Preamble

IF YOU PLAY A LOT OF SHOWDOWN: PLEASE READ THIS!
VVVVVVVVVVVVVV

Hey there, tell me if you’ve been here before:

You play this game everyday going on hours long ladder queue sessions only to feel exhausted, frustrated, and empty. Yet you keep coming back the next day only to get that same exhausted feeling, claiming you play this game to have fun and relax.

That’s not having fun and relaxing, that’s gaming addiction and I’ve fallen victim to it myself. That was me grinding ladder for hours a day trying to hit rank 2 with Pokemon like :Probopass:, :garchomp:, banded :landorus-therian: etc. It practically drove me insane and I was very unhappy. It literally had me enslaved. After my :garchomp: I felt obligated to play simply to try and achieve some temporary status symbol and prestige which has long since faded away. Every waking hour my thoughts were dominated by hyper queuing ladder with new insane ideas (they didn’t work) which caused me to lose 100’s of hours of peace. At the dinner table? Queueing. In a car ride? Also queueing. In class? I did it in literally every class and it definitely affected my ability to take notes and made it much harder to do well.

If you feel like you NEED to play this game to be satisfied/entertained/relaxed to the point of necessity, an incessant feeling that doesn't go away throughout the whole day, (even if you don’t admit it this might still be the case) I just want to encourage you that there is another option.

I couldn’t beat my gaming addiction on my own, I was too weak. But since I really started getting serious about following Jesus my whole life changed. Suddenly all the anxiety and anger I got from tilt queueing ladder just faded away in his presence, because it no longer had any power over me. I really wanted to share this with everyone because If you give your life to him, I promise you won’t feel the need to tilt queue anymore or play showdown every waking hours of the day. He will help you build self control and give you a much more fulfilling life than you have now.

Jesus came to save us from our sins, to free us from any dark addictions in our lives. To give us direction, hope and a future. So If you are struggling with an addiction of any kind, I encourage you to read the gospels and find out for yourself who the real Jesus is (I’d start with matthew).

This rank 2 ladder session was different because after going through a period of growth in my life, God has given me the self-control I need to stop playing excessive amounts of video games and experience more of what life has to offer. So, if you think you’re stuck with nothing else to do but play video games. I just wanted to tell you that Jesus has so many good plans for your life, and you don’t even know it. If you give your life to Jesus today I promise you won’t regret it and you will enjoy a much more fulfilling life than the one you have right now. If you feel like this convicted you and want to talk to someone about this, feel free to message me on smogon or discord, I’ve been there before.

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways submit to him,
and he will make your paths straight.
7 Do not be wise in your own eyes;
fear the Lord and shun evil.
Proverbs 3:5-7 NIV

I pray that this message reached someone who needed to hear this. I hope you enjoy the rest of this rmt as well!

^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Keeping with the theme of redemption in the preamble, today we are going to be redeeming :Blissey: from the moniker of “stall only mon” in ou, I’m very excited to share this team because it has good matchups into most of the ou tier while having great surprise factor.

Proof Of Peak

The team

:sv/blissey:
Blissey @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Serene Grace
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 252 Def / 168 SpA / 88 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Trick
- Ice Beam
- Flamethrower
- Soft-Boiled

Choice scarf serene grace has largely been written off as a meme set. However, I’m making the case that this set is a lot stronger than you might initially expect. Trick choice scarf is very powerful on :blissey: because there are many dangerous setup sweepers that you can lock into a move. The given speed evs lets you outspeed and trick :raging-bolt: into calm mind. It also lets you outspeed and ohko :scizor: with flamethrower. Here are most of the notable Pokemon you can trick a choice scarf: :hydrapple: :raging-bolt: :iron-moth: :garganacl: :clefable: :slowking-galar: :corviknight: :gliscor: :blissey: :Kingambit: :weezing-galar: and many others. You also end up beating many anti stall Pokemon like stored power :latias:without needing to commit a tera. Against :gholdengo: flamethrower lets you trade into it so it can't tera boost sweep out of control.

Serene grace is important as well because it improves your consistency at winning games. Haxing your opponent is very powerful. :blissey: gets so many ice beam opportunities that it actually makes getting freezes a semi-reliable occurrence. You may even high roll a freeze while trying to trade your :blissey:, usually leading to a mon advantage and a win. Did you know that after 5 serene grace ice beams you are more likely to get a freeze than not? Natural cure is not missed much because we have 2 status immune mons in :gliscor: and :garganacl:.

Tera grass is to try and improve the sun matchup vs :walking-wake: as it is usually paired with :raging-bolt:

I usually try to preserve :blissey: for a specific threat I want to trick or trade into (usually something like a :raging bolt:) and avoid going to it as long as possible because no boots means I might get worn down too easily by hazards.

:sv/gliscor:
Gliscor @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 244 HP / 36 Def / 228 SpD
Careful Nature
IVs: 30 Spe
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- U-turn
- Protect

I chose :gliscor: for its good defensive synergy with :blissey:. :gliscor: makes a great status immune pivot with u-turn, allowing me to continually set up :darkrai: and :iron valiant: to win the game. Stealth rocks was put on :gliscor: because I didn’t want to make :blissey: dead weight with only 1 attack, and I didn’t want to lose :garganacl:’s sweeping potential. In addition having no ghost types on this team makes hazard stack less valuable. U-turn is very underrated as you can pivot on a wide range of pokemon like :ogerpon-wellspring: :Kyurem: :gliscor: among others. I chose earthquake over knock off because I wanted :gliscor: to be offensively threatening to bait in the mons I can u-turn on (and I’d be pivoting to an offensive knock off mon anyway.) I almost never lead :gliscor: unless I have a good reason to, usually opting to double it in or uturn pivot it in with :slither-wing: because it’s too much of a momentum loss to protect turn 1. Tera water is for emergency uses to pivot out of wellspring, become resistant to ice beam.

:sv/garganacl:
Garganacl @ Leftovers
Ability: Purifying Salt
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 HP / 52 Def / 204 SpD
Careful Nature
- Curse
- Salt Cure
- Recover
- Earthquake

This is the team’s primary wincon, I chose it primarily because it was the only half decent :ceruledge: check with recovery. Curse :garganacl: is still in my opinion its most broken set and you shouldn’t even bother trying to use stealth rocks on it, since you lose so much sweep potential. :garganacl: checks Pokemon like :ceruledge: and :zapdos: while also being a dangerous progress maker itself. Tera water is overall the best tera type for this team because :garganacl: is really good as a water type and I have no water resist. Its also really important to still resist fire to beat :ceruledge:, it also improves the :kingambit: and :gholdengo: matchups which might be shaky if I went with tera fairy. If I need a water resist, I almost always tera :garganacl: when I need a water resist. :gliscor:'s tera water is only for very specific situations and is less desireable. Try to look for an opportunity to tera :garganacl: and sweep your opponent as much as possible.

:sv/slither-wing:
Slither Wing @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Protosynthesis
Tera Type: Bug
EVs: 252 HP / 28 Atk / 220 Def / 8 Spe
Impish Nature
- First Impression
- U-turn
- Morning Sun
- Will-O-Wisp
A very underrated defensive Pokemon. :slither-wing: is the primary :ogerpon-wellspring: check because of its ability to barely stomach 2 ivy cudgels from it. You should generally always click morning sun afterwards since your opponent will be afraid of first impression. It is also one of the most complete :great-tusk: :iron-treads: counters available, being able to stop anything these 2 use is a big deal. Burning these 2 allows gliscor to sit on them and spam rocks since they will both be too weak to deal meaningful damage.:slither-wing: also checks many so many of the biggest threats in ou :ogerpon-wellspring: :darkrai: :dragonite: :Kingambit: :Zamazenta:. It also ohkos :deoxys-speed: leads preventing hazards from going up. First impression and u-turn are both important to have emergency priority and a way to gain momentum on your opponent. Will-o-wisp lets you punish physical mons and make progress. Tera Bug is for emergency priority situations

:sv/darkrai:
Darkrai @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Bad Dreams
Tera Type: Poison
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Knock Off
- Dark Pulse
- Sludge Bomb
- Ice Beam
One half of the offensive core. :Darkrai: is a great knock off user and generally just threatens a lot of teams. :Darkrai: is nice because it both beats down defensive teams and stops many offensive teams from throttling the team’s defensive core. Originally this had will o wisp but I needed a way to hit fairy types too badly, so I added sludge bomb with tera poison and it worked wonders. :darkrai: is a great tera target for this team since its very good at wearing opponents down, and it has great synergy with :iron-valiant:. I don't have much else to say its just a really consistent breaker.

:sv/iron-valiant:
Iron Valiant @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Quark Drive
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Close Combat
- Knock Off
- Moonblast
- Encore

This set rounds out the team nicely. I needed a strong fast physical attacker with encore and :Iron-valiant: was the fastest one. This heavily improves the matchup against :Kingambit: because close combat is the only move I can ohko it with pre tera. Close combat and knock off are perfect coverage making :Iron-valiant: a great progress maker. Moonblast is good because it provides a good noncontact move for valiant that hits specially weak pokemon like :great-tusk:. These 3 moves are very powerful as :iron valiant: tends to bait in physically weak pokemon that get surprised by a powerful close combat or knock off, and physical walls get beat by moonblast. I opted for max attack because close combat and knock off are the emphasis of the set not moonblast. Encore in the last slot to stop setup mons.

Usage tips
  1. Pretty much you only tera :garganacl: or :darkrai:. You sometimes tera :iron-valiant: if you really need to hit something like :zapdos: a little harder. The other teras are rarely used due to giving up too much offensive potential
  2. Don't lead :gliscor: in like 90% of games its better to double it in or u-turn it in. You only lead protect turn 1 if you see a pokemon on your opponent's team that you need status immunity against.
  3. Recognize early when you need to play aggressively. You cannot let pokemon like :ogerpon-wellspring:, sub :kyurem:, or specs :latios: get free turns or you will lose. If you can put on more offensive pressure than your opponent can with :darkrai: and :iron-valiant: you will usually beat these teams.

Unusual game plans for certain Pokemon:

:sv/gliscor:
Sd :gliscor: might look like a threat but you can go your :gliscor: and go to :darkrai: for an ohko or :iron-valiant: for encore. Its still threatening because your opponent will often tera it but you generally gain a huge advantage from this and can easily convert a win.

:sv/kyurem:
Sub protect :Kyurem:is Annoying but beatable you basically need to go :garganacl: or :blissey:, and condition it into subbing then you can go :iron-valiant: and try to encore it (might be useful to moonblast first so you don’t waste an encore on protect). Getting up rocks helps.

:sv/darkrai:
Try to prioritize going :slither-wing: over :blissey: against it because you can gain momentum with u-turn and :blissey: will get worn down too quickly by attacks/hazards if you don’t

Threats:

:sv/ceruledge:

Probably the biggest one because it throttles defense really hard. If its life orb and crits your garg its probably gg. If it gets an unexpected speed boost and you can’t outspeed it, also likely gg. If it clos combats your :garganacl: you probably also lose. Try your best not to give it a speed boost (unless you are trying to salt cure with :garganacl:) :darkrai: outspeeds prior to weak armor boost and so does :Iron-valiant:. I usually tera garg against this since many :ceruledge: teams fold to :garganacl: if you can get past it.

:sv/weezing-galar:
Only mentioned below :ceruledge: because of its rarity but this team has very little to actually threaten it. It prevents :gliscor: from healing and keeping up rocks and ignores my status immunity on :garganacl: I would try to tera darkrai on it and do as much damage as possible to it. Another plan could be spamming tera moonblast with :iron-valiant: though this is less desirable.:weezing-galar: is a very uncommon pokemon so its not a big deal but still very hard to beat when it does show up.

:sv/ogerpon-wellspring: :sv/samurott-hisui: :sv/walking wake: :sv/araquanid: Water types

As you may have noticed this team has no water resist making many water types very threatening (yes even :araquanid: demands you tera your :garganacl:)

For :ogerpon-wellspring:, :slither-wing: is good enough against it and if they tera :ogerpon-wellspring:, they can get overwhelmed by :darkrai: + :Iron-valiant:.

For :samurott-hisui: :slither-wing: is also good enough against it. Just make sure to not excessively protect with :gliscor: and give :samurott-hisui: a free sd if you suspect it to be that set because that’s how you lose fast.
For :araquanid: risk your :gliscor: turn 1 by stealth rocking (none have figured out surf is a move they can click turn 1). Then go :garganacl: tera, and start forcing the issue with curse.

:walking wake: On non sun teams this isn't too bad to fight but its a problem on sun teams.

:sv/torkoal: :sv/ninetales: Sun

It combines many of the team’s worst matchups, and is usually paired with :hatterene: making getting hazards up impossible. specs spatak booster :walking wake: is nearly uncounterable and you need to trick away your choice scarf and tera :blissey: asap. Tera grass :blissey: is meant to be an experimental answer to sun teams relying on :raging-bolt: + :walking-wake: but I never got to try it out. However if this is paired with a :venusaur: or a :ceruledge: you are probably cooked. I did manage to beat sun once or twice but it’s really difficult (and I think I got lucky tbh). Fortunately sun gets rarer the higher on ladder you go so I didn't fight it too often.

:sv/kingambit:

Easy to stop early game however its definitely capable of sweeping late game with tera. If you don’t save your :blissey:’s choice scarf you may have to outplay the sd with :iron-valiant: It comes up sometimes but if you play well you can still win, it usually can’t beat you if you have most of the team left standing.

:sv/Darkrai: Nasty Plot

Try and salt cure it with :garganacl: and then go :blissey: and trade, may require outplaying your opponent.

:sv/zamazenta:Rest Tera Fire

GG you are completely cooked. There is 0 way to beat this other than a miracle salt cure into the best set of outplays ever seen on showdown. Fortunately this set has become rare and I don’t see anyone using it anymore (played it once lost instantly)

Overall though this team has great matchups into the most common OU pokemon and its bad matchups are on the uncommon side.

Conclusions
  • As you can see team took a more aggressive approach to :blissey:, allowing it to not feel like deadweight on a balance. The combination of being able to beat most special attackers, cripple opposing walls, and haxing the opponent was much stronger than I originally anticipated.
  • :slither-wing: has also proven itself to be an exceptional defensive pokemon in ou, and I think more people need to experiment with it cause it even gets moves like whirlwind to phase setup pokemon
  • :garganacl: is still a very broken pokemon (surprised nobody complains about this)
  • Jesus loves you, I pray that my message reached someone today.
This is definitely one of my favorite teams that I have built I hope you all enjoy using this!

Thank you for reading! God bless you and have a great day! :Blissey:

This team looked so weird as I was reading the RMT, but after seeing the replays, it all started making sense as I started seeing the vision more and more. Congrats on the peak, Joe!
