Monotype Rising Sets
:sv/ogerpon wellspring:
:sv/iron moth:
:sv/wo-chien:

Welcome to the ninth edition of the Monotype Rising Sets that aims to unveil the future of Monotype. You have been using an unknown set for a long time or have just thought about a new way of using a Pokémon? Come sharing your findings with the community!

This event will be run in the form of a contest. You will have 2 weeks to submit ONE set of your choosing for whichever Pokémon, before a poll is launched in the Monotype room to determine the winning set.

Rules:
  • Only one post per person is allowed.
  • Both the Pokémon and the set you want to feature are up to you.
  • A set is valid if and only if it does not exist in the Monotype SV SmogDex.
  • Item/Move-swap sets are not allowed, unless they change fundamentally the way the Pokémon is used.
  • You may import your set from your PS! teambuilder or write it down.
  • Your set proposition must include the following elements: set, description, potential teammates, and either replays or damage calculations.
  • Replays and damage calculations must showcase the set's uniqueness, so choose them wisely.
  • Please convey the uniqueness of your set while avoiding emphatic language ("It's the greatest set ever!")
  • Do not react to other submitted sets in your post, focus on yours.
Hereunder you will find the accepted format for submissions as well as an example of accepted and rejected sets.

Name of the set + Pokémon name + (Type) (ex: "Choice Specs Dragapult (Dragon)")

(you may import the set directly from your PS! teambuilder)

Pokemon @ Item
Ability:
EVs:
x Nature
- move 1
- move 2
- move 3
- move 4

Set Description

Describe what your set is achieving, which niche does it fill? Why is it interesting in the current metagame?

Teammates

Describe who would be the ideal teammates to surround it with which set.

Replays OR Damage calculations (doing both is accepted)

1. xxx
2. xxx
3. xxx

They should be commented and help you to make your point.

Barraskewda @ Choice Band
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Liquidation
- Flip Turn
- Close Combat
- Poison Jab

Changing one coverage move by another does not change the way the set is used, it is still Choice Band Barraskewda inside.
Barraskewda @ Heavy-Duty Boots / Muscle Band
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Liquidation
- Flip Turn
- Close Combat
- Psychic Fangs

By swapping Choice Band with HdB or Muscle Band, the way the pokémon is used drastically changes. Now Barraskewda acts as an Offensive Pivot, which comes with its own perks. Changing the moveset is not mandatory, but it does not mean the moveset should be lazily copy/pasted from an existing set. Your moveset should always be backed up with arguments.

Rewards:
  • ^ rank on Monotype room for a month
  • The winning set will be featured in the Monotype room
  • Addition of the set in the SmogDex

If you feel the heart of a builder, come sharing your best craft with the community!

Deadline for set submission is December 28th @ 11:59pm GMT-5

Sun Killer Appletun (grass):
Sun Eater (Appletun) @ Utility Umbrella
Ability: Thick Fat
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Apple Acid
- Earthquake/High Horsepower
- Dragon Tail
- Recover

Set description:
Fire, especially Sun Fire, has always been a nigh-unwinnable matchup for Grass teams, with Sinistcha overstretched and blown up by Ogerpon-H regardless. Even on other types, fire coverage is rough. Well, no more. With it's secondary dragon typing, respectable bulk, and thick fat ability, Appletun proves itself to be excellent at taking on strong fire type moves, while also having other uses.
Utility Umbrella negates the damage boost from sun, allowing Appletun to take those like no one else on grass, while a fully physically defensive EV spread minimizes damage from Ogerpon-H's Mold Breaker-boosted Ivy Cudgel, the only fire move in the whole meta that is somewhat of an issue for Appletun, while still taking special moves well. Relaxed nature allows to not lower any of Appletun's useful stats, as with 30 speed it's not outspeeding anything regardless. Apple Acid uses Appletun's higher special attack and it's snowball effect can deter setup threats from switching in. Earthquake hits fire types back for super effective, as Appletun does not have access to Earth Power. It also hits steel and electric types, which can be handy. High Horsepower does the same, but isn't nerfed by Grassy Terrain if you have a Rillaboom on your team. Dragon tail can phase out mons that would try to outmuscle you through setup and do not care for apple acid, such as Ogerpon-H. It also lets you rack up spikes damage. Lastly, recover is primordial to sustain this set.

Teammates:
Every good grass team needs a choice scarf Meowscarada to act as spead control, revenge killing, pivoting, and to fight off flying and dragon types.
Ogerpon-H is also an essential partner, providing excellent wallbreaking and sweeping capabilities.
Sinistcha backs up Appletun against fire types, provides great utility in strength sap, is the type's best special attacker, and is all around a scary mon for many teams.
Brambleghast provides the spikes that make dragon tail far more useful, and also gives removal, another strength sap user, annd walls Tornadus. A defensive set is preferred to get more spikes up.

Calculations:
+1 252 SpA Volcarona Flamethrower vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Thick Fat Appletun: 135-160 (31.8 - 37.7%) -- 93.7% chance to 3HKO

Air Balloon Offensive Hazard Master Glimmora (Poison/Rock)

On Poison:
Glimmora @ Air Balloon
Ability: Toxic Debris
Tera Type: Rock
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Mortal Spin
- Stealth Rock
- Power Gem
- Earth Power

On Rock:
Glimmora @ Air Balloon
Ability: Toxic Debris
Tera Type: Rock
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Mortal Spin
- Spikes/Stealth Rock
- Energy Ball/Power Gem/Sludge Wave
- Earth Power

Set description:
Essentially the same set on 2 different types. Offensive Air Balloon Glimmora does an excellent job of role compression, compressing a Ground immunity (so you don't have to run passive or subpar mons like Weezing-Galar or Minior), Hazard Removal, and Hazard Setter all into one slot, making it a perfect fit for offensive teams. Toxic Debris is the icing on the take, as a free Toxic Spikes is so good for the offensive teams that want to run this. Mortal Spin removes hazards, and Earth power hits the Steel types that would block Mortal spin such as Archaludon. The poison moveset is mostly set in stone, but the Rock moveset has some flexibility depending if the team already has a SR setter, and how badly the rock team needs STAB power gem, as Energy Ball hits some nice targets such as Swampert, Gastrodon, and Ursaluna.

Easily Climbed to and maintained a 1700+ rating (from ~1550 on my main) using Hyper Offensive Poison, and broke 1600 with Rock. I also believe rock main Khahara uses this Glimmora set on his rock team.

Teammates:

Poison Teammates:

- Pechurant is a near mandatory teammate, who doesn't mind serving as a secondary ground immunity with a Balloon, is a bulky pivot to allow your offensive mons to get in the battle via Parting Shot, and spinblocks, allowing Glimmora's hazards to stay up.
- Overqwil is a nice mon to run on these teams, as it sets Spikes and offensive teams love to hazard stack. It also acts as the necessary Psychic immunity.
- Offensive teammates such as Iron Moth, Sneasler, and Okidogi who beat steel types are appreciated here since Steel types block Mortal Spin; they also appreciate the hazards that Glimmora sets to soften up their defensive answers.

Rock Teammates:

- Arcanine-Hisui appreciates Glimmora's hazard removal (which incidentally removes the need to Colossal); Arcanine also beats the Steel types that block Mortal Spin. If Banded, the Spikes also help secure Extremespeed KOs; if not banded, the spikes supplement Arcanine's middling damage output.
- Other than that, traditional Rock teammates like Ogerpon-Cornerstone appreciate the Hazard Removal + Spikes support since it helps them secure KOs they may not otherwise get.

Prankster Resttalk Priority Sweeper Thundurus (Electric)

ResidentSleeper (Thundurus) (M) @ Maranga Berry
Ability: Prankster
Tera Type: Electric
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Bulk Up
- Rest
- Acrobatics
- Sleep Talk

Set description:

This set is built around abusing Prankster at its core. Being able to Bulk Up and Rest at +1 priority can allow you to stack boosts before attackers have a chance to shut you down, and with priority Rest into priority Sleep Talks you can heal up and continue boosting while asleep and start doing boosted damage with Acrobatics at +1 priority. You can often OHKO things before they even have a chance to move if you pull Acrobatics off of your Sleep Talk. It can be very RNG reliant in some scenarios but the goal was to minimize the risk of fully relying on Sleep Talk RNG by focusing on Thundurus’ bulk to allow him the maximum amount of opportunities to lock in and land an acrobatics. Speed investment is not a priority on this set because the goal is to be spending a lot of your turns in the +1 priority bracket.

Full specially defensive bulk and Maranga Berry makes Thundy exceptionally hard to kill after a few boosts. With full HP and the boost from berry, Thundy is guaranteed to take under 50 from a specs Flutter Mane Power Gem, for example. Meaning that if you’re full hp and have all your sleep turns ahead of you, you actually will beat Flutter ~80% of the time, as you get 4 chances to pull Acrobatics. In fact, there are a lot of special breakers that have a hard time 2HKOing Thundy with the berry active if they aren’t setting up Nasty Plots or multiple Calm Minds.

Rest not only serves as a way to fully heal your tanky Thundurus, but also serves as a way to clear status like burn or toxic, which hinder damage output and threaten to eventually kill our precious napping boy respectively.

Teammates:

This Thundy set relies on its team relatively heavily to work. For starters, 79/70/80 bulk is not great. Even with full Spdef investment that first hit without a berry is usually going to hurt a bit. On the other end, our guy really struggles to take a physical hit without Bulk Ups under his belt. So to give him a chance to set up reliably we are using screens :Regieleki:. The way I originally found my way to this Thundurus was actually trying out the screens electric floating around by Wincon so credit to him for some of the team comp and even the spreads here. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it type of thing. The Regieleki set getting used here is screens, Rapid Spin and Volt Switch with Light Clay. Setting up screens lets you try to set up and/or poke holes in the enemy team with Thundurus and his teammates, Rapid Spin is an obvious include since hazard leads are a relatively common thing in the metagame and Volt Switch is your pivot move and emergency electric STAB. Another option for Regieleki can be Explosion, with the idea being that you set up your screens with your chosen sweeper and Regi as your last two mons and you self KO to prevent any phasing.

The next few teammates are probably around what you would expect out of a screens offense team if a tad bit different from the usual stuff. These few I have less to say on because really they are just setup attackers that can abuse screens more than anything.

:Raging Bolt:
Raging Bolt has serviceable bulk as a baseline and an absolutely massive 137 base special attack. Behind screens it is really hard to KO, especially if you get some Calm Minds off. Honestly, a lot of the time you can just trade hits instead of setting up, Bolt just does a lot of damage as a baseline.

:Rotom-Wash:
The Rotom-Wash set I’m using is meant to create serious issues for teams that might be otherwise very difficult for this team to break through. Physdef EVs with Sub, Nasty Plot, Thunderbolt and Stored Power can really poke holes in some fat teams like poison with specially defensive Unaware Clodsire. Some people like to run Hydro Pump over tbolt on a set like this because it gives ground a hard time. The logic behind why I don’t tech the ground matchup is that I don’t think you win it anyways, and really ensuring a good matchup vs something like fat water is a higher priority to me than teching a matchup I lose anyways. Rotom-Wash has the exceptional ability Levitate, making it another ground immunity for the team besides Thundy.

:Iron Hands:
The Iron Hands set I’m using is straight from the team Wincon was using, except I don’t run Supercell Slam because I like to win games rather than make history. Belly Drum/Drain Punch/Thunder Punch/Ice Punch with Sitrus Berry can outright fully sweep by himself. Like Raging Bolt, there are times where you just attack rather than try and set up with Hands, he hits relatively hard even at +0. A hidden aspect of Iron Hands is that, when you look at this team on preview you will think that Iron Hands is the only physical attacker, so once it is KOed, you may find that the enemy will just randomly sack their physical walls to get a free switch, which can clear the way for Thundurus.

:Galvantula:
So to start off with I want to give a bit of background before I get into the set. I was having a lot of trouble getting through Sableye + Ting-Lu dark. Sableye means that Iron Hands can never click BD because of encore and my setup Pokemon are either answered by WW/EQ Ting-Lu or Encore Sabeleye. Enter: specs Galvantula. He does enough damage with Bug Buzz that even specially defensive Ting-Lu isn’t taking them serviceably and dark just doesn’t really have a good switch-in to specs stab bug buzz. Energy Ball hits ground types and Thunder and Volt Switch are just solid electric attacks. Once Ting-Lu is weakened, Raging Bolt becomes a lot scarier for dark.

Calcs:

A lot of these calcs are going to focus on Thundy’s ability to survive hits, as if it can live, it has the capability of beating what is attacking it.

252 SpA Choice Specs Flutter Mane Power Gem vs. +1 252 HP / 252+ SpD Thundurus: 150-178 (41.4 - 49.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

+1 0 Atk Thundurus Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Flutter Mane: 322-381 (128.2 - 151.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 SpA Choice Specs Spectrier Shadow Ball vs. +1 252 HP / 252+ SpD Thundurus: 118-139 (32.5 - 38.3%) -- 97.7% chance to 3HKO

Unfortunately, due to protean, you really need screens for this one, so the calcs will represent that.
252 SpA Choice Specs Protean Greninja Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Thundurus through Light Screen: 156-184 (43 - 50.8%) -- 3.1% chance to 2HKO

252 SpA Choice Specs Protean Greninja Ice Beam vs. +1 252 HP / 252+ SpD Thundurus through Light Screen: 105-124 (29 - 34.2%) -- 3.4% chance to 3HKO

+1 0 Atk Thundurus Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Greninja: 277-327 (97.1 - 114.7%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO

252 SpA Volcarona Flamethrower vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Thundurus in Sun: 190-225 (52.4 - 62.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Volcarona Flamethrower vs. +1 252 HP / 252+ SpD Thundurus in Sun: 127-150 (35 - 41.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

0 Atk Thundurus Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Volcarona: 378-446 (121.5 - 143.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

4 Atk Expert Belt Iron Valiant Ice Punch vs. +1 252 HP / 4 Def Thundurus: 146-173 (40.3 - 47.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

4 Atk Expert Belt Iron Valiant Ice Punch vs. +2 252 HP / 4 Def Thundurus: 108-130 (29.8 - 35.9%) -- 31.9% chance to 3HKO

252 SpA Iron Valiant Moonblast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Thundurus: 123-145 (33.9 - 40%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Most of the physical attackers will require reflect up for you to set up on them, so expect that going forward. It’s why Regieleki is the first listed teammate, as it is the most important one being that it’s really what enables Thundy to set up.

252 Atk Protean Meowscarada Triple Axel (120 BP) (3 hits) vs. +1 252 HP / 4 Def Thundurus through Reflect: 157-189 (43.3 - 52.2%) -- 1.3% chance to 2HKO
252 Atk Protean Meowscarada Triple Axel (120 BP) (3 hits) vs. +2 252 HP / 4 Def Thundurus through Reflect: 119-143 (32.8 - 39.5%) -- 99.9% chance to 3HKO

Meowscarada is a risky one to set up on because of the lower base physical bulk and TA having 3 chances to crit, but it’s not impossible as you’re seeing here.

Fast Taunt Ting-Lu (Dark)
:sv/ting-lu:
Ting-Lu @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Vessel of Ruin
Tera Type: Dark
EVs: 252 HP / 44 SpD / 212 Spe
Careful Nature
- Earthquake
- Ruination
- Stealth Rock
- Taunt

not gonna write a ton about this set but for dark teams this thing is super cool. we all know that dark struggles to make progression against corviknight and skarmory, especially on fatter flying/steel teams or if they run setup+body press. Ting-Lu not only outpaces them, preventing a Defog but also denies them the ability to Roost off damage, allowing Greninja or Meowscarada to more easily clean late-game. Taunt + Ruination + EQ is great into the fatter Pokemon in the metagame as it provides immediate progress against them. boomp enjoy another ting-lu analysis!

Stall Wo-Chien (Dark)
:Wo-Chien:
Wo-Chien @ Leftovers
Ability: Tablets of Ruin
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Def
Calm Nature
- Leech Seed
- Foul Play
- Substitute / Protect
- Giga Drain / Knock Off / Snarl

Set Description
Wo-Chien is an annoying unsuspecting menace on Dark teams due to its access to many great stall moves, such as Protect, Leech Seed, and Knock Off. Leech Seed allows our boy to deal some chip to opponents, which pairs nicely with Giga Drain. Foul Play punishes physical attackers (especially setup ones) who think they can ignore our Tablets of Ruin ability with a Choice Band or the like, and Substitute and Protect allow Wo-Chien to take hits freely. Knock Off adds pressure to the opponent, and Snarl can be used to further weaken special attackers.

Teammates
Wo-Chien appreciates speed control from :Meowscarada: and :Greninja:, as well as wall-breakers like :Hoopa-Unbound: and :Roaring Moon:. :Lokix: can also be used to get some priority and destroy threats like chipped Volcarona, as well as stuff like Ceruledge, but can be replaced by :Ting-Lu: for hazard control. Standard teammates, sure, but they can help Wo-Chien a lot in the matchups.

Calcs
+2 0 SpA Volcarona Fiery Dance vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Wo-Chien: 260-308 (69.5 - 82.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery (Bulkarona)
252 SpA Choice Specs Kyurem Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Wo-Chien: 258-306 (68.9 - 81.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 252 SpA Life Orb Greninja Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Wo-Chien: 190-226 (50.8 - 60.4%) -- 89.1% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 SpA Choice Specs Flutter Mane Moonblast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Wo-Chien: 278-330 (74.3 - 88.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

[SET]
Zoroark-Hisui @ Choice Scarf
Name: Choice Scarf (Normal)
Ability: Illusion
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Flamethrower
- Focus Blast / Psychic
- U-turn

[SET COMMENTS]
Hisuian Zoroark can make for a solid scarfer on normal teams outspeeding opposing Choice Scarf threats that prove troublesome to normal such as Urshifu-R, Great Tusk, and Enamorus. Shadow Ball is the main stab and pressure Ghost-types such as Gholdengo and Skeledirge along with threatening foes like Slowbro and Great Tusk. Flamethrower pressures Steel and Ice-types such as Corviknight, Iron Treads, and Avalugg. Focus Blast ruins Dark-types attempting to take it on like Samurott-H and Choice Specs Greninja along with special walls like Heatran and Blissey. Alternativeally Psychic ruins Fighting-types such as Urshifu-R and non Scarf Iron Valiant. Finally U-turn with a Naive Nature OHKOs Meowscarada and Hoopa-U.

Scarf Hisuian Zoroark will generally fit on similar comps to regular Hisuian Zoroark. It greatly enjoys the support of Blissey's Stealth Rock to wear down checks like Alolan Muk and Roaring Moon. Porygon2 provides a physical wall capable of handling faster scarfers and priority users like Sneasler and Scizor. Ursaluna is an incredible physical breaker that slams through would be special walls such as Alolan Muk and Hisuian Goodra with ease.

I am phoing this in at 6:30 AM in the morning, this isn't gonna be my best work.
