Metagross @ Air Balloon
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 248 HP / 48 Atk / 116 Def / 96 Spe
Impish Nature
- Iron Defense
- Body Press
- Heavy Slam
- Bullet Punch
According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way Metagross should be able to fly. And yet in 1v1, it often does with a single balloon. Thanks to Air Balloon's temporary Ground immunity, Metagross can lure in would-be checks like Ursaluna and Garchomp and then KO them with Iron Defense + Body Press. This IronPress combination also defeats many other slow, bulky Pokemon like Hisuian Goodra, Iron Hands, and most other Metagross. To round out the set, Metagross typically carries two Steel-type STAB moves to defeat most relevant Fairy-types, including Encore + Disable Iron Valiant and Alolan Ninetales. Heavy Slam gives Metagross better chances against Primarina and Bullet Punch can pick off weakened foes, such as Meowscarada once it has been chunked down by Body Press. With the sample EV spread, Metagross survives a Choice Band Knock Off from Meowscarada or a Choice Specs Focus Blast from Iron Valiant, while also outspeeding base 50 Speed Pokemon like Ursaluna and Iron Hands. If you want to try this set out for yourself, try pairing it with the likes of Primarina, Raging Bolt, Volcanion, Walking Wake, or Roaring Moon. These Pokemon appreciate Metagross's strong matchup against opposing Fairy-types and/or its ability to lure in common Ground-types.
