Buzzwole @ Heavy-Duty Boots / Rocky Helmet
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Close Combat
- Ice Punch / Toxic
- Earthquake
- Roost
Buzzwole leverages its obscene physical bulk and great typing to serve as a blanket check to some of the most threatening attacks and Pokemon in the tier by resisting common Ground-, Fighting-, and Dark-type attacks. Kingambit, Great Tusk, Urshifu-Rapid, and Zamazenta all find themselves relatively blanking into Buzzwole's enormous physical bulk. Buzzwole's Close Combat hits back like a truck especially after an opposing Defense drop from a Headlong Rush or Close Combat, and secures important 2HKO's on Melmetal, Ferrothorn, and Ting-Lu. Ice Punch smacks the otherwise insurmountable Gliscor, while Toxic serves as a blanket answer to any other Fighting-type resists. Earthquake hits the omnipresent Toxapex, Galarian Slowking, and Gholdengo, while Roost provides needed recovery. Heavy-Duty Boots enables Buzzwole to come in repeatedly without worry of Stealth Rock or Spikes, while Rocky Helmet enables Buzzwole to punish the many aforementioned contact moves that it readily absorbs.
Buzzwole fits best on bulky offenses, where it can make use of its bulk and resistances to check common threats like Urshifu-R, Great Tusk, Mega Lopunny, and Kartana multiple times per game. Teammates that appreciate its ability to check Fighting-, Ground-, and Grass-type Pokemon generally make great partners, especially those with significant special bulk like Toxapex, Heatran, and Galarian Slowking that can absorb the powerful Moonblasts and Psychics from the special attackers that Buzzwole fears. Fire resists are important when building around Buzzwole, so consider Pokemon like Dragonite, Alomolola with an Assault Vest, or the aforementioned Toxapex to ensure that Buzzwole is more comfortable against the likes of Mega Charizard Y and Heatran. Galarian Slowking as mentioned previously synergizes very well with Buzzwole defensively, and offensively it allows Buzzwole to avoid getting blanked by the likes of Toxapex, Pecharunt, Zapdos, and Moltres when combined with Future Sight. Offensively, Buzzwole appreciates Future Sight from the aforementioned Slowking-G or Assault Vest Tapu Lele to break through the Poison types that generally sit on it. Buzzwole also greatly appreciates revenge killers for common Fairy- & Psychic-type Pokemon, so a Libero Cinderace with Gunk Shot and U-Turn or Sucker Punch makes a great pairing, as well as offering some speed control. Choice Scarf Gholdengo is another solid speed control choice, and gives more leniency versus status-reliant opponents such as Alomolola bearing Toxic.
