebuzz in one slot is really good, checks Lampent without Eball as well, it still holds the issue defensive Grounds have is that they rely on Rest for recovery so i can't put it much higher. But Water Absorb + Ground-type is valuable enough to make it B imo.

UR -> C- :farfetch'd-galar:Farfetch'd-Galar ; Scrappy + Final Gambit can be nice in HO, its a usable niche that can work.
S -> S- :roselia:Roselia ; Roselia defines the meta for sure but it's not as omnipresent as other S mons in Vullaby & Piloswine, many teams drop Roselia and are completely fine with it, whereas Vullaby & Piloswine are used in pretty much every teams at this point. Still S- tho because Roselia does define the meta.

A -> A- :wartortle:Wartortle ; Defensive set is outclassed by Staryu now and Shell Smash is usually a deadweight until the very end of the game, however it is a really strong sweeper so i don't see it dropping more than A-.

A- -> B+ :fraxure:Fraxure ; Pretty awkward to fit in teams, doesn't provide much utility and act more as a raw wallbreaker, it does need support to work imo with some VoltTurns and stuff to take down Clefairy so it can spam Outrage.

A- -> B+ :machoke:Machoke ; Overshadowed by Gurdurr, still good for its access to Dynamic Punch + No Guard but Gurdurr is just usually better due to higher stats and Defog.

A- -> B+ :mareanie:Mareanie ; Not so easy to build with, Mareanie tends to lean into some really weird structures due to it being so passive against Roselia, it's not bad but it does fit weirdly into teams and will likely have a bad MUs vs Roselia teams which is not a good thing in this tier.

B+ -> B :hakamo-o:Hakamo-o ; Overshadowed by Fraxure as a Dragon-type and by Gurdurr as a Fighting-type. The combination of both types is still interesting as well as Bulletproof being immuned to Roselia, but overall Hakamo-o is still pretty weak offensively and will need support to work

B -> B- :charjabug:Charjabug ; HO struggles to find a spot in this metagame rn, Sticky Web especially is not the most popular due to Hattrem being pretty common, still a decent option tho.

B -> B- :combusken:Combusken ; Offensively it is pretty weak as a setup, what makes it deserving of B ranks in the first place is the SubToxic set with Leftovers, being able to pull off some insane MUs sometimes, but when it does not it's probably gonna be a deadweight due to its lack of bulk and power.

B -> B- :rufflet:Rufflet ; Rufflet struggles against teams with Ebuzz & Pilo and these are mons that are omnipresent in the metagame rn, Rufflet still holds its niche as the most powerful Brave Bird user or with its Sub Bulk Up set but it really doesn't appreciate Pilo/Ebuzz and lacks of utility or support to provide to the team, making it B- now for me.

B -> C+ :marshtomp:Marshtomp ; Heavily outclassed by both Gabite & Palpitoad; the first one being able to safely check Lampent and the latter having access to Water Absorb and checking Wartortle. Marshtomp does have a niche as a physical wall tho because it has a better physical bulk than both to check stuff like Piloswine/Raboot but overall you'll likely use another Water-type for this such as Wartortle, Staryu or Slowpoke anyway.

B- -> C+ :zweilous:Zweilous ; Too slow, misses a lot, Fraxure is a better Dragon-type, and Zweilous doesn't come that easily on the field.

B- -> C :mienfoo:Mienfoo ; Struggles to fit anywhere really, it's outclassed by Slowpoke as a Pilo check that can pivot imo but Mienfoo has some decent options like Taunt & Knock Off over Slowpoke to make it a viable option. Outclassed by other Fighting-types offensively.

C+ -> C :abra:Abra ; Kinda just outclassed by Gastly, it comes on pretty much nothing and isn't that powerful. Life Orb set will struggle to be alive more than one turn and Focus Sash will lack power. There are also a lot of priority that just OHKOes it anyway so it's tough for Abra to shine here.

C+ -> C :Swirlix:Swirlix ; Needs Thwackey to work, only good in HO, not that good of a breaker either imo due to the lack of Nasty Plot but it's still a decent option.

C- -> UR :munchlax:Munchlax ; Too weak, bad typing, no coverage, nothing, this is just bad, there are plenty of other bulky setups mons that can sweep late game (Clefairy, Corsola-G, Duosion, Rufflet, Gurdurr...), no reason to use Munchlax really.

C- -> UR :omanyte:Omanyte ; Other suicide leads are better, even Dwebble outclasses it as a Shell Smash suicide lead lol which is already pretty niche in itself. Omanyte only has access to TSpikes to make it unique but TSpikes isn't great with Roselia being pretty common that i can't even see it being ranked at all tbh, if u want a TSpikes lead i guess just lead Roselia lol.

SM nominations

:marshtomp: A -> A+: idk how many of the SM playerbase will agree with rising Marshtomp but I believe wholeheartedly that Marshtomp and Gabite are as consistent as each other and Marshtomp is a pokemon that has to be respected in the teambuilder. It basically forces Magmar to run HP Grass and also Ebuzz to an extent (Ice Punch can be run to allow ebuzz to hp grass). It's also much bulkier than Gabite on both sides of defence and is just a consistent all-around wall that's splashable to have on teams. One of the best physical and special walls we have available to us right now.

:staravia: A- -> A: Staravia is also another mon that has proven itself in recent times. It's always been a consistent pick since the old days but its defensive attributes have been put to good use, being able to check threatening fighting types like Machoke and Combusken while also offering a pivotal ground immunity to defend teammates like Ebuzz, Magmar and Pawniard from mons like Gabite. It's also a bird so it's one of the best responses to Roselia teams, offering teams Defog to make sure they are not overwhelmed by hazard stack. It's the best removal in the tier and I don't think A- is reflective of that if you take what I've said about it into account.

:ferroseed: B+ -> A-: No clue why Ferroseed is lavishing down in B+ but hazard stack is good, and Ferroseed has its pros that Roselia doesn't have. Superior physical bulk, superior defensive typing and access to Stealth Rock allows Ferroseed to fill out a unique role in this metagame. Its psychic resistance is also key vs Kadabra and being the only grass type that can keep Frogadier in check is something that has to be acknowledged. There isn't much drawback to using Ferroseed, its offensive checks can easily be accounted for in the teambuilder and it's almost on the same level as Roselia. A- is a good start but idk if I can say it's A though that could change at any time.
:haunter: A -> A-: I think Haunter is teetering onto B+ lines but I'll appease people by just saying that it's A-. Did Haunter do anything this PL? I have to say I combed through every SM replay and I found that Haunter came 4 times (1 mirror) and in 3/4 of those games, it did absolutely nothing. The one game it did win, was versus a Trick Room team where it was using Taunt. I'd soon say any fast taunter could've done what it did there. I also have to note, every other game that did include a ghost type, it was always a Misdreavus. You know why Misdreavus is used more than Haunter? You have actual bulk + Nasty Plot.
1756733363923.png
Try and convince anyone this is a A level mon xD

The bottom line is, Haunter is not good. It's a very high risk, low reward mon in a metagame run by Grimer-A and Pawniard, it has no serviceable bulk to speak of even with Eviolite and it doesn't break anything all too well either. If Haunter doesn't kill anything, it will just die on the spot most of the time or be severely chipped. I tell you solemnly, I considered Haunter at some point in this tour and the only set I thought would actually contribute to a game is like dual STAB + wisp + dbond or drop Wisp and fit a Hidden Power or Energy Ball or smth. At least with Destiny Bond, you can trade 1 for 1 with the dark type or pretty much any mon slower than you that can kill you (which is most). It's been a very, very long time since Haunter had a good time in this format. Honestly, B+ is very fitting.

:tangela: A- -> B+: Basically swapping Tangela and Ferroseed's positions and I've already gone on a tirade about Tangela in the Post-PL thread but I'll just repeat myself a little bit here. Tangela is a flawed defensive piece in this tier that doesn't actually check anything all too well and doesn't offer anything unique that would warrant its usage other than Knock Off, which Servine has already and also Ferroseed. Its spdef is abysmal and you can argue "Roselia has poor physical def" but if you invest in Rose's physdef, it's serviceable enough and its spdef is not far behind even without investment and it possesses key resistances to fighting plus offering everything that Roselia has in the first place so Tangela is just kind of out of depth in the current metagame (bro is getting 2hkod by Ebuzz Focus Blast after rocks with eviolite)

SS noms as well, considering Panda posted his own.
S- may or may not happen, but I'd like to add it as it fits in the criteria.
Didn't mention all of the rises or drops since I don't feel motivated to write about them nowadays.
:Electabuzz: A+ -> S-
Even if I believe Ebuzz is overvalued by most people, I'd like to have it in S- as its optimization against Rose/Piloswine/Cors-G, Clef, or Duosion has been showing. Especially testing Roselia's bulk and using its offensive core to overwhelm every set. I don't think I'll ever have it S rank due to heavy support to make its wincon effective, but overall, it feels better than the mons in A+.

:Corsola-Galar: A+ -> S-

Meta optimization has given Cors-G more opportunity to go offense, especially CM, which had a dominating performance in the playoffs. Definitely a better mon in A+ due to bulk + wincon threat makes it a deadly threat in every position. While it's hard(not impossible) to see it rise up in S, I do believe there are still more optimizations for teams and different sets that can make it more deadly.

:Thwackey: A+ -> S-
Probably a hot take, but I value its presence as it has a way bigger impact than most A+ mons and Ebuzz itself, as you can use it at any point. There is also that Vullaby drops U-turns as the meta goes on, which makes Raboot have less of a presence, Tangela and Koffing getting less common, and IMO the optimization against Roselia buffs Thwackey indirectly. I'd argue that Thwackey has a slight case of being the better grass because of how it progresses. I'll say that getting to S rank is very slim, as there are numerous checks and Thwackey doesn't have that sweeping wincon compared to mons above it, but I think it's comparable to the Ebuzz and Cors-g as the meta develops.

:Hattrem: A -> A+ (?)
Hattrem always feels awkward building around when I wanna build with Offense, but it has shown that it gives breath in numerous playstyles that aren't so common and gives them a viable use in tier. Specifically for defensive/slow-paced teams, though it's excellent for offense. The rise of Cors-G, SpDef set has some usage vs Roselia and Electabuzz. While I can see it drop to A again, as it's very meta-dependent, it can fall back hard. However, I also think Hattrem has more optimization potential in the future. Either way, I think it's not unreasonable to put in an A+ due to the unique traits of how the meta is heading.

:Slowpoke: B -> B+
One of the few mons that can create momentum vs Piloswine, and with the recent success it has had with pivot-structured teams, I think it deserves a rise in the ranking.

:Gastly: B- -> B+
Pandadoux explained this well for me, nuff said.

:Palpitoad: C+ -> B-
Kind of a Physical hard check, Electabuzz counter, and one of the only ground types that wins over to SS Wart due to Water Absorb. Not much else beyond that, and I wouldn't rank it higher, as most people use it on defensive teams, while unexplored is notoriously bad in SS NFE.

:Staryu: C+ -> B
Doesn't necessarily agree that it outclasses defensive wartortle since Stoss chip helps more than you'd realize, but I do agree that it deserves a rise in the tier. Actual recovery with numerous utilities in its arsenal, it can use them against the opponent. B+ could be maybe in the future, but the bulk and somewhat its 4mss does hesitate me to put it higher.
:Clefairy: A -> A-
Extremely vulnerable bulk, being too reliant on Eviolite to tank hits, and just having this 4mss dilemma make it difficult to use nowadays. As a mixed wall, it faces high competition from Corsola-Galar, which is why most Roselia+Piloswine+Clefairy could replace Clef with Corsola-Galar lol. Clefairy can be the best support mon, or the most underwhelming one; no in between. And now the meta is simultaneously powerful, while having a strong response against Clefairy's utility tools. Clefairy peaked in Golbat, and I don't see it deserving the A rank spot.

:Duosion:
A- -> B+
Lowered down to similar reasons like Clefairy, but it also suffers from being more one-dimensional, and its fsight set doesn't have many favourable interactions vs mons like Piloswine + Vullaby, or any Hattrem cores. Regenerator gets too worn out by hazards + opponent attacking, while Magic Guard not having recovery does suck. I'll say it can be optimized in the future, such as running Physdef FSight or something close to the set. So despite the lowered rank, there's still much to develop with it :)

:Hakamo-o: B+ -> B-
The benefits it has aren't relevant right now, and there are so many ways to stop it from ever creating any progress. At best, you can cheese Regenerator teams, but that archetype is practically niche nowadays, and it just doesn't have much else going for it in the current meta.

:Koffing: B+ -> B
Koffing suffers from being awkwardly fit in the current days. Even teams w/o poison mon can overcome over Koffing teams by the sole fact that those teams tend to have holes in the bulk and power department. Its wincon has still to be respected among the best, but it's not forcing the tier in a way that's it's mandatory because of this mon alone.

:Marshtomp: B -> C+
...Do I really need to say anything about this Pokémon, with Paliptoad and Gabite being a much better rest talk, and the fact that it can't even break Hattrem is depressing. If it had flip turn, it would rise into A- highkey, but nowadays, if you're using Marshtomp, you're essentially playing in hard mode.
