Hi all! I don't know about you, but I love crossword puzzles. I have for years but I kind of got out of the habit of doing them until a few months ago when I started doing the daily NYT mini-crossword. Now I'm slowly getting back into the habit of doing full-size crosswords and they're just as fun as I remember. But on my drive home today, I thought... why not try to construct one myself? And why not make it Smogon-themed? So, I present to you all, the first(?) official Smogon crossword! If this gets good reception, maybe I'll make more. But in the meantime, you can play at the link below.

This is really cool though I know no Pokemon terms or tour names lol
put me in the next crosshare please

very fun. clearly written by someone with a wide knowledge and thoughtfulness for the site. i finished with minimal outside help - i looked up one clue where i got the gist but didnt know the exact answer, but i could've brute forced if it came down to that, that one was a shortie. brute forced two others i think. someone who knows some the tour stuff i had to brute force or finagle will surely punk this time, but getting under the nearest 10 minute barrier was fun.

some funny mistakes i did:

6 across: thought it was a certain word ending in X for a long time. turns out that doesn't resolve the puzzle... shockingly... lol
36 across: tried IO first... lol...
49 across: not the version with p? heresy...

42 down: your answer to this as opposed to the alternative i thought at first reveals you as old...
45 down: read this as "NFE's opposite" for the longest time. definitely my costliest error lol

might tempt me to make my own, honestly. we'll see!

I liked it. I was looking stuff up and had to Check like 4 word/cross sections.

I don't know if this is intended but you can hover over some of the clues like 14 and 55 and they reference other clues by pointing out which ones have the same word.

Haven't tried doing any crossword puzzle in a long while and this one was fun, nice balance of tour/battle/community trivia there.
I needed about 22 mins to finish it ; I don't have the exact count because for some reason I chose to log on with my Google account *after pausing 11 mins in*, so it reset both my progress and my timer (tl;dr no thoughts head empty).

Some words that gave me a bit of a hard time :
- 38 across (Paper), I had __per and couldn't come up with a word that wasn't Super or Hyper :wo: ;
- 43 across (LN), didn't know about the horsin' around meme, was fun to learn about it lol ;
- 25 down (Stealth Rock), despite having ro_k already guessed, I suppose I casually forgot about the existence of rocks, let alone SR for a good 20 mins :tymp:
- 40 down (Earache), because I was trying to think of words that fit the mold of the letters I'd already found, instead of focusing on the hint and going from there

Thanks for playing and for the feedback!

pretty cool. a lot of the jokes were funny. i liked the site owner / site owner thing. most crosswords are symmetrical and have only words with > 3 letters though
who calls it "cmind"
Oh yeah I’m well aware I just do not have the skill at setting crosswords yet to be able to make one symmetrical or with only 3+ letter clues lol. This was a fun first attempt made in one evening, but if I do more I’ll definitely try to stick to “the rules” more.

I made a Pokemon-themed cryptic crossword! If you don't know what that is, I encourage you to try it! But also, read the hidebox at the end of this post or God help you you will have no clue what the fuck is going on.

https://crosshare.org/crosswords/6cJcCeSn2y9YEugpRBmc/childrens-cryptoparazoology

As everyone else in this thread has discovered, trying to make an entire crossword grid of on-theme clues is basically impossible. I chose to make a cryptic because a) they're fun and b) the conventions around grid layouts are considerably relaxed. Per tradition a cryptic should still have 50% of letters in every word crossed with another word, and I decided to stick to that, even though it means some slightly questionable "Pokemon-themed" words snuck in. In the end there's only one word that I would consider dodgy, and I tried my absolute hardest to make sure that all the clues are reasonable. I am very proud of myself for getting multiple &lit clues in there.

Cryptic crosswords are a form of crossword where the clues given involve a specific form of wordplay. Specifically, every cryptic clue contains two components: a definition, which could serve as a normal (if potentially vague) crossword clue, and some form of wordplay, which clues to the same word in a completely different way. These are joined together without any indication of where one starts and the other ends, potentially with irrelevant or misleading punctuation to make it read more like a sentence. There are many types of wordplay clues, but to give you a sense of what to expect, you will commonly see anagrams, acronyms, and homophones used to clue to a word, possibly in conjunction with one another.

The best way to understand this is with some examples. Here are a few clues that I couldn't fit into the grid:

"Floating robot and I fly back" (6)
Here "floating robot" is the definition. There are multiple Pokemon that can fit this definition (again, they can be a bit vague!), but in addition to the crossed words, the second half of the clue gives us a way to check which one it is. "And" connects the two halves of the clue. There won't always be a word connecting the two parts, but sometimes you'll see something like "A and B," "A is B," "A's B," or "A gives B." Any word or phrase that suggests "these two things mean the same thing" is fair game. The other half of the clue is "I fly back." Here we have a wordplay that comes in two parts: "I" is a synonym for "Me," "fly" is a synonym for "gnat," and "back" indicates that the fly should be backwards. Put together, we get ME + GNAT backwards, or METANG.

"Wet morning in Diamond and Pearl" (4)
Again we have the definition first. This is not always the case! Sometimes the definition will be the second half. Here, the definition is just "Wet." There's no word to segue the two halves here; all of "Morning in Diamond and Pearl" is the second part. Another word for morning is AM (if you live in a country with the twelve-hour clock, anyway). Diamond and Pearl, for short, is DP. The clue says "Morning IN Diamond and Pearl," so we put AM inside of DP to get DAMP, the name of an ability.

These are just two examples; there are many types of cryptic clue. I would highly recommend reading this introductory guide, perhaps the Wikipedia page, and maybe try a much shorter puzzle intended for beginners. I tried my best to make a lot of the clues in the Pokemon puzzle beginner-friendly, so don't be discouraged! Like with any crossword, once you get a foothold with a few clues, it's much easier to make progress on the harder ones.

I love crosswords (obviously) but am sooooo bad at cryptic ones. This is a really cool idea! Your sample clues that didn’t make it in really stumped me so I don’t think I have a prayer at this but will give it a go!

Blizihguh I'm one hour in and here's what I have so far. Pretty confident on all of these and I don't want to reveal letters/clues yet... you've got some real stumpers in here though I gotta say. Having a ton of fun with this!

crossword 1 hour.PNG

EDIT:
2 hours in and I've made a lot of progress! I'm def getting more and more stumped now and I'm kind of grasping at straws for some of these clues. Not giving up yet, but taking a little break for now.

crossword 2 hours.PNG

EDIT2:
At 2.5 hours, I got hella stuck and decided to do a check... had some stuff wrong so with that in mind here's where I'm going from:

I'm glad to see it's caught your attention :) If you want a hint that's a little more vague than what crosshare gives you, I counted the number of misses. Once you have the word, you should be able to spot the definition in the clue, and then figuring out the wordplay to double-check is significantly easier.

I think there are seven things wrong here. Saying that it sounds like a lot, but honestly I think there's just like one or two words that are causing everything touching them to be a mess. Most of the grid is filled out correctly! I really wasn't kidding when I said there was only one word in the puzzle I thought was questionable, and you got that one fine. Bulbapedia redirects ASOR to the ORAS page, that totally counts as a thing people say right??
"OKIRLIAXEL" and "PLASMAAA" are causing a lot of issues here.

Finished! Blizihguh this was super fun! I feel like my rather lacking cryptic skills were tested and actually improved throughout the puzzle lol, since this was my first time I ever solved a cryptic to completion. There were plenty of clues that took me a while to break through on, but once I did I thought "this guy is a genius" haha. As mentioned in the edit that happened shortly after you post, I did a "check" and found the major errors that I made and was able to correct and get a fair amount from there. At around the 2:45 mark is where I started to lose steam and just kind of plug and chug letters at the last few clues that I felt like I had no hope of getting. But yes, this was awesome!

Here's the solve for those who want spoilers:
crossword solve.PNG

General thought process of how I solved coming in my next post in the thread. But highly recommend the puzzle to anyone who wants a challenge!

Clue-by-clue thought process (and general order) behind my solve:

8 Across
Spooner's magic word

This was the first clue I looked at, and the first clue I solved. I thought we were starting off easy, but boy did I end up being wrong haha. Anyway, I used to nickname all my Alakazams in my RBY games "Spoonerism" so this combined with "Alakazam" being a general magic word made this one pretty easy for me.

2 Down
One of the twins is a bottomless Latin American

Bottomless Latin American... drop the n and you get "Lati," as in the twins Latios and Latias. Again, felt like we're starting off easy so I was feeling good.

3 Down
Worthless weather starting in Hoenn... and in Leningrad!

Four letters, second one is A, meaning this could be Sand, Rain, or Hail... but we all know "Hail" is actually the worthless one out of the three (I just thought about it, didn't exist before Hoenn too, good clue). The Leningrad part made me laugh. At this point I was feeling cocky because I got three clues really quick. After that... we ran into a bit more trouble.

14 Down
Gliscor gets tricked by mixed fruit!

I searched around a bit before finding this clue, which I think is really clever. Gliscor almost always carries a Toxic Orb, so if you were to use Trick on it and give it a poison curing berry ("Pecha"), that would be quite the trick indeed! This boosted my confidence back a little bit after not finding an answer for a bit. Maybe a bit too much because then we get to...

14 Across
Irregular religious group fears fire

I knew from the previous clue that this one started with a P. When I saw "religious group" I thought that it might be referring to one of the evil teams from the games, specifically Team Plasma since they seem to worship N in a sense. Plasma by itself doesn't fit though, so I went with "Plasmaaa" because I thought "aaa" represented a scream, "fearing fire." This is probably wrong scientifically, but I think fire is technically a plasma since it's not really a solid, liquid, or gas? Lots of things working against me here lol. We'll come back to this one.

15 Down
At first, radishes, oranges, or tulips make for a big plant

I didn't know this one, but because I had the first letter of this one as A from "Plasmaaa," I took the "at first" literally, and slotted in a T in the second letter position, another mistake, this one much less costly however.

44 Across
"Periwinkle pinniped," said Francis's follower

After this I turned my attention to the bottom right, where I got a few in quick succession, boosting my confidence once again. This started with 44 Across, which I got fairly quickly because "Francis's follower" seemed like an obvious reference to Pope Leo. "Popplio" quickly followed. Periwinkle is a shade of blue (Popplio is blue), and while I don't know what pinniped means, I was still pretty confident in this one.

39 Down
A champion's Christmas carol is coming up

Next I knew I needed a four letter champion. Luckily I've played Gen 8 and remembered "Leon!" (knew it couldn't be Gary because of the O placement from Popplio). With the Christmas carol "coming up" being Noel, this was another solid one that I thought was very clever too.

37 Across
Powerful rodent gets sick after March

At first I took "after March" to mean that "April" would be contained within the clue, especially because I knew it ended in an L from "Leon." After a bit of thinking of rodent Pokemon though, "(Mar)(ill)" came to mind, and I got this one too.

32 Down
Ghost-fighting ability is the number two thing in recon

I had the A from "Marill" and the P from "Popplio," which made this one pretty easy. I think even if I didn't have those letters I would've been able to get "Scrappy" just from "Ghost-fighting ability" without even knowing what "the number two thing in recon" part of the clue means (I still don't lol).

33 Down
Rain, snow, and hail heal him; shirtless sleet is surprising

I figured this was a Pokemon that had both the abilities Ice Body and Rain Dish... couldn't think of one that has both but I still got this one because "shirtless sleet" meant removing the T from the word, and "surprising" is an anagram tell. With the last letter being L, this had to be Seel (which def gets Ice Body, idk about Rain Dish but I haven't looked it up).

30 Down
Cut-off old flyer to make music with Smith

Looked around for awhile again after the last clues, which I had solved in quick succession. Came across this one, which I really wanted to put "Will" for (in reference to Will Smith), but thought better of it thankfully. "Old" made me think of fossil Pokemon, and the "flyer" part could have made it "Aero"dactyl or "Arch"eops, but thankfully my knowledge of Aerosmith led me in the right direction.

28 Across
Durham, PA's odds and ends can go berserk

At first, I thought this clue was in reference to the Gen 2 item Berserk Gene. Then I took a look at "Durham, PA" and its odd letters and ending letters, which I realized spelled out Drampa, which has the Berserk ability. I liked this clue.

5 Down
Joint goddess of the night in disarray: she had a controversial makeover

Another mistake here. I know the goddess of the night as Nyx... I figured the "makeover" had to be changing to the spelling to Nix to make "Onix" fit. This one I'm ashamed of as the Jynx guy lol, but I found out later when I did the check at the 2:30-ish mark.

11 Across
Fancy pixellater unleashes a flurry of kicks

The other very costly mistake lol. When I saw "pixellater" I assumed a Pokemon that has the ability Pixellate. The only one that came to mind was Gardevoir, so I figured Kirlia probably had the ability too. At this point, I only had the letters I from "Lati" and L from "Hail," which were in the correct positions to make "Kirlia" fit in the middle of the clue. Which I thought was okay because I took "unleashes" to mean that Kirlia is unleashing additional letters from either end of it lol. The "flurry of kicks" made me think of Triple Axel funnily enough, with the A from "Kirlia" leading into the A of Axel. At this point I had one letter out in front of Kirlia... I went with O as in "Okur," the slang word for okay said by rappers such as Cardi B. I thought that "Okir" was a clever misspelling of that, representing the "fancy" part of the clue. Lots of leaps here to get to "Okirliaxel" which really threw me off the scent lmao. But I hope you see the logic now anyway haha.

Okay that was the logic behind the first screenshot that I posted, so the first hour of the solve. More to come probably tomorrow when I'm not tired lol because this post is taking awhile. But yeah the above at least explains where I went horribly wrong with two of those clues Blizihguh. Be on the lookout for the rest of the solve logic later

I'm delighted to see you solved it Phoopes, and glad to hear you thought so many of the clues were clever! This puzzle is kind of a niche in a niche so I was worried it would end up being for nobody, haha. Hearing your logic is fun too, I was definitely curious about the logic behind PLASMAAA.

Now that the answers are out there I'll post the clue breakdown. Still interested to hear how you approached the rest of it!
8. Spooner's magic word (ALAKAZAM) -- Double Definition
Starting strong with one of my favorite clues in the puzzle. "Spooner's" is used in cryptics to clue to a Spoonerism, but here it's just a word for "guy who has lots of spoons." Alakazam is, of course, a magic word.

9. Dodgy alley TV has a menacing aura (YVELTAL) -- Anagram
"Dodgy" is the anagram indicator here; scrambling alley TV gives us Yveltal, which has Dark Aura. Yveltal really does feel like one of those weird words that only shows up in crosswords. I really needed either JYNX or ONIX for 5 Down, so I totally lucked out that there's a Pokemon with a seven-letter name starting with Y.

11. Fancy pixellater unleashes a flurry of kicks (TRIPLE AXEL) -- Anagram
"Fancy" tells us to rearrange pixellater; Triple Axel is a move that kicks three times. I wish it could have been the more common spelling of pixelate, but it still works.

12. Weird spandex, with ecstasy instead of an accelerator (X SPEED) -- Abbreviation, Anagram, Substitution
"With ecstasy instead of an" tells us to replace the an in spandex with "E." From there, "weird" tells us to rearrange it into something that matches "accelerator." Normally cryptic crosswords give you the word lengths (so this would end with "(1 5)," but I thought that combined with the fact that everything is Pokemon-related would trivialize clues like this.

14. Irregular religious group fears fire (PARASECT) -- Charades
Para- means a lot of things, but usually indicates that something is irregular. A religious group is a sect. Put them together, we get a Pokemon that crumples into a fine dust as soon as it touches a fire move.

17. Childish pony heard a sniper (HORSEA) -- Homophone
"Childish pony" is a horsey -- heard, it sounds like Horsea, a Pokemon with Sniper.

20. Bug that lady and this clue, for example (HERACROSS) -- Charades
That lady is HER, and this clue is ACROSS. Heracross is, of course, a bug. Knowing that it has to be a bug Pokemon with a nine-letter name is probably enough that this is technically solvable from the definition, but the wordplay shouldn't be too tough either.

22. Afraid of bottles and bugs, honey bear is sent back to an alternate universe (HOOPA-U) -- Charades, Reversal
For the definition, Hoopa-Unbound is sealed in a Prison Bottle, and 4x weak to bug moves. A honey bear (POOH) sent back is HOOP, combined with an Alternate Universe (AU) to get HOOPAU.

24. Restlessness is no simian scramble (INSOMNIA) -- Anagram
Restlessness is the definition; "no simian" scrambled is "INSOMNIA."

26. Go back in time, dark dog (HOUNDOUR) -- Insertion
To go back is to UNDO, stuck in the middle of HOUR ("in time"). Houndour is, of course, a dark dog. I like to use the exclamation points to indicate &Lit clues, but this one really feels like it should end with one. Go back in time, dark dog!

28. Durham, PA's odds and ends can go berserk (DRAMPA) -- Extraction
As soon as I thought of "odds and ends" I bent over backwards trying to make it work somewhere. We take the odd letters and ending letters from Durham (DRAM) and PA (...PA) to get a Pokemon with the ability Berserk.

31. Swiss with crazy parakeet causes confusion (SWEET KISS) -- Anagram, Insertion
A parakeet is a keet, for short; rearranging it ("crazy") gets us EETK, which we put in SWISS to get SWEETKISS, which causes confusion. I went back and forth several times on this one; looking at it again I would probably make this "headless wild parakeet" or "crazy headless parakeet" just to indicate that it's only the back half. I'm not sure whether this counts as an indirect anagram -- I mean, keet is in there -- but better to err on the safe side.

34. A special voice: Coheed and Cambria's fresh start (ECHOED) -- Anagram, Deletion
I love music, and inevitably this puzzle ended up with a "band name" subtheme. Coheed and Cambria's start (COHEED), made "fresh" (scrambled) is ECHOED, giving us "Echoed Voice," a special move.

35. Charizard, Combusken, and Altaria put their heads together to make a powerful Fire Blast (CHARCOAL) -- Extraction
The "heads" (starting letters) of Charizard, Combusken, and Altaria give us CHAR, CO, AL, which make(s) a powerful Fire Blast. "To make a powerful Fire Blast" is kind of a sus clue for Charcoal. I couldn't think of a good way to make the tense work at the time, but maybe "Charizard, Combusken, and Altaria put their heads together. Makes a powerful fire blast!" would have been better if I weren't using the exclamation points for something else.

37. Powerful rodent gets sick after March (MARILL) -- Charades
Sick (ILL) after March (MAR) gives us MARILL, a rodent with Huge Power.

40. Hetero Zoro randomly transforms into a caped crusader (ZERO TO HERO) -- Anagram
Hetero Zoro, put randomly (rearranged), gives us ZERO TO HERO, an ability that transforms you into a superhero. I was really pleased with this one.

44. "Periwinkle pinniped," said Francis's follower (POPPLIO) -- Homophone
Popplio is a periwinkle seal ("pinniped"), and the successor to Pope Francis is of course Pope Leo, which sounds the same.

45. Mythical equipment in a pool of magic (MAGEARNA) -- Insertion
A pool of magic would be MANA, and equipment is GEAR. Put one inside the other to get a Mythical pokemon, MAGEARNA.
1. A thin plank with a muddled middle makes a curious cure (SALT) -- Anagram
A thin plank is a SLAT; we can rearrange (muddle) the middle two letters to get SALT, which goes with cure to make Salt Cure. I understand why it's called that, but it's still curious that the "cure" move just hurts you.

2. One of the twins is a bottomless Latin American (LATI) -- Deletion
A Latin American is a Latino (or Latina (or Latinx, although all my LATAM friends hate that word)). Whatever it is, if you drop the bottom letters you get LATI. One of the Lati@s twins is a singular Lati. I really wanted to make something with "Lati@s/Latin@s," but I liked this clue anyway.

3. Worthless weather starting in Hoenn... and in Leningrad! -- &Lit, Acrostic
The first &Lit clue of the puzzle! Hail is a crummy weather; in Pokemon you'd first find it in Hoenn, but in real life it might be found in Russia. For the extraction part, the starting letters in "Hoenn and in Leningrad" give us HAIL.

4. EA Kart characters might be found in the Fighting Dojo (KARATE) -- Anagram
Not for the only time in this puzzle, I wish I could just use the Japanese name for a trainer class (Black Belts, in Japanese, are just called "Karate"). Karate might be found in the Fighting Dojo, of course, whether or not it's the name of the guys there. EA Kart characters rearrange to make KARATE.

5. Joint goddess of the night in disarray: she had a controversial makeover (JYNX) -- Anagram, Charades
A joint is a J (for some reason I don't think this is a "standard" cryptic abbreviation); as Phoopes noted Nyx is the goddess of night, so putting her in disarray gives us YNX, with a leading J for JYNX. Jynx, of course, had probably the most notorious redesign in Pokemon history.

6. Heartless Kanye vinyl given out by Skrelp (KELP) -- Abbreviation, Charades, Deletion
A "heartless" Kanye would be KE (Kanye without the middle letters). Add onto that a vinyl record (LP) and get KELP, which is dropped by Skrelp in Gen 9. I've never played ScarVi, and the TM material items are basically impossible to find information about if you don't know where to look, so I'm lucky I was able to find this.

7. A young adult is in sight for a feminine fruit (STEENEE) -- Insertion
Put TEEN (a young adult) into SEE ("in sight") to get a feminine fruit (STEENEE).

10. Steer, out East and astray: get some sleep (REST) -- Anagram, Abbreviation, Deletion
Steer without one of the Es ("out East") is Ster; astray tells us to rearrange it and get "some sleep" (ie, REST).

13. Backwards bogeyman beheaded baby bug (Snom) -- Deletion, Reversal
A bogeyman is a MONSTER; cut the head off to get MONS, and flip it backwards to get SNOM, a baby bug. I'm a sucker for the alliteration clues.

14. Gliscor gets tricked by mixed fruit! (PECHA) -- &Lit, (Indirect) Anagram
Peach is a fruit; mixed (rearranged) gives us PECHA. Gliscor sometimes gets lured by mons with Pecha Berry and Trick, which gives us the definition. This is an indirect anagram, and I worried about including it; but I felt the limited number of five-letter berries, and the on-the-nose &Lit definition made it pretty gettable. I was really excited when I came up with this clue, ngl.

15. At first, radishes, oranges, or tulips make for a big plant (ROOT) -- Acrostic
A "Big" plant would be the humble Big Root; taking the first letters of "radishes, oranges, or tulips" gets us there.

16. Gutted saltwater fish can help with focus (SASH) -- Deletion
A Focus Sash can help Pokemon with focus; taking "saltwater fish" and gutting it (removing the middle letters) gives us SASH as well.

18. Posh roommate conceals a baby dinosaur without its tail (SHROOM) -- Extraction
For the definition, a baby dinosaur (SHROOMISH) without its tail (SHROOM) -- this technically contains some wordplay, but "Shroom" isn't a Pokemon so cut me some slack. "Posh roommate" conceals (has the hidden word) "shroom" in the middle of it.

19. Fearmonger blended Oran (ARON) -- Anagram
Oran, blended (rearranged) is ARON, a pokemon known for its FEAR strategy (ie, a FEARmonger)

21. Tiny bird's wild tuna (NATU) -- Anagram
Natu is the Tiny Bird Pokemon, which is also "tuna" rearranged

23. Isopod dishonorably hides a little weed (ODDISH) -- Extraction
Another "hidden word" clue: "Isopod dishonorably" has "oddish" in the middle. For the definition, Oddish is of course a little weed :)

25. A science class ends up crouched near mouse automaton! (NERD) -- &Lit, Acrostic
I am very proud of this one! Super Nerd is a "Science" class (a science-related trainer class -- in Japanese they are actually just named Science). Taking the ends of "Crouched near mouse automaton" (DREN) and putting them up (ie, in reverse) gives NERD. Put all together, "A science class ends up crouched near mouse automaton" is also a description of the Super Nerd's sprite in Heart Gold and Soul Silver!

26. Warm ends of eel lead to ancient king's final abode (HOTEL) -- Charades, Deletion
A synonym for warm (HOT) and the letters at either end of "eel" (EL) put together give HOTEL. Recently-released Pokemon Legends ZA features AZ, an ancient king, running a hotel, where Bulbapedia tells me he intends to live for the rest of his life.

27. User experience before Internet Explorer 4's model of acuity (UXIE) -- Abbreviation, Charades
User experience (UX for short) combined with Internet Explorer (IE) gives us UXIE. "4's model of acuity" is the definition: Uxie is the Gen 4 Pokemon that lives in (and embodies) the Lake of Acuity. I went through so many bad clues here before I landed on this, and I'm glad I ended up with something this good.

29. Initially acclaimed, someone overreacted regarding the primal games' unusual nickname (ASOR) -- Acrostic
The starting letters ("Initials") of "acclaimed, someone overreacted regarding" give ASOR. The "primal games" (games with the primal Pokemon -- Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire) are normally called ORAS, but once in a blue moon you see ASOR. It's certainly unusual! I'm not happy that I had to include this word, but I needed SOMETHING to cross there, and Bulbapedia has a redirect for it at least! "Unusual" could be wordplay suggesting to scramble ORAS, so I guess that's also an angle.

30. Cut-off old flyer to make music with Smith (AERO) -- Deletion...?
This is a weird one -- the definition here is "Cut-off old flyer" (Aerodactyl is an ancient Flying-type; cut off the end to get AERO). Aero, put next to Smith, gets us Aerosmith -- ie, it makes music. Now that I look at this, I think I originally had "makes music" instead of "to make music," and that was absolutely better.

32. Ghost-fighting ability is the number two thing in recon (SCRAPPY) -- Insertion
"Ghost-fighting ability" is a very on-the-nose definition for the ability Scrappy. "The number two thing" is CRAP, and if we put that in a synonym for "recon" (SPY) we get SCRAPPY.

33. Rain, snow, and hail heal him; shirtless sleet is surprising (SEEL) -- Anagram, Deletion
As Phoopes more or less identified, Seel is a Pokemon that gets both Ice Body and Hydration, which means it can be healed by Rain or Snow/Hail. Gotta include sleet for the USPS slogan, and here it gives us the wordplay: "Sleet" without a T (shirt) is SLEE, which we can rearrange ("surprising!") to get SEEL.

35. Short, clueless alien tells you the scale (CLEF) -- Double Definition
A clef, in music, tells you the scale of the staff it's on. Clefable is a clueless (Unaware) alien (they're from the moon!), nicknamed "Clef" for short.

36. Brock's mother in an exotic form (ALOLAN) -- Double Definition
Brock's mother, in the anime, is Lola; "Brock's mother in an" means we insert LOLA into AN to get ALOLAN. An Alolan Pokemon is an exotic form of a previous gen's Pokemon. I wish I had something better to get to Alolan here. I guess it doesn't really need to be a Pokemon thing. Maybe I should just put another musical artist in there or something.

38. For starters, I'd say leading Excadrill is key for Klara (ISLE) -- Acrostic
Taking just the first letters (starters), "I'd say leading Excadrill," gives us ISLE. Another word for an isle is a key, and Klara is found on the Isle of Armor, so an ISLE is a "key for Klara."

39. A champion's Christmas carol is coming up (LEON) -- Reversal
Leon is the Elite Four champion in Gen 8. Another word for a Christmas carol is a noel, and coming up tells us to put it in reverse.

41. Grow, heat, or coat starters above (OVER) -- Double Definition
Overgrow, Overheat, and Overcoat are all Pokemon words, and "Over" is the starter for all three of them. Likewise, "above" is a synonym for "over."

42. Chateau's noble class is real queer (Earl) -- Anagram
Our last trainer class clue -- the Battle Chateau features a trainer class named Earl (in addition to Barons, Viscounts, etc -- all titles of nobility). We can rearrange "REAL" to get "EARL," with "queer" as the anagram indicator.

43. Treetop alcoholic has an elderly boss (OPAL) -- Extraction
"Treetop alcoholic" has the hidden word "OPAL" in the middle; Opal is the name of an elderly Gym Leader in Gen 8.

Damn absolutely mogged by the largest ASHLEY. Well done!
Unfortunately when it comes to cryptic crosswords we cannot hope to defeat the British. It's one of the few places they continue to dominate after ceding all their other territories

(Seriously though idt I've ever completed a cryptic in less than 90 minutes, absolutely cracked performance)

Blizihguh

Here's the rest of my logic, before I look at yours for setting the puzzle.

26 Across
Go back in time, dark dog

This one was kind of similar to "Scrappy" in that I didn't really get half the clue, but still managed. "Go back in time" made me think something was going to be backwards, but it doesn't appear to be so. "Dark dog" led me to "Houndoom," which of course I later changed to "Houndour" upon solving the associated Down clue.

35 Across
Charizard, Combusken, and Altaria put their heads together to make a powerful Fire Blast

This is one that I kind of facepalmed for not getting earlier. With "heads" I thought it only meant the first letter of each, and I had thought of "Charcoal" earlier with what makes Fire-type moves more powerful. At a point I thought some combination of CCA had to be together, so I thought maybe Accelgor had something to do with it? I think this was an easier clue that I just overthought.

26 Down
Warm ends of eel lead to ancient king's final abode

This could potentially be my favorite clue of the whole puzzle. Once I got it I literally thought "this guy is a genius" lol. I had looked at it before and thought that the clue would start with "el," the "ends of eel" which would then "lead to" something like a tomb or a pyramid synonym. But that wouldn't incorporate the "warm" part of the clue at all. When I saw the clue started with an H and ended with L, I thought that "(Hot)(el)" worked, but wasn't sure about the ancient king... and then I remembered AZ. I haven't played Z-A yet but I know the general setup with AZ running the hotel and I was like "damn this guy is really good" haha.

29 Down
Initially acclaimed, someone overreacted regarding the primal games' unusual nickname

At this point, I had the started and ending letters of A and R, so I figured this was just a scramble of ORAS. Or more specifically, a transposition with putting Alpha Sapphire first. "Initially acclaimed" refers to it starting with an A, as in like an "A" grade? Not 100% sure.

31 Across
Swiss with crazy parakeet causes confusion

For this clue, I already had four of the letters, so I was able to get "Sweet Kiss" because of the "causes confusion" part of the clue. I get that the answer has "Swiss" split, with the letters of "keet" scrambled in the middle, but I'm not sure how to arrive at that fact without the other letters I had already filled in.

12 Across
Weird spandex, with ecstasy instead of an accelerator

After this, I ended up looking in the top left because I figured something that started with X should be an easier solve (even if I had Onix instead of Jynx lol). This one kind of accidentally came to me, because I was trying to think of Pokemon-related things that started with an X, and Xerneas didn't fit. I actually ended up changing it at one point from "X Speed" to "X Sp Def" because of the "instead of an accelerator" part of the clue (meaning I thought it wasn't speed-related), so I'm curious as to your logic. This was especially tricky because the only letters that don't line up with other clues are the only different letters between "X Speed" and "X Sp Def." Tricky, and props if that was intentional!

7 Down
A young adult is in sight for a feminine fruit

Admittedly I kind of cheated on this one lol. I knew that this was the pre-evolution of Tsareena and included the word "teen" in it because of the "young adult" part of the clue (which also works with pre-evolution, nice), but I couldn't for the life of me think of the name "Steenee" so I did look up the name. I'll still count it as a win for me though.

19 Down
Fearmonger blended Oran

After that, I think this was the first time I even noticed this clue. Tbh, I don't get the "Fearmonger" part, but "blended Oran" had to be "Aron" since it was still Pokemon-related.

17 Across
Childish pony heard a sniper

Another one that I got because I had multiple letters in the correct slot already. "Childish pony" made me think of Ponyta at first, but that would've been too on the nose. With the correct letters I already had though, "Horsea" (a seahorse pre-evolution for "pony") came pretty easy. Is "heard a sniper" in reference to the fact that it learns Octazooka?

18 Down
Posh roommate conceals a baby dinosaur without its tail

I had looked at this one for a long time before getting the S from Horsea, thinking it somehow was a reference to Tyrunt or Amaura. I got "Shroom" from "posh roommate conceals" but I don't know about the back half of the clue. Omg wait is Breloom a dinosaur?? And Shroomish is the baby dinosaur?? I actually never thought of that until this moment... I had no idea Breloom was based off a dinosaur lol. Well, fair play to you.

20 Across
Bug that lady and this clue, for example

I had three letters for this one including the starting letter, so Heracross came pretty easy, especially with a fairly straightforward clue.

24 Across
Restlessness is no simian scramble

With three letters in place, I actually got the synonym for "restlessness" as the ability "Insomnia" before I even realized that it was a "no simian" anagram. Either way, I still really like this clue.

15 Down
At first, radishes, oranges, or tulips make for a big plant

I was too far down the wrong rabbit hole with this one, starting with ATO, I just kind of threw an R on the end because I had no idea what I was doing. Maybe the OR coming from "oranges?" Shrug.

16 Down
Gutted saltwater fish can help with focus

This one I was more confident on. I had an M and an S (even though the M was wrong), so I thought this was "Miss," a play off of "focus." (Focus Blast/Focus Miss joke, since "energy" for Focus Energy wouldn't have fit).

38 Down
For starters, I'd say leading Excadrill is key for Klara

I had the I and the L in here, so when I saw "For starters, I'd" I took that literally and filled in a D in the second slot. "Idle" seemed to make sense to me, but clearly I found out later that it's "Isle" because of the first letters in "I'd say leading Excadrill is key." I still don't know what "for Klara" refers to though.

10 Down
Steer, out East and astray: get some sleep

Filled in "Tera" here because of the letters I already had, and some common letters with "steer," "East," and "astray." Ignored the "get some sleep" part of the clue. Common error of mine where I didn't think of the whole clue because I thought I didn't have to get it all the way for me to be right lol. Also I was so sure on "Plasmaaa" that it threw me off from thinking of "Rest."

42 Down
Chateau's noble class is real queer

Another one I sort of cheated on? I got the "real queer" part of the clue, and that "earl" is a royal title... but to be 100% safe I looked up the Battle Chateau ranks and saw it was a part of it. For a time, I thought this was related to the Old Chateau from DPP, but once I realized you probably meant Battle Chateau I saw the light lol.

Here's the next half hour... up until right after I did the check (so the third screenshot in my above post).

21 Down
Tiny bird's wild tuna

I should've gotten this one earlier, because "wild tuna" is obviously "Natu," but maybe I didn't get it because I was so fixated on "Houndoom" instead of "Houndour."

27 Down
User experience before Internet Explorer 4's model of acuity

Another one I probably should've gotten earlier. UX before IE should've been easier, especially with "acuity" thrown in there for Lake Acuity.

34 Across
A special voice: Coheed and Cambria's fresh start

With the E in place, I was able to pick up on "a special voice" referring to the move "Echoed" Voice, especially with the "Coheed" scramble. Though I still don't understand where "and Cambria's fresh start" comes from.

23 Down
Isopod dishonorably hides a little weed

When I got this one it was like a sigh of relief haha. I had been thinking something to do with Wimpod at first, and then a straight up anagram of "Isopod," but once I got the H at the end I figured it had to be "Oddish" because of letter placement/similarity. I still don't really understand the first half of the clue (I got "little weed" referring to Oddish), but I was sure that had to be it.

35 Down
Short, clueless alien tells you the scale

For the longest time, I thought that the alien was referring to Elgyem. But then I remembered I'm a genwunner and I was overthinking it lol. A "short, clueless alien" was referring to Clefairy, and the "scale" means a musical scale, not a weight scale. I like this clue.

36 Down
Brock's mother in an exotic form

Another one I cheated on. I could not remember Brock's mom's name for the life of me, but once I looked it up and saw it was Lola, "Alolan" was an obvious answer.

41 Down
Grow, heat, or coat starters above

Took me too long to get this one too. With the "starters" indicator, I was thinking I was going to have to use G, H, and C in my answer. It was only after a looooong time that I realized the "starters" could be "Over," as in Overgrow, overheat, or overcoat. Smh.

...

It was at this point where I did the check, and saw all my mistakes lol.

11 Across
Fancy pixellater unleashes a flurry of kicks

I figured at this point I had to just be overthinking it and it was just "Triple Axel" lol. I now get that "pixellater" is just an anagram for the answer but man... really overthought that one lmao.

And here's the last twenty or so minutes! (from the final screenshot til the end of the puzzle)
1 Down
A thin plank with a muddled middle makes a curious cure

After getting "Triple Axel," I had two of the letters correct. "Slat" became "Salt" with the "muddled middle," which then refers to Salt Cure. Good one.

4 Down
EA Kart characters might be found in the Fighting Dojo

Now that I didn't have an A in the last slot, this was easy for me to get as "Karate" from "EA Kart characters." It's funny, I had thought of "Karate" a long time ago but figured it didn't fit because I was so sure about "Plasmaaa." Where have we heard that before? lol

10 Down
Steer, out East and astray: get some sleep

Once I got the wrong letter out of the way, I finally took notice to "get some sleep." Had to be "Rest."

5 Down
Joint goddess of the night in disarray: she had a controversial makeover

As mentioned before, once I realized this was "Jynx" I was ashamed of myself lol.

9 Across
Dodgy alley TV has a menacing aura

Once I had the Y from "Jynx," I realized that I needed an "alley TV" anagram, which, since it's Pokemon-related, must be Yvelta. Doubly so because of "menacing aura" referring to its ability. Initially, since I had an N from "Onix" in the starting slot, I thought it was going to be "Night__" which I had in for awhile, but obviously didn't go anywhere.

40 Across
Hetero Zoro randomly transforms into a caped crusader

This is another one I overthought. I only realized much later than I should've that all I needed was a "Hetero Zoro" anagram, which with all the letters I had already slotted in had to be "Zero To Hero" like the Palafin ability. Initially, because of "caped crusader" and the "transforms" indicator, I really thought I was looking for something like "Zubatman," "Golbatman," "Crobatman," or even "Noibatman" lol. This makes much more sense obviously.

25 Down
A science class ends up crouched near mouse automaton!

Another one I should've gotten earlier. The "nerd" sprite is a classic one, but I was thinking I needed something like "bio," "chem," "orgo," etc. because of "science class" and "crouched" I thought meaning a shortening of a larger word.

15 Down
At first, radishes, oranges, or tulips make for a big plant

"At first," should have led me to "Root" much earlier than it did. Big Root. But alas, another casualty of being so sure of "Plasmaaa."

16 Down
Gutted saltwater fish can help with focus

I feel like I didn't get this one earlier because when I saw "gutted" I thought it was a remove the middle kind of clue, not chop off the end. This is assuming you're referring to sashimi here. "Focus" gives "sash" pretty well though, instead of band, because of the S from "Heracross."

14 Across
Irregular religious group fears fire

Here it is. We finally did it. No more "Plasmaaa" lol. The religious group is a "sect," and it "fears fire" because it's 4x weak to it. "Parasect." I feel like I could've solved this a lot faster with not as much help were it not for this major blunder lmao.

43 Down
Treetop alcoholic has an elderly boss

I don't understand this one all the way, but "elderly boss" clued me in on an old gym leader. "Opal" was a fairly memorable character for Sword and Shield (which I actually played), so I was able to figure it out.

6 Down
Heartless Kanye vinyl given out by Skrelp

THIS ONE. Ooooh boy did I have trouble with this one. Because I am a recovering Kanye addict, I racked my brain for so long on how this had anything to do with the album 808s and Heartbreaks. And I mean it sort of does, with the last two letters being LP. It took a long time though for me to get that "Heartless Kanye" referred to the letters KE. So all in all it was "Kelp," because it was "given out by Skrelp." This is something where my previous knowledge kind of hurt me actually lmao.

The last three I had absolutely no clue so I cheated on them. Sorry haha.

45 Across
Mythical equipment in a pool of magic

I get this one now that I cheated on it. "In a pool of magic" refers to a split "mana," with "equipment" referring to a "gear" in the middle. I don't think this is all the way obvious, but the use of "mythical" to refer to a mythical Pokemon makes "Magearna" gettable.

13 Down
Backwards bogeyman beheaded baby bug

Yeah I wasn't getting this one. I was too locked in on the "baby bug" because I misremembered Budew as a Grass/Bug type as oppposed to a Grass/Poison type. I don't think Snom is technically a Baby Pokemon, but maybe I was thinking about this too literally. Because of "Backwards" and the B alliteration I came kind of close with "Snob" as my guess. I thought this because "Snob" backward is "Bons," as in Bonsly, which I don't think is a Baby Pokemon? But it was beheaded because the top of the clue, not the top of the name, was cut off. Even though it's not a bug. Idk man, this one was tough.

22 Across
Afraid of bottles and bugs, honey bear is sent back to an alternate universe

I have no clue what is going on here with Hoopa-U lmao. I can see it with "alternate universe" and that it is "afraid of bugs" with being 4x weak to it, but I got nothing on the rest. I thought it was related to Teddiursa, Ursaring, or Ursaluna because of the "honey bear" bit. This is the last one I "got," but I just revealed the answer because I was so lost.

And that's it! Thanks again Blizihguh for the wonderful puzzle, this shit ruled.
